Mr. Smith was born July 24, 1915, in St. Paul, Minn., the youngest son of William A. and Catherine (Thornton) Smith. He was educated in the St. Paul public school system. He worked many jobs during the "Dust Bowl" days. He began his life's career working at St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance in Sioux Falls, S.D., where he met and married Rita Ruth O'Connor. In 1961, the Smith family moved to Bismarck, where he worked as managing officer of Dakota Fire Insurance Company. He worked there for 10 years, after which time he began a general agency which he and his wife, Rita, operated for 11 years. Retirement loomed and he and Rita spent 10 years enjoying travel in a GMC mmotorhome, seeing every state in the United States and most of Canada. He traveled to Ireland, the birthplace of his mother, and kissed the Blarney Stone, which affected him all of his life. He was an active grandfather and loved the time he spent walking with his wife and learning about computers and all things new and interesting. Mr. Smith's military service was for four years in the U.S. Marine Corp Reserve (1932-1936), and five years in the U.S. Army (1940-1945), where he survived a direct machine gunning by an angry ME-109 fighter among other excitements. Mr. Smith was active in the Civil Air Patrol as a mission pilot, attaining the rank of Major. He was also active in Missouri Slope Model Aviation Club, and was a Ham radio operator. He spent much of his time active in his church, spreading his own sense of love and humor to his friends and strangers alike.
