Paula Mickelson
Paula Mickelson, 51, Bellevue, Neb., went to meet her Lord Jan. 13, 1998, in a Omaha, Neb. nursing home. Services were held Jan. 16 at St. John's Methodist Church, Omaha. Burial will be June 5, 1998, in Washburn.

Paula was born June 5, 1946, in Underwood to Quay and Leona (Schacher) Petersen. They family moved to Drake in her sophomore year where she graduated from high school. She married Gordon Michelson from Albert Lea, Minn., on May 29, 1965. Her husband was in the Air Force and they lived in North Dakota, South Dakota, Miss., Kansas, Nebraska, and Okinawa. She made her home in Bellevue, for the last 17 years.

She worked at Sears, Target, Data Control and up until her illness at the Sinclair Station in Bellevue. She loved to read and crochet for her children and grandchildren, whom she loved and adored.

She is survived by her father, Quay Petersen, Washburn; one daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Thomas Franco, Lane Grove, Okla.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Michael and Mary, Bellevue, and Mark, Council Bluffs, Iowa; five grandchildren, Joshua, Thomas, Paige, Zachary and Anthony; one sister, Arva Del Petersen, Mandan; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Leighton and Sherri, Billings, Mont., Lynn and Melinda, and Tim and Kristi, all of Bismarck; seven nieces and nephews; and many special friends and relatives. Also one special friend, Debbie Heavy, Bellevue.

She was preceded in death by her mother; grandmother; three uncles; and one nephew.

Florence Nelson
HAZEN -- Florence Nelson, 90, Hazen, died Feb. 2, 1998, in the Beulah nursing home. Services will be 11 a.m. MST Friday at English Lutheran Church, Hazen, with the Rev. Bill Wagner officiating.

Serving as pallbearers will be Florence's grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. today, at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.

Florence was born Nov. 6, 1907, in Oliver County, a daughter of Howard and Maude (Brown) Hendry. She was raised and educated south of Hazen and graduated from high school in Florida.

Florence received her teaching certificate from Dickinson State Teachers College and taught at several rural schools, including Deapolis, Price and Nebo.

On Nov. 24, 1934, she married Edward Nelson. They purchased a ranch southwest of Hazen in 1943. She continued teaching at Center, Stanton, Hazen, Golden Valley and Hebron.

Edward died in 1965 and Florence retired in 1968, after teaching for approximately 40 years. She became a resident of Knife River Care Center in Beulah on Aug. 11, 1997.

Florence was a member of English Lutheran Church, Hazen, and had been active in the Ladies Aid. She was also a member of a homemakers club, an active member of Hazen Senior Citizens and had served as a 4-H leader. Florence enjoyed reading, cooking, baking and playing piano.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Don Huber, Hazen; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Clayton, Great Falls, Mont., Dayton and Shannon, Ogden, Utah, and James and Karen, Great Falls, Mont.; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; 11 step great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ferne Olds and Jean and John Bonney, all of Lynnwood, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward; four brothers and one sisters. (Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)

Renee Pape
Renee H. Pape, 38, 1309 N. 17th St., Bismarck, died Feb. 4, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Jeff Franko and Lisa Ahlness officiating. Burial will be in McClusky Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church.

Renee Lynn Helm was born on Sept. 14, 1959, in Harvey, the daughter of Marvin and Beatrice (Hieb) Helm. She grew up on a rural farm near McClusky, where she also attended school. She graduated from McClusky High School in 1977.

She then attended Minot State University, graduated with a bachelor's degree in Social Work in 1982. Later that year, she moved to Bismarck, where she worked for Prairie Estates, Pride Inc., HIT, and most recently, with Support Systems Incorporated.

She married James Pape on Sept. 29, 1984, in Bismarck.

Over the last four years, Renee has exerted a great deal of energy towards battling breast cancer. Through this energy, many dedicated friends have assisted and supported her in her quest for recovery. She always has expressed a great deal of gratitude towards all these special people.

Renee's greatest joy in her life were her two sons, Jeffrey, age 10, and Jordan, age 6. She enjoyed watching her sons' hockey skills develop.

She is survived by her husband, Jim; two sons, Jeffrey and Jordan, both at home; her mother and stepfather, Beatrice and Emanuel Schauer, Underwood; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gordon and Lorraine Pape, Minneapolis; one brother, Mark Helm, Bismarck; one grandmother, Julia Hieb, McClusky; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and many special friends across the country.

She was preceded in death by her father, Marvin Helm; and three grandparents. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Helen Sonnek
BEACH -- Helen M. Sonnek, 92, Beach, died Feb. 4, 1998, in a Beach nursing home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. MST Saturday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Beach. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She is survived by four sons, Kenneth, Livingston, Mont., Maurice, Bishop, Calif., Karnes, Kalispell, Mont., and Merl, Pierre, S.D.; one daughter, Sharon Carney, Rockville, Md.; and two sisters, Bernice Szudera, Beach, and Mamie Scherman, Wibaux, Mont. (Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Beach)

Norman Stueckrath
DRISCOLL -- Norman Lee Stueckrath, 63, Driscoll, died Feb. 2, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel, Steele, with the Rev. John Owens officiating.

Norman was born on April 14, 1934 in McLean, Neb., the son of Lewis and Ida (Kruger) Stueckrath. He was raised and educated in Plainview, Neb.

After high school, Norman owned and operated many different businesses in Nebraska, Minnesota, and North Dakota. Norman had resided in the Driscoll area for fourteen years, where he farmed.

He is survived by a companion and best friend, Audrey Sims; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Greg Stueckrath, Stevensville, Mont., and Kam and Deb Stueckrath, Plainview, Neb.; one daughter, Joette Steilen, Dayton, Wyo.; seven grandchildren; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Eugene and Lois, Butch and Norma, Jack and Doreen, Roger and Dona Rene, and Dick and Jeannine, all of Nebraska, and Lou and Janet, Colorado; one sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Wayne Seguila, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Don. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Steele)

William Wolf
NAPOLEON -- William E. Wolf, 72, Napoleon, died Feb. 3, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Napoleon, with burial in Napoleon Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; one daughter, Delilah Jangula, Napoleon; two sisters, Emma Sunde, Napoleon, and Alice Kemmet, Bismarck; and three brothers, Anton, Leo and Marvin, all of Napoleon. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon)

Reinhold Berg
Reinhold S. Berg, 88, Bismarck, formerly of Wing, died Feb. 5, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

GARRISON -- Hazel Stumboll, 94, Garrison, died Feb. 5, 1998, in the Garrison nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

Joseph Berger, 86, Kennewick, Wash., died Feb. 4, 1998, in Kennewick. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony. Further arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Eva Richter
GOODRICH -- Eva Richter, 91, Goodrich, died Feb. 4, 1998, in a Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Peace Lutheran Church, Goodrich. Further arrangements are pending with Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Kenneth Schell
Kenneth Schell, 56, 112 Buffalo St. West, Mandan, died Feb. 4, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Helen Boe
Helen Boe, 85, Minneapolis, died Jan. 26, 1998, in a Minneapolis hospital. Services were held on Jan. 29, 1998, in Christ Lutheran Church, Minneapolis.

She is survived by her husband, Alvin; and two brothers, Lawrence Kroeger, New Salem, and John Geissler, Daytona Beach, Fla.

Esther Christenson
MINNEWAUKAN -- Esther Christenson, 93, Minnewaukan, died Feb. 4, 1998, in a Devils Lake hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at First Presbyterian Church, Minnewaukan. Further arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Minnewaukan.

Viola Quill
Viola Quill, 69, Bismarck, died Feb. 4, 1998, in the Underwood nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Saturday, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, New Leipzig. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, New Leipzig.

She is survived by one son, Dennis Bahm, Rapid City, S.D.; one sister, Alma Fuchs, Lodi, Calif.; and one brother, Richard Baesler, New Leipzig. (Hertz Brothers Funeral Home, New Leipzig).

Elna Sears
DEVILS LAKE -- Elna M. Sears, 81, Devils Lake and formerly of Minnewaukan, died Feb. 4, 1998, in a Devils Lake nursing home. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Minnewaukan. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Gary, Minnewaukan, and Rodney, Devils Lake; and one sister, Emma Westrum, Devils Lake. (Nelson Funeral Home, Minnewaukan)

Ernestine Kelly
DICKINSON -- Ernestine H. Kelly, 82, Dickinson, died Feb. 4, 1998, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Monday, at First Congregational-United Church of Christ, Mott. Burial will be in Sunnyslope Cemetery, Mott.

She is survived by her husband, Fabian; three sons, Vernon and Elmer, both of Glendive, Mont., and Clarence, Laramie, Wyo.; three daughters, Eileen Goeschel, Lodi, Calif., Loretta Davis, Deer Trail, Wyo., and Emy Baumgartner, Dickinson; and three sisters, Della Roehl and Luella Kleinjan, both of Missoula, Mont., and Annette Carroll, Prescott, Ariz. Alvin Schmiess
Dr. Alvin A. Schmiess, 79, Bremerton, Wash., died Feb. 3, 1998, in a Forest Ridge nursing home, Bremerton. Services were held Feb. 5, 1998, at First United Methodist Church, Bremerton. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Alvin was born Feb. 15, 1918 in Munich, N.D. He was a graduate from the State School of Science in Wahpeton. He served with the Armored Force of the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945, and saw action in Tunisia, Sicily, Italy and France. On Dec. 6, 1945, he married Juanita P. Sinquefield, daughter of Will and Ellen Sinquefield in Senatobia, Miss. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 1950. He practiced for 10 years in Langdon prior to moving to Jamestown, where he practiced for 20 years, retiring in 1980.

Dr. Schmiess served as president of the North Dakota Dental Association in 1974, and was the executive director of the North Dakota Dental Association for five years. He also served as administrative secretary of the North Dakota State Board of Dental Examiners from 1983 until 1988. Dr. Schmiess served on the city council as an alderman from the first ward for six years. He was a past president of the Jamestown Country Club, the Jamestown Quarterback Club, and Jamestown Lions Club.

He and his wife moved to Bremerton in 1989, where he was a member of First United Methodist Church, Bremerton, Bremerton Bridge Club, American Legion, V.F.W., and Elks. He was also a life member of Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Linda Instad and David Weber, Seattle, Wash., and Carole and Geary Heine, Silverdale, Wash.; one brother and sister-in-law, R.R. and Mary, Munich; one sister, Darline Schmiess, Graham, Wash.; three grandchildren; seven nephews and two nieces.
