Helen Thompson, 87, Mandan, died April 24, 1999, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at First Lutheran Church, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending with Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Allen Sayler, 58, Herreid, S.D., died April 22, 1999, in an Aberdeen, S.D., hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Herreid Reformed Church. Further arrangements are pending with Kesling Funeral Home, Mobridge.

WILLISTON -- Loren Fender, 69, Williston, died April 23, 1999, in Billings, Mont. Arrangements are pending with Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Clere Wiese
Clere Wiese, 90, Bismarck, died April 23, 1999, at his home. Arrangements are pending with Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Vernon Berg
Vernon E. Berg, 63, Bismarck, and formerly of Litchville and West Fargo, died April 23, 1999, in a Rochester, Minn., hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at First Baptist Church, Valley City, with the Rev. Norman Winkelman officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery, Litchville, with military honors provided by V.F.W. Post No. 2764.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Monday, at Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City, and for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Vernon Eugene Berg was born Feb. 24, 1936, in Bottineau, the son of Leonard and Julia (Hust) Berg. He attended school there until moving with his family to Litchville, where he graduated from high school in 1954. He attended Valley City State University after which he served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 and was stationed in France. He returned to Litchville and married Loretta Bratland in 1958. He worked with his father at the Litchville Bulletin newspaper and later purchased it. He later sold the paper and moved to West Fargo. He moved to Bismarck where he worked for the North Dakota National Guard in the Fraine Barracks, where he did their printing. He retired in 1986 due to his health. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and had a lifelong interest in sports.

He was a former member of the Elks Chorus, Bismarck, Army National Guard Band, and a life member of Leslie Newman V.F.W. Post No. 9315.

He is survived by two sons, Bradley and Kim, and their daughter, Mindy, and her son, Noah, Bismarck; Daniel and Holly and their children, Derek and Megan, Bismarck; one daughter, Tracy and John Hulse and children, Torrie and Trevor, Westhope; his stepchildren, Scott Dietrich, Laramie, Wyo.; Michelle Dietrich and her children, Chloe and Tiffany, Moorhead, Minn.; three brothers, Glenn (Carol), Alexandria, Minn., Kenneth, Lodi, Calif., Ronald (Darlene), Phoenix, Ariz.; four sisters, Norma (Robert) Miedema, Litchville, Carol Opdahl, Las Vegas, Nev., Joan (Ronald) Trapp, Marion, and Laura Berg, Phoenix. Dorothy Toepke
NEW SALEM -- Dorothy Toepke, 87, New Salem, died April 24, 1999, in the New Salem nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Clinton Bender
MARTIN -- Clinton Bender, 68, Martin, died April 23, 1999, near Harvey. Services will be held at 10-30 a.m. Tuesday at the Martin Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene; and three sons, Kevin, Goodrich, David, Anamoos, and Brian, Martin. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Myrtle Russell
GRASSY BUTTE -- Myrtle E. Russell, 96, Grassy Butte, died April 24, 1999, in the Killdeer nursing home. Services will be held at 4 p.m. MDT Tuesday at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen. Further arrangements are pending.

Mary Kjos
NEW ROCKFORD -- Mary Kjos, 93, New Rockford, died April 23, 1999, in the New Rockford nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, New Rockford, with burial in Prairie Home Cemetery, New Rockford.

She is survived by two daughters, Loretta Gedrose, New Rockford, and Donna Russell, Tacoma, Wash.; two sons, Dan, Portland, Ore., and Dean, Dickinson; and one sister, Alma Kjeldon, Devils Lake. (Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford)

Dorothy Toepke
NEW SALEM -- Dorothy Toepke, 87, New Salem, died April 24, 1999, in the New Salem nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Tuesday at Salem United Church of Christ, New Salem.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. today at the nursing home in New Salem, and will continue after 3 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour before services. Further arrangements are pending.

Arthur Ost
KULM -- Arther F. Ost, 80, Kulm, died April 24, 1999, in his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Church, Kulm, with burial in Kulm Congregational Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline; two sons, James and Darwin, both of Fredonia; and one daughter, Bernice Johnson, Salem, Ore. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Kulm)

Bertha Graff
TAPPEN -- Bertha Graff, 85, Tappen, died April 24, 1999, in Bismarck. Arrangements are pending at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Nora Mueller
WISHEK -- Nora R. Mueller, 84, Wishek, died April 25, 1999, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wishek United Methodist Church. Further arrangements are pending at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek.

George Torgerson
WILTON -- George B. Torgerson, 68, Wilton, died April 24, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel Evangelical Free Church, Devils Lake, with burial in Devils Lake Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Frances; three daughters, Beth Koch, Washburn, Jean Weber, Beulah, and Janet Schlender, Drake; three sons, Mike, Portland, Ore., Dave, Bismarck, and Dennis, Bismarck; his mother, Clara Torgerson, Wadena, Minn.; and three sisters, Ruthie Ellingson, Minnewaukan, Evelyn Lindberg, Perth, and Eileen Hessling, Wadena. Teddy Medler
SURREY -- Teddy Medler, 67, Surrey, died April 23, 1999, in his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.

He is survived by his wife, Leona; three sons, Terry, Bismarck, Alan, Minot, and Calvin, Granville; one brother, Duane, Mohall; and three sisters, Ida Arneson, Donnelly, Minn., Mercedes Carr, Luck, Wis., and Elaine Feddersen, Omak, Wash. (Thomas Funeral Home, Minot)

Alice Kelly
DICKINSON -- Alice Kelly, 74, Jamestown, died April 24, 1999, in a Jamestown nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Rose Vetter
Rose Vetter, 87, Linton, died April 24, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton, with the Rev. Gade Show Reddy officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, where a rosary will be said at 7:30 tonight.

Rose was born April 17, 1912, on a farm near Hague, the daughter of Frank and Katherina (Miller) Volk. She attended rural school. She married John A. Vetter Sept. 20, 1932, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hague. They farmed 15 miles southwest of Linton.

She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and Christian Mothers. She was a very good baker and loved to crochet. She collected toy tractors and dolls.

She is survived by her husband, John; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Peter, Linton, George and Paulette, and Jim, all of Mandan, and Jerome and Darlene, Bismarck; two daughters and one son-in-law, Delores Jahner, Bismarck, and Rosie Marie and Charles Gefroh, Jamestown; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Pete and Mary, Hague, and Mattie and Maggie, Linton; and one sister, Mary Zahn, Linton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Isabel; one son-in-law; three brothers and one sister.

Clere Wiese
Clere Wiese, 90, Bismarck, died April 24, 1999, in his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be in Baldwin Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Wednesday, and will continue one hour before services, all at the funeral home.

Clere was born May 30, 1908, west of Garrison to Peter and Myra (Wilson) Wiese. He grew up south of Turtle Lake and attended rural schools. In 1929, Clere and his brother Merle, farmed southeast of Baldwin. He married Esther Redmann, Feb. 18, 1940, in Wibaux, Mont. They farmed near Baldwin until 1945 when they moved to Bismarck. He and his brother owned and operated Wiese Motor Co. until 1961, when they sold it. He then worked for the North Dakota Penitentiary. An accomplished rock splitter, he provided the rock that was used to build the Annunciation Priory and Mary College.

Clere loved hunting, fishing and farming, and shot his last deer at the age of 85 years old.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Bruce Keller, Bismarck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ervin and Linda, and Eugene and Kathy, all of Bismarck; one sister, Iona Birkbeck, Baldwin; seven grandchildren, Lisa Schlenker, Bismarck, DeRicci Roberts, Temecula, Calif., Christi Hopfauf, Bismarck, Adam and Sara Wiese, Bismarck, Sasha and Talia Wiese, Bismarck; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Esther, who died in 1982; and two brothers, Merle and Frank.

Helen Thompson
Helen Thompson, 87, Mandan, died April 24, 1999, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Paul D. Fiske officiating. Burial will be in Heart River Cemetery, southwest of Mandan.

Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. There will be no reviewal at the church.

Helen Larson was born Nov. 4, 1911, on the family farm southwest of Mandan, the daughter of Axel and Pauline (Olsen) Larson. A graduate of Mandan High School, Helen married Obert Thompson of Mandan in 1933. They moved to California in 1943, and also lived in Hawaii. Obert died in 1964 and Helen returned to Mandan to live with her son, Jerry, in 1980. She loved to cook and bake for her family.

She is survived by her son, Jerry, Mandan; two granddaughters, Laura and Tammi Thompson, Vallejo, Calif.; and one brother, Gilbert, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers; and one son, Orvin.

Emil Mutzenberger
Emil Mutzenberger was born Nov. 10, 1906, to Matthew and Kathrine (Maier) Mutzenberger, and entered into the fullness of the Kingdom in the Beulah nursing home. He was 92. On Dec. 16, 1928, Emil was married to Ottillie Maier. Together they lived and farmed south of Hazen in Oliver County. They later moved northwest of Stanton to a farm they started themselves, then to Stanton and a final move to Hazen in 1958.

Emil was known in town for plowing many gardens. He also cleaned cemeteries, hauled coal, set up grain bins and fixed many lawn mowers and small engines. He and Tillie worked side by side all their married life of 62 years. In his earlier years, Emil was active in the duties of the rural church he attended.

Emil entered the Hazen retirement home in August 1991, and later had a short stay at the Senior Suites, before he moved to the Knife River Care Center on Sept. 4, 1997. Emil's hobbies included gardening, which he did until he entered the nursing home, fishing and singing. He also loved animals as well as children, and especially the younger children.

He is survived by his daughter, Elois "Lois" Baer, and her husband, Edmer, Hazen; one sister, Edna Wolf, Minot; one brother, Elhardt, Minot; six grandchildren, Loretta, Dallas, Myron, Linda, Wayne and Sheila; 10 great-grandchildren, Joelle, Andrew, Dallas Jason, Barbara, Vicki, Roxanne, Jesse, Garrett, Michaela and Kyle; and one great-great-grandchild, Alesha.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Thursday at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen, with the Rev. Walt Wolff officiating. burial will be in New Peace Lutheran Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Myron Baer, Dallas Baer, Dallas Jason Baer, Roland Daigle, Andrew Daigle, Wayne Weinberger, Dave Weckerle and Don Mutzenberger.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.
