Mary Held
Mary E. Held, 87, 420 E. Main St., Bismarck, died Nov. 25, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Mark Bayert officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. Friday at the church.

Mary was born March 1, 1910, at Brown's Chapel, W.Va., to George T. and Dora (Watson) Duncil. She grew up and was educated in West Virginia. She worked in department stores in West Virginia. She moved to Bismarck in 1972 to be near her daughter's family. She had worked at A.W. Lucas Company, retiring in 1984.

She was a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star and White Shrine.

She is survived by one daughter, Suzie Pearce of Bismarck; one sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Ralph Tomlin of North Carolina; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Duncil of Morgantown, W.Va., and Jean Duncil of Hillsboro, Ill.; two grandchildren, Dave Pierce and his wife Colleen and Tracy and her husband Rocky Metzger of Bismarck and one great-grandson, Ben-Luke Metzger.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and four brothers.

The family prefers memorials to First Presbyterian Church. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

James Palen
James G. Palen, 84, Mandan, died Nov. 26, 1997, in a Mandan nursing home. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending with Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Albert Woehl
ASHLEY -- Albert Woehl, 89, Ashley, died Nov. 27, 1997, in the Ashley nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ashley Baptist Church. Burial will be in Ashley City Cemetery. Further arrangements are pending with Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley.

George Schroeder
HEBRON -- George B. Schroeder, 83, Hebron, died Nov. 29, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Hebron. Further arrangements are pending with Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron.

Vicki Finders
WILLISTON -- Vicki Finders, 54, Williston, died Nov. 28, 1997, at her home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Hope Wesleyan Church, Williston. Further arrangements are pending with Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Alois Stepanek
WILLISTON -- Alois Stepanek, 94, Williston, died Nov. 29, 1997, in the Williston hospital. Arrangements are pending with Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Verna Finch
NEW ENGLAND -- Verna Finch, 82, New England, died Nov. 27, 1997, in a Bowman nursing home. Services are scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, New England. Burial will be in Rainy Butte Cemetery, New England.

She is survived by one son, Bert, St. Paul, Minn., and one brother, Bud R. Shauf, Everett, Wash. (Krebsbach Funeral Home, Bowman)

Clara Rettke
BEULAH -- Clara Rettke, 98, Beulah, died Nov. 29, 1997, in a Beulah nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Seibel Funeral Homes, Beulah.

Darcy Rau
NAPOLEON -- Darcy D. Rau, 39, Napoleon, died Nov. 28, 1997, in Rochester, Minn. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Napoleon. Burial will be in Napoleon City Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; one son, David, at home; one daughter, Danette, at home; one brother, Darryl, Napoleon; and his parents, Walter and Ellena, Napoleon. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon)

Dan Kvanvig
HETTINGER -- Dan A. Kvanvig, 48, Hettinger, died Nov. 26, 1997, in Tioga. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hettinger. Burial will be in Hettinger Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; two daughters, Gretchen Kvanvig, Rapid City, S.D., and Danielle Kvanvig, Hettinger; his mother, Julie Kvanvig, Hettinger; four brothers, Pete, Honolulu, Hawaii, Russell, Twin Falls, Idaho, Dennis, Moorhead, Minn., and Steve, Hettinger; and two sisters, Lynda Backman, Moorhead, Minn., and Amy Mason, Auburn, Wash. Douglas Swanson
Douglas Swanson, 49, Bismarck, died Nov. 26, 1997, in his home. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. David Swonger officiating. Burial will be at noon in Bethany Lutheran Cemetery, Robinson.

He was born Oct. 22, 1948, at Jamestown, the son of Curtis and Delores (Leland) Swanson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Bethany Lutheran Church, Robinson. He was raised in Robinson and attended Robinson High School. Douglas served in the U.S. Navy with the Sea Bees from March 1969 to January 1975. He served a full tour of duty in the Vietnam War. He was a master electrician and owned "Swany's Electric." He was vice president and co-founder of the "W.A.I.T." (Worker Against Inhumane Treatment) organization. He was also a continuing member of the I.B.E.W. (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers).

Douglas loved hunting, fishing and his three Labrador dogs, Blackjack, Jake and Dominick. They were great company during his battle with back problems.

He leaves behind his wife of 28 years, Julie; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Kyle and Tonia, and Daniel Swanson; his mother, Delores Leland; four sisters, Carla Roberts, Marilyn Martin, Ellen Russell and Maria Leland; and one brother, Wallice Swanson. (Boelter Funeral Home)

Esther Munsch
Esther L. Munsch, 90, Bismarck, died Nov. 24, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Church of Christ, Bismarck. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Rueben Hegel
Rueben Hegel, 74, Bismarck, died Nov. 29, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending with Bismarck Funeral Home.

Shirley Sipe
GRASSY BUTTE -- Shirley Sipe, 58, Grassy Butte, died Nov. 28, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MST Monday at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson. Further arrangements pending with Price-Murphy Funeral Home.

Charles Kordonowy
JAMESTOWN -- Charles Kordonowy, 58, Jamestown, died Nov. 28, 1997, in Jamestown. Services will be held at 3 p.m. MST Tuesday at St. John's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Belfield. Further arrangements are pending with Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Delmar Erickson
Delmar Erickson, 68, 704 S. Woodland Drive, Mandan, died Nov. 29, 1997, at his home. Arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Cherub Chalmers
Cherub Chalmers, 85, Lake Worth, Fla., died Nov. 26, 1997, in Lake Worth. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Tuesday at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron, with the Rev. Thomas A. Zuhlke officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Hebron.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Cherub Chalmers was born on Dec. 29, 1911, in Mott, to Joseph and Nellie (Johnson) Chalmers. He was raised and educated in Mott. He married Wilma Birkmaier on June 20, 1937. Following their marriage, they moved to Florida, where he was the chief accountant for the city of Lake Worth. His wife died on Oct. 13, 1990. He entered a Lake Worth nursing home in 1993 where he has resided since.

He was a U.S. staff sergeant from December of 1942 until March of 1946.

He was a member of Shriners Band in Lake Worth.

He is survived by one sister, Cherridahl Brown, Encinitas, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Wilma.

Ernest Wilkinson
WHITE SHIELD -- Ernest Peter Wilkinson, 76, White Shield, died Nov. 28, 1997, in a New Town clinic. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ralph Wells Memorial Complex, White Shield. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery, rural White Shield.

He is survived by five sons, Spencer, New Town, Leonard, Kennewick, Wash., Leonard, Wilbur, Charles and Virgil, all of White Shield; and two daughters, Alva Rose Hall, White Shield, and Virginia Wilkinson, Bismarck. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

Gilbert Gietzen
GLEN ULLIN -- Gilbert John Gietzen, 85, Glen Ullin, died Nov. 28, 1997, in Glen Ullin. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Wednesday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with the Rev. Claude Seeberger officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 4:30 p.m. MST Tuesday at the church, with a prayer service said at 7 p.m., also at the church.

Gilbert J. Gietzen was born on July 12, 1912, to John and Eleanor (Wehri) Gietzen. He was raised and educated in rural Glen Ullin. He worked on the family farm where he trained horses with his brother. He married Anna Sebastian on March 4, 1935, in Haymarsh. Following their marriage, they farmed at Bluegrass, Haymarsh, and settled on a farm north of Glen Ullin, where they were engaged in dairy and grain farming.

He worked as a mechanic for Al's Service, later for Curlew Elevator, and Fitterer Implement. Anna died in October of 1980. He lived on the farm until 1983, when he moved into Glen Ullin. He entered the Marian Manor Nursing Home in April of 1991, where he has resided since.

He was an avid bowler, and loved old time music and to dance.

He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Glen Ullin Saddle Club, Glen Ullin Lions and Sacred Heart Choir.

He is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Joe Reinbold, and Cleone and Duane Hatzenbuehler, all of Hebron, Doreen and Donald Roden, Bismarck, Charlotte and Bob DelaBarre, Glen Ullin; three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Mary Ann, Vancouver, Wash., Curt and Linda, Dickinson, and Charles and Kerry, Glen Ullin; 29 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Caroline Sebastian, Hebron, and Eleanor Wetzel, Almont; and four brothers, Walter and Amos, Glen Ullin, Cyril, Wahpeton, and Ed, Van Nuyes, Calif. (Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin)

Richard Herdelbrink
Richard Herdelbrink, 53, Mandan, died Nov. 29, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Robert C. Kirkwood
Robert Campbell Kirkwood, 93, North Palm Beach, Fla., and formerly of Bismarck, died April 27, 1998, in a Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at Lost Tree Chapel, North Palm Beach.

Robert was born in Provo, Utah, on Nov. 19, 1904, the son of the late Thomas Matthew and Sarah Jane (Whitehead) Kirkwood. He began his career as a stock boy with the F.W. Woolworth Company in Salt Lake City and he progressed through the company ranks to become chairman and chief executive officer. He was honorary director of the company from his retirement in 1969 until his death. He resided in various cities throughout the United States during his 54[1/2] years career with Woolworth's.

He received honorary doctorates from Simpson College, Des Moines, Iowa, and Suffolk University, Boston, Mass. He was a lecturer and adviser at the School of Business of Brigham Young University; he was a member of Tobe Lecture Series at Harvard University, as well as a lecturer in business subjects at other universities around the country.

He was a member of the Rotary Club in Sheridan, Wyo., Bismarck, and Grand Forks, a member of Elks Lodge of Mitchell, S.D., and Bismarck; and a member of the Free and Accepted Masons. He was a former director of Lost Tree Club, former trustee of Lost Tree Chapel and former director of Ecclestone Development Inc., North Palm Beach. Mr. Kirkwood was director of Irving Trust Co., New York City, for 18[1/2] years, director of the Charter of New York, a bank holding company, and director of Greenwich Country Club, Greenwich, Conn. for 10 years. A major shopping center in Bismarck, the Kirkwood Mall, was named after Robert because of his extensive involvement in civic activities.

He is survived by two children, Robert C. Jr., Hollywood, Fla.; and Mary Kirkwood Van Loan, East Dennis, Mass.; five grandchildren, Robert C. III, Jupiter, Fla., Richard Van Loan, Boston, Kimberly Kirkwood, Dallas, Lynn Van Loan Brainerd, Stony Creek, Conn., Robert Van Loan, Stamford, Conn.; two great-grandchildren, Robert Campbell Kirkwood IV, and Cameron Marr Kirkwood; four sisters, Phyllis Cooper, Provo, Utah, Mildred Snyder, Keensburg, Colo., Ann Graehl, El Cajon, Calif., and Dorothy Beers, Provo; and one brother, Jack W. Kirkwood, Missoula, Mont.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sarah and Thomas; and his wife, Virginia B. Kirkwood, who died in 1987.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Kirkwood may be made to Diabetes Research Institute Foundation. (Howard Funeral Home, North Palm Beach)
