Robert A. Espe
Robert A. Espe, 69, Bismarck, died Aug. 27, 2000, in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jeff Tengesdal officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, rural Mandan. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Robert was born on March 29, 1931, in Rolette, the son of Peter and Una (Finnigan) Espe. He was raised in Mylo and graduated from Rolette High School in 1948. He served in the Army from Nov. 4, 1948, until Aug. 1, 1952, including serving in the Korean War, and held the rank of corporal. Upon discharge, he enrolled at Jamestown College where he met his wife (Marcelline Erickson) and graduated in 1956 with a bachelor of science degree in accounting. On Sept. 5, 1955, he married his one true love, Marcelline Erickson, in Jamestown. Following his graduation from Jamestown College, he was employed as an Internal Revenue Agent in the cities of Fargo, Grand Forks, Dickinson, Minot and Bismarck. Prior to his retirement in 1986, he held the position of group manager of the Internal Revenue Service for 10 years and was honored with the Albert Gallatine Award, which was awarded by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Since his retirement, he enjoyed taking his dogs hunting, fishing with family and friends, spending time outdoors working in the yard and garden, and playing with investments on his computer. He was a life member of the Bismarck-Mandan Elks Lodge. He especially enjoyed traveling with his wife across the country to their favorite spots, such as Laughlin, Nev., where they spent several winters. He will always be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to all those who knew him. Robert is survived by his wife, Marcelline, of 45 years; two daughters and one son-in-law, Dr. Barbara Espe, Bismarck, and Patricia Espe-Pfeifer and Dr. Jason Pfeifer, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and two sons and one daughter-in-law, Douglas and Cheri Espe, Cloquet, Minn., and Dean Espe, Dallas. Of his siblings, he is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Louise Espe, Orting, Wash.; his sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Isadore Gores, Chelan, Wash.; and brother and sister-in-law, Rodney and Viola Espe, Klamath Falls, Ore. He was the proud grandfather of four beautiful grandchildren, Robert (age 14), John (age 12), Brenna (age 10), and Autumn (age 6) of Cloquet, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Geraldine Miller and lifelong friend, Wayne Walsh of Mylo. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Jerome Jaskowski
JAMESTOWN -- Jerome Jaskowski, 73, Jamestown, died Aug. 30, 2000, in the Jamestown hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Basilica of St. James, Jamestown, with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Fried. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; one daughter, Linda Neppl, Fargo; three sons, Daniel, Wahpeton, Thomas, Bismarck, and Timothy, West Fargo; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Virginia Nelson, Bismarck, and Grace Schudlich, Sparks, Nev.; and two brothers, Bernard, Jamestown, and Martin, Eleva, Wis. Ross A. Johnson
UNDERWOOD -- Ross A. Johnson, 21, Underwood, died Aug. 30, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, Underwood, with the Rev. James Ryan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:30-6 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood, and will continue after 7 tonight at the church. A prayer service will begin at 7:30 tonight at the church. Ross Alan Johnson was born May 26, 1979, at Bismarck, to Gregory and Veronica (Beketaut) Johnson. He grew up in Underwood and graduated from Underwood High School in 1997. In July of 1997, he was diagnosed with having a brain tumor, which he courageously fought until his death on Wednesday evening. He had attended Bismarck State College for one semester. He enjoyed tennis, bowling, camping and spending time with his friends. He is survived by his parents, Greg and Veronica Johnson, Underwood; two brothers, Tony, Underwood, and Chris, who is attended BSC; one sister, Akiko Udui, Koror, Palau; and his grandparents, Burnell and Alice Johnson, Underwood.

Katherine Kastner
Katherine Kastner, 92, Bismarck, died Aug. 30, 2000, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at the church, where a prayer service will be held at 7 tonight. Katherine was born April 27, 1908, at Odessa, Russia, to Christian and Mary (Pashkewigh) Koch. She moved to Canada with her family at the age of five. She was raised and educated in Estevan. She married Joe F. Kastner, Nov. 3, 1927, at Estevan. They began farming south of Glen Ullin. Katherine loved being on the farm, raising poultry and a large garden. She also bakked some of the best buns, pies and rolls. They retired in 1976, and moved into Glen Ullin. They moved to Bismarck in 1984. Joe died Aug. 18, 1984. She was a past member of Homemakers. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Dorothy, Bismarck; one son-in-law, Ted Malinowski, Chicago; one daughter-in-law and her husband, Connie and Frank Barnick, Steele; her grandsons, Allan and Kevin Malinowski, Chicago; her step-grandchildren, John Reinhardt, Glen Ullin, Colleen Siroshton, Bismarck; four great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill Koch, Canada; two sisters-in-law, Tracy Koch, Canada, and Mary Kastner, Glen Ullin; and her special friends at Marillac Manor and the members of the Birthday Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Jean; her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Clara; and one brother. (Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin)

Lyle B. McLean
Services for Lyle B. McLean, 63, Paso Robles, Calif., were held August 26 at Paso Robles Elks Lodge. Burial will be in Menoken Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; two daughters, Lila McLean, Paso Robles, and Terry Enfield, Templeton; one son, John, Paso Robles; five grandchildren; two brothers, Diordan, Bismarck, and Bradley, Menoken; and his half-brothers and half-sisters, Danny, Margaret, Mary, Colleen and Virginia McLean.

Paul McMillen
WILLISTON -- Paul McMillen, 87, Williston, died Aug. 31, 2000, in the Williston care center. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Riverview Cemetery, Williston. He is survived by his daughter, Susan DeRosa; two grandchildren; and his sister, Phyllis Hutchinson, Tucson, Ariz. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Louis E. Niemeyer
JAMESTOWN -- Louis E. Niemeyer, 87, Jamestown, died Aug. 30, 2000, in a Jamestown care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Basilica of St. James, Jamestown. Further arrangements are pending at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.

Florence Thorsness
STEELE -- Florence Thorsness, 93, Steele, died Aug. 30, 2000, in the Steele care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tusday at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown. She is survived by one son, Gordon DeKrey, Broomfield, Colo.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Tracy G. Walter
WARWICK -- Tracy G. Walter, 39, Warwick, died Aug. 30, 2000, near Warwick. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at American Lutheran Church, Tolna. Further arrangements are pending at Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.

Mike Welder
Mike Welder Sr., 80, died Aug. 31, 2000, in the Napoleon Care Center where he had been a resident since Dec. 26, 1999. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon, with the Rev. James Lauerman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Saturday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon. Mike Welder was born May 17, 1920, on the family farm south of Napoleon, the son of Anton and Rosina (Feist) Welder. He grew up on the family farm and received his elementary education in rural Shell Butte School. He married Catherine Mathern on Jan. 5, 1943, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Logan County. They returned to the Welder Homestead, where they lived and farmed for several years before they moved to a farm by Burnstad. In 1950, they purchased a farm nine miles north of Napoleon, where they farmed until retiring in Napoleon in 1977. On Dec. 26, 1999, he moved into the Napoleon Care Center. Mike was a member of Knights of Columbus and the Fire Department. He also loved music and used to play the clarinet in the Frank Sperle Band as a young man. He often played the harmonica for family and friends. He was a good storyteller and had a good sense of humor. He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Anton and Kathy Welder, Lodi, Calif., Joseph and Kathy Welder, West Fargo, Michael and Peggy Welder Jr., Napoleon; two daughters and sons-in-law, Josephine and Marvin Eckman, Bismarck, and Shirley and Pat McMullen, Fargo; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Rose Doll, Theresa and Tony Doll, Napoleon, and Agatha and Tony Piatz, Bismarck; sisters-in-law, Benita Mitzel, East Grand Forks, Minn., Agatha Mitzel, Bismarck, and Wilma Wittmeier, Napoleon; his grandchildren, Bill and his wife, Katrina, Jeff and his wife, Gwen, Suzie and Dan Welder, Dawn and her husband Jody Horner, Jackie and Joe Unger, Jennifer and Dan Eckman, Mike and Maggie McMullen, Randy Hilscher, and Mike and his wife Lia Hilscher; and his great-grandchildren, Whitney, Tyler and Seth Welder, Katelynn Horner, and Joshua and SharAnn Hilscher. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine; his parents; one brother, George; 11 stepbrothers and stepsisters; his brother-in-law, Wendelin Doll; and one grandchild.

Audrey Berquist
GARRISON -- Audrey Berquist died Sept. 27, 2000, in Garrison. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Nelson; one son, Tom Berquist; one sister, Bernice Dolin; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

HALLIDAY -- Hertha Gegelman, Halliday, died Sept. 29, 2000, in the Hazen hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Halliday. Further arrangements are pending at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

Verna Hafele
MARMARTH -- Verna Hafele, 88, Newell, S.D., died July 20, 2000, in her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Tuesday at Bowman Lutheran Church. She is survived by three sons, Peter, Newell, Joe, Longmont, Colo., and Louis, Rhame; three daughters, Marie Morris, Missoula, Mont., Donna Fritz, Belfield, and Marion Spethman, Powderly, Texas; one brother, Peter Smith, Chaney, Wash.; three sisters, Kathryn Tawney, Seattle, Margaret Foreman, Hermiston, Ore., and Helen Godwin, Denver; 19 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Freda Hildegarde Manning
BOWMAN -- Freda Hildegarde Manning, 99, Bowman, died Sept. 28, 2000, in a Bowman care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at Bowman Lutheran Church, with burial in Bowman Cemetery. She is survived by two sisters, Sophia Rolfsness, Bowman, and Ellen Rolfsnes, Rhame; and three brothers, Everet Rosling, Sheridan, Mont., Arnold Rosling, Caldwell, Idaho, and Edgar Rosling, Auburn, Mass. Ida Mattern
Ida Mattern, 93, Las Vegas, formerly of Bismarck, died Sept. 27, 2000, in Las Vegas. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Catholic Church, Las Vegas, with burial in Memory Gardens, Las Vegas. She is survived by six daughters, Blondina Uecker, Rita Champoux and patricia Puerner, all of Las Vegas, Viola Hyatt, Carson City, Nev., Elizabeth DeVries, Gig Harbor, Wash., and Charlotte Verran, Yakima, Wash.; 50 grandchildren; 108 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. David Mills
David Mills, 75, Bismarck, died Sept. 29, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital after a long illness with cancer. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ben A. Dove officiating. Burial will be in Glencoe Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. David was born Jan. 24, 1925, on the family farm in Emmons County. The son of Elizabeth (Klein) Hohimer and Henry Mills. David grew up and attended school in Emmons County. In 1941 the family moved to a farm in Burleigh County where he farmed with his father. From 1950 to 1952, David served in the Korean War with AAA 45th Division as a master sergeant. He returned to farming after his discharge. On Jan. 24, 1953, he married Delrene Asplund and they farmed south of Menoken until his retirement. He served on the Telfer School Board, Telfer Township Board and Township Zoning Board. David was a member of Bismarck Legion, VFW and the Eagles Club. He was a member of Glencoe Presbyterian Church and served as an elder. David enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed visiting with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Delrene; three sons and daughters-in-law, Daymon and Lois, Lance and Tammy, and Lynn and Sherry; his grandchildren, Daymon Jr., Wade, Jennifer, Jaime, Lance, Cody and Ty Mills; six sisters and four brothers-in-law, Beverly and Douglas Olson, Delores Olson, Karen and Pete Hogue, Sharon and Jerry Franklin, Kay and Robert Dahl, and Doris and Ted Wanner; two brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Lois Hohimer, and Dennis and Kathy Mills; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister.
