Joseph Wanner
HEBRON -- Joseph H. Wanner, 78, Hebron, died April 10, 1998, in Hebron. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Hebron, with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Monday at the church, where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Monday, followed by a parish rosary at 7:45.

Joseph was born Feb. 10, 1920, near Hebron, the son of Christian and Elizabeth (Burger) Wanner. He was raised and educated near Hebron, and then farmed in the area. He married Viola Ann Kastner on Nov. 16, 1948, at St. Clements Church in Haymarsh. They started a farmstead east of Hebron. Joe's passion in life was caring for Viola and farming. In his spare time he enjoyed a good card game when one could be found. Joe enjoyed being around people and being with people. He retired in 1984 and moved into Hebron. He worked with wood and passed the time tinkering in his shop.

He was a member of Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Lions, Brick City Seniors and the Fire Protection District Board.

He is survived by his wife, Viola; four sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Irene, Columbus, Mont., Tim and Gloria, Mandan, Joe and Diane, Hebron, and David and Cheryl, Hebron; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Vernon Kapp, Mandan, and Debbie and Jim Baumler, Casselton; 23 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Margaret Nemez, Glen Ullin, and Elizabeth Freitag, Glen Ullin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Billy and Jeffrey; one sister, Eva; and two brothers, Christ and John.

Harold Carlson
GARRISON -- Harold F. Carlson, 94, Garrison, formerly of Turtle Lake, died April 10, 1998, in the Garrison hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Turtle Lake, with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Monday at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake.

Harold was born Feb. 19, 1904, in Olmstead County, Minn., to John and Clara (Torgerson) Carlson where he was raised and educated. He farmed near Rochester before moving to Turtle Lake in 1936. He married Clara Nelson on June 12, 1936. They farmed near Turtle Lake before moving to Underwood in 1979. She died in 1983. Harold worked as an assessor and clerk of the Crooked Lake School District.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Paulette Carlson, Bismarck; three granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

Gordon Weekes
CARSON -- Gordon S. Weekes, 81, Carson, died April 10, 1998, in the Glen Ullin nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Carson, with the Rev. Dale Carmen officiating. Burial will be in Fairhill Cemetery, Flasher.

Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Monday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Gordon was born Feb. 8, 1917, at Flasher, the son of Arthur and Alma (Johnson) Weekes. He married Dorothy Grimm on May 16, 1939, in Bismarck. He farmed north of Flasher before moving to Carson in 1954. He worked in the trucking business and on road construction for a few years before his employment doing road maintenance for Grant County. He retired in 1987 due to an eye injury. Gordon was a simple man who played the accordion, enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and taking his family on car rides.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jeannette and Pius Koch, Mandan, and Garda and Jerold Hoirup, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey Sr. and Beverly Weekes, Bismarck; eight grandchildren, Carey, Kyle and Kevin Koch, Kimberly Schafre, Jeffrey Jr., Sonya and Angela Weekes and Cody Cannon; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Anton and Florence Weekes, Bismarck, Arthur Jr. and Darlene Weekes, Carson, and Norman and Bonnie Weekes, Port Angeles, Wash.; and one sister, Leanor Wright, Flasher.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Alvin; one son; and one grandson.

Marilyn Helm
Marilyn I. Helm, 63, Bismarck, died April 10, 1998, at her home after a brief illness. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Stephen P. Juergenson officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at McClusky Cemetery.

Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Marilyn was born Dec. 3, 1934, near McClusky, the daughter of John and Gladys (Broeckel) Reiser. She was raised and educated near McClusky. She married Walter Helm on June 15, 1952. They farmed south of McClusky until 1977. They moved to Bowdon and lived there until 1988, when they moved to Bismarck.

Marilyn enjoyed working on the farm very much. Her other interests were her collection of bears, working in the garden, crocheting, fishing and traveling.

Marilyn's greatest love in life was her family and grandchildren, and she enjoyed the time spent with them.

She is survived by her husband, Walter; two daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Dallas Pfennig, McClusky, and Paula and Ben Johnston, Sykeston; one son, Mitchell Helm, Athens, Ala.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Delmar and Carol Reiser, and Arlie and Shirley Reiser, all of McClusky; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Viola and John Heil, McClusky, and Verla and Ted Kundert, Eugene, Ore., and Leona Werner, Bismarck; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mary Lyne
NAPOLEON -- Mary A. Lyne, 91, Houston, Texas, formerly of Napoleon, died April 9, 1998, in Houston. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon, with the Rev. James Lauerman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Jim Olig will serve as organist for the service, with special music provided by Danita Bitz. Pallbearers for the service are James Feigum, James Silbernagel, Marvin Wentz, Alois Schumacher, Joseph Fettig and Lawrence Naaden.

Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Tuesday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon, where a rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation will continue after 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Mary was born Oct. 1, 1906, near Napoleon, the daughter of John and Eleanora (Schlosser) Heisler. She grew up in the Napoleon area where she received her elementary education, later attending and graduating from Bismarck High School and Ellendale Normal Teachers College. She taught rural grade school and was employed by Logan County in the register of deeds office. Mary married August Doerr on July 26, 1930, at Fargo. They returned to Napoleon to make their home. Besides being an active housewife and mother, Mary worked closely with her husband in his law practice and title insurance company. In addition she was active in many church and social organizations in Napoleon. Following Mr. Doerr's death on Jan. 25, 1968, she resided in Rossmoor Leisure World, Walnut Creek, Calif., Sun City, Ariz., and in June 1997, she moved to Brighton Gardens Tanglewood, Houston.

Mary was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, having been a former parishioner of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church at Napoleon, and a current member of St. Michael Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters and Sodality. Mary was also a life member of the auxiliary of the North Dakota Bar Association.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John A. and Rosemarie Doerr, Twin Falls, Idaho; two daughters, Delores Doerr, Houston, and Patricia Doerr, Cleveland Heights, Ohio; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, August; her parents; two sisters; and five brothers.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Philip Neri Catholic Church or the charity of your choice.

Esther Brandner
WISHEK -- Esther Brandner, 81, Wishek, died April 10, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Wishek, with the Rev. Richard Spiedel officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Pallbearers for the service will be Donald Herr, Chad Benson, Curtis Brandner, Rubin Brandner, Thomas Brandner Jr., Donovan Brandner, Brad Brandner Jr. and Mitch Benson. LaVerna Kaseman will serve as organist, with special music provided by Edna Dockter and Edgar Thurn.

Esther was born June 26, 1916, on the family farm near Zeeland, the daughter of August L. and Maria (Meidinger) Rudolf. Esther grew up on the family farm and received her elementary education in rural McIntosh County schools. She was confirmed at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in 1930. Esther continued to live at home and help on the family farm, doing cooking for her aunts and relatives in the fall at harvest time. On Nov. 5, 1944, Esther was married to Constant Brandner. They lived and farmed in the Zeeland area until retiring in 1975. That same year they moved to Wishek where Esther has lived since.

She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran church, Hannah Circle, Wishek Legion Auxiliary and Country Homemakers. Esther's hobbies included crocheting, embroidering, cooking, and she loved to garden and take care of her flowers. The most important part of Esther's life was her family and the love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Bonita and Dwight Herr, Jamestown; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Deb, Wishek, Thomas and Betty, Heber City, Utah, and Bradley and Sheryl, Wishek; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Alvin, Helmuth and Priscilla, and Paul and Stella, all of Wishek; and five sisters and one brother-in-law, Erna Rath, Alma Dorr and Lorrene Hochhalter, all of Wishek, LuElla Vilhauer, Vancouver, Wash., and Mabel and Richard Justice, Alexandria, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Constant, in 1975, and her parents.

Ora May Eggert
DICKINSON -- Ora May Eggert, 86, Dickinson, formerly of Hebron, died April 11, 1998, in the Dickinson hospital. Arrangements are pending at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron.

Walter Brew
DICKINSON -- Walter Brew, 84, Dickinson, died April 11, 1998, in the Dickinson hospital. Arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

John Becker
WILDROSE -- John Becker, 85, Wildrose, died April 11, 1998, in the Williston nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Sidney Ambers
MINOT -- Sidney Ambers, 70, Minot, died April 10, 1998, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Viking Lutheran Church, Maddock. Further arrangements are pending at Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock.

Nels Fosen
LEEDS -- Nels S. Fosen, 89, Leeds, died April 9, 1998, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at North Prairie Lutheran Church, Leeds, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel; and one daughter, Judy Baer, Cando. (Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds)

Donald Maier
ZAP -- Donald L. Maier, 66, Zap, died April 11, 1998, in the Hazen hospital. Arrangements are pending at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

Genevieve Tobias
BEACH -- Genevieve Tobias, 95, Beach, a pioneer resident of Golden Valley County, died April 11, 1998, in the Wibaux, Mont., nursing home. Services will be 10-30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Beach, with the Rev. David Mormon officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A rosary and vigil will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Beach.

Genevieve Lucille Roof was born Dec. 11, 1902, in Norwalk, Wis., the only child of Adney and Mathilda (Schaitel) Roof.

After operating a general store for several years in Norwalk, her father heard about the land available for homesteading in western North Dakota.

In 1906 he sold his stock in the store and filed on 160 acres of land in Golden Valley County, 12 miles north of Beach.

After building a dwelling he returned to Wisconsin, rented an emigrant car from the railroad and loaded it with horses, cows, chickens, furniture and equipment needed on a farm.

He returned to North Dakota with the car while Genevieve and her mother came by passenger train. Each winter Genevieve and her mother returned to Norwalk to look after property there and Genevieve attended school.

When she was nine years old they remained in North Dakota and Genevieve attended the Bonnie View School which was located on Highway 16, about 12 miles north of Beach. She graduated from Beach High School in 1920 and then taught for three years in country schools in the county.

In 1923 she married Leo Tobias and they lived in Golva where Leo was a grain buyer for the Occident elevator. In 1935 they moved to Beach, where Leo managed the Occident Elevator.

Genevieve was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and St. Anne's Guild, the Beach Garden Study Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed her home and garden, where she grew beautiful flowers and was skilled in making floral arrangements.

She delighted in her grandchildren and spent many hours entertaining them. Genevieve lived at the Wibaux County Nursing Home for the past year. Prior to that she lived six years at Golden Valley Manor in Beach.

She is survived by her daughter, Jeanette Kukowski, Oklahoma City; four grandchildren and their spouses, Jennifer (Randall) Ruiter, Tucson, Ariz., Anne Stolz and Tom Nolz, St. Paul, Minn., John Kukowski and Julie Stolz, Missoula, Mont., and Teresa and James Aberle, Oklahoma City; and three great-grandchildren, Jessa and Megan Ruiter and Alexandra Aberle.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Louie Heidt
SOUTH HEART -- Louie J. Heidt, 59, South Heart, died April 10, 1998, of heart failure. Services will be 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at Hillside Baptist Church, Dickinson, with burial in Belfield Lutheran Cemetery.

He is survived by one son, David, Burnsville, Minn.; four daughters, Virginia Heidt, Maxine Svihl and Brenda Staggs, all of Dickinson, and Sheila Udom, Aurora, Colo.; two brothers, Rudy and Christ, both of Dickinson; and three sisters, Rosemary Heidt, Eleanor Sand and Helen Sand, all of Dickinson. Mark Ilse
Mark Ilse, 44, Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Bismarck, died April 7, 1998, at his home. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sioux Falls.

He is survived by two daughters, Amanda Ilse and Elizabeth Ilse, both of Sioux Falls; three brothers, Greg, Marinette, Wis., Terry, Minneapolis, and Steve, Bismarck; two sisters, Peggy Stromgren, Menominee, Mich., and Lisa Ilse, Austin, Texas; and his mother, Elizabeth Fischer, Bismarck. Nicholas Wirtzfeld
BEACH -- Nicholas Wirtzfeld, 87, Beach, died April 11, 1998, in the Wibaux, Mont., nursing home. Services will be 2 p.m. MDT Tuesday at Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Beach, with burial in St. Michael's Cemetery, Sentinel Butte.

He is survived by his wife, Millie; one brother, Peter, Northfield, Minn.; and two sisters, Catherine Allen, Beach, and Christine Fugere, Woodburn, Ore.

Walter Brew
DICKINSON -- Walter Brew, 84, Dickinson, died April 11, 1998, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson, with burial in Dickinson Cemetery.

He is survived by four sons, Wilbur, Raymond and Arnie, all of Dickinson, and Kenneth, Billings, Mont.; and one daughter, Cynthia Romanyshyn, Fairfield.

HEBRON -- Ora Eggert, 86, Dickinson, formerly of Hebron, died April 11, 1998, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. MDT Thursday at St. John United Church of Christ, Hebron. Further arrangements are pending at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron.

Magdalena Schmidt
