Gladys Hodnefield
RAY -- Gladys I. Hodnefield, 77, Ray, died Dec. 26, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Ray Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ray Schauer officiating. Burial will be in Wheelock Cemetery, Wheelock.

Visitation will be 1-5 p.m. today and 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday, both at Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston.

Gladys was born Aug. 20, 1920, in rural Ray, the daughter of Adolph and Amanda (Rude) Olson. She was raised and educated in rural Ray. On Oct. 15, 1940, Gladys married Oliver Hodnefield in Plentywood, Mont. They farmed and raised their family west of Wheelock for many years. They retired in 1973, and moved to Williston. Oliver died in 1977. Gladys moved to Ray in 1979 and lived there until May of this year, at which time she moved to the home of her daughter, Shirley, in Regan.

She was a member of Ray Lutheran Church, and its WELCA.

She enjoyed her family, sewing, needlework, gardening and baking.

She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Phyllis, Minot, Dennis and Naomi, Watford City, David and Teresa, Williston, and Norman and Marilyn, Ray; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Glen Bauer, Regan, and Elaine and Kay Schilla, Minot; one brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Delores Olson, Ray; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Julius and Vernon; and one sister, Hazel.

Corine Hochhalter
ELGIN -- Corine I. Hochhalter, 63, Elgin, died Dec. 25, 1997, in a Mesa, Ariz., hospital while visiting family in that area. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Tuesday at Hope Conservative Congregational Church, Elgin, with the Rev. David Hofman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Corine Bender Hochhalter was born July 20, 1934, in Elgin to Reuben E. and Lillian M. (Quast) Bender. She grew up there and was educated in the Elgin schools. On Oct. 19, 1953, she married Fred M. "Fritz" Hochhalter at Elgin. They lived there and in Billings, Mont., from 1966 to 1970, returning to Elgin where she and her husband owned and operated the Triple II Drive-In Restaurant until 1978. They then lived in Jamestown until retiring back to Elgin in 1994.

She loved to crochet, garden, read, cook and care for her family.

She is survived by her husband, Fritz; two sons, Clare, Bismarck, and Daryl Lee, Grand Forks; two daughters, Cynthia Lee and Cherri Brucks, both of Mandan; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two brothers, Clifford, Elgin, and Dennis, Yakima, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Diane Scheidt.

A memorial has been established to the church. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin)

Tony Millner
Tony F. Millner, 89, formerly of Mandan, beloved husband of Gertrude, a Gig Harbor, Wash., resident for the past 24 years, died Dec. 24, 1997, in Gig Harbor. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Haven of Rest Chapel, Gig Harbor. Burial will be in Haven of Rest Memorial Park, Gig Harbor.

Tony was born on Dec. 8, 1908, in Mandan. He was retired as owner-operator of M&S Meats in Mandan. He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, and a lifelong member of Knights of Columbus, Elks and Eagles.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude; one son, Ron, Gig Harbor; one sister, Ann Shaw, North Dakota; two brothers, George, North Dakota, and Ray, Tacoma, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters; two brothers; and his son, Anthony F. Millner Jr.

Donald Homer
Donald W. Homer, 82, Bismarck, died Dec. 26, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bernie Kunz officiating. Burial will be in State Center, Iowa.

The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to services at Bismarck Funeral Home.

Donald married Virginia Adams on Feb. 12, 1938, at State Center, Iowa. He was a World War II Army veteran and worked at the Amoco Refinery from 1954 to 1973.

He was a member of American Legion, Elks, Eagles and AMVETS.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; one daughter, Linda Leno, Bismarck; two grandsons and their wives, Lance and Karen Leno, and Loren and Terri Leno; and four great-granddaughters, Nicole, Samantha, Jessica and Danielle Leno.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kay; his parents; three sisters; and one son-in-law, Leo. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Elise Solomonson
PARSHALL -- Elise Solomonson, 78, Parshall, died Dec. 25, 1997, in a Parshall nursing home. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, Parshall. Burial will be in Parshall Cemetery.

She is survived by five sons, Gary, Auburn, Wash., John, Klackamas, Ore., Robert, Kansas City, Kan., Dean, Parshall, and Paul, Sidney, Mont.; five daughters, Gayle Ingraham, Fort Payne, Ala., Mary Pfau, Rugby, Beth Selle, Dickinson, Peggy Rothchild, Minot, and Anne Anderson, Auburn, Wash.; three sisters, Jeanne Ottnerness, Manteca, Calif., Doris Lindvig, Williston, and Virginia Halseth, Manteca; and two brothers, Robert Nelson, Klamath Falls, Ore., and Ralph Nelson, Waxahachie, Texas. Junald Rendahl
Junald Leo Rendahl, 94, Moorhead, Minn., died Dec. 24, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead. Burial will be in Prairie Home Cemetery, Moorhead.

He is survived by one son, John D., Tallahassee, Fla., one daughter, Janet Haussmann, Moorhead; and one sister, May Swanson, Nogales, Ariz. (Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead)

Arthur Mahowald
GARRISON -- Arthur Mahowald, 80, Garrison, died Dec. 25, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Garrison. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Edna; one son, Doug, Bismarck; and one daughter, Joan Glasser, Bismarck. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

LeRoy Rieger
LeRoy Rieger, 68, Eagan, Minn., formerly of Martin, died Dec. 26, 1997, in a St. Paul, Minn., hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; one brother, Curtis, Richfield, Minn.; and one sister, Doris Schimke, Harvey. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Walter Bauer
ASHLEY -- Walter Bauer, 84, Ashley, died Dec. 24, 1997, in the Ashley hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ashley Baptist Church. Further arrangements are pending with Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley.

Pauline Boeckel
BEULAH -- Pauline Boeckel, 78, Beulah, died Dec. 27, 1997, in a Beulah nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

Emil Fischer
TURTLE LAKE -- Emil Fischer, 84, Turtle Lake, died Nov. 30, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10-30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, with the Rev. Norman Paskowsky officiating. Burial will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon-8 p.m. Thursday at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Emil Fischer was born June 11, 1913, at rural Mercer to Fredrick and Katharina (Wagner) Fischer. He grew up on his parents' farm 11 miles southwest of Mercer, where he attended rural school. As a young man, he farmed and ranched with his father.

He married Emma Bauer Oct. 17, 1935, at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Mercer, which also was the church where he had been confirmed and baptized. They made their home on the Fischer family farm, where they took over the ranching and farming operations.

In 1950, they moved into Turtle Lake, where Emil was employed by Lindteigen Construction Co., but also continued to farm. In 1960, they moved back to their farm at rural Mercer, where he continued to farm until they retired and moved back into Turtle Lake.

He enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors, but his joy in life was his family and especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Emma; two sons and daughters-in-law, Fredrick and Rosie, rural Mercer, and Melvin and Karen, Bismarck; three daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Richard McClintock, Milton, Fla., Darlene and Kenny Lasher, rural McClusky, and Doris and Wade Wall, rural Mercer; 11 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; and one sister. (Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake)

Edmund Birkmaier
DICKINSON -- Edmund C. Birkmaier, 81, Dickinson, died Nov. 29, 1997, in Dickinson. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Thursday at St. John United Church of Christ, Hebron. Burial will be in Taylor Lutheran Cemetery, Taylor.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. MST Wednesday at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron, and for one hour prior to services at the church. A prayer service will be said at 7 p.m. MST Wednesday at the funeral home.

Edmund was born July 17, 1916, in Hebron, to Paul C. and Emilie (Jaeger) Birkmaier. He was raised and educated in Hebron. He farmed south of Hebron for most of his life. He and his late wife were longtime members of St. John United Church of Christ. In 1958, they moved into Hebron, where they were co-owners of the Gambles Store. In 1975, they moved to the Bismarck area. Ed continued to farm and did residential construction work, until retiring in 1991.

He and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and were involved with many friends in bird watching, Bismarck Antique Cars and the Elks Club. He was a member of Bismarck United Church of Christ.

He is survived by two sons, Robert, Merced, Calif., and Gary and Kathey, Farmington, N.M.; two stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Judy and Bill Zimmerman, Nashville, Ind., and Janis and John Funk, Richland, Wash.; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Lillian Kreis, Dickinson, Esther Birkmaier, San Francisco, and Louise and Dean Barker, Bainbridge Island, Wash.; and one brother, Paul, San Carlos, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his wife; and his parents.

Selma Hoesel
NEW SALEM -- Selma Hoesel, 76, New Salem, died Nov. 30, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Thursday at the Presbyterian Church in New Salem, with the Rev. Mary Lee Lint officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, New Salem.

Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. MST Wednesday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Selma was born Dec. 24, 1920, in New Salem, the daughter of Raymond and Anna (Bock) Henry. She was raised in New Salem and married William R. Hoesel on July 18, 1936, in Mandan. She spent her time being a housewife and doing several jobs around the community, such as painting and housecleaning.

She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanette and Larvel Anderson, New Salem, and Helen and Dennis Stayton, Sacramento, Calif.; four grandchildren, Nancy Anderson, Rosemount, Calif., Susan Beno, Glendale, Colo., Teresa Stefanisko, San Jose, Calif., and Denise Stayton, Redding, Calif.; four great-grandchildren, Jamie, Travis, Dustin and Andrew Kaelberer, Rosemount, Minn.; and three sisters, Margaret Bertek, Anaconda, Mont., Ann Hoesel, Mandan, and Evelyn Meschke, Dickinson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William R., who died Dec. 20, 1995; one brother, William Henry; and one sister, Gertie Henry. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Martha Arndt
Martha Arndt, 95, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck, died Nov. 30, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas R. Marcis Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday, and 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Wednesday, both at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, and for one hour prior to services at the church, also on Wednesday. A prayer service will be said at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Boelter Funeral Home.

Martha was born on May 1, 1902, in the Bismarck area. As a young girl, she moved with her family to the Garrison area. She married Jacob Arndt on July 21, 1912, at her parents' farm.

She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Elsie Hagge, Bismarck, Edna and Art Mahowald, Garrison, and Ethel and Elwood Sayler, Great Falls, Mont.; one son and daughter-in-law, Erhart and Dorothy, Grand Island, Neb.; one brother, Edward Abel, Auburn, Wash.; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob, in 1968; two sons, William and Edward; one granddaughter, Launa Arndt; two sisters, Lydia and Emma; and three brothers, Reinhold, Jake and John. (Boelter Funeral Home)

JAMESTOWN -- Martha Marie Geroux, 76, Jamestown, died Nov. 30, 1997, in a Jamestown nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Basilica of St. James, Jamestown. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown.

She is survived by five daughters, Sally Lind, Crystal Lake, Ill., Josephine Thornhill, Rose Hill, N.C., Illa Taylor, Vandalia, Ohio, and Nancy Boyce and Kathy Wiest, both of Jamestown; two sons, Randy, Medford, Ore., and Garry, Jamestown; seven brothers, Gotthielf Bitz, Jamestown, Edward Bitz, Valley City, George Bitz, Aberdeen, S.D., Edwin Bitz, Montana, Henry Bitz, Port Orchard, Wash., Leroy Bitz, Grand Forks, and William Bitz, Browning, Mont.; and two sisters, Freda Olson, Grand Forks, and Rosemary Rockwell, Springfield, Mo. Charles Kordonowy
JAMESTOWN -- Charles M. Kordonowy, 58, Jamestown, died Nov. 29, 1997, in the Jamestown hospital. Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at St. Johns Ukrainian Catholic Church, Belfield.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; three sons, Stuart, Asheville, N.C., Wade, Merriam, Kan., and Shawn, Wichita, Kan.; one daughter, Alicia Winterroth, Lakeville, Minn.; one sister, Rose Shaw, Greeley, Colo.; and three brothers, William, Dickinson, Joseph, MeeTeeTsee, Wyo.; and Bernard, Belfield. Ronald Harmon
Ronald Harmon, 53, Mandan, formerly of Watford City, died Nov. 27, 1997, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Epiphany Catholic Church, Watford City. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Klasina Rettke
BEULAH -- Klasina Rettke, 98, Beulah, died Nov. 29, 1997, in a Beulah nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Wednesday, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Beulah. Burial will be in Beulah City Cemetery.

Al Stepanek
WILLISTON -- Al Stepanek, 95, Williston, died Nov. 29, 1997, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.
