CARRINGTON -- Dorothy Wright, 96, formerly of the Bowdon and Chaseley areas, died Feb. 8, 1998, in a Carrington hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Chaseley United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Chaseley Cemetery.

She is survived by one son, William, Biwabik, Minn.; and two daughters, Ruth Sogn, Carrington, and Edith Fay, Park River. (Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden)

Virgil Klebe
Virgil E. Klebe, 67, Phoenix, Ariz., died Feb. 7, 1998, in Mesa, Ariz. Services are pending with Bismarck Funeral Home.

He is survived by his mother, Ada Anderson, Bismarck; one sister, Carole Klebe, Bismarck; three sons; and four grandchildren. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

KULM -- Margaret Herman, 88, Kulm, died Feb. 9, 1998, in an Ashley nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Kulm.

Carl Bartz
Carl William Bartz, 68, 1955 E. Capitol Ave., Bismarck, died Feb. 6, 1998, in Mesa, Ariz., of congestive heart failure. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Jeff Franko and Lisa Ahlness officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites provided by VFW Post No. 1326.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Carl was born March 7, 1929, in Coleharbor, the son of William and Cora Bartz. He was the youngest and only son of four children. The Lord used his life for many things.

His interests while attending school in Coleharbor included: football, pole vaulting and basketball. As a senior, he was center and captain of the basketball team.

After graduation, he tried his hand at farming and worked his way to a welder during the construction of Garrison Dam. He met his future wife, Ellen Ronningen. They were later married in Max on Aug. 14, 1955.

In 1951, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and began learning the skills that he used throughout his life. He graduated from the electric motor and generator repair school at Camp LeJeune, N.C.

He spent 15 months in Korea while working on the electrical end of camp power and signal generators for the First Marine Division. After returning to North Dakota, he was hired by Otter Tail Company on March 28, 1955 on a line crew.

In February of 1956, he and Ellen decided to accept the offer as service representative trainee in Parshall. In 1958, he became a service representative, serving the communities of Parshall, Plaza, Wabek and Makoti.

He enjoyed the opportunity and camaraderie of working with the employees throughout Otter Tail Power Company. He retired from the company after 36 years of distinguished service.

He was active in the community of Parshall. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Parshall Promoters, Volunteer Fire Department, Chamber of Commerce, Robert Blatherwick Golf Club, Arthur Solie American Legion Post No. 121, Community Choir and other organizations and committees. He enjoyed being a volunteer in Parshall and filling in as lay pastor for area churches.

After his retirement, he continued to reside in Parshall, spending some of the winter months in Mesa. In 1996, he and Ellen moved to Bismarck, joining Lord of Life Lutheran Church and Sons of Norway. His family is proud of him having been presented the 1990 Governor's Volunteer Award for Community Development by then Governor Sinner.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Robert and Barbara, who reside in Manila, Philippines, and Brian, who resides in Bismarck. He is also survived by two sisters, Viola Henne, McClusky, and Eloise Gussner, Seattle; and grandchildren, Nathan and Emily, Manila, Philippines.

He was preceded in death by his sister, DeLores Lee of Emmet. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Kent Wood Kent Wood, 77, Mandan, died Feb. 8, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Committal services will be 10 a.m. today at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military honors by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Posts.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Stephen Eastin officiating.

Kent was born on May 8, 1920, in Saratoga, Wyo., the son of Samuel and Zula (Hull) Wood. He was raised and educated in Rawlins, Wyo., and graduated from high school there. He began his career with J.C. Penney Co. in Rawlins prior to his military service with the U.S. Navy, serving on a PT boat in the Pacific.

He married Jean Shannon in Pierpont, S.D., on June 24, 1947. They lived in many parts of the country, including Casper, Wyo., Billings, Mont., Rapid City, S.D., and Spokane, Wash., before moving to Mandan in 1957 where Kent managed the J.C. Penney store until his 1977 retirement. He and Jean then began traveling in a motor home selling merchandise to the J.C. Penney Company for the next ten years.

Kent was very active in his community, serving as an elder at the Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Mandan VFW and Rotary, of which he served as president. He was also very active in the development of the Heartview Foundation. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; one daughter and son-in-law, Vicki Jean and Donald Berglind, Tucson, Ariz.; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary Kent and Denise Ann Wood, Edina, Minn.; four grandchildren, Eric Berglind, Kate Shannon Wood, Jonathan Tyler Kent Wood, and Lauren Grace Wood; one sister, Rita O'Connell, Cordes Lake, Ariz.; two brothers, Ralph Neil Wood, Magalia, Calif., and Robert L. Wood, Fort Collins, Colo.; one sister-in-law, Sarah Wood, Thermopolis, Wyo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bill and Sheldon; and one sister, Peggy. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Walter Kamrath
Walter C. Kamrath, 72, 1005 4th St. S.W., Mandan, died Feb. 9, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. James Sorenson and Joel Sherer officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites provided by Mandan VFW Post No. 707, and American Legion Post No. 40.

Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Thursday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Walter was born Oct. 8, 1925, in Mott to F.A. and Dorothea (Eschenbacher) Kamrath. He was raised and educated in Mott and graduated from high school in 1943. He married Irene Henne on Aug. 24, 1954, in Beulah and they lived in Mott for a short time.

On Jan. 7, 1955, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan, being discharged on Dec. 21, 1957. He returned to Mandan and was employed as a partsman for various car dealerships in Bismarck. He retired in 1991. He then drove school bus for Mandan School District.

His greatest interests were music and drama. A tenor, he did solo work for many weddings, funerals, and other social events. He also enjoyed working with the walking dramas at Fort Lincoln. He was a charter member of Northern Lights Barbershop Chorus, Faith Lutheran Church Choir, English Singers, and Germans from Russia Society.

He is survived by his wife, Irene; two daughters and one son-in-law, Meg Nathan, Spring Lake Park, Minn., and Kathryn and Daniel Shea, Bemidji, Minn.; three grandsons, Carl Nathan, and Nicholas and Alexander Shea; and two sisters, Louise Roemmich and Ella Dubs, both of Mott.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Herman; and two sisters, Esther and Anna. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Robert Bercher Jr.
Robert J. Bercher Jr., 43, 930 E. Turnpike Ave., Bismarck, died Feb. 9, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital, after a two year battle with lung cancer. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Revs. Steve Zastoupil and William Fahnlander officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck only, where a vigil service will be said at 7 p.m. tonight.

Robert was born March 11, 1954, in Wisconsin, the son of Robert J. and Joan (Rueter) Bercher. Bob attended schools in Wisconsin and West Fargo, and graduated from high school from Home on the Range for Boys. He married Charlotte Boutilier on Dec. 3, 1976, in Bismarck. Bob worked as a crane operator for various construction companies and for B.N.I. for the last 17 years.

He had a passion for riding Harley Davidsons. Riding his Harley helped Bob through the last two years of his illness. He was active in the Harley Owners Group, and was a devoted husband and father.

Bob is survived by his wife, Charlotte; one son, Robert J. Bercher III, Bismarck; his father, Robert J. Bercher Sr., Orlando, Fla.; his mother, Joan Bercher, Grand Junction, Colo.; three brothers, Brian, Phoenix, Ariz., Kevin, Bismarck, and Blair, Grand Junction; his grandmother, Margaret Rueter, Burlington, Wis.; his father and mother-in-law, Frank and Delores Boutilier, Riverdale; one niece, Heather Bercher; and three nephews, Ryan and Kelly Freed and Andrew Bercher.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Home on the Range for Boys or North Dakota Lung Association.

Carl Haux
Carl Haux, 94, 1019 Porter Ave., Bismarck, died Feb. 10, 1998, in a Mandan nursing home. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Century Baptist Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Willis Potratz and Elmer Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, both at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. A prayer service will be said at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck.

Carl Haux was born on Nov. 11, 1903, in Goodrich, the son of Ludwig and Katherine (Koenig) Haux. He was raised and educated in Sheridan County, near Goodrich. Carl married Dena Konschak on May 4, 1927, in Sheridan County. They lived and farmed in Sheridan County until 1957, when they moved to Bismarck. Carl worked in mobile home sales and service, until his retirement in 1966.

Carl enjoyed fishing, hunting and pitching horseshoes.

He is survived by his wife, Dena, Bismarck; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Betty Herman, Jamestown, Lorraine and Eugene Wonnenberg, Bismarck, and Carol and Don Whitehead, Amarillo, Texas; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Martha Deckert, Bismarck, Lydia Unruh, Jamestown, Ida Schmidt, Concord, Calif., and Clara Ross, Yakima, Wash.; one brother, Fred Haux, Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both parents; three brothers; three sisters; and one grandson. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Alvin Schultz
Alvin Schultz, 71, 906 5th Ave. N.W., Mandan, died Feb. 10, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Robert Feeney officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will begin from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Alvin Schultz was born Oct. 15, 1926, in Berry, Minn. He was the son of Ted and Ann (Becker) Schultz. Alvin was raised and educated in Odense. He married Katherine Metzner on June 7, 1948, in Fort Rice. Alvin was a self-employed truck driver until his retirement in 1986.

He was a member of Mandan Eagles. He was an avid outdoorsman, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine, Mandan; four sons and five daughters-in-law, Alvin and Bonnie, Bruce and Carla, and Kelly and Becky, all of Mandan, and Doug and Sasha, Bismarck; one daughter-in-law, Judy Schultz, Beulah; seven grandchildren, Christi, Mary, Bill, Brennan, Devon, Dessa Rae, and Daria; and one great-grandson, Tristen Sailer; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Marlene, Glasgow, Mont., and Jim and Sharon, Mandan; and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Vivian and Leonard Helfrich, Mandan, and Betty Dillon, Waco, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Rodney and Brian; and one brother. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Edgar Backsen
Edgar Backsen, 83, Mandan, died Feb. 10, 1998, at his home. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at American Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Norm Beighley officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery, with military rites provided by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Posts.

Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Thursday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Edgar was born Feb. 22, 1914, near Youngtown, the son of Henry and Martha (Kroeger) Backsen. He was raised in the area and graduated from Mandan High School. He served with the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946.

He married Eloise Rott on Aug. 11, 1940, in Bismarck. They were residents of Mandan for 57 years, where he was based as a telephone company lineman.

Edgar loved horses and, in his early years, broke them for riding. In his later years, he and Eloise enjoyed gardening together. He was a member of Mandan American Legion and Telephone Pioneers.

He is survived by his wife, Eloise; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Vince Nelson, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Cheryl, Fargo, and Mike and Marcy, Los Alamos, N.M.; 10 grandchildren; one sister, Myrtle Thorberg, Moorhead, Minn.; and one brother, Henry, Mandan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Helen Lees and Esther Backsen. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Bernice Wagner
Bernice M. Wagner, 76, Columbia, Mo., died Feb. 9, 1998, in a Columbia hospital.

She is survived by one daughter, Doris Mayuiers, Columbia, Mo.; two sisters, Erna Cumiford, Rapid City, S.D., and Esther Reimers, Bismarck; and four brothers, Leo Strecker, Bismarck, Marvin Strecker, Spokane, Wash., Melvin Strecker, Washburn, and Rueben Strecker, Clarksville, Mo.
