Erna Mertz
Erna R. Mertz, 70, Bismarck, died Feb. 24, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, at Seventh Day Adventist Church, Bismarck. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Thursday, at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Erna Ruth Brod was born April 7, 1927, in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, the daughter of Phillip and Christina (Bauman) Brod. Erna and her family moved to Thorsby, Alberta, where she attended rural school.

She married Robert Mertz on October 25, 1949 in Edmondton, Alberta. They farmed for two years, then moved to Bismarck. Erna worked at St. Alexius Medical Center and Sweetheart Bakery for 18 years. She retired in 1973.

Erna was named Volunteer of the Week for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. She was a volunteer for the Bismarck German Singers, the Bismarck Senior Center Newsletter, the Bismarck Chamber of Commerce and St. Alexius Medical Center.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Robert; one son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Pam Mertz, Murray, Utah; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and James Peterson, Bismarck; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters and brothers-in-law, O'Linda and Ted Germain, Edmondton, Alberta, and Edna and Ragner Mannerfeldt, Sylvan Lake, Alberta; and one brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Ivy Brod, Thorsby, Alberta.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Harold Olschlager
FESSENDEN -- Harold Olschlager, 72, Fessenden, died Feb. 23, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at First Lutheran Church, Fessenden. Further arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden.

Raymond Moore
DICKINSON -- Raymond E. Moore, 81, Dickinson, died Feb. 23, 1998, in Bismarck. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. MST Friday, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Axel Hansen
Axel Hansen, 86, Bainville, Mont., died Feb. 23, 1998, ina Culbertson, Mont., hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 MST Friday, at First English Lutheran Church, Bainville. Further arrangements are pending with Everson-Clayton Memorial Chapel, Culbertson.

Ralph Hickle
CENTER -- Ralph Hickle, 94, Center, died Feb. 24, 1998, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Center. Further arrangements are pending with Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Frank Dassinger
DICKINSON -- Frank Dassinger, 78, Dickinson, died Feb. 22, 1998, at his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Friday, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Arnold Krein
Arnold W. Krein, 69, 601 W. Interstate Ave., Bismarck, died Feb. 22, 1998 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at First United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Kerry Stastny and Kermit Culver officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from noon-8 p.m. today, at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Arnold was born March 29, 1928 at Hebron, to Edward and Elizabeth (Lennick) Krein. He attended schools in Beulah and Hebron. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Okinawa and Japan, beginning December 1950. He was discharged as a corporal in December of 1952.

He married Gladyce Lippert in August of 1954 and moved to Inglewood, Calif., where he graduated from Northrop Aeronautical Institute in January 1956. In February 1956, they returned to Bismarck.

Arnold worked for Peavey Co., as a sales representative for 25 years. He also worked for Heartland and Sky Sales. In 1993, he began as sales representative for Pioneer Hi Bred Seeds. Arnold was the recipient of many top sales awards in recognition of Outstanding Sales Achievements.

Many of his Peavey and Pioneer customers were not only customers but became his good friends. He retired on Jan. 1, 1997, due to ill health.

Arnold was a member of First United Methodist Church, Elks, and American Legion.

Arnold enjoyed hunting, golf, fishing, and being with his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed fishing with his grandson, Kyle, and spending every Thursday evening with his grandson, Dusty. He was a father and friend to his daughters.

His neat sense of humor during those final days will provide his family with many good memories.

He will be deeply missed by his wife of 43 years, Gladyce; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Monte Hoge, Bismarck, and Karla and David Day, Moffit; two grandsons, Kyle Hoge and Dusty Day; two brothers, Howard Krein, Bismarck, and Vernon Krein, Hebron; two sisters, Irene Roemmich and Marian Emter, both of Bismarck; a special nephew, Levi Krein; and a dear friend, Les Klein.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Reuben.

Clifford Schatz
NEW LEIPZIG -- Clifford Schatz, 71, New Leipzig, died Feb. 23, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Thursday, at Christus Congregational United Church of Christ, New Leipzig, with the Rev. John Amundson officiating. Burial will be in New Leipzig Congregational Cemetery.

Clifford was born Feb. 2, 1927 in Elgin, to Henry and Emelia (Karch) Schatz, Sr. He grew up on the family farm north of Elgin, near the Heart River. He received his education at a rural school, except for one year of high school in Elgin.

Clifford married Winnefred Baesler on June 18, 1950 at Christus Congregational United Church of Christ, New Leipzig. They lived and farmed and ranched north of New Leipzig until moving into New Leipzig in January of 1986.

Clifford is survived by his wife, Winnefred; one son and daughter-in-law, Clifford and Cindy Schatz, Jr.; five grandchildren, Stephanie and Brent Roth, and Jennifer, Brian and Brandon Schatz; five brothers, Ervin Schatz, Carson, Emil Schatz, Glen Ullin, Kenneth and Henry Schatz, both of Elgin, and the Rev. James Schatz, Wessington Springs, S.D.; one sister, Eunice Schulz, New Leipzig; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one daughter, Deborah. (Hertz Brothers Funeral Home, New Leipzig)

Chester Hemmah
SCRANTON -- Chester Hemmah, 76, Scranton, died Feb. 20, 1998, in a Rochester, Minn., hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Bowman Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Bowman Cemetery.

He is survived by one sister, Laura Stoin, Harmony, Minn. (Krebsbach Funeral Home, Bowman)

Bryant Ringham
Bryant L. Ringham, 18, 937 East Turnpike Ave., Bismarck, died Feb. 22, 1998, in a Minneapolis hospital of leukemia. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Revs. Thomas E. Kramer and Keith Odney officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday, at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, where a prayer service will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday evening. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Bryant was born Jan. 23, 1980, at Bismarck, the son of Bryan and Barb (Sweeney) Ringham. Bryant attended Northridge Elementary School, Hughes Junior High School, and was currently a senior at Century High School.

He enjoyed basketball and being with his friends.

Bryant is survived by his parents, Bryan and Barb; one sister, Laura, Bismarck; his grandmothers, Bev Ringham and Gloria Sweeney, both of Bismarck; four uncles, Jim, John, Mike and Pat Sweeney; four aunts, Ellen Handegard, Kathy Fowler, Judi Taylor and Mary Crompton and their families; five great-aunts; several cousins, including Susan Kautzman and Steven Bondeson; many friends, including a very special friend, Casey Sauder; and his dog, Magic.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Bernard Ringham and James Sweeney.

Charles Askew
FARGO -- Charles B. Askew, 91, Fargo, died Feb. 23, 1998, in a Fargo nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Gethsemane Episcopal Cathedral, Fargo. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.

Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services at the Cathedral.

Charles B. Askew was born Jan. 15, 1907 in Wadena, Minn., the son of Sam and Anne (McDermott) Askew. He moved with his family to Argusville, in May of 1910, where he grew up and attended school, later moving to Casselton with his family, where he finished his education, graduating from Casselton High School in 1925.

He attended University of North Dakota in Grand Forks for one year. He married Mary Heinen on April 19, 1928 in Moorhead, Minn. The couple made their home in Fargo, where Charles began his employment with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company on Oct. 22, 1927.

During his 43 years of employment with Northwestern Bell, Charles worked in various cities, Fargo, Wahpeton, Hettinger and Bismarck. He retired in Bismarck, and at the time of his retirement, he was assistant to the Vice President of Northwestern Bell.

Charles was an active lobbyist for Northwestern Bell for 18 years. During the mid 1960's he won the Top Hat Award for getting legislation passed for equal pay for women in North Dakota. After his retirement, Charles and his wife, Mary, lived at Little Pine Lake, in Perham, Minn., during the summer and in Fargo during the winter.

His wife, Mary, preceded him in death on June 25, 1984. Charles continued to summer at Little Pine and winter in Fargo for many years.

He was a member of Gethsemane Episcopal Cathedral, Fargo, and also a member of Fargo Elks Lodge No. 260, Fargo Eagles Aerie No. 153 and Telephone Pioneers, and he was active in Junior Achievement Program, Bismarck.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Mary M. and Ray Ellingsrud, Apple Valley, Minn.; one son and daughter-in-law, John C. and Mavis Askew, Florence, Wis.; one sister, Dorothy Lind, Seattle, Wash.; two brothers, Joe Askew, Moorhead, and Harry Askew, Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; three sisters, Bess, Marney, and Stella; three brothers, Casey, Harold, and Keith; and one granddaughter, Shawn. (Ivers-Landblom Funeral Home, Fargo)

Elizabeth Knoll
STRASBURG -- Elizabeth A. Knoll, 88, Strasburg, died Feb. 23, 1998, in a Strasburg nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Zeeland. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Anton; four brothers, Anton Feist, Bismarck, Mike Feist, Linton, Frank Feist, Bloomington, Minn., and Aloysis Feist, North Fort Meyers, Fla.; and one sister, Barbara Eberle, Bismarck. (Myers Funeral Home, Linton)

Vernon Thompson
BELFIELD -- Vernon L. Thompson, 90, Belfield, died Feb. 24, 1998, in a Dickinson hospital. There will be no funeral services as Mr. Thompson has donated his body to Univeristy of North Dakota Medical School.

Vernon L. Thompson was born Sept. 19, 1907, in Cameron, Wis., to Albert T. and Julia (Ekern) Thompson. He grew up on a ranch near Fairfield and also attended school there. He graduated from Belfield High School in 1925.

Vernon attended Dickinson Normal School for two years, before enrolling in North Dakota Agricultural College, graduating with a B.S. Degree in Agriculture.

Vernon was a member of Company K of the North Dakota National Guard from the late 1920's to early 1930's. He also was a member of North Dakota National Guard Rifle Team from 1928 to 1930, and the North Dakota Civilian Rifle Team for several years.

Vernon attended the Camp Perry Rifle matches for many years and received his distinguished rifle badge in 1938. On June 23, 1934, he married Evelyn Nelson, in Devils Lake.

Vernon worked as Assistant County Agent in Sargent and McLean Counties, and County Agent in Billings County. In 1942, they purchased a ranch in the Badlands northwest of Belfield. They raised cattle and Vernon resided there until 1997.

Vernon was a boy scout master in Belfield in the 1950's and taught marksmanship and swimming. He loved to be on the ranch and enjoyed the natural resources, actively hunting, reading and following all sporting events.

He is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Verna and Steven Gowin, Hazen, and Norma Thompson, Dickinson; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Ray and Kathy, Bismarck, and Albert, Evanston, Ill.; and one brother, Allen, Belfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one infant son; and two brothers, Ellis and Leslie.

Memorials are preferred to St. Joseph's Life Care Foundation. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

Raymond Williams
Raymond R. Williams, 73, Bismarck, and formerly of Lemmon, S.D. and Hayes, S.D., died Feb. 18, 1998, in a Rancho Mirage, Calif. hospital. Services will be held Thursday, at Calvary Lutheran Church, Lemmon.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; one daughter, Sara D'Incecco, Denver, Colo; one son, Russell, Hettinger; three sisters, Dorothy Kane, Denver, Grace Miller, Bismarck, and Vera Bartunek, Lincoln, Neb.; and one brother, Lyle Williams, Port Angeles, Wash.

Arnold Buzick
Arnold "Arnie" Buzick, 64, 701 Johns Drive, Mandan, died June 13, 1997 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Hugo L. Blotsky, OSB, officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery, with a Full Committal Military Service by the VFW.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughters Rosary will be said at 4 p.m. and a parish vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue until 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Arnold was born Dec. 22, 1932, in Argusville, N.D., the son of Floyd and Elsie (Lofgren) Buzick. He attended schools in Gardner, Hunter and Fargo. He worked for his Uncle Bud and Aunt Hilda Buzick in Hunter prior to being inducted in the United States Army on Nov. 5, 1957, serving time in Korea and Japan. He was discharged from the Army Nov. 4, 1959. He was an adopted son of Ben and Liz Frost in Hunter.

Arnie worked at the Gambles Store in Hunter, Fargo and Valley City prior to moving to Bismarck in 1974 where he was an appliance manager at Woolco in Kirkwood Mall. He retired medically from Woolco in January of 1982. On August 23, 1986, he married Carole "Susie" Schmitt at Spirit of Life Catholic Church in Mandan. Arnie and Susie hosted their foreign exchange son, Harri, from Finland during the school year of 1994-95.

Arnie enjoyed spending time at their cabin at Brush Lake with his special dog "Duke" at his side. He was an active member of Mandan Athletic and Recreation Club and was an avid hunter and Mandan Braves fan.

He was an active member of the Eagles, Elks and Moose clubs, where he held several offices in Fargo and Valley City. While a member of the Moose Club he held various offices. He also belonged to Brush Lake Cabin Owners Association.

He is survived by his wife, Susie, Mandan; foreign exchange son, Harri Viljakainen, Juva, Finland; sister-in-law, Delores (Dolly) Schmitt, Mandan; his great dog, Duke, and his cat, Henee; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Gary and Dee, and Bob, all of Fargo, and Mike, Moorhead, Minn., and Lorri Buzick, Andover, Minn.; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Delores and Wilford Hoaby, Shirley and Ron Stenberg, and Audrey and Bob Good, all of Fargo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Lyle and Darryl.
