DICKINSON -- Dawn Erickson, 36, Dickinson, died June 12, 1997, at her home. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. MDT Thursday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson.

She is survived by her husband, Mark; two sons, Joshua and Jess, both at home; one daughter, Katie, at home; her mother, Neda Peterson, Superior, Wis.; her father, Gerald Amys, Poplar, Wis.; three sisters, LeeAnn Gleaser and Cheryl Anderson, both of Poplar, and Amy Erickson, Superior; two brothers, Gerald Amys, Superior, and Arron Amys, Madison, Wis.; and her grandmother, Cecelia Ronchi, Poplar. Irene Simmers
JAMESTOWN -- Irene LaVerne Simmers, 75, Jamestown, died June 15, 1997, in Fargo. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Jamestown, with burial in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.

She is survived by her husband, Francis; one sister, Donna Mae Graves; two sons, Robert, Bismarck, and Roger, Sherman, Texas; and two daughters, Janet Rienstra, Lamoure, and Laurel Boyer, Mannheim, Germany. (Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown)

Osceola Gerbracht
HETTINGER -- Osceola Gerbracht, 79, Hettinger, died June 14, 1997, in the Hettinger nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Wednesday at Richland Lutheran Church, rural Hettinger, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by one sister, Dorthea McCullough, Wisconsin. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger)

Ernest Wilkinson
WHITE SHIELD -- Ernest Wilkinson, 76, White Shield, died Nov. 28, 1997, in the New Town clinic. Arrangements are pending at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

Leo Nelson
Leo E. Nelson, formerly of North Dakota, died Nov. 24, 1997, in a Phoenix hospital. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

He is survived by one sister, Laura Brousseau, Bismarck.

Mary Riveland
Mary Pat Riveland, 43, 1021 N. 26th St., formerly of Noonan, died Nov. 26, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot, with burial in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

She is survived by three sons, Ryan, Shaun and Justin, all of Bismarck; her parents, Frank and Grayce Lukach, Minot; two sisters, Miriam Lee, Crosby, and Betty Hausauer, Minot; and three brothers, William and Robert Lukach, both of Arlington, Texas, and Leonard Lukach, Colorado Springs, Colo. Erna Bowles
HAZEN -- Erna Bowles, 79, Hazen, died Nov. 26, 1997, in the New Salem nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hazen, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by one son, Brian; one sister, Frieda; and two brothers, Edwin and Wilmer. (Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)

Gilbert Gietzen
GLEN ULLIN -- Gilbert Gietzen, 85, Glen Ullin, died Nov. 28, 1997, in the Glen Ullin nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin.

Roy Kauffmann
LEITH -- Roy Ernest Kauffmann, 82, formerly of Leith, died Nov. 26, 1997, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. MST at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carson. Born April 4, 1915, to Ernest and Lena (Kluender) Kauffmann, near Minnesota Lake, Minn., Roy grew up and attended school there. After moving to North Dakota, he married Martha Zeller, July 7, 1936, in Elgin. The Kauffmann's moved back to Minnesota Lake for a couple of years before returning to farm south of Leith. His wife, Martha, died in 1985. On Dec. 10, 1988, he married Mary Brekke, of Lemmon, S.D., and lived on the farm until moving to Lemmon in 1992.

Enjoying hunting, fishing and gardening, he made many trips to Bismarck with his car loaded with garden produce to give away. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his love for his family.

Roy will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, Lemmon; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Curtis, Leith, and Roman and Peggy, Bismarck; one daughter, Roberta Henrichs, Scottsdale, Ariz.. Roy's grandchildren include seven granddaughters, Karry, Karla, Krista, Misti, Kristin, Katie and Kelsey; two grandsons, Raven and Greg; and nine great-grandchildren. His brothers, Adrian, Vern and Donald Kauffmann; two sisters, Dorothy Neitzel and Evelyn Tolzmann; and numerous nieces and nephews live in Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha; one brother, Harold; and one sister, Loraine.

Pallbearers will be Ray Miller, Karry Callanan, Karla Telle, Greg Helgeson, David Kauffmann, Dale Kauffmann, Mark Kauffmann and Gene Kauffmann. (Hertz Brothers Funeral Home, New Leipzig)

James Palen
James G. Palen, 84, Mandan Care Center, died Nov. 26, 1997, in the nursing home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. David Swonger officiating. Burial will be in Sioux City Memorial Park, Sioux City, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

James was born July 5, 1913, in Fond du Lac, Wis., to Guy and Caroline C. (O'Dette) Palen. He grew up and attended school at Eckman. James married Ferne H. Hansen, at Surrey on Sept. 27, 1934. They farmed in the Eckman and Maxbass area until 1956 when they moved to Bellingham, Wash. for a short time. They then moved to Minot where he worked for Kresge until 1964 when they moved to Sioux City, Iowa. He worked for Kresge, then Kmart until his retirement. Ferne died in 1985 and he moved to Bismarck to be closer to his family. James enjoyed boxing on television as well as local events.

James is survived by two daughters and two sons-in-law, Judy and Fred Bratcher, Rich Hill, Mo., and Debra and William Davis, Sioux City, Iowa; one son and two daughters-in-law, Larry and Karen, Mandan, and Bertha Palen, Bismarck; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one sister, Irene; and one son, Gary.

Douglas Swanson
Douglas Swanson, 49, Bismarck, died Nov. 26, 1997, in his home. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. David Swonger officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Bethany Lutheran Cemetery, Robinson.

He was born Oct. 22, 1948, at Jamestown, the son of Curtis and Delores (Leland) Swanson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Bethany Lutheran Church, Robinson. He was raised in Robinson and attended Robinson High School. Douglas served in the U.S. Navy with the Sea Bees from March 1969 to January 1975. He served a full tour of duty in the Vietnam War. He was a master electrician and owned "Swamy's Electric." He was vice president and co-founder of the Worker Against Inhumane Treatment organization. He was also a continuing member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Douglas loved hunting, fishing and his three Labrador dogs, Blackjack, Jake and Dominick. They were great company during his battle with back problems.

He leaves behind his wife of 28 years, Julie; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Kyle and Tonia, and Daniel Swanson; his mother, Delores Leland; four sisters, Carla Roberts, Marilyn Martin, Ellen Russell and Maria Leland; and one brother, Wallice Swanson. (Boelter Funeral Home)

Arnold Silness
Arnold N. Silness, 89, 901 E. Bowen Ave., died Nov. 26, 1997, in his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.

He was born July 20, 1908, at Bisbee, the son of Regina and the Rev. E.T. Silness. He attended school in Bisbee and graduated from Bisbee High School in 1925. He received a bachelor of arts degree in Latin, with a history minor, from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. in 1932. He was employed as a Latin and history teacher and band director at high schools in Battle Lake and North Branch, Minn., from 1932-1939. He then attended graduate school at University of Minnesota from 1939-1940 and received a master of arts degree in history. He taught American history in Wadena, Minn. from 1941-1942. In the summer of 1942 he was inducted into the U.S. Army and received a commission as an officer in the Army Signal Corps on April 9, 1943. He later served in the Southwest Pacific area in New Guinea and the Philippines, and was discharged in 1946. He attended the School of Business Administration at the University of Minnesota from 1948-1949, and was awarded a bachelor of business administration degree. From 1949-1963 he was employed as a statistical accountant by the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company at St. Paul, Minn. Since his retirement he has lived for short periods of time in California, Washington and Montana, and for several years at Alexandria, Minn. He moved to Bismarck in October 1988.

Arnold was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his sister, Anna Silness, Bismarck; two sisters-in-law, Helen Silness, Columbus, Ohio, and Arlene Silness, Janesville, Wis.; several nieces and nephews, including Phyllis Grimsrud Narveson, David Grimsrud and George Grimsrud, all formerly of Bismarck.

Otto Wolff
HEBRON -- Otto R. Wolff, 70, Hebron, died Nov. 26, 1997, in Richardton. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron, with burial at 2 p.m. CST Monday in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Serving as casketbearers will be Kellyn Wolff, Brody Wolff, Harvey Wolff, Steve Wolff, Adam Wolff and Brandon Klein.

Otto was born Nov. 6, 1927, in Mott, to Antone and Elizabeth (Barth) Wolff. He was raised and educated in Mott. In Dec. 1946 he entered the military, was stationed in Japan during the Korean War and served until August 1947. On Feb. 23, 1952, he married Carol Bleick. Otto worked for Soo Line Railroad, operated restaurants in Elgin, worked for the North Dakota State Highway Department and was tax director for Burleigh County until his retiring in 1990. On Aug. 25, 1984, he married Lavonne Knopp. Otto was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Lavonne; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Chris and Robin Peterson, Grand Forks, Debbie and Gene Klein, Manchester, Mo., and Desirae, Hebron; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert and Julie, Mandan, Daryl, Bismarck, and Scott and Lori, Burlington; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Marge, Bismarck, Bill and Jean, Dickinson, and John and Lillian, Dickinson; his mother, Elizabeth Frenzel, Dickinson; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Gertrude Franke
Gertrude "Gertie" Franke, 79, Turtle Lake, died Nov. 27, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, with burial in Turtle Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Gertrude Margaret Sackman was born July 15, 1918, in Hosmer, S.D., to John and Johanna (Knittel) Sackman. As a young girl, her family moved to Turtle Lake, where she attended school, and graduated from Turtle Lake High School. On Nov. 21, 1942, she married Walter Franke, at Medford, Ore. They made their home on a farm east of Turtle Lake. In 1980 they retired and moved into Turtle Lake. Gertie was well known for her sense of humor, her love of laughter and her artistic ability. She made beautiful quilts, porcelain dolls and Japanese embroidery pictures and also enjoyed crocheting.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Turtle Lake, where she was active in the church choir and the ladies functions. She was also a member of the Turtle Lake Senior Citizens Club, Turtle Lake American Legion Auxiliary, Study Club and Craft Club.

She is survived by her husband, Walter; one daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Scott Stromme, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, William and Barb, Mandan; six grandchildren; and one sister, Luella Clark, Sacramento, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister; and one brother.

Elwyn Johnson
Elwyn E. "Bud" Johnson, 78, Forsyth, Mont., died Nov. 8, 1997, in a Forsyth hospital. Services were held Nov. 11 at United Presbyterian Church, Forsyth. Cremation has taken place and interment of the urn will take place at a later date.

Bud was born Sept. 6, 1919, in Bismarck, the son of Leonard and Phoebe Skager Johnson. He spent his youth and graduated from high school in Hazen before serving in the Civilian Conservation Corp. In 1940, Bud entered the U.S. Army, serving in the 188th Field Artillery Division which was mostly comprised of young men from small towns throughout North Dakota. He served with distinction in Europe, participating in D-Day, Battle of the Bulge and numerous other campaigns throughout Germany. During this time Bud was awarded four Bronze Stars and one Silver Star. Following World War II, Bud returned to civilian life and during the Korean Conflict was called back into service, serving in Korea for two years.

On Feb. 28, 1959, Bud married Idah Kirkpatrick in Miles City, Mont. He worked for AT&T, requiring them to live in many places in Montana. Bud and Idah moved to Forsyth and have continued to live in Forsyth for the last 20 years. Bud was a member of Telephone Pioneers of America and the United Presbyterian Church in Forsyth.

He is survived by his wife, Idah; his daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and John Dyce, Louisville, Ky.; one sister, Ellyn Johnson, Seattle; his nephew, James Martin, Forsyth; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. (Beals Mortuary, Forsyth)

Corrine Backstrandt
Corrine Backstrandt, 79, Frazee, Minn., and formerly of Bismarck, died Nov. 2, 1997, in a Frazee nursing home. Further arrangements are pending with Fredrikson Funeral Chapel, Kindred.

Anton Holzer
Anton H. Holzer, "Tony", 85, 1813 N. Eighth St., Bismarck, died Nov. 2, 1997, in a local hospital of natural causes. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending with Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck.

Ladora Dalbol
Ladora Dalbol, 92, Moorhead, Minn., formerly of Tuttle, died Oct. 29, 1997, in a Moorhead nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, at English Lutheran Church, Tuttle.

Ladora Jacobs was born Oct. 6, 1905, in Adam County, Iowa, the daughter of the Rev. T.K. and Gertine (Lavik) Jacobs. She moved to Tuttle with her family in 1910, where she was raised and educated. After graduating from high school, she attended Ellendale Normal School and then Valley City State Teacher's College where she earned her teaching certificate.

On Dec. 24, 1927, she married Sigurd Dalbol in Tuttle. Following their marriage, they farmed northeast of Tuttle, and Ladora taught for several years in rural Kidder County schools. They retired and moved into Tuttle in 1962.

She was a lifetime member of English Lutheran Church, Tuttle, she was active in the North Kidder County Homemakers Club, and she loved singing, gardening, cooking, baking and crocheting.

They enjoyed traveling after their retirement, and they had the opportunity to see many of the areas of the United States. Mr. Dalbol died in 1982, and Ladora was still able to travel, enjoying a special visit to Scandinavia.

She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Luella and Wally Rawson, Detroit Lakes, Minn., Elsie and Jim DeKrey, Colton, S.D., Ruby and Gaylord Nelson, West Chester, Ohio, and Edna and Dave Baker, Culver City, Calif.; six sons and daughters-in-law, Nels Dalbol and Phyllis Germundson, Gordon and Arlene Dalbol, and Robert and Ava Dalbol, all of Moorhead; Harold and Carleen Dalbol, Hazen, Edward and Sharon Dalbol, Floriston, Calif., and John and Linda Dalbol, Mapleton; 34 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Constance Christensen; one brother, Carl Jacobs; and her husband, Sigurd. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Steele)

Reinhold Hoffmann
DENHOFF -- Reinhold Hoffmann, 81, rural Denhoff, died Oct. 31, 1997, in a Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Johns Lutheran Church, McClusky. Burial will be in McClusky City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Reinhold was born July 16, 1916, in Lincoln Valley, the son of John and Karolina (Docktor) Hoffmann. He was baptized on Aug. 20, 1916, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Lincoln Valley and was confirmed in the same church on June 14, 1931. He attended Schiller Township School No. 2 in Sheridan County. He lived on a farm northeast of Lincoln Valley and worked as a farmhand with his brother, Albert, from 1943 until retiring in 1984. He continued to live on the farm with his brother, Albert, during retirement.

He loved to sing, play with children, and work with animals, especially cattle.

He is survived by his brothers, Albert, Denhoff; two sisters, Lydia Bloomquist, Grand Marais, Minn., and Martha Janish, Spokane, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Christ, John, Fred and Karl; and three sisters, Katie, Caroline, and Christine. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)
