Johanna Freida Mannel Geck, 87, California, formerly of Bismarck, died March 5, 1998, in a Stollwood nursing home, California. Services were held March 8, 1998, in Woodland, California. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery, Spearfish, S.D.

She is survived by her husband, Clemens, Woodland; four daughters, Rosalie Kroger, Sunnyvale, Calif., Shirley Summer, Woodland, Dorothy Bridger, Las Vegas, and Elaine Flinn, Wilton; one son, Donald Ferderer, Sundance, Wyo.; two sisters, Millie Yusba, Arkansas, and Olive Sigmund, Underwood; and one brother, Ray Birst, Bismarck. Julius Bischof
Julius W. Bischof died March 7, 1998.

He was born on July 11, 1909, the son of Rev. Christian and Elizabeth Bischof.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Elizabeth Mohler, Bismarck, and Mary Carlson, Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister; one brother and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Donald; one sister and three brothers.

A private burial service will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Ben E. Maier
LINTON -- Ben E. Maier, 62, Linton, died March 6, 1998, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at United Methodist Church, Linton. Burial will be in Linton Cemetery.

He is survived by three daughters, Valerie Power, Wilton, Wanda Maier, Menoken, and LeAnn Kakela, Rolla; two brothers, Herman, Bismarck, and Harvey, Burlington, Wash.; and three sisters, Luella Cone, Richland, Wash., Beatta Heer, Pendleton, Ore., and Isabelle Woods, Gresham, Ore. Roland Nelson
MADDOCK -- Roland E. Nelson, 86, rural Maddock, died March 6, 1998, in the Rugby hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Klara Lutheran Church, rural Heimdal. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Ida; two daughters, Donna Mills, San Jose, Calif., and Darlene Nelson, Richfield, Minn.; one brother, Roy, Minnewaukan; and three sisters, Evelyn Cline, Minnewaukan, Addie Dyste, Churchs Ferry, and Edith Hanson, Devils Lake. (Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock)

Marie Schimke
HARVEY -- Marie Schimke, 91, Harvey, died March 7, 1998, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at First Congregational Church, Harvey. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey.

She is survived by one daughter, Maryann Bergland, Las Vegas; and three sons, Melvin, Karlsruhe, Willard and Delaine, both of Las Vegas, and Glenn, Balsam Lake, Wis. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Frieda Melby
Frieda Melby, 64, 1904 Eighth Ave. S.E., Mandan, and formerly of 708 Boundary Road N.W., Mandan, died March 8, 1998, in Mandan. Arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Edward Austad
Edward Austad, 75, 1609 Avenue C East, died March 7, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Bismarck Funeral Home, Bismarck.

Kermit Ellisen
Kermit Ellisen, 80, Mandan, died March 8, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Lydia Roth
WISHEK -- Lydia Roth, 87, Wishek, died March 8, 1998, in the Wishek nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek.

Frances Erpelding
Frances Erpelding, 85, 416[1/2] S. 12th St., Bismarck, died March 6, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in the spring at St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. Tuesday, and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, both at Dakota Memorial Chapel, Bismarck. A parish vigil and rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Frances Masseth was born June 21, 1912, in Logan County, south of Napoleon, the daughter of Michael and Genevieve (Fettig) Masseth. She was raised and educated in the Logan County area. In 1926, the family moved to Bismarck. She married Charles "Curly" Erpelding in Tacoma, Wash., in 1940. They lived in many parts of the country during Curly's military career. During World War II, Frances worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" in the shipyards in Tacoma. In 1945, they returned to Bismarck and operated Curly's Cafe. In 1951, they moved to Norwalk, Calif. Curly died in 1972. In 1991, Frances returned to Bismarck to live with her sister.

Frances enjoyed writing letters to family members, playing pinochle, and especially spending time with her family.

She is survived by her sister, Hedwiga Schneider, Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by both parents; four brothers, Adam, Joe, Mike, and Anton; and five sisters, Katie Ibach, Elizabeth Mitzel, Barbara Bitz, Jennie Graytak and Ann Colby. (Dakota Memorial Chapel, Bismarck)

Raymond Lapp
HEBRON -- Raymond Lapp, 60, formerly of Hebron, died March 4, 1998, in Baldwin, Mich., one day before his 61st birthday, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Survivors include two sisters, Betty Schilling, Glen Ullin, and Shirley Enzie, Dickinson; and two brothers, Bill and Arnie, Bismarck.

Phyllis Bailey
Phyllis Bailey, 81, Bismarck, died Nov. 16, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jay D. Stratton officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Phyllis was born June 9, 1916, to Henry and Dehlis (Lane) Gable in Bismarck. She attended Gibbs Elementary School near the family farm. After graduating from St. Mary's High School, she received her teaching certificate from Ellendale Normal School. Following one year of teaching, Phyllis married Fred Bailey in 1936 in Bismarck.

She spent the next 20 years as a homemaker and a mother. She returned to teaching at several rural schools in the Bismarck area. She continued her education at Dickinson State College and Minot State College, receiving her bachelor's degree from Ellendale Normal College.

Phyllis was instrumental in developing the School of Hope in Bismarck, where she taught for many years until her retirement.

She was a charter member of House of Prayer Lutheran Church and a member of Park Hill Homemakers.

Phyllis' loving devotion and commitment to family, friends, School of Hope, House of Prayer Lutheran Church and sunday school is lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her husband, Fred; two sons, Glenn, Helena, Mont., and Wes, Bismarck; two daughters, Janice Carley, Payson, Ariz., and Nancy Blevins, Glendale, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Johnson, Lynnwood, Wash., Lillian Christianson, Bismarck, and Peggy Schlingen, New Mexico; and one brother, Robert Gable, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by three brothers.

The family requests that memorials be sent to House of Prayer Lutheran Church.

Ronald Franke
Ronald E. Franke, 56, died Nov. 16, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cornerstone Community Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Mark Listen officiating. Burial will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery with military rites provided by Turtle Lake American Legion Post No. 133.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, and from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Wednesday.

Honorary pallbearers are all friends and past and present Meyer Broadcasting Co. staff members.

Ronald Edmund Franke was born Oct. 20, 1941, at Turtle Lake, to Edmund and Rose (Stolz) Franke. He lived in Turtle Lake until 1951, when he moved with his parents to Riverdale, where he graduated from high school in 1959. He served in the U.S. Navy for five years and was stationed aboard the USS Rockbridge during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After his discharge, he returned to Riverdale and worked for the McLean County Bookmobile and also took correspondence courses in radio and TV broadcasting. In July of 1968, he began working for KFYR-TV at Bismarck, where he produced voice commercials.

He had a special talent for imitating voice, and his voice commercials were well-known in the region. He worked with Dakota Stage in a number of productions and was a past member of the Bismarck-Mandan Civic Chorus. He loved to read and study history, especially in the entertainment and music areas. He was an exceptional trivia buff.

He is survived by six aunts and two uncles, Walter and Gertrude Franke, Turtle Lake, Arnold and Leona Franke, Freda Dockter and Esther Stolz, all of Bismarck; many cousins and friends; and three special friends, Clyde, Janet and Sara Bauman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother, Jackie. (Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn)

Earle Scharnowske
Earle H. Scharnowske, 89, Bismarck, died Nov. 17, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at McCabe United Methodist Church, Sixth Street and Boulevard Avenue, with the Rev. Peary Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday at Bismarck Funeral Home, Highway 83 North and Calgary Avenue., and for one hour prior to services at the church.

Earle was a 30-year employee of the U.S. Postal Service and was owner of Earle H. Scharnowske Painting and Decorating for 50 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a life member and past-president of the Eagles and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Earl was an organizer for the American Postal Workers Union, was a member of National Association of Retired Federal Employees, was a 50-year member of United Commercial Travelers, held a lifetime membership in the Elks and was a member of Burleigh County Senior Citizens Club. He was also a member of McCabe United Methodist Church. Early in his life, he played in dance bands. Earle loved to hunt, fish, and play bridge.

Earle is survived by his wife, Doris; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Leland Skabo, Dickinson, and Kay and Bruce Meland, Apache Junction, Ariz.; one son and his friend, Raymond and Carol, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Bonnie and Derek Oldenburger, Bismarck; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Merilyn Scharkowske, New Leipzig; and special friends, Lynn and Jeanette Kieper, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene; one son, James; three brothers; and two sisters.

The family prefers memorials to ND Veterans' Cemetery Foundation or the American Cancer Society.

Hobart Gates
Hobart J. Gates, 79, Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of Fort Yates, died Nov. 6, 1997. Services were recently held. Burial was in Timber Lake, S.D.

He was the great-grandson of two Yanktonai chiefs, enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940 and was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division and was later assigned to the 98th Coast Artillery (anti-aircraft unit) stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii in 1941. He was at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack and later fought in Europe in the Battle of the Bulge.

As an amateur boxer, he had planned to participate in the preliminary rounds for the island championships on Dec. 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He later recalled that one large bomb hit right outside the barracks and when he ran outside, he said the enemy planes were flying so low, strafing and dropping bombs, that it was possible to see the Japanese pilots looking down at people on the ground.

In 1943, he was transferred back to the mainland to train anti-aircraft crews and subsequently reassigned as a forward observer with the field artillery battalion attached to the 35th Infantry Division which was sent into the Battle of the Bulge on Christmas Day, 1944. He said that his unit was surrounded by Germans about five miles from Bastogne, and that only 17 of his 120 comrades survived.

After his Army service, he served as a federal officer on Indian reservations in the Dakotas and in New Mexico, and subsequently became a job counselor in Cleveland.

He was born on May 19, 1918, the great-grandson of Yankontai chief Two Bear on his father's side, and Yanktonai Chief War Eagle on his mother's side.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; two sons, Eddie, Cleveland, and J.D., Albuquerque, N.M.; two daughters, Fern Jones, Louisiana, and Dawn Little Sky, Eagle Butte, S.D.; numerous relatives on both the Standing Rock and Cheyenne River Reservations.

Anton Faith
STEELE -- Anton C. "Tony" Faith, 74, Steele, died Nov. 14, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Hensel E. Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites provided by V.F.W. Post No. 1326.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.- 9 p.m. today, and for one hour prior to services on Wednesday, both at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck.

Tony was born April 16, 1923, in Strasburg. He was raised in the Fort Yates area. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his retirement from contract construction, he lived in Steele.

He is survived by three sons, Harold, Lincoln, Neb., Donald, Parker, Colo., and Thomas, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; three daughters, Karen Albrecht, Carrington, Tammy Krous, Driscoll, and Connie Mittleider, Bismarck; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rose Holzer, Libby, Mont., and Anna Marie Vogel, Yakima, Wash.; three brothers, John and Ray, both of Yakima, and Larry, Selah, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Mike; one son, Mark; and one great-grandson. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Frances Kraft
Frances Rita Riehl Kraft, 73, Salt Lake City, Utah, died Nov. 10, 1997. Services were recently held in Salt Lake City. Burial was in Utah Veterans Memorial Park, Salt Lake City.

She was born June 9, 1924, in Raleigh, to Adolph and Appolonia (Schreiner) Riehl. She married Sylvester Kraft on Sept. 25, 1947, in Bismarck.

She was a member of St. Ambrose Parish and Altar Society. She loved to spend time at their cabin and with her grandchildren. She loved to sew, crochet and play Greed.

She is survived by her husband, Sylvester; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Sylvia and Lee Wanslass, Salt Lake City, Benita and Jeff Brinkerhoff, Casper, Wyo., Shirley Simpler, Salt Lake City, and Sharon and Jim Rawlins, St. George, Utah; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dale Kraft, Salt Lake City, Duane and Lynn Kraft, San Francisco, and Jerome and Debbie Kraft, Salt Lake City; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Phil and Marc Schneider, and Katherine and Simon Schall, all of Bismarck; 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and one nephew.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 1930 S. 1100 East, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84106.
