Gertrude Irish
Gertrude Irish, 93, Tacoma, Wash., and formerly of Dawson, died Feb. 18, 1998, in Washington. Services will be held 10 a.m. PST today, at Mount View Valley Chapel, Tacoma, with the Rev. John Maxwell officiating. Services will also be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel, Steele, with the Rev. Marvin Winstryg officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday, at Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Monday.

Gertrude was born on Nov. 3, 1904, in Bismarck, the daughter of George E. and Sena (Carrie) C. Jennings. She attended Bismarck High School. She taught in a rural one-room schoolhouse in McLean County. On June 25, 1925, she married Casper Irish in Bismarck. To this union, nine children were born. They farmed north of Bismarck until 1942. In the spring of 1942, they moved to Tacoma, Wash.

Gertrude was a 4-H leader for 15 years and a practical nurse. She was a member of Summit United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.

She is survived by six sons and five daughters-in-law, James, Port Orchard, Wash., Thomas and Verna, Terrance and Toni, and George, all of Tacoma, Harley and Brenda, Novato, Calif., John and Neda, Steele, and Sharon, Tacoma; one daughter and son-in-law, LaVern and Nobel Parham, Tacoma; 37 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Casper; one daughter, Virginia; one son, Jennings; one daughter-in-law, Dot; one sister, Sara West; and three brothers, George, John and Thomas Jennings. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Steele)

Pearl Flowers
Pearl L. Flowers, 86, Bismarck, died Feb. 25, 1998, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Richard Hagestuen officiating. Graveside services will be held at noon today at Center Community Cemetery.

Visitation will continue until service time at the funeral home today.

Pearl was born Sept. 23, 1911 in Oliver County, the daughter of Gilbert and Julia (Hove) Gullickson. She was raised and educated in Oliver County. On April 11, 1936 she married Paul Flowers in Center. They had farmed in the Sanger area until 1960, when they moved to the town of Center. In May 1984, she moved to Bismarck. She became a resident of the Baptist Nursing Home in May 1989.

Her family was an important part of her life.

She is lovingly survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Wayne Heinz, and Carol and ElRoy Haadem, all of Bismarck; one daughter-in-law, Isabel Flowers, Hanna, Wyo.; 12 grandchildren, Howell and Randy Flowers, Patty Zinke, Deb Wagner, Laurie Johnston, Jay Heinz, Jennifer Blasl, Jon and Jessica Heinz, Throy, Jerad, and Kristen Haadem; 11 great-grandchilren; one brother, Elmer, Center; and two sisters, Myrtle Klingenstein, New Salem, and Clara Klingenstein, Dayton, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her parents; one son, Doug; and four brothers. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Helen Mastel
STRASBURG -- Helen Mastel, 91, Strasburg, formerly of Linton, died Feb. 25, 1998, in the Linton hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton, with the Revs. Jeffrey Zwack and Tom Welk officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services, at the church.

Helen was born Feb. 5, 1907, on a farm near Hague, the daughter of John and Anna (Hager) Welk. She attended a rural school. On Oct. 23, 1928, she married Valentine Mastel at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Strasburg. They moved to Trail City, S.D., where they farmed until 1929 when they returned to a farm near Hague. In 1962 they moved into Linton. Valentine died July 17, 1993. Helen entered the Strasburg Nursing Home in September 1994.

Helen was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church of Linton, Christian Mothers, Linton Senior Citizens and Linton Senior Citizens Singers. She liked to crochet and play cards.

Grateful to have shared her life are her five sons and daughters-in-law, Aloys and Angela Mastel, Ellendale, Willie and Virginia Mastel, Dickinson, Leo and Rita Mastel, Zeeland, Gene and Marlene Mastel, Mandan, and Duane and Carlene Mastel, Fargo; two daughters and one son-in-law, Delores (Hulm) Kramer, Strasburg, and Alvina and William Voller, Mobridge, S.D.; 28 grandchildren; and 48 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers; two sisters and two grandchildren. (Myers Funeral Home, Linton)

Clair Porter
Clair C. Porter, 94, Bethel Lutheran Nursing Home, Williston, died Feb. 24, 1998, in a Williston nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. today, at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Hensel Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to services at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Clair was born on April 11, 1903 in Moffit, the son of Everett and Minnie (Wallenhaupt) Porter. He was raised in the Moffit community. He married Helen Faust on Feb. 14, 1942. He served in the United States Army from 1942 until 1944. After his discharge, they farmed east of Moffit. They retired in 1966, moved into Moffit and later to Bismarck. In September 1997, they moved to Williston.

He was a life member of Bismarck Eagles and a charter member of Moffit Lions Club. He served as an assessor for Wildrose and Long Lake Townships for several years and as a Moffit School Board member.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; one daughter Eileen and son-in-law, Leonard Porter, Williston; one granddaughter, Shelly Sikes and her husband, Joel; one great-granddaughter, Anna Clairice Sikes, Minot; two nieces, Sharon (Edwards) Sundby and her husband, Alan, Moffit, and Beverly (Edwards) Davis and her husband, Vern, Mandan; and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Beth Edwards. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Carl Smith
WILLISTON -- Carl Smith, 74, Williston, died Feb. 25, 1998, in Williston. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at Faith United Methodist Church, Williston, with the Rev. Ross Reinhiller officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, at Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, also at the funeral home. There will be a family service at 6 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

Carl became a partner in Ideal Mobile Home Sales in Dickinson and in 1961, moved to Williston where he managed the branch office until 1985, when the business closed. In 1986, with his wife, Gloria, he opened Smith's Camper and Mobile Home Supplies until 1990, when they retired due to Carl's heath.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Douglas and Leslee, Bismarck, and Craig, Hilo, Hawaii; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Yolanda and James Fransen, Williston, Sandra Ganje, Bismarck, and Diana and Timothy Anderson, Casper, Wyo.; 13 grandchildren; one sister, Ola Fitzgerald, Duncan, Okla.; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers; two sisters; two nieces and three nephews; one son-in-law; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be given to Faith United Methodist Church or Bethel Lutheran Home, both of Williston. (Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston)

Molly Van Heukelom
STRASBURG -- Molly Van Heukelom, 90, Strasburg, formerly of Linton, died Feb. 26, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at United Methodist Church, Linton. Burial will be in Westfield Cemetery, Westfield.

She is survived by seven sons, Bernice and Willis, both of Herreid, S.D., Glen, Hudsonville, Mich., Jerald, Wyoming, Mich., Jerome, River Falls, Wis., Leroy, Baldwin, Wis., and Roger, Bismarck; four daughters, Kathryn Lovo, Pollock, S.D., Loretta Compaan, Westfield, Elizabeth Dykema, Dickinson, and Pearl Miller, Hague; one brother, Clinton Berndt, Wahpeton; and one sister, Martha Smith, Everett, Wash. Helen Hourigan
Helen C. Hourigan, 84, Lemmon, S.D., died Feb. 25, 1998, in a Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. MST Monday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Lemmon. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Lemmon.

She is survived by three sons, Bill and Bob, both of Lemmon, and Jim, Sharpsburg, Ga.; one daughter, Colleen Chaulk, Gillette, Wyo.; one brother, Bill Malloy, Ruskin, Fla.; and three sisters, Leola Schuldt, Sioux Falls, S.D., Mildred Theisen, Lillian, Ala., and Charlotte Smith, Shadehill, S.D. Phyllis Fischer
GARRISON -- Phyllis L. Fischer, 42, Garrison, died Feb. 25, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison. Burial will be in Emmanuel Cemetery, rural Garrison.

She is survived by her husband, Craig; three sons, Jody and Jason, both of Grand Forks, and Joshua, at home; her parents, Dave and Louise Esslinger, Garrison; three brothers, Glenn Esslinger, Watford City, Gary Esslinger, Upham, and Dennis Esslinger, Garrison. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

Emma Schock
GARRISON -- Emma Schock, 87, Garrison, died Feb. 26, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital of natural causes. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at First United Church of Christ, Garrison. Burial will be in Garrison Cemetery.

She is survived by three sons, Walter, Spokane, Wash., Carl, Benedict, and Wilbert, Minot; and two daughters, Lorraine Evenson, Garrison, and Irene Geiser, Billings, Mont. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

Josie Palanuk
GLEN ULLIN -- Josie Palanuk, 84, Glen Ullin, died Feb. 26, 1998, in a Glen Ullin nursing home. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Wednesday, in Belfield.

She is survived by one brother, Mike, Garrison; and one sister, Stella Johnson, Strandburg, S.D. (Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin)

Michael J. Zalesky Weigel
DICKINSON -- Michael J. Zalesky Weigel, five months old, Dickinson, son of Clint Weigel and Stacey Zalesky, died Feb. 27, 1998, at home. Arrangements are pending with Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

The service for Margaret Mollman, 86, Lemmon, S.D., has been rescheduled for 1 p.m. MST, Monday, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Watauga, S.D. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Lemmon)

Elizabeth Armbrust
DICKINSON -- Elizabeth Armbrust, 99, Dickinson, died Feb. 27, 1998, in a Dickinson hospital. Arrangements are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Joseph Frederick
RICHARDTON -- Joseph J. Frederick, 61, Richardton, died Feb. 27, 1998, his home. Arrangements are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Murlin Christianson
Murlin "Christy" Christianson, 71, 1707 LaForest Ave., died Sept. 27, 1998, of natural causes at his home. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Church of Saint Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Roger Synek officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with full military rites provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Service. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Christy was born Sept. 1, 1927, at Drake, the son of Oscar and Beatrice Christianson. He graduated from Drake High School in 1946 and enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in Japan until his discharge in 1948. Christy started working for the North Dakota State Highway Department in 1948. He was recalled into the Army in 1950, served until 1951, and then resumed his employment with the Highway Department. He married Phyllis Reep of Stanley on June 27, 1952. They were married for 42 years until her death in 1994. He worked for the Highway Department for 43 years until his retirement in 1991.

Christy was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 40 et 8,and the Elks. His interests included woodworking, golfing, playing cards and spending time at his cabin at Brush Lake.

Christy is survived by two daughters, Debi, Bismarck, and Patti, Coon Rapids, Minn.; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Scott and David, both of Longmount, Colo., and Kelly and Jackie, Orion, Mich.; one sister, Marlys Sauer, Billings, Mont.; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; his parents and two brothers.

Memorial may be sent to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery or St. Alexius Hospice. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Rosella Richter
Rosella Marie Richter, 57, 612 E. Columbia Drive, Bismarck, died Sept. 28, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation begins Wednesday from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Rosella was born July 29, 1941, at Dickinson, to Mike and Katherine (Chruszch) Namyniuk. She grew up in Belfield and graduated from Belfield High School in 1960. She married Larry Richter on Jan. 19, 1961, at the Medora Lutheran Church. They lived in Belfield, Dickinson, and moved to Bismarck in 1969. She had worked for Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center for 18 years.

She is survived by her husband, Larry; three daughters, Carmen Fanous, Bismarck, Glynis Richter, Plymouth, Minn., and Shelly Richter, Minneapolis; two sons, Rodman Richter, New York, N.Y., and Ron Richter, Bismarck; one sister, Shirley Kessel, Evenston, Wyo.; one brother, Rudy Namyniuk, Bismarck; and four grandchildren, Nicole and Matthew Doerr, and Kevin and Hanna Fanous.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Michael.

The family prefers memorials to Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Troy Rudolph
DAWSON -- Troy S. Rudolph, 24, Dawson, died Sept. 27, 1998, at his home of muscular dystrophy. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tappen, with the Rev. William Russow officiating. Burial will be in Fisher Cemetery, Tappen.

Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Steele.

Troy Rudolph was born Oct. 18, 1973, in Bismarck, the son of Donnie and Pam (Kalainov) Rudolph. He was raised and educated at Steele-Dawson. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Troy enjoyed reading, birdwatching, video games, computers and watching sports. He always kept abreast of news and current events. Troy especially enjoyed spending time with his friends and relatives. He always knew how to bring a smile to your face with his great sense of humor.

Troy is survived by his parents, Donnie and Pam; his sister and brother-in-law, Tammy and Jon Dockter, Bismarck; his grandparents, Nick and Coletta Kalainov, Steele; his great-grandparents, George Kalainov Sr. and Cletus Regner, both of Steele; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Beverly and Edward Rudolph; and his cousin, Benji Dewald. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Steele and Bismarck)

Ann Adair Lunde
Ann Adair M. Lunde, 76, Mandan, died Sept. 25, 1998, in a Mandan care center. Memorial services will be held at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Valley City, at 2 p.m. today, with the Rev. Charles Plaster officiating. Burial will be private.

Ann Adair (Moe) was born on March 6, 1922, in Minneapolis, the daughter of Erwin and Louella (Hermanson) Moe. She married Joseph M. Lunde on May 4, 1944, in Marana, Ariz. Ann Adair loved to sew and go bowling. She was dearly loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph M.; her daughters, Carole Olson and husband, Marcus, Phoenix, Ariz., and Karen Hammond and her husband, Donald, Mandan; one son, Joseph J. and his wife, Martee, Valley City; her mother, Louella Moe, Hopkins, Minn.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Jack Moe, Plymouth, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimers Association in Bismarck. (Bismarck Funeral Home)
