Howard Knudsvig
BUXTON -- Howard J. Knudsvig, 80, Buxton, died April 16, 1998, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Buxton, with the Rev. Douglas Norquist officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Howard J. Knudsvig, the son of Henry and Karina (Jermeland) Knudsvig was born on Dec. 11, 1917, in Buxton. He grew up and attended school in Buxton, graduating from Buxton High School. He attended NDSU in Fargo and graduated in 1938 from the University of Minnesota, with a bachelor's degree in mortuary science. He returned to Buxton, and operated Knudsvig Our Own Hardware and along with his brother, Adrian, they operated Knudsvig Funeral Home. On March 22, 1946, Howard married Amy Langen in Audobon, Minn. He ran the funeral home until 1979, and retired from the hardware store in November 1986.

He was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Buxton Fire Department, North Dakota Retail Hardware Association, N.D. Funeral Directors Association. He was city treasurer of Buxton and assistant Scout master for many years. He was on the church council and Buxton Approvement Association. He was a member of Buxton Civic Club and sexton of the Immanuel Cemeteries for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Amy; one son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Renae, Grand Forks; two daughters and one son-in-law, Rebecca Brooks, Buxton, and Loretta and David Upgren, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Lea, Kirsten and Aaron Knudsvig; and James, Charles and Daniel Upgren; and one brother and sister-in-law, Adrian and Marion, Buxton.

He was preceded in death by his parents. (Baker Funeral Home, Mayville)

Sophie Ewine
WILTON -- Sophie M. Ewine, 84, Wilton, died April 16, 1998, at her granddaughters home in Bismarck. She had been in ill health for the past five weeks. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Wilton, with the Rev. Theodore F. Gustin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, rural Wilton.

Visitation will be from noon-6 p.m. Sunday, at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, and after 7 p.m. at the church.

Sophie Marcella Waltos was born on May 16, 1913, in Hoff, to John and Amelia (Goletz) Waltos. She moved with her parents to a farm east of Baldwin, where she grew up. She married Jack Ewine and they lived and farmed eight miles north of Wilton. He died on Jan. 12, 1975. She moved into Wilton in the fall of 1975, where she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of Catholic Daughters.

Sophie was an active member of Wilton Senior Citizens. She was a well-loved member of the community and enjoyed playing cards, cooking and gardening. She especially loved and enjoyed her family and her grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Ewine, Wilton, and Audrey Sims, Driscoll; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Dennis and Claudia, Wilton, and John, Bismarck; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Alex and Ida Waltos, Portland, Ore., and Ray and Marie Waltos, Yuma, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack; one daughter-in-law; three sisters and one brother.

The family prefers memorials to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Wilton. (Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn)

Adam Boehm
Adam M. Boehm, 82, Olympia, Wash., formerly of Mandan, died April 1, 1998. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today, at Sacred Heart Church, Lacy, Wash.

Adam was born on July 1, 1915, to George Adam and Isabella (Kastner) Boehm in Mandan. He attended St. Joseph's School and Mandan High School. He married Louisa Fried on Nov. 7, 1951. They lived in Washington State.

He is survived by his wife, Louisa; his stepchildren, Anita Cyr, Dennis Fried and Gayle Boehm; one sister, Eva Karls, Mandan; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; great and great-great-nieces and nephews; and one special great-nephew, Ray Eisenmann, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and one sister.

Anton Martin
GLADSTONE -- Anton Martin, 70, Gladstone, died April 16, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Gladstone. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Elvira; two daughters, Desiree Havelka, Dickinson, and Rondee Hanna, Watford City; one son, Guy, Dickinson; and nine sisters, Marian Bleth and Veronica Dassinger, both of Gladstone, Eva Focht, Taylor, Josephine Rust, Huntsville, Texas, Evelyn Sickler and Delores Lefor, both of Dickinson, Marleen Moore, Worland, Wyo., Elaine Burns, Yakima, Wash., and Joyce Kostelecky, Bothell, Wash. Martha Finck
REEDER -- Martha Finck, 93, Reeder, died April 17, 1998, in the Hettinger nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Reeder Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial will be in United Brethren Church Cemetery, south of Reeder.

She is survived by two sons, Leo, Reeder, and LeRoy, Bowman; one daughter, Rebecca McLaughlin, Bowman; one brother; and three sisters, including Mydia Maychzark, Bowman.

Lewis Helland
WILLISTON -- Lewis Helland, 90, Williston, died April 15, 1998. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, at Bethel Lutheran Home, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

He is survived by three daughters, Coral Whisenand, Palm Springs, Calif., Sharon Jones, Waverly, Minn., and Noreen Schroeder, Independence, Mo.; and two brothers, Freeman and Victor, both of Culbertson, Mont. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Cornelia Olson
NEW ROCKFORD -- Cornelia Olson, 86, New Rockford, died April 16, 1998, in a New Rockford nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Bowdon Lutheran Church. Further arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden.

George Zent
George A. Zent, 85, 1113 W. Avenue B, Bismarck, died April 17, 1998, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, with full military rites provided by American Legion Spetz Post No. 1.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Sunday, at Perry Funeral Home, and for one hour before services at the church on Monday. A parish rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

George was born on June 11, 1912, in Mandan to Christ and Mary (Staudinger) Zent. He was raised and educated in Mandan. He married Catherine Griffin on Dec. 27, 1941, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck. In the spring of 1942, he entered the U.S. Army's 81st Infantry Division and served during World War II, being discharged in 1944. He then worked for Mandan Beverage and Sweetheart Bakery for a short time. He joined the Bismarck Police Force in July 1946, working his way from the parking meters up to the rank of captain. He spent most of his time policing on the streets. He especially liked the youth of Bismarck and policed many basketball and football games. He retired in July 1972.

George was a member of Elks, American Legion Post No. 1, Eagles, Moose and the North Dakota Peace Officers Association.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and George Fewel, Seattle, Wash.; two grandchildren, Laurel and Mark; and one brother, Matt Zent, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Patrick George; and three brothers, John, Jack and Frank. (Perry Funeral Home, Bismarck)

Evalena Detmann
NEW SALEM -- Evalena Dettmann, 90, New Salem, died March 29, 1998, in a Fargo nursing home. Services will be 10-30 a.m. MST Thursday at Peace Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Richard Herb officiating. Burial will be in Peace Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. MST today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem, where a service of remembrance will be said at 6:30 MST tonight at the funeral home. Visitation will resume for one hour prior to services at the church.

Evalena was born on April 30, 1907, on the family homestead south of Judson, the daughter of William and Minnie (Starck) Toepke.

She grew up on the family farm, the oldest of seven children and was educated at Spring Valley School, two miles east of the farm.

At the age of 17, she moved to Judson, where she was employed at the Wendt Mercantile Store, where she worked for nine years. On Oct. 25, 1933, Evalena and John Dettmann were married at her parents home south of Judson.

After their marriage, they moved to the John Dettmann farm southwest of Judson, which they operated for 32 years. In 1965, because of Edwin's declining health, they moved to New Salem.

Evalena nursed and cared for Edwin until his death on Dec. 22, 1976. Later, Evalena sold her home and moved to the LaMar Apartments. In August of 1997, she moved to Fargo to be nearer her children and closer to the medical attention she needed.

Evalina lived in an assisted living apartment until Feb. 13, 1998, when she entered the Bethany Nursing Home, where she died.

Evalena was known for her fine sewing abilities and especially for her many tatted doilies and Christmas ornaments. She was the Charter Leader of the Judson 4-H Club and continued as a leader for 25 years, where she taught many a young girl the art of sewing.

She also spent many hours as a volunteer at Elm Crest Manor. After she could no longer do volunteer work, she would spend many hours visiting with the residents.

She was a lifelong member of Evangelical and Reformed Church (United Church of Christ) in Judson and later in New Salem, where she was a member of the choir for many years.

She is survived by her two sons and three daughters-in-law, Willis and Karon, Central City, Iowa, Darrell and Linda, Fargo, and Norma Dettmann, St. Cloud, Minn.; one daughter, Darlene Lapthorn, Fargo; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Michelle and David Dettmann, St. Cloud, James Dettmann, Central City, Deborah and Robert Beckham, Water Valley, Ky., Sandra and David Aird, Reno, Nev., Edwin and Mary Lapthorn, Manhattan, Kan., Michael Lapthorn, Brooklyn, N.Y., Susanne and Robert Seifert, Bennett, Colo., and Theodore Dettmann, Hawthorne, Calif.; and three great-grandchildren, Jenna Seifert, Breanna Beckham and David Lapthorn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edwin; four brothers, Floyd, Earl, Elmer and Theodore; one sister, Myrtle; her oldest son, Dale, who died in 1990, and her second oldest son, Sheldon, who died in 1995. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Rhoda Pilgrim
Rhoda Jane Pilgrim, 91, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck, died March 29, 1998, in a local care center. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, with Bishop Douglas Bahr officiating. Burial will be in the spring at the Lansford Cemetery.

Visitation is ongoing at the funeral home.

She was born Oct. 2, 1906, near Glenburn, Ward County, the daughter of William and Margaret Elizabeth (Furman) Hunter. She attended school in Renville Township. Rhoda married Ray Pilgrim on Oct. 15, 1935, in Bottineau.

They farmed in the Lansford area until 1955, when they moved to Minot. After her husband's death on Dec. 26, 1970, she moved to Bismarck to live with her daughter and family until 1977, when she moved to the Crescent Manor.

In 1989 she suffered a second stroke and entered Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center.

Rhoda was a member of North Dakota Association for the Blind and The Handicapped Association. She was a Methodist church member and a member of the Renville Homemakers Club for more than 30 years.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Orlin Jacobson, Bismarck; four grandchildren and their families, Barry and Tess Jacobson, Brandi, Colt, Shannon and Ethan, and Terry and Laureen Jacobson, Heather and Justin, Stephanie and Terry Sauers, Chance and Chelsie, and Kim and Cheryl Jacobson, Austin and Miranda; and three sisters, Goldie Stene, Mohall, and Margaret Kirkpatrick and Jessica Hunter, both of California.

Rhoda was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; her parents; three brothers, Eddie, Ambrose and Billie; and two sisters, Edna and Hazel. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)

Cari Cameron
Cari Renee Cameron, 27, Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of Bismarck, died March 29, 1998. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, with the Rev. Thomas Richter officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. today, at Bismarck Funeral Home, where a vigil prayer service will be said at 8:30 tonight at the funeral home. Visitation will resume for one hour prior to services at the church.

Cari was born in Helena, Mont., on Sept. 11, 1970, the daughter of Michael and Cheryl (Hare) Cameron. She graduated from Billings Skyview High School in 1989 and from the University of North Dakota in 1994.

She was a teacher's aide at Century High School after graduating from UND. She also was a substitute teacher in the Bismarck school system.

In the summer of 1997, she moved to Winston-Salem and accepted a teaching position at Greenhill School.

She is survived by her parents, Mike and Cheryl; one sister, Amy; her grandparents, Walter and Eunice Cameron, Billings, Mont.; her grandmother, Viola Hare, Billings, Mont.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Edwin Huber
Edwin Raymond Huber, 71, Thousand Oaks, Calif., formerly of Mandan, died March 25, 1998, in Thousand Oaks. Services were held March 30, 1998, at Ascension Lutheran Church. Burial was in Conejo Mountain Memorial Park, Camarillo, Calif.

Edwin was born on March 16, 1927, in Mandan. He has been a resident of Thousand Oaks for 27 years. He was a purchasing agent for Hi-Temp Insulation in Camarillo, Calif.

He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, American Legion, and several golf associations. His hobbies were his grandchildren, his family, golf and assorted sports.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; one daughter and son-in-law, Shelley and David Wright, Newbury Park, Calif.; one son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Julie, Houston, Texas; one grandson, Matthew Wright, Newbury Park; one granddaughter, Kelly Huber, Houston; two brothers, Vern and Duane Huber; three sisters, Lorraine Kilen, Donna Joersz and Marlene Kindel; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Judith Opgrand
Judith B. Opgrand, Bismarck, died March 28, 1998, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in Halstad Cemetery, Halstad, Minn.

Judith was born in Halstad, Minn., the daughter of Arnt and Emma (Larson) Opgrand. She was raised and educated in Minnesota.

Judith attended Mayville State Teachers College and Moorhead State College. She received her teaching certificate from Mayville State Teachers College.

After a few years of teaching, she went into business with her sister, Evelyn. They owned and operated "Opgrand's Ladies Specialty Shop." They sold the business in 1981 after 30 years of business.

Judith enjoyed doing art work. She was a member of the Bismarck-Mandan Art Association.

Judith is survived by two sisters, Evelyn Opgrand, Bismarck, and Mrs. Beatrice Wick, Laguna Hills, Calif.; one brother, Milburn Opgrand, Moorhead, Minn.; two nephews, Paul Wick, Phoenix, Ariz., and Peter Wick and his wife, Carolyn, Corona, Calif.; two great-nieces; and two great-nephews. Katie Zimmerman
NAPOLEON -- Katie Schopp Zimmerman, 90, Napoleon, died March 30, 1998, in the Wishek hospital. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church, Streeter. Burial will be in Streeter Cemetery.

She is survived by one son, Lloyd Schopp and one daughter Doris Dockter, both of Streeter; and five sisters, Bertha Stelzer, Brooklyn Park, Minn., Helen Remboldt and Hilda Darrow, both of Sacramento, Emma Wentz, Kennewick, Wash., and Ruth Wells, Bend Ore. (Haut Funeral Home, Gackle)

Ferd Sundberg
NEW ROCKFORD -- Ferd Sundberg, 94, New Rockford, died March 29, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, New Rockford. Burial will be in Prairie Home Cemetery, New Rockford.

He is survived by his wife, Margit; three sons, Gary, Harvey, Bob, Minot, and Paul, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two daughters, Shirley Finley, Grand Forks, and Julie Korker, Port St. Lucie, Fla. (Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford)

Steve Klem
BELFIELD -- Steve Klem, 88, Belfield, died March 30, 1998, at his home. Services will be 10 a.m. MST Thursday at St. John's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Belfield. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by two daughters, Diana Mayher, Medora, and Margie Barta, Rollings, Wyo.; two sons, Ernest and Alvin, both of Belfield; and three sisters, Rose, Ann and Polly. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

Jack Gifford
MOTT -- Jack Gifford, 61, Mott, died March 29, 1998. Services will be 10:30 a.m. MST Thursday at St. Vincent's Catholic Church, Mott. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Janice; two daughters, Marca R. Gifford, Richfield, Minn., and Jodi Olson, Mott; and two sisters, Lois Burwick, Mott, and Norma Kuebler, Mobridge, S.D. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott)
