STRASBURG -- Mary VanBeek, 96, Strasburg, died April 20, 1999, in the Strasburg nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

Katherine Will
Katherine "Katie" Will, 84, Bismarck, died April 19, 1999, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MDT Friday, at First United Methodist Church, Hebron. Burial will be in Methodist Cemetery, Hebron.

She is survived by six daughters, Lillian Lyng, Madison, Minn., Jeannette Douglas, Ivydale, W.V., Merril Sailer, Hebron, Violet Harris, Elkton, S.D., Marian Kitzan, Bismarck, and Della Block, McIntosh, S.D.; two sons, James Sailer, Fargo, and David Will, Bismarck; two sisters, Rose Wallender, Beulah, and Mary Entzel, Dickinson; and two brothers, Bernhardt Flemmer, Beulah, and Daniel Flemmer, Halliday. (Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron)

Mary Van Beek
Mary Van Beek, 96, Strasburg, died April 20, 1999, in the Strasburg nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at Hope Reformed Church, Westfield. Burial will be in the Westfield Cemetery.

She is survived by four sons, Ernest, Linton, Kenneth, Bismarck, Melvin, Fargo, and Orland, Roseburg, Ore.; six daughters, Violet Haak, Rock Valley, Iowa, Phyllis Haak, Linton, Berniese Wester, Bismarck, Carol Nelson, Linton, Angie Van Beek, St. Cloud, and Elaine Doeden, Williston; one sister, Kathryn LaFave, Montana; and two brothers, Willis Vander Vorste, Mobridge, S.D., and Martin Vander Vorste, Bismarck. Edwin Lee
Edwin R. Lee, 80, died peacefully April 20, 1999, in Tacoma, Wash. He was born April 21, 1918, in Bismarck. He graduated from Bismarck High School in 1937 and served honorably as a veteran of World War II. He married Ella Mae Selby in 1940, and was married for 39 years before she preceded him in death in 1979.

Mr. Lee managed and operated the Texaco gas station, Sudden Service, for 20 years. The station was located on Main Street across from the old Auto Dine hamburger establishment and McDonald's, and where the Holiday Inn's south side parking area is presently situated.

Edwin moved his family to Tacoma, Wash., in 1968. He worked for Shaub Ellison, a tire company in the greater northwest, until he retired.

Edwin was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He is survived by five sons, Gary, Edwin Jr., Duane, Dennis and LeRoy Lee, all from Tacoma, Wash.; and three daughters, Linda Olson, Palo Alto, Calif., Cindy Leach, Spanaway, Wash., and Susan Kuntz, Olympia, Wash.

Grandpa Lee is also survived by 28 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He loved them all and will be dearly missed.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 24, at the United Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the American Diabetes foundations.

Linda Vogel
Linda M. Vogel, 45, died April 20, 1999, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Stephen Saunders officiating. Burial will be in the Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Linda was born Feb. 18, 1954, in Bismarck, the daughter of John F. and Josephine (Schmidt) Vogel. She was employed as a housekeeper at the Colonial Motel and later worked at Arrowhead Cleaners for 15 years.

She is survived by her father, John F., Mandan; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, David J. and Bonita, Marvin J. and Edna, and Douglas J., all of Mandan; one sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Kevin Christensen, Mandan; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Helen Edwards
Helen Saunders Edwards, 89, Overland Park, Kan., died April 21, 1999. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Moriah Freeman Funeral Home, Kansas City, Mo., with burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

Helen was born July 15, 1909, in Mandan, to George D. and Mabel Loveland Saunders. She worked as a journalist for the Mandan Pioneer in North Dakota and the Kansas City Star. She was a member of Sixth Church of Christ, Scientist and was a practitioner. She belonged to the National League of American Pen Women, Kansas City -- Westport Branch, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Robert Saunders; two sisters, Edythe Dietrich and Virginia Capek; a niece, Kathleen Capek; and Forrest Edwards.

She is survived by three nieces, Janice Mayer and her husband, Tom, Bismarck, Shari Turner and her husband, Leslie, and Barbara Wondrasek and her husband, Allen, all of Bottineau; and a nephew, Robert C. and her husband, Lindy, Minot.

The family prefers memorials to Sixth Church of Christ, Scientist, Wornall Road and 66th Terr.

Harold McLain Jr.
STANTON -- Harold Edward "Eddie" McLain Jr., 46, Stanton, died April 21, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Stanton, with the Rev. Marvin Mutzenberger officiating. Burial will be in Stanton Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be David Stanley, Kenny Johnson, Eli Schumann, John Sayler, Joey Neumiller, Bill Upham, Ronald Johnson and Scott Johnson.

Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. Sunday at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.

Ed was born the son of Harold and Olga (Sather) McLain, May 8, 1952, at Bottineau. He was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church, Bottineau. Ed grew up and was educated in Bottineau, where he graduated from high school in 1970. Following graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and served his country until he was honorably discharged on April 25, 1972. After the service, Ed enrolled at Minot State College and later graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in business. On May 2, 1981, Ed was united in marriage to Julie Neumiller in Bismarck. Together, they lived in Minot for a short time and then moved to Williston, where Ed was an assistant manager for KMart. In April 1991, Ed and Julie moved to Stanton where they purchased and operated the Stanton Super Valu until the time of his death. The store was known to everyone as "Ed's Store," and he was referred to as the "Happy Grocer."

Ed was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and church council, the Zap Gun Club, Center Bow Hunters Club, and also a member of the Mercer County Housing Board. He taught hunters safety, Sunday school, was a Boy Scout leader and he also coached hockey. Ed had a quick wit and made up nicknames for everyone he would meet. Ed was an avid hunter and loved bow hunting as well as shooting trap. He started the "Old Man and Kids" fishing derby, that was enjoyed by all, and it didn't matter what kind of fish the kids caught, they all would win a prize. Ed loved to take kids hunting and fishing, and he was also known to be a kid at heart himself and will be missed by all.

Ed is survived by his wife, Julie, Stanton; his mother, Olga McLain, Bottineau; one sister, Aris Peters and her husband, Pete, Vancouver, Wash.; his mother and father-in-law, Donella and Leslie Engstrom, Bismarck; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harold; and one brother.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Old Man and Kids fishing derby.

John Norby
John Keith Norby, 67, Bismarck, died at his home on Tuesday, April 20, 1999.

The Rev. Keith Odney will lead a celebration of his life at the Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1114 Highland Acres Road in Bismarck, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 24th. The service of Christian Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, at United Lutheran Church, 324 Chestnut Street, Grand Forks, with the Rev. Stephen Wold officiating.

Visitation will begin one hour prior to the services at the Church of the Cross. Visitation continues from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday at the Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Monday for one hour prior to the services at United Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Forks.

John was born April 30, 1931, in Fargo, the son of George and Dorothy (Parsons) Norby. He lived in Barnsville, Minn., until 1938, when the family moved to Grand Forks. He graduated from Central High School, Grand Forks, and from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. After graduation, in 1955, he returned to Grand Forks to work in the family department store, Norby's of Grand Forks. He married Barbara Hertsgaard on May 31, 1959, at Kindred. They raised four children in Grand Forks.

John closed the store in 1986 and moved to Bismarck. In 1988, he entered Luther Northwestern Theological Seminary, graduating in 1991. Following a post-graduate internship in Almont, he was ordained at Calvary Lutheran Church April 18, 1993. He was called to the Tuttle-Robinson Parish, where he served until his retirement in 1998.

John is survived by his wife; two sons, George and Gregory (Tammy), all of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Floy Marx, Bismarck, and Lisa (Shawn) Vodden, Grand Forks; five grandchildren, Benjamin and Katherine Norby, Allan Marx Jr., and Jessica and Thomas Vodden; and one brother, George W.P. Norby, Casablanca, Morocco.

He was preceded in death by his parents. (Eastgate Funeral Service)

E.D. Peterson
E.D. Peterson, 70, Shepherd, Mont., died April 22, 1999, in a Billings hospital. He is survived by three sons, Terry and Kerry, both of Billings, and Elwyn, Las Vegas; one daughter, Kim Kruger, Columbus, Mont.; and his sister, Darlene Murray, Las Vegas.

To honor his wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are planned. (Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist, Billings)

Myrtle Solheim
MADDOCK -- Myrtle O. Solheim, 90, Rugby, died April 21, 1999, in the Rugby hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at North Viking Lutheran Church, Maddock, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Carol Ravnaas, Turtle Lake; one sister, Twila Dullum, Williston; and three brothers, Dennis, Portland, Ore., Lloyd, Tacoma, Wash., and Ralph, Milwaukie, Ore. (Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock)

Rose Kollman
CARRINGTON -- Rose Kollman, 83, Carrington, died April 23, 1999, in a Carrington nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Carrington. Further arrangements are pending at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

Dorothy Pracht
Dorothy Pracht, 70, Mandan, died April 23, 1999, in her home. Arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Albert Stegmeier
Albert A. Stegmeier, 88, 800 N. Mandan St., died April 15, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, with the Rev. Edward Huntington officiating.

He was born Sept. 1, 1910, at Glen Ullin, the son of Jacob and Sophie (Pietz) Stegmeier. He attended schools at Heil and the Mission House in Wisconsin. He returned to Heil to farm. Albert married Bertha Steinley, Nov. 29, 1935, at Hazelton. They farmed north of Carson. He was part owner of the International Harvester dealership in Almont. They have resided in Bismarck for the last 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha; one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and John Locken, Bismarck; one grandson, Jason Locken; one great-granddaughter, Cierra Locken; two sisters, Gertrude Ketterling, Heil, and Lillian Seeger, Rochester, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.

Albert was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters.

Dorothy Pracht
Dorothy "Dottie" Pracht, 70, Mandan, died April 23, 1999, at her home. Services will be held at noon Tuesday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday, and 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday, both at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Dorothy Mae Rowell was born on June 11, 1928, at Jamestown, the daughter of Henry and Bertha Frances (Baker) Rowell. She was raised and educated in Jamestown.

Dottie lived in Cloquet, Minn., for about four years where she worked for Diamond Match Company. She married Robert Pracht on July 10, 1950, in Aberdeen, S.D. They lived in Minneapolis from 1951 to 1965. They then moved to Blaine, Minn., where they lived for 25 years. In 1990, they moved to Mandan.

Dottie loved painting, crocheting, watching sporting events, the Price is Right, and Wheel of Fortune with her husband, and doing crossword puzzles.

Dottie was a joy to be around and always had a kind word of everyone. She loved to joke and was a good listener.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; her mother, Bertha (Baker) Rowell, Jamestown; one daughter, Dianna Miller, Ogilvie, Minn.; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Julie Pracht, East Bethel, Minn.; four grandchildren; three sisters and five brothers; and many nieces, nephews and special friends.

Dottie was preceded in death by her father, Henry Rowell; and her sister, Erma Bennett. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Anna Frank
WISHEK -- Anna Frank, 89, Wishek, died April 23, 1999, in the Wishek nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Wishek, with the Rev. Wildred Hanson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today, and 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday, both at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek.

Anna was born on April 9, 1910, in rural Logan County, near Burnstad, the daughter of Martin and Eva (Becker) Gunsch. Anna was baptized into the Lutheran faith at an early age and was confirmed at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Wishek on Palm Sunday, April 5, 1925. Anna grew up on the family farm 14 miles northwest of of Wishek, and received her elementary education in rural Logan County Schools. She continued to live at home until her marriage to Franz Frank on Oct. 9, 1929. Following their marriage, they lived and farmed in the rural Wishek-Burnstad area for many years. In 1955, the couple moved to Wishek where she has lived since that time. She worked in Wishek at the Krein Hotel for a year and then in the produce section at Herr Mercantile for several years, before retiring due to ill health. Anna has resided at the Wishek Nursing Home since March of 1998. Her husband, Franz, died on Nov. 18, 1986.

Anna was a former member of Salem Lutheran Church, rural Wishek, where she served as organist for five years and a Sunday School teacher for four years. Currently, she was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church of Wishek, where she was active in the Ladies Aid, and sang with the church choir and women's chorus for 16 years. Anna was a gentle and loving person who believed and lived her strong spiritual faith by example.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Elmer and Mary Ann, Auburn, Calif.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Arlys and Clem Fowler, Bismarck, Shirley and Lloyd Weisenburger, Lester Prairie, Minn., and Eunice and Norbert Kaman, Eckert, Colo.; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Franz; her parents; and five brothers and four sisters. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek)

Gordon Dalbol
Gordon T. Dalbol, 69, Moorhead, Minn., and formerly of Tuttle, died April 23, 1999, in a Moorhead nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Lutheran Church of Christ the King, Moorhead. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Moorhead.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene; two sons, Gordon and Zane, both of Fargo; two daughters, Deborah Ann Halvorson, Dilworth, Minn., and Denise Picotte, Moorhead; five brothers, Nels, Moorhead, Harold, Hazen, Robert, Fargo, Edward, Trukee, Calif., and John, Mapleton; and four sisters, Luella Rawson, Detroit Lakes, Minn., Elsie DeKrey, Colton, S.D., Ruby Nelson, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Edna Baker, Culver City, Calif. Susie Leno
Susie Leno, 55, Moorhead, Minn., and formerly of Bismarck, died April 23, 1999, of complications from Lou Gehrig's Disease. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Lutheran Church of Christ the King, Moorhead. Burial will be in Tuttle Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis; her mother, Evelyn Sathre, Tuttle; two sons, Darren and Devin, both of Fargo; one daughter, Dana Heidelberger, Berryville, Va.; one brother, Hal Sathre, Tuttle; and four sisters, Margot Manley, Forbestown, Calif., Sharol Felch, Tuttle, Helen Hetletved, Grand Forks, and Lonna Meier, Bismarck.
