He is survived by his wife, Dolores; five sons, Michael, Bismarck, John, Rapid City, S.D., Thomas, Bismarck, David, Post Falls, Idaho, and Steve, Omaha, Neb.; five daughters, Jan Kramer, Hazen, Susan Johnston, Fergus Falls, Minn., Mary Jensen, Luverne, Colleen Trosen, Larimore, and Karen Brandt, Streeter; and one sister, Helen Engle, Mayer, Minn. Anton Ridl
DICKINSON -- Anton A. Ridl, 93, Dickinson, died March 28, 1998, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Tuesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; one daughter, Grace Wetzel, Dickinson; three sons, Clarence, Kingman, Ariz., Raymond, Dickinson, and Eugene, Dickinson. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Frances Heidt
DICKINSON -- Frances Heidt, 92, Dickinson, died March 28, 1998, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Tuesday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Dickinson.

She is survived by three sons, Peter, Dickinson, Paul, Wichita, Kan., and Jack, Dickinson; three daughters, Mary Kuntz, Derby, Kan., Frances Dukart, Billings, Mont., and Ida Oster, Dickinson; one brother, Louie Kubischta, Dickinson. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Fred Rummel
RICHARDTON -- Fred Rummel, 92, Richardton, died March 27, 1998, in the Richardton hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Richardton, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Lottie; four sons, Pete, Richardton, Donald, Richardton, Arnold, Dickinson, and Jerry, Richardton; two daughters, Patricia Freidt, Mott, and Ione Cady, Lame Deer, Mont.; and three sisters, Martha Herner, Mesa, Ariz., Frances Lane, Great Falls, Mont., and Irene Streu, Richardton. Carl Buechler
STRASBURG -- Carl Buechler, 68, Strasburg, died March 28, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending at Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

Lois Olson
JAMESTOWN -- Lois Olson, 87, Jamestown, died March 25, 1998, in a Jamestown nursing home. Services were held Saturday at Montpelier Lutheran Church, with burial in Monpelier Cemetery.

She is survived by three sons, Robert, Jamestown, Don, Montpelier, and Roger, McClusky; two sisters, Ruth Dally, Montpelier, and Doris Ziegenhagen, Jamestown; and one brother, Glenn Witzig, Jamestown. (Lisko Funeral Home, Jamestown)

Elmer Woodcox
Elmer R. "Bill" Woodcox, 81, 1521 Harmon Ave., died March 27, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Stephen Wisthoff and Stanley Malmgren officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a Masonic service will begin at 7 tonight.

Elmer was born in Rochester, Ind., Nov. 28, 1916. He was the son of Ray and Orpha Woodcox. His mother died during his birth. He was raised and educated on a farm, five miles west of Rochester in the Burton area, by his grandparents, Ulrich and Mary Woodcox. He attended Rochester High School, a member of the class of 1935.

He married Cathryn Knicklebine on Nov. 2, 1940. They were married 58 years. He was employed from 1936 to1960 by Armour Creameries. They were transferred to Bismarck in 1949, where he became plant manager. In 1960 he founded Arrowhead Cleaners. Bill and Cathryn operated Arrowhead Cleaners until he sold the business to his son, Jerry, in 1979. He was always proud of the fact that Jerry took his son, Clark, into the business making three generations in the business. When he started the cleaners he had his wife as bookkeeper and three employees. When he sold the business he had 33 employees who he was very proud of and gave them credit for his success.

After his retirement, Bill and Kate spent many great summers at their cottage at West Leaf Lake, Ottertail, Minn. He always said he was the No. 1 fishing guide on that lake.

Bill served on the Bismarck Hospital Board of Directors for 11 years. He was a life member of Elks, Bismarck Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge No. 5 and El Zagal Shrine. He was a member of First Baptist Church since 1949. He served on many church boards and was chairman of the board of trustees when the present church was built.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Lynn, Dallas, and Jerry and Donna, Bismarck; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cathryn, who died March 4, 1998; his parents; two brothers; and one sister.

The family prefers memorials to First Baptist Church, Bismarck.

Rev. Robert Williams
DICKINSON -- The Rev. Robert Williams, 66, Dickinson, died March 26, 1998, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New England, with the Most Rev. Paul Zipfel and the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Special music will be provided by Jan Kuhn, organist, with Victor Dvorak, songleader, and Doug Murphy, cantor. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, New England.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today at the church, where a vigil will begin at 7 tonight.

Robert was born May 14, 1931, in Marshfield, Mass., the son of Loyed and Ilene (Smith) Williams. He attended Brockton High School in Brockton, Mass. He began his education at Bentley College, Boston, and continued at St. Philip Neri School for Delayed Vocations, Boston, and St. Thomas Minor Seminary, Hartford, Conn.

He received his theological training at St. Christ the King Seminary, St. Bonaventure, N.Y. and St. Paul's Seminary, St. Paul, Minn. He also earned his masters degree in educational administration at Columbia University, New York City. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Bismarck on Feb. 2, 1960, in West Rocksbury, Mass., at Cathedral of the Holy Cross by the Most Rev. Thomas J. Riley. His first assignment in the Diocese of Bismarck was as assistant pastor at the Church of St. Mary, New England, from May to July 1960. He then became assistant pastor at Church of St. Leo in Minot, where he remained until 1969.

Father Williams then served as pastor at Church of St. Mary, Foxholm, from 1969 to 1972. He was named administrator of Bishop Ryan High School, Minot, from 1970 to 1976, when he became pastor of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Max. In 1987, he became pastor of the Church of St. Mary, New England, and remained there until August 1996. Father Williams retired Nov. 1, 1997.

He is survived by one brother, Francis, and his wife, Elvira, Brockton; two nieces, Janet Williams, Brockton, and Christine Williams, Dickinson; and one nephew, Michael Williams, Brockton.

Lena Koenig
STEELE -- Lena Koenig, 90, Steele, died March 27, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's the Apostle Church, Minot, with burial in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot. The Rev. Henry Schneider will officiate.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Monday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Magdalena "Lena" Volk was born Jan. 9, 1908, in Smokey Lake Township, McHenry County, the daughter of John and Dorothy (Lorenz) Volk. Lena was educated in rural schools and stayed on the family farm attending to the household until her marriage. She was married to Simon Koenig on Oct. 7, 1929, at Fulda. Lena and Simon farmed in Pierce County, south of Rugby for the majority of their lives. They moved to Minot in 1959, and to Bismarck in 1996.

Lena loved to stitch, embroider and crochet. She was an avid gardener, raising both flowers and vegetables. She was an excellent cook. Lena loved children and was especially close to her grandchildren. She will be remembered as a sweet, kind, gentle lady with a unique sense of humor.

She is survived by her husband, Simon; two sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Delores, Rugby, and Ralph and Madonna, Edina, Minn.; two daughters, Rose Bundy, Bismarck, and Irene Koenig, Bismarck; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Stanley; two brothers; and three sisters.

Margaret Helmer
Services for Margaret M. Helmer, 98, St. Paul, Minn., will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John's Catholic Church, St. Paul, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, St. Paul.

She is survived by one brother, George Paulus, Bismarck. (Mueller Mortuary, St. Paul)

John Vander Laan
POLLOCK, S.D. -- John A. Vander Laan, 90, Pollock, died Feb. 28, 1998, in the Linton hospital. Services will be held at 10-30 a.m. Tuesday at Hope Reformed Church, Westfield, with burial in Dale Cemetery, rural Pollock.

He is survived by two sons, Wayne, Mound City, and Virgil, Redfield; one daughter, Maebel Nieuwsma, Herreid; one brother, Clarence, Huron; and two sisters, Minnie Vander Vorst and Evelyn Huizenga, both of Westfield. (Myers Funeral Home, Linton)

Vera Park
Vera Park, 91, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, died March 1, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Peder Tveito
NEW ROCKFORD -- Peder Tveito, 83, New Rockford, died March 1, 1998, in his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grandfield Lutheran Church, rural Sheyenne. Further arrangements are pending at Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.

Pearl Flowers
Graveside services for Pearl Flowers, 86, Bismarck Baptist Home, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Center Cemetery, Center. Further arrangements are pending at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Bergit Hitland
NEW TOWN -- Bergit Hitland, 87, New Town, died Feb. 26, 1998, in a New Town nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel Lutheran Church, New Town, with burial in New Town Cemetery.

Survivors include one sister, Gudrun Hitland, New Town. (Johnson Funeral Home, New Town)

Arnold Liebelt
CHASELEY -- Arnold Liebelt, 81, Chaseley, died March 1, 1998, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Bethany Lutheran Church, Harvey. Further arrangements are pending at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Mary McCabe
Mary McCabe, 84, Steele, died Feb. 28, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Steele, with the Rev. Kerry Stastny officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Steele.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Steele.

Mary Victor was born Nov. 15, 1913, in Fort Clark, the daughter of Mike and Mary (Fisher) Victor. She was raised and educated in the Fort Clark area, and in 1928, she moved with her family to a farm in McKenzie. She moved to Steele in 1936 and went to work at the Woodlawn Hotel and Cafe. On Nov. 5, 1938, she married Floyd "Jim" McCabe in Steele.

Later in life, Mary was employed with the Steele Public School and also Crown Lanes Cafe.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, American Legion Auxiliary, and served on the Woodlawn Township Board.

Mary is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Bonita "Bonnie" and Thomas Parker, Roy, Utah; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Colleen, Bismarck, and Randy and Julie, Coffeyville, Kan.; five grandsons, Chris Parker, Roy, Garett McCabe and Scott McCabe, both of Bismarck, and Jamie McCabe and Jason McCabe, both of Coffeyville; three brothers and five sisters-in-law, Otto and Mina Victor, Bismarck, John and Esther Victor, Jamestown, Fred and Ann Victor, McKenzie, Irene Victor, Hazen, and Eleanor McCabe Oeder, Bismarck; one sister and brother-in-law, Elsie and Bob Coons, McKenzie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim; and two brothers, Charlie Victor and Joe Victor.

Christ Hoffman
Christ E. Hoffman, 69, 317 Shady Lane, died Feb. 28, 1998, in his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zazstoupil officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A vigil will begin at 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Christ was born Nov. 16, 1928, in St. Anthony, the son of Erasmus R. and Margaret (Eckroth) Hoffman. He was raised and educated in a country school in St. Anthony. He served in communications in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 and received the Bronze Star. Christ married Alice Mae Schuh, Oct. 9, 1957, in Bismarck. He worked at Montana-Dakota Utilities for 39 years, and retired in 1988.

Christ was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church and American Legion. He enjoyed wood crafts, fishing, camping and loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; one son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Clara, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and David Stenseth, Eagan, Minn.; one grandson, Eric Hoffman, Bismarck; one granddaughter, Amy Stenseth, Eagan; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Phillip and Irene, Bismarck, and Roy, Pollock, S.D.; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Frances Schwartz, Bismarck, Sally and Matt Hegel, Angels Camp, Calif., Gladys Hagel, Glaston, Ore., and Sarah and Andy Bullinger, Torrence, Calif.; one step-sister; five step-brothers; and many nieces, nephews and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and one sister.

Carl Opp
Carl Opp, 91, 218 N. Mandan St., died Feb. 24, 1998, in a hospice in Ontario, Calif. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Darrel Lindensmith officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Carl was born Sept. 6, 1906, in Hazelton, the son of John and Rosina (Klipfel) Opp. Carl was married to Milta Spitzer, Sept. 8, 1928. He began employment at the Bismarck Tribune in May 1930. He worked there for 41 years until his retirement in June 1971 as a mail room foreman. He took a lot of pride in the beautiful flowers that he planted every spring. Carl had a close relationship with the Lord. He was a kind and gentle person, with a caring heart, who was always there for his family.

He will be greatly missed by those who were so privileged to have shared in his life.

He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Harley and Patricia, Pittsburg, Calif., Don and Sally, Santa Rose, Calif., and Steve and Marcia, Bismarck; two daughters and sons-in-law, Serena and Don Ross, Vancouver, Wash., and Carol and Dennis Chapman, Alta Loma, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother; three sisters; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Milta; his parents; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Donna Opp; one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Ken Scow; two brothers; and three sisters.
