Hillis Adams
Hillis R. Adams, 84, Bismarck, died Feb. 20, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Century Baptist Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Willis Potratz and John Binder officiating. Burial will be in Underwood Cemetery at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Monday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Hillis Ross Adams was born April 18, 1913, in Adell, Iowa, the son of Willie and Lillie (Jewett) Adams. Soon after Hillis was born, the family moved to Underwood, where Hillis was educated.

He married Alice Larson on September 25, 1937 in Wilton. Following their marriage, they farmed in the Wilton area until 1951, when they moved to Bismarck and Hillis began his employment with the North Dakota Highway Department.

He retired in Bismarck in 1975. The last 18 years of his employment was in Underwood as an equipment operator and leadman.

During his retirement, he greatly enjoyed woodworking. Hillis was a charter member of Century Baptist Church. He served many years over his lifetime as a Sunday School teacher and camp counselor at Crystal Springs Baptist Camp.

Hillis is survived by his wife, Alice; two daughters and sons-in-law, Juliet and Gary Blatchford, Bismarck, and Lola and Robert Mattfeld, Spokane, Wash.; five grandchildren, Renae and husband Clay Ulrich, Bismarck, Jodi and husband Matt Lokemoen, Chippewa Falls, Wis., Ruth and husband Gregg Stuart, Bismarck, Paul and wife Kelci Mattfeld, Spokane, Wash., and Nathan and wife, Aide' Mattfeld, Tepic, Mexico; nine great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Madeline and Harold Larson, Breckenridge, Minn.; three sisters-in-law, Kathryn Adams, Tacoma, Wash., Mary Adams, Butte, Mont., and Barbara Bunk, Mandan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Fraase
ELGIN -- Elizabeth M. Fraase, 92, Elgin, died Feb. 19, 1998, in a Carson nursing home. Services will be 2 p.m. MST today at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin, with the Rev. Ken Trana officiating. Burial will be in Carson Community Cemetery.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to services at the church.

Elizabeth's grandchildren will serve as casketbearers.

Elizabeth Margaret Buschold was born March 5, 1905, to Fred and Alma Buschold in Tribes, Germany. When she was two years old, her family came to America.

They lived in Perham, Minn., and Elizabeth was brought up in the Lutheran faith and attended Lutheran school. On Oct. 3, 1924, she married Fred Fraase. To this union, seven children were born.

The family moved to Freda in 1930. Elizabeth later worked as the postmaster of Freda for many years. She retired in 1975. They moved to Carson and Fred died in June of 1987. Elizabeth continued to live in Carson, then entered the Jacobson Memorial Care Center.

Elizabeth enjoyed crocheting, raising chickens and milking cows, playing solitaire and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sons, Ronald and Betty, Rockville, and Rodger and Sharlene, Dickinson; her daughters, Elaine and Kasper Laches, Mott, Adeline Chadwick, Fargo, Alice and Frank Fischer, and Ina and Glenn Udell, all of Carson; one daughter-in-law, Mercy Fraase, Tacoma, Wash.; two sisters, Lena Mohr, Perham, and Francis Bowler, Belle Plain, Minn.; 21 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and nine great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred; one son, Fred Fraase Jr.; and one son-in-law, Chuck Chadwick. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin)

He was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials to Crystal Springs Baptist Camp. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Barbara Brakel
HURDSFIELD -- Barbara Brakel, 97, Halstad, Minn., and formerly of Hurdsfield, died Feb. 20, 1998, in a Halstad nursing home. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hurdsfield Community Center. Burial will be in Goodrich City Cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter-in-law, Carol Tinker, Issaquah, Wash.; and two step-sons, Ludolph Brakel, Halstad, and Kenneth, San Antonio. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Elma Baier
HAZEN -- Elma M. Baier, 81, Hazen, died Feb. 19, 1998, in a Glen Ullin nursing home. Services will be 10 a.m. MST Monday at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Debby Wiesenburger, Tuttle; one son, Jack Neumann, Seattle, Wash.; and one sister, Ida Mohl, Beulah. (Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)

Silas Anderson
WILLISTON -- Silas Anderson, 98, Williston, died Feb. 21, 1998, in a Williston hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Williston. Further arrangements are pending with Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Robert Stoddard
FLASHER -- Robert Stoddard, 78, Flasher, died Feb. 21, 1998, near Raleigh of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Arrangements are pending with Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Wilson Spotted Horse
FORT YATES -- Wilson Spotted Horse, 60, Fort Yates, and formerly of Whiteshield, died Feb. 21, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

Frank Kingsbury
CENTER -- Frank Kingsbury, 44, Center, died Feb. 18, 1998, at his home. Arrangements are pending with Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Pauline Fondrick
STEELE -- Pauline Fondrick, 96, Steele, died Feb. 20, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck and Steele.

Erhardt Straub, 83, 2430 Valley View Dr., Bismarck, died Feb. 20, 1998, at her home. Arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Cleo Jacobsen
Cleo Delores Jacobsen, 81, 527 W. Bowen Ave., died Feb. 21, 1998, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. Arrangements are pending with Perry Funeral Home.

Elsie Klaudt
Elsie May Klaudt, 85, 427 S. Washington St., Bismarck, died Feb. 23, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck, with the Revs. Jim Cissell and Dave Harriman officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, both at Eastgate Funeral Chapel.

Elsie was born in a sod house on July 7, 1912 in McIntosh County, north of Zeeland, the daughter of Wilhelm and Magdalena (Dickoff) Klaudt. When she was about three years old, the family moved to a farmstead seven miles west of Linton.

She attended country grade school and two years of high school in Linton. Times were hard during the "dirty thirties" and like many other people, she worked on W.P.A. When that employment ended, she moved into Bismarck and was employed by J.C. Penney Company, decorating windows and setting up displays for 15 years.

She then took a business course and worked for the State Tax Department. Later she worked for the Bismarck Hospital.

She was very active in church work, teaching Sunday School for over 30 years, and very active in the Women's Missions Society. She attended Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church, as well as Calvary United Methodist Church.

She was also active in World Gospel Missions Ministries. She was very articulate and painted some beautiful pictures. She also took care of the flowers in Crescent Manor.

She leaves three sisters and one brother-in-law, Edna Klaudt, Alma Klaudt, and Wilma A. and Duke Ellingson; as well as many nephews and nieces; great nephews and nieces; several great-great nephews and nieces; and very special friends, Dave and Karol Harriman and Ms. Iva Langseth.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; three half-brothers; and one niece. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Virginia Smestad
Virginia Mae Smestad, 76, 5400 Apple Creek Road, Bismarck, died Feb. 23, 1998 at her home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, at Bradshaw Funeral Chapel, 3131 Minnehaha Ave., Minneapolis. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today, at Bradshaw Funeral Service.

Virginia Higgins was born Oct. 20, 1921 in Minneapolis, where she was raised and educated. She married Clifford "Toby" Smestad on Nov. 1, 1947. Virginia worked for the Burt Company in Minneapolis for 38 years.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Ned Schauer, Bismarck; three grandchildren, Gina, Fred and David Schauer; one great-granddaughter, Alexa Schauer; four sisters; and two brothers.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Clifford. (Eastgate Funeral Service and Bradshaw Funeral Service)

Clair Porter
Clair C. Porter, 94, formerly of Bismarck, died Feb. 24, 1998, in a Williston nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Emma Sorch
WILTON -- Emma Sorch, 84, Rural Route 2, Wilton, died Feb. 24, 1998, in Bismarck. Arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Pauline Fondrick
STEELE -- Pauline Fondrick, 96, Steele, our beloved mother and grandmother, passed away Feb. 20, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, at Word of Faith Church, Steele, with the Rev. Bob Schoepp officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Steele.

Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. today, 9-11 a.m. Thursday, both at Eastgate Memorial Chapel, Steele, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Pauline was born July 9, 1901 in Odessa, Russia, the oldest child of Christian and Elizabeth (Hoffer) Neumiller. She came to the United States with her parents at the age of six months.

She married Adolph Fondrick on Nov. 30, 1920 near Dawson. They farmed near Streeter, moving first to Dawson and then to Steele in 1933. Pauline was a homemaker who enjoyed crocheting, and visiting with friends. Most of all she enjoyed her large and loving family.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Leona Moser, Jamestown, and Mrs. Alice Albrecht, Bismarck; four sons and their wives, Allen and Patsy, Beaumont, Texas, Lorraine and Claudia, Salem, Ore., Marvin and Mary, The Dalles, Ore., and Ed and Shannon Moser, Bismarck; 21 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 16 great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five sisters; one brother; one grandson; one great-grandson; and one great-great-grandson. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck and Steele)

Richard Sandwick
LINTON -- Richard Sandwick, A., 68, Linton, died Feb. 23, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, at First Baptist Church, Linton. Burial will be in Linton City Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; one son, Brian Whitney, Bismarck, two daughters, Sarah Lanoue, Boston, Mass., and Shari Sandwick, Jamestown; four brothers, Louis, Harry, and Chester, all of Linton, and Eugene, Bismarck; and three sisters, Macy Schiermeister, Hazelton, Alicia Woods, Dufur, Ore., and Maryl Traver, Roy, Utah. Clifford Christiansen
JAMESTOWN -- Clifford M. Christiansen, 70, Jamestown, died Feb. 23, 1998, in a Valley City nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Jamestown. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

He is survived by his wife, Mona; two daughters, Vikki Westfall, Bloomington, Minn., and Alix Christian, Amarillo, Texas; and two sons, Dale, Plymouth, Minn., and Lee, St. Louis Park, Minn. (Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown)

Frances McConnell
CHURCHS FERRY -- Frances C. McConnell, 74, Churchs Ferry, died Feb. 23, 1998, at her home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Zion Lutheran Church, Churchs Ferry. Burial will be in Churchs Ferry Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel; one son, Michael, Hazen; four daughters, Patricia Hermanson, Binford, Kay Haugeberg, Minot, Jean McConnell, Devils Lake, and Joan Jensen, Bismarck; and one sister, Ellen Cadawalder, Minot. (Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds)
