Ruby Buffington, 54, Bismarck, died Aug. 13, 2000 at her home. Arrangements are pending with Bismarck Funeral Home.

Matt Freidig
Matt Freidig Jr., 89, died peacefully on Aug. 12, 2000 in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with a rosary and vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service. Matt was born Nov. 12, 1910 to Matt Sr. and Marian (Mosbrucker) Freidig near Crown Butte. He moved with his parents to Oliver County near Center in 1918. He attended the local farm school and helped out on the family farm. He married Eva (Koch) on Oct. 8, 1935 in Center. They farmed in the Center area until 1960, when they moved to Bismarck. He worked for the Bismarck Parks and Recreation Department from 1960 to 1981 when he retired. Matt also enjoyed helping area farmers. He was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church and the Saint Anthony Verein. He was a lifetime member of the Bismarck Eagles and a member of the Bismarck Senior Center where he was a volunteer and maintenance supervisor and he delivered meals on wheels. Matt loved to have company and play cards. He also enjoyed dancing and playing pool. Matt was always very proud of his lawn and nice garden. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him. Matt is survived by his wife, Eva, of 65 years; two daughters and one son-in-law, Evangeline and Tom Himmelspach, Center, and Marilyn Himmelspach, Washington; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Raynard, Virginia, and Larry and Chris of Washington; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; one sister, Johanna Jackson, Washington; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Maggie, Mandan, and Leo and Helen, Minnesota. He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Nick; and his sisters, Katie, Frances and Caroline. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Olaf B. Hallingstad
PLAZA -- Olaf B. Hallingstad, 82, Plaza, died Aug. 12, 2000 in a Parshall nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Shell Creek Lutheran Church, rural Plaza, with burial in Trinity Cemetery, rural Plaza. He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Bates, Bismarck; two sons, Bruce, Minneapolis, and Steve, Minot; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. (Johnson Funeral Home, Parshall)

Melvin W. Hoard, 82, Bismarck, died Aug. 12, 2000 in a local hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at Eastgate Funeral Service Chapel. Further arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Eileen Johnson
MINNEWAUKAN -- Eileen Johnson, 76, El Monte, Calif., and formerly of Minnewaukan, died Aug. 13, 2000 in El Monte. Arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Minnewaukan.

Martin Lund
NEW TOWN -- Martin Lund, 93, New Town, died Aug. 12, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Bethel Lutheran Church, New Town, with burial in the Sanish Riverview Cemetery. He is survived by one son, Don Lund, Watford City; two daughters, Coreen Beard, New Town, and Coleen Johnson, Williston; one sister, Georgiana Ellingson, Eugene, Ore.; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Hertha E. McCartney
Hertha E. McCartney, 76, died Aug. 12, 2000 in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Mandan. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. There will be no visitation at the church. Hertha was born on June 16, 1924 at Bluegrass, the daughter of Robert and Mathilda (Gappert) Mulhauser. Raised and educated there, she married John J. McCartney on May 21, 1946 in Mandan. She was employed as a clerk at Taylor Drug in Mandan. An accomplished seamstress, she enjoyed making clothing, as well as reading and playing cards with family and friends. A dedicated blood donor, she had received her five gallon pin. She was very devoted to her church and its work. She served as president and held other offices for the Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the choir, a Sunday School teacher and regularly attended Lutheran Women's Missionary Society rallies and conventions. Most of all, Hertha loved her family and thoroughly enjoyed her role as wife and mother. Hertha is survived by her husband, John; two sons, John R. McCartney and Steven McCartney and his wife, Sandy, all of Mandan; one daughter, Denise Mayer and her husband, Timm, Milbank, S.D.; five grandchildren, Christine Ramsdell, Samuel, Rebecca and Zachary Meyer and Shelby McCartney; one great-grandson, Shandler Ramsdell; three sisters, Elsa Linder, Denver, Colo., and Luise Morman and Mathilda Elam, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Edgar, Robert and Theodore Mulhauser.

Robert Rasmussen
REGAN -- Robert Rasmussen, 84, Regan, died Aug. 12, 2000 in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Eastgate Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be in Regan Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service. Robert was born on April 21, 1916 at Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Martinus and Rosa (Thompson) Rasmussen. The family moved to Regan in August 1920, when Robert was four years old. He attended grade school at Schrunk No. 2. He farmed with his Dad, was in the CCC's, and in March 1942, went into the Army for three years where he was stationed in Hawaii for a time. He married his childhood sweetheart, Clara Kvasnicka on May 1, 1946 at Wilton. They moved to a farm near Regan, where he lived until entering Medcenter One Care Center in May 2000. Robert loved animals, especially his sheep, and had many pets. He always said a parade wasn't a parade if it didn't have a John Deere tractor in it. He also liked old cars, fishing and hunting. His favorite job early in the spring was planting and raising potatoes. Robert is survived by his wife, Clara; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Darvin Pfennig, McClusky; three sons and one daughter-in-law, James and Paulette, Wing, and Charles and Leonard, both of Regan; four grandchildren, Carey, Heather, Matthew and John; one great-grandson, Lucas; one brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Muriel, Regan; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Betty and Nick Krushe and Rose Sperry, all of Bismarck; and a very special Army buddy, Walter Burke of North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Calvin and Hans.

Ruby Buffington, 54, Bismarck, died Aug. 13, 2000 at her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at First United Methodist Church, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending with Bismarck Funeral Home.

Mabel Glaser
SOLEN -- Mabel Glaser, 78, San Diego, Calif. and Solen, died Aug. 7, 2000 in Mt. Angel, Ore. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Mandan Union Cemetery. Mabel was born in Dunn Center and retired from General Dynamics, San Diego, where she had worked since 1942. Survivors include one brother, Orvin John Braaten, San Diego; and sisters, Donna Mae Tennesen, San Diego, and Doreen Daily, Bonita, Calif. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Melvin W. Hoard
Melvin W. Hoard, 82, Bismarck, died Aug. 12, 2000 in a local hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Rick Fossum officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Melvin was born on Nov. 26, 1917 near Wilson, Okla. He was educated in Colton, Calif., then joined the Navy on Sept. 11, 1942 and was discharged in 1947. He worked for Coca-Cola Company for 40 years in San Bernardino, Calif. He was a resident in Cherry Valley, Calif., until 1994, when Mel and his wife, Cecilia retired in Garrison, then later moved to Bismarck. Melvin enjoyed building, masonry (rock) work, gardening and woodworking. He is survived by his wife, Cecilia; three sons, Wayne, Australia, Stephen, Loma Linda, Calif., and David, Richardton; one stepson, Kevin Franklin, Denver, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Karen Angell, Yucaipa, Calif., and Karol Vladovich, Huntington Beach, Calif.; and four grandchildren. Robert Jacob Jacobsen
LUVERNE -- Robert Jacob Jacobsen, 75, Luverne, died Aug. 11, 2000 in a farm accident. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at Quam-Plaistad-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown. He is survived by his wife, Arda; five sons, Ried, Downers Grove, Ill., Lyle, Dayton, Va., Jerome, Grand Prairie, Texas, Roy, Fargo, and Larry, Luverne; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Norma Carmichael, Ogden, Utah, and Lolo Greenland, Hayward, Calif.; and three brothers, Talbert, Valley City, Richard, Cumby, Texas, and Donald, Savannah, Ga.

Eileen E. Johnson
MINNEWAUKAN -- Eileen E. Johnson, 78, El Monte, Calif., and formerly of Minnewaukan, died Aug. 13, 2000 in El Monte. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Minnewaukan, with burial in the church cemetery. She is survived by one son, Gary, Los Angeles, Calif.; six daughters, Leoda Clouse, Minot, Gloria Johnson, El Monte, Linda Voge, Bismarck, Elaine Fayton, Altadena, Calif., Marilyn Pisani, Los Angeles, and Joanne Johnson, Salt Lake City, Utah; 19 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Lawrence Lipp
FARGO -- Lawrence Lipp, 70, Fargo, died Aug. 12, 2000 in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Mandan Veterans of Foreign War Post 707 and the Mandan American Legion Post 40. Visitation begins at today from noon-9 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Christian Mothers rosary scheduled at 7 p.m. Lawrence Lipp was born July 30, 1930 in Linton, the son of Lawrence and Elizabeth (Voller) Lipp. He was raised and educated in Solen, where he graduated from Solen High School. Lawrence served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1952 and from 1956-1958. Lawrence returned to Dickinson where he was a salesman for Sweetheart Bakery. In 1961, Lawrence moved to Bismarck where he was employed as a guard at the State Penitentiary and construction worker for William Kirkmeier. He has been a resident at the Veterans' Home in Lisbon for the past 28 years. Lawrence was a hard worker. He liked working with leather and dancing. Lawrence is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim (Madonna), Macomb, Ill., and Terry (Angie), Fargo; and four grandchildren, Samantha, Josie, Jon and Zachery Lipp; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Agnes (George) Leingang, Mandan, Eva Schwartz, Mandan; Betty (Anton) Frieszk, Mandan and Regina Braxmeyer, Seattle, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Thomas; two sisters, Mary Glass and Magdelina Friesz; and five brothers, Jake, Adam, Joe, Bill and Pius. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)
