Alfred worked at the North Dakota Motor Vehicle Department in the early 1960's and at the North Dakota Highway Department from 1970, retiring in April 2000 with 31 years of service. He married Karen Erickson in 1987 where of that marriage a daughter, Jessica was born in 1990. Alfred was born with spinal bifida and spent parts of many years in treatment at the Shriners Hospital in Minneapolis. Despite his handicap, he was a vigorous competitor on the wheelchair basketball court and a founding member of the Bismarck-Mandan Wheelchair Basketball Association. He liked all sports, and as an incurable Vikings' fan, always found a way to forgive them. He loved fishing and the times he spent with different people through Sporting Chance, but most of all, he loved to tell of surviving Devils Lake fishing adventures with cousin Marvin Mead. Alfred's greatest love was his daughter, Jessica, who thought him the greatest father ever. He was very close to his family who encourage his independence but never quit caring for him. He spoke warmly of his wheelchair basketball buddies and fellow workers at the Highway Department. Alfred's obvious hobby was collecting vintage model automobiles, the muscle cars -- he displayed them on special shelving in his living room.
