DICKINSON -- Myrtle Engraf, 83, Dickinson, formerly of New England, died April 3, 1998, in a Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday, at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, New England. Further arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Joseph Hettel
HURDSFIELD -- Joseph Hettel, 89, rural Hurdsfield, died April 2, 1998, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hurdsfield. Further arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden.

Lawerence VerDouw
Lawrence J. VerDouw, 77, was called home by our Lord on April 3, 1998, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, with the Rev. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial will take place following a memorial service at the Church of the Transfiguration in Edgeley at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Duane Cote officiating.

There will be visitation in the church one hour before each service.

Lawrence J. "Larry" VerDouw was born in McIntosh, S.D. on May 10, 1920, the first born of Benjamin and Bertha VerDouw. Larry graduated from McIntosh High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, working in the Map Compilation Squadron, making maps from aerial photographs. After his service to his country, he attended the University of South Dakota. He then attended the American Institute of Air in Minneapolis and was hired as a disc jockey for radio station KABR in Aberdeen, S.D.

Larry married Anna "Ann" DeCrans in Aberdeen on Sept. 11, 1948. In 1951, they moved to Edgeley, where Larry took a job as a bookkeeper at James Valley Electric Cooperative. Larry retired as Office Manager at James Valley in June of 1982. Larry also served on the Edgeley Park Board, was the Edgeley city auditor for many years and was a member of the supervisory committee at the local credit union. He was also involved in many church and civic affairs. Larry and Ann enjoyed retirement in Edgeley until 1993, at which time they moved to Bismarck.

Larry enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandchildren, attending many of their activities. Larry was a member of the Elks and Knights of Columbus. He and Ann were also members of Cathedral Parish and were frequent participants in activities at the Bismarck Senior Center. In February 1998, they were chosen as nominees for the Senior Valentine's Day King and Queen, an honor they truly enjoyed.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 49[1/2] years, Ann; four daughters and twin sons, Patricia VerDouw and her sons, Greg and Justin Goettle, Grimes, Iowa, Pam and Jay Vocke, Todd and Chris, Ellicott City, Md.; Rita and Merlyn Lepp, Marvin and Wayne, Bismarck; Doug and Joan VerDouw, Hayley and Katelyn, Bismarck; Gary and Kathy VerDouw, Brian, Bethany and Thomas, Bismarck; and Janeen and Andrew Dosch, Ryan and Evan, Bismarck. Larry is also survived by one sister, Ethel Johnson; and two brothers, Harry and Paul.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Gregory; and one granddaughter, Lindsey VerDouw.

He will be truly missed by all.

Frances Messmer
Frances "Faye" Messmer, 75, St. Vincent's Care Center, Bismarck, died April 8, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11-30 a.m. Wednesday, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday, a parish vigil will be said at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, both at Weigel Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Wednesday for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Faye was born on April 21, 1923, in Glen Ullin, the daughter of Frank and Rose (Frohlich) Lanz. She was raised and educated in Glen Ullin. On Feb. 5, 1946, she married Robert Messmer. They made their home in Mandan. Robert died on Nov. 28, 1975. She was employed as waitress at the Patterson Hotel and the G.P. Hotel in Bismarck and Jerry's Supper Club in Mandan.

Faye was a member of the Moose Club and the Huff Homemakers. She did volunteer work for the Welcome Wagon and the Mandan Hospital Gift Shop.

She is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law, Dean and Sharon, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Rolland and Corky, and Gary, all of Mandan, and Terry and Mary, Bismarck; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Elaine Speaks, Bismarck, and Mary Ann and Jace Prince, Round Rock, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her spouse, Bob; four brothers, John, James, Raymond and Edward Lanz; and one sister, Irene Miller.

A special thank you to the staff of St. Vincent's Care Center for their kindness, caring and compassion during mom's last years.

Commemorative gifts may be made to St. Vincent's Care Center, Bismarck, to help them purchase a new van. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Dorothy Johnson
Dorothy Johnson, 98, Karrington Commons, died April 8, 1999, at her home, where she had been a resident since November of 1987. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Boelter Funeral Home Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Gordon Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Sunne Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Wilton.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today, and for one hour prior to services on Monday, at Boelter Funeral Home.

Dorothy was born on Jan. 2, 1901, on a farm six miles northeast of Wilton. She was the ninth child (and the baby) born to Daniel and Anna (Thor) Johnson, who immigrated from Sweden and Norway. Daniel and Anna were in their mid-teens when they left their homelands to come to the United States. They settled in Pippin, Wis., and later moved to North Dakota to homestead.

Dorothy attended country school and did so well in school she would get ahead of the rest of the class. She then received a few days off while the class caught up to her.

She loved to read and write and communicated through letters with people all over the country. She also liked embroidery, crocheting and tatting. At an early age, she taught herself to play piano and often was asked to play for her church.

When Dorothy was 18, she started to lose her hearing. Because of her hearing loss, she continued to live at home on the farm.

She devoted much of her time to her church and God and often would go to the Karrington ballroom to play the hymns she so loved.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and three sisters. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)

Emil Stoltz Jr.
Emil M. Stoltz Jr., 79, died April 6, 1999, in a Joliet, Ill. hospital following a long illness. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. April 25 at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, Joliet.

Emil was born Feb. 21, 1920, in Mandan. He graduated from St. Joseph Catholic Grade School, Mandan High School, NDSU-Bottineau and University of North Dakota, Grand Forks. He moved to Joliet in 1942 to work at the Joliet Arsenal. In 1945 he went to work for Olin/Blockson Works as a chemist, and later as a manager, retiring in 1976.

He served on the Laraway School Board for 17 years, and was a member of Joliet Elks Lodge No. 296 for 55 years. Before his illness, he was an avid writer to the Letters to the Editor in the Herald News. He was a member and supporter of the University of North Dakota Alumni Association for more than 50 years.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey (Thanepohn) Stoltz; two sons, Stuart and Robert; four grandsons, Stuart Jr. and his wife, Debby Pacin, and Jeremy, Nathan and Kyle Stoltz; three granddaughters, Andre and her husband, Wayne Viktora, Amy and her husband, Darrin Lawler, and Ann Marie Stoltz-Girard; two great-grandchildren, Shane Lawler and Gabrielle Viktora; his mother-in-law, Emma Thanepohn; a sister-in-law, Donna Stoltz; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil Sr. and Mary (Miller) Stoltz; his first wife, Betty (Marlette) Stoltz; and his brother, Eugene Stoltz.

As was Emil's request, he is donating his body to science at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to American Lung Association in his name. (Fred C. Dames West Chapel, Joliet)

Magdalen Lindquist
DICKINSON -- Magdalen Lindquist, 87, Dickinson, died April 8, 1999, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MDT Monday, at St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson. Burial will be in Dickinson Cemetery.

She is survived by her hsuband, Clarence, Dickinson; three sons, Dennis, Dickinson, and Dean and James, both of Bismarck; two brothers, August and Albert Hauck, both of Golden Valley; and one sister, Mary Baird, Brooksville, Fla. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

Merle Lee
MAX -- Merle Lee, 84, Max, died April 9, 1999, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Max. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Max.

He is survived by one daughter, LaVon Kjonaas, Bismarck; his sons, Wayne, Cortez, Colo., and David, Max; one brother, Martin, Sidney, Mont.; and three sisters, Lillian Torgerson, Bismarck, and Ruth Lunden and Nina Olan, both of Williston. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

CARRINGTON -- Carol Helm, 67, Carrington, died April 9, 1999, in the Carrington health center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Calvary Baptist Church, Carrington. Further arrangements are pending with Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

John Koffler Sr.
John B. Koffler Sr., 86, Mandan, died April 10, 1999, in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

ALAMO -- Roy Lohse, 75, Alamo, died April 9, 1999, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Calvary Lutheran Church, Alamo. Further arrangements are pending with Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

John Ehresmann Sr.
DICKINSON -- John Ehresmann Sr., 79, Dickinson, died April 10, 1999, in a Dickinson hospital. Arrangements are pending with Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.

Simon Koenig
STEELE -- Simon Koenig, 89, Steele and formerly of Rugby, died April 10, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Bismarck Funeral Home.

Floyd Ryckman
Floyd Ryckman, 75, Pollock, S.D., died April 10, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

John Koffler Sr.
John B. Koffler Sr., 86, Medcenter One Care Center, Mandan, died April 10, 1999, in the center. Services will be 10-30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 p.m. followed by a parish vigil at 7:30 p.m.

John was born Dec. 24, 1912, the son of Peter and Mary (Dinius) Koffler, the fourth of 13 children. He attended a local country school and grew up in Taylor. Upon completion of Moler Barber College in 1934, he moved to Braddock for a short time, then worked at the Lewis and Clark Hotel in Mandan as a barber. He married Rose Erhardt on Oct. 19, 1936, in Center.

After moving to Glen Ullin in 1940 and barbering there for 40 years, he returned to Mandan in 1974 to open a one-chair barber shop in his home. During his semi-retirement, he spent his spare time cutting hair, fixing old clocks and watches, "tinkering" with other projects and visiting his farm in Taylor. He was a puzzle and checkers aficionado -- the family discovered he was the winner of these games to the point where it was hard to find someone who wanted to challenge him.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mandan, and had belonged to Knights of Columbus in Glen Ullin. He had been an active bowler in the 1950s.

He is survived by his wife, Rose; two daughters, Alice Carson, Fargo, and Connie Schiff, Mandan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Joan, Vancouver, Wash., and John Jr. and Sandy, West Fargo; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray and Betty Koffler, Bismarck, Frank and Marie Koffler, Dickinson, and Felix and Rose Koffler, Oregon City, Ore.; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Lillian Hamann, Dickinson, and Gloria and Al Hunt, Woodburn, Ore.; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Emil, Ed, Mark, Gilbert, Joe, and Al; one sister, Ella Roll; one infant brother, Michael; and one infant sister, Anna. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Simon Koenig
STEELE -- Simon Koenig, 89, Steele, formerly of Rugby, died April 10, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Apostle Church, Minot. Burial will be in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bismarck Funeral Home. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church.

Simon was born March 10, 1910, in Pierce County, to Frederick and Anna (Volk) Koenig. He married Magdalena Volk on Oct. 7, 1929, at St. Anselm Catholic Church in Fulda. He was a musician and had his own band that performed throughout the Rugby community for many years. Simon worked for the Highway Department in the Devils Lake area.

He and Lena moved to the Rugby area and farmed in Pierce County until they moved to Minot in 1959, and again moved to Bismarck in 1996.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Delores, Rugby, and Ralph and Madonna, Edina, Minn.; two daughters, Rose Bundy, Bismarck, and Irene Koenig, Bismarck; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his son, Stanley; his brothers, Pete and John; and one sister, Margaret.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Ann Ehresmann, Remlap, Ala., and Kathleen Ward, Fairfax, Va.; four sisters, Bertha Wanner, Dickinson, Betty Sperricone, Seatonville, Ill., Rose Dukart and Eleanor Webber, both of Dickinson; and one brother, Michael F.
