Stephen N. Schmit
Funeral services for Stephen N. Schmit, 81, Carrington, were held on Friday, August 3, 2001 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Carrington. Reverend Lawrence Haas officiated. Mr. Schmit died Monday, July 30, 2001 at Golden Acres Manor, Carrington.
Stephen Nicholas Schmit, son of Hubert and Barbara (Youngers) Schmit, was born June 9, 1920 at the family farm near Bordulac, N.C. He was raised and attended school at Bordulac. Stephen lived and worked on the family farm after finishing school.
On June 9, 1947, he married Edith Thornton at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Bordulac. They purchased half of the same section of land that Stephen was born and raised on. Stephen farmed and milked dairy cows and worked for John Murphy until retiring in 1987. After retiring, they continued to live on the family farm until Stephen entered the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford in April 1995. He moved to Golden Acres Manor in Carrington in October 1996 to be closer to Edith. Stephen was a 4-H leader for many years while his children were growing up. He was a life-long member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church at Bordulac.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Schmit, Carrington; four sons, Stephen C. Schmit, West Fargo; Timothy (Faye) Schmit, Williston; Leonard (Rita) Schmit, Mapleton and Joseph (Kelly) Schmit, West Fargo; six daughters, Annabell (Bob) Bruce, Glendale, Ariz.; Mary (Bill) Bowen, Jamestown; Colleen (Richard) Biel, Des Moines, Wash.; Joanna Slag, Bismarck; Bertha (Maurice) Bell and Elizabeth Schmit, both of San Diego, Calif.; two brothers, Vincent (Patricia) Schmit, Bordulac and Vernon Schmit, Edmonds; one sister, Rosella (Delbert) Howey, Lisbon; 20 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Barbara Schmit; a sister, Eleanor Seiler; and an infant child.
Interment at Carrington Cemetery, Carrington.
Evans Funeral Home, Carrington, was in charge of arrangements.

Steve L. Walberg
Funeral services for Steve L. Walberg, 50, Leonard, were held on Monday, July 30, 2001 at Helendale Lutheran Church, Leonard. The Reverend David N. Thoreson officiated. Mr. Walberg died on Thursday, July 26, 2001 in his home, surrounded by his family after a two-year battle with cancer.
Steve Lloyd Walberg, son of Lloyd and Marion Walberg, was born on October 12, 1950 in Breckenridge, Minn. He attended grade school in rural Viking, Colfax, Walcott and graduated from Kindred High School in 1968. He also attended Jamestown College. On September 4, 1971, he married Elizabeth Radcliffe at Helendale Lutheran Church, Leonard. They lived most of their married life in the Leonard area. After working briefly for NSP and a few years with Nokleberg Construction, Steve started his own business, Walberg Construction. He owned and operated his business for over 25 years. He then worked for Moore Engineering of West Fargo until his illness prevented him from working. Steve had a passion for sports throughout his life. Starting with a successful high school sports career, he continued to play league basketball, softball and pool most of his adult life. He also did volunteer coaching for grade school and junior high basketball and high school track at the Leonard School. Besides playing sports, Steve also was an avid NDSU Bison Football fan and teammaker. He spent many great weekends with “Kraut’s Krew” at Bison Football games. Steve was active in many Leonard community organizations, especially the Leonard Volunteer Fire Department. He proudly served as Fire Chief and on the Leonard Fire Board for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Liz Walberg, Leonard; one daughter, Cari Walberg, Fargo; one son, Christopher Walberg, Leonard; his parents, Lloyd and Marion Walberg, Walcott; two brothers, Charles (Chip) Walberg, Oxford, Ala. and Carl Walberg, Fargo; two sisters, Stephanie (Darrel) Liedahl, McLeod and Jill (Tom) Solhjem, Fort Benning, Ga.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Charles “Chip” Walberg, Carl Walberg, Jim Zimmerman, Virgil Schulz, Lynn Goltz, Greg Wessels and Leo Ernst. Honorary pallbearers were the Leonard Fire Department members, Kraut’s Krew, Steve’s sports teammates, kids that Steve coached, and men that worked for Steve.
Music was provided by Roberta Young, Darrel and Jessica Liedahl and Amy Lee.
Interment at Helendale Lutheran Cemetery, Leonard.
West Funeral Home, Casselton, was in charge of arrangements.

Brenda Krueger
Funeral services for Brenda Krueger, 32, Valley City, were held on Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at Out Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City. Reverend Paul Huso officiated. Mrs. Krueger died on Friday, July 27, 2001 at Mercy Hospital, Valley City.
Brenda Lyn Huber, daughter of Eugene and Theresa (Baumgartner) Huber, was born on November 27, 1968 at Milwaukee, Wisc. She moved with her family to Devils Lake at a young age. She later moved to Lisbon with her family where she grew up and attended school. Brenda moved to Valley City in 1987.
On February 10, 1990, she married Daron Krueger at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Valley City. The couple made their home in Valley City where Brenda was a homemaker and was raising her family.
She is survived by her husband, Daron Krueger, Valley City; one son, Darock Krueger, Valley City; two daughters, Arelle and Rathyn, both of Valley City; her parents, Eugene Huber, Lisbon, and Theresa Huber, Fargo; three brothers, Bill Huber, West Fargo; Dean (Stephanie) Huber, Wahpeton; and Don Huber, Fargo; two sisters, Janine (David) Ogren, Wishek and Sheri Huber, St. Cloud, Minn.
Interment at Hillside Cemetery, Valley City.
Peterson-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home, Valley City, was in charge of arrangements.

Kathleen L. Herman
Funeral services for Kathleen L. Herman, 64, Kulm, N.D., were held Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at First Congregational Church, Kulm. Reverend Bill Bradley officiated. Mrs. Herman died Thursday, July 26, 2001 at MerictCare Hospital, Fargo.
Kathleen Louise Pfahl, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Spitzer) Pfahl, was born on March 4, 1937 in Ashley, N.D. Kathleen grew up and attended school in Ashley and graduated from Ashley High School and Ellendale NI. She taught school in Gwinner, Wilton, Napoleon and Bowdon, N.D.
On March 9, 1961, she married James F. Herman in Ashley. The couple farmed east of Kulm until 1965 when they purchased a farm south of Kulm where they produced small grains, beef and dairy. They moved into Kulm in 1999. Kathleen was a member of the First Congregational church in Kulm where she produced the weekly bulletins and newsletter. She also taught Sunday School and was also active in other civic and service organizations including the Whitestone Historical Society, Northwest Friends Club, North Dakota Union League, Farmers Union and the District 28 Democratic-NPL.
She is survived by her husband, James Herman, Kulm; her mother, Elizabeth Pfahl; two sons, Matthew J. (Darla) Herman and Steven J. (Yvonne) Herman, all Kulm; one daughter, Joyce (Steve) Glass, Valley City; one brother, John Allen (Leah) Pfahl, Papillion, Neb.; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, John Pfahl. Interment at New Beresina Cemetery, rural Kulm.

F. Douglas Fredrickson
F. Douglas Fredrickson, 60, Lisbon, died Wednesday, October 10, 2001 in Lisbon Medical Center. (Armstrong, Lisbon).

Gordon Halverson
Funeral services for Gordon Halverson, 85, rural Leonard, were held on Friday, October 19, 2001 at Helendale Lutheran Church, rural Leonard. Reverend David Thoreson officiated. Mr. Halverson died Monday, October 15, 2001 at Heartland Hospital, Fargo.
Gordon Halverson, son of George and Martha (Germanson) Halverson was born on January 25, 1916 near Leonard. He attended school in the Chase Lake area. He moved back to the Leonard area with his family. As a young man, Gordon worked in the Civilian conservation Corps near Minot. Gordon worked from 1939-1956 for the Zontelli Brothers, Crosby, Minn., installing REA lines and serving as an electrical shovel operator in the iron mines.
In 1940, he married Mary Anderson, in Fargo. The family moved to Liberia, West Africa in March 1956, where Gordon was an electrical shovel operator for the Liberian Mining Company. In 1962, the family returned to the Leonard area to farm and ranch. Mrs. Halverson died in 1975. Gordon married Nora Nelson Peters January 24, 1985 in Fort Ransom. They continued to live in the Leonard area until the time of Gordon’s death.
He is survived by his wife Nora Halverson; two sons, Wally (Diane) Halverson, Fargo and Lyle (Sandra) Halverson, Ewa Beach, Hawaii; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Stanley (Artis) Halverson, Fargo and Lloyd (Carmen) Halverson, Eugene, Ore; and one sister, Laura Halverson, Fargo. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mary; daughter, Marilyn Johnson and brother Clifford.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Scott Johnson, Allen Johnson, Paul Anderson, Kenny Anderson, Jason Anderson, and Chris Walberg.
Special music was provided by McLeod Connection. Accompanist: Bernice Painter.
Interment at Helendale Cemetery, rural Leonard.

Harold M. Steffes
Funeral services for Harold M. Steffes, 71, Valley City, were held on Friday, October 19, 2001 at Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Mr. Steffes died Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Harold M. Steffes, son of Henry and Agatha (Ahlers) Steffes was born May 1, 1930, in rural Granville, Iowa where he was raised. Harold moved to rural Enderlin where he worked on the family farm and then on several other area farms. Later he moved to Marion and then, in 1990, Harold moved to Valley City. He is survived by several cousins and was preceded in death by his parents.
Interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Granville, Iowa.

Melvin H. Krentz
Funeral services for Melvin H. Krentz, 87, Lisbon, were held on Saturday, October 20 at United Methodist Church, Lisbon. Reverent Beth Conrad officiated. Mr. Krentz died Wednesday, October 17, 2001 at Parkside Nursing Home, Lisbon.
Melvin H. Krentz, son of John and Gertrude (Buss) Krentz was born on May 13, 1914 in rural Anselm. He attended school in Sheldon.
On November 23, 1939, he married Doris Halliday, in rural Lisbon. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corp and worked for the US Forest Service in Calif., N.D. and Arkansas. He later farmed. In 1940 he began working at the Lisbon Post Office where he worked for 37 years. He had served as the treasurer of United Methodist Church for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Krentz; two sons, James Krentz, Lisbon and John Krentz, Lisbon; two daughters, Mary (Lawrence) Lee, Stacy, Minn. and Deborah (LeMont) Kempel, Wyoming, Minn.; two brothers, Russell Krentz, Mt. Clemens Township, Mich. and Kenneth (Nettie), Lisbon; two sisters, Marlys Faller, Lisbon and Elaine Tang, Verona. He was preceded in death by a son, three brothers and one sister.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Douglas Krentz, Steve Faller, Keith Faller, Kevin Faller, Terry Faller, Randy Faller, Argil Krentz, and David Anderson.
Music was provided by organist Mary Jo Smith and soloist Joan Montgomery.
Interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon.
Armstrong Funeral Home, Lisbon, was in charge of arrangements.
