Ella Kautzman
Ella Kautzman, 85, Bismarck, formerly of Pick City and Center, died June 8, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck, with burial in Center Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Wednesday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the chapel one hour before services.

Ella was born Dec. 18, 1911, near Hazen, the daughter of David and Rosa (Birkholz) Baisch. She was raised and educated in the area and married Otto Kautzman, Oct. 8, 1929, at Rosebud. They farmed southeast of Center until 1950 when they made their home west of Pick City. In 1971 they moved into Pick City where they operated a service station until the time of Otto's death on Aug. 31, 1974. Ella moved to Center in 1976, to Bismarck in 1994, and became a resident of Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in May 1995.

An active and independent lady with a gentle disposition, she was never known to say a harsh word about anyone and was always willing to lend a helping hand to others. She loved to garden and could often be seen tending to her vegetables and flowers. Ella loved to travel, especially with her special friend, Louise Pfliger, of Center. She was noted for the wild grape and chokecherry jellies she made, and also for her sauerkraut. Ella was a member of Center Golden Age Club and St. Martin's Altar Society for many years.

She is survived by two daughters, Rita Daugherty, Hazen, and Monica DeBoer, Elko, Nev.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Danny, and his special friend, Millie, Omaha, Ray and Jean, Center, and Kenneth and Tomadean, Mesa, Ariz.; 23 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Barnhardt, Seattle; and two step-sisters, Sister Mary Leo Bleth, Bismarck, and Helen Price, Dinuba, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otto; one son, Harry; two daughters, Adaline Hermann and Luella Kautzman; one grandson, Tracy Kautzman; one sister; and two brothers.

Wayne Hagen
WILLISTON -- Wayne Hagen, 65, Williston, died June 7, 1997, in a Glendive, Mont. hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Everson Memorial Chapel, Williston. Further arrangements are pending.

Emma Uttke
Emma Uttke, 88, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, died June 21, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Carl Lindemann officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Emma Friesz was born March 4, 1909, the daughter of John and Margaret (Weigum) Friesz. She was born north of New Leipzig, where she was raised and educated. Emma was baptized and confirmed at Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, north of New Leipzig. On Nov. 20, 1927, she married Rudolph Uttke at the same church. Emma and Rudolph raised their family and farmed in Grant County until 1960, when they retired and moved to Bismarck. Emma had been a resident of Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center since September 1994.

She is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Ella Adler, Waterloo, N.Y., Bernice Fuchs, and Lucille and Charles Bender, all of Bismarck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Charlotte, Bismarck, and Victor and Ethelyn, Spearfish, S.D.; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Hertha Pastian, Missoula, Mont.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph, in June 1989; two brothers, Edward and Bill; two sisters, Ida Bauer and Helen Sandau; and two sons-in-law, Walter Adler and Clayton Fuchs.

Bernice Garen
Bernice Garen, 68, 4208 Memorial Highway, Mandan, died June 21, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Richard Hagestuen officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Bernice was born April 4, 1929, in Bismarck, to Alex Nelson and Helena Schultz. She grew up on the family farm north of Mandan and attended rural schools. She married Melvin Garen, July 8, 1950, in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mandan. They farmed and raised a family in the Oliver and Morton county areas until 1968 when they moved to Mandan. Melvin died in 1972. Bernice began working at Bismarck Elks in 1968. She worked her way up to head cook. She was very dedicated to her job. She retired in 1995 and took on the job of babysitting her grandson, Tanner. She enjoyed reading and listening to country music. She also enjoyed cooking for her friends and family.

She is survived by three sons and one daughter-in-law, Dave and Carol, Bismarck, Tom, Center, and Paul, Fargo; two grandchildren, Tanner Garen and Tyler Hanson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Melvin Jr.

Emerson Leeds
WASHBURN -- Emerson L. Leeds, 82, Jefferson City, Mo., died June 20, 1997, in a Jefferson City hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, Washburn, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn.

He is survived by two daughters, Linda Willmon, Holyoke, Colo., and Vicky Peters, Missoula, Mont.; one son, Milton, Jefferson City; and two sisters, Ruby Leeds, Pittsfield, Ill., and Flossie Davis, Quincy, Ill. (Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn)

Steven Toepke
Steven Toepke, 27, Winona, Minn., died June 20, 1997, in Hyder, Alaska, in a drowning accident. Arrangements are pending at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

William Breuer
William H. Breuer, 87, Mandan, died June 22, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Arrangements are pending at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home.

Alpha Halvorson
DEVILS LAKE -- Alpha L. Halvorson, 79, Devils Lake, died June 19, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake, with burial in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Esmond.

She is survived by two daughters, Faye Rolfson, Bismarck, and Connie Robideau, Dickinson. (Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake)

Stanley Rafferty
NEW ENGLAND -- Stanley R. Rafferty, 90, New England, died April 15, 1999, in a Dickinson health center. Services will be held at 1-30 p.m. MDT Monday, at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, New England, with the Revs. Jerry Erickson and Donna Dohrmann officiating. Burial will be in New England Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today, at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, at the funeral home, and one hour prior to services, at the church.

Stanley Robert Rafferty was born Oct. 14, 1908, on a ranch in Tepee Butte Township, southeast of New England, to Charles L. and Edna (Griswold) Rafferty. He attended school in Havelock, N.D., and graduated from New England High School. As a young man, he traveled and worked at various jobs throughout the west coast and Alaska.

Stanley married Alice Olson on Sept. 19, 1939. They lived and farmed in Havelock where they raised eight children. In 1971, Stan retired from farming. Stan and Alice then enjoyed traveling and camping throughout the United States and Canada. They continued to reside in Havelock until 1995, when they moved to New England.

He was a member of First Congregational Church, Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, El Zagal Shriners and Rangers Motorcycle Group, Scottish Rite, N.D. Farmer's Union and Senior Citizens. He served on various cooperative, township, church and school boards throughout his life. He enjoyed hunting, golfing, bowling, camping, arrowhead hunting and collecting antiques.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Patricia Rafferty, Cotopaxi, Colo., and Nancy and George Graff and Carrie and Brad Skaare, all of Windsor, Colo.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Verne and Sharon, Anchorage, Alaska, Bill and Karen, and Lee and Cheryl, all of Watford City, and Murry and Pam, Paynesville, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Della Gellett, Dickinson; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dwight and Marilyn, Devils Lake, and Jack and Lorraine, New England; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; one brother; one son; and one grandson.

Alexander Gronbeck
Alexander Bjorn Gronbeck, infant son of Bjorn and Shelley Gronbeck, died April 15, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Edwin Wehner officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.

He was born Jan. 23, 1999, in Bismarck, the son of Bjorn and Shelley (Mees) Gronbeck.

Alexander came to us as a blessing from God. His big blue eyes were always looking for something new to see and learn. He shared the biggest smile with those he loved. Alexander enjoyed being sung to by his mother and being snuggled in a blanket by his grandma. He loved watching his dog play, blowing bubbles and taking baths.

Alexander was loved by those who knew him and enjoyed being held by everyone, especially his father and grandpa. Alexander leaves us as our little angel who will be missed greatly by all who knew him.

He is survived by his parents, Bjorn and Shelley; grandparents, Clara and LaDarana "Whitey" Mees, Bismarck, Juliann and Roy Becker and great-grandmother, Agnes Gronbeck, all of Oakes; his dog, Muffy; aunts and uncles, Darany and Helen Mees, and Terry and Gail Mees, all of Bismarck, Robert and Dona Becker, Powell, Wyo., and Ruth and Truman Rhead Jr., Canton, S.D.; godparents, Corrine and Sanferd Mees, Bismarck; and many cousins.

Raymond McAlpin
Raymond J. "Turk" McAlpin, 80, Ventura, Calif., died April 8, 1999, in a Ventura hospital of heart complications.

Mr. McAlpin was born July 14, 1918, raised in Des Plaines, Ill., and attended Coe College where he met his wife of 57 years, Barbara. During his attendance at Coe College, he was the editor of the school annual and newspaper. Mr. McAlpin was president of Scabbard and Blade, and also president of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. Mr. McAlpin served as a cryptographic officer in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, and was stationed in Florida and Alaska, retiring as a major.

Following the war, he was in management and ownership positions in the retail clothing industry until becoming the administrator of the Missouri Valley Clinic in Bismarck. He was past president of the Bismarck Chamber of Commerce, and a life member of the Medical Group Management Association. The family moved to Ventura in 1966, where he managed the Buenaventura Medical Clinic until his retirement in 1984. Mr. McAlpin and his wife traveled extensively and lived in their Lake Tahoe cabin for many summers. Mr. McAlpin was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Al Malaikah Shrine, Los Angeles Temple.

Mr. McAlpin was honored with the "Legion of Honor" award by the Order of DeMolay and was a charter member of the Ventura Exchange Club.

Mr. McAlpin is survived by his wife, Barbara; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Margie, Novato, Calif., and Brian and Renee, Champagne, Ill.; one brother, Wayne, Virginia; his grandchildren, Craig and his wife, Natalie McAlpin, Sarah and her husband, Nathan Lasiter, Stephen McAlpin, Megan McAlpin and Michelle McAlpin; and his great-grandson, Paul.

Mr. McAlpin was preceded in death by his grandson, Paul, in 1981.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at New Song Community Church, 3200 N. 11th St., Bismarck, with the Rev. Larry Jahnke officiating.

Leontina Hintz
NEW LEIPZIG -- Leontina "Tina" Hintz, 90, New Leipzig, died April 15, 1999, at her home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. MDT Tuesday, at Christus Congregational United Church of Christ, New Leipzig. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She is survived by three sons, Wilbur and Delbert, both of Lemmon, S.D., and Murlin, Joplin, Mo.; three daughters, Fern Achtenberg, Brinnon, Wash., Claudine Garris, Quilcene, Wash., and Marjorie Baesler, Chehalis, Wash.; and four brothers, six sisters, and one half-sister. Albert Koch
Albert V. Koch, 66, Mandan, died April 16, 1999, in a Sioux Falls, S.D., hospital. Services will be held at noon Tuesday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home.

He is survived by two sons, Kevin and Kenneth, both of Bismarck; three daughters and one son-in-law, Linda and John Conlon, Richardton, Caroline Koch, Bismarck, and Julie Koch, Jamestown; four grandchildren, Travis and Casey Martin and Julie's daughters, LeAnn and Christie; his mother, Magdalena Koch, Mandan; one brother, Edward, Cheyenne, Wyo.; and one sister and brother-in-law, Adaline and Frank Messer, Mandan.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Irene Friesz
Irene C. Friesz, 79, Mandan, died April 17, 1999, in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Monday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m.

Irene Friesz was born Feb. 2, 1920, in Flasher, N.D., the daughter of Heronimus S. and Katherine (Braxmeier) Friesz. When she was two, her family moved to Mandan where she was raised and educated.

Irene was employed by Red Owl, Bill's Super Valu, and Main Market in Mandan, and Albrecht's Frozen Foods in Bismarck.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bismarck. Irene enjoyed crocheting and craft work.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Ted (Violet) Goos, Washington; her special friend, Robert Albrecht, Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Frank and John E. Friesz; and four sisters, Magdalen Barth, Barbara Zappardino, Rose Beehler and Lillian Aller.

Daniel Cronin
Daniel C. Cronin, 60, Gettysburg, S.D., died April 16, 1999, at his home of cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gettysburg. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Gettysburg.

He is survived by his wife, Janet; five sons, Monty, Mike, Matt and Justin, all of Gettysburg, and Jim, Rexberg, Idaho; one daughter, Susan Meidinger, Zeeland; and one sister, Mary Ann Knudson, Mobridge, S.D. (Kesling Funeral Home, Mobridge)
