After graduating from high school at Grand Rapids, he was inducted into the U.S. Army in May 1943, and took his basic training at Fort Warren, Wyo. Before going overseas in February 1944, he was stationed at Camp Claibourne, La. He was attached to the 189th Reinforcement Co., 69th Battalion, which landed in Normandy on D plus One Day of World War II, after training in England. He served in the battles of Campagne, Northern France and Ardennes' Battle of the Bulge. Besides the Good Conduct medal, he was awarded the American Theater Service Ribbon and Europe-Africa-Middle East Service Ribbon. Philip was discharged Nov. 14, 1945.
