LAMOURE -- Paul Jacob Thielges, 87, LaMoure, died Sept. 21, 2000, in the Valley City hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, LaMoure, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Cordula; seven sons, Jerome, Seattle, Wash., Ray, LaMoure, Martin, Bismarck, Mark, Ellendale, Doran, Bismarck, Brian, Adair, Iowa, and Leon, Enderlin; three daughters, Colleen McFadden, Pocatello, Idaho, Janel Blount, Boise, Idaha, and Ellen Schulz, Bismarck; 28 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Palmer, Jamestown, Richard, Medford, Ore., and Jim, Emmet; and one sister, Lorraine Kauphusman, Jamestown. Julius W. Burzloff
Julius W. Burzloff, 75, 216 Center St., died Oct. 5, 2000, in his home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Todd Hylden officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church. Julius W. Burzloff was born May 30, 1925, at Anamoose, the son of Albert and Anna (Moser) Burzloff. He was raised and educated at Anamoose. He became active in the electrical trade at an early age and worked in North Dakota. During World War II he was employed at the Kaiser Shipyards in Vancouver, Wash., and also the Naval Base at Vallejo, Calif. He returned to North Dakota where he was employed as an electrician on the North Dakota missile projects and the power plants. Julius spent about 40 years as an electrician. He married Alta Lingenfelter on May 26, 1956. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, IBEW Local 714 and 714 Retirees Club. He is survived by one sister, Lee Wiebe, Lodi, Calif.; and one brother, Fred, Lodi. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alta; one sister; and one brother.

Irene Collins
STANTON -- Irene Collins, our beloved wife and mother, died Oct. 5, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital, at the age of 70. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, Stanton, with the Rev. Gary Benton officiating. Irene's passions were cooking, reading, visiting with family and friends, and above all, taking care of others. Mom was a member of the Lighthouse Assembly of God in Stanton. She was strong in her faith and loved her church, her people and her God. God truly loved our mother. He graced her with a loving heart, a compassionate spirit and the greatest sense of humor in the world. Anyone who knew her, loved her -- and laughed with her always. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to WARC in Beulah. She is survived by her loving husband, Eldon; three brothers, Ray Walden, East Grand Forks, Minn., Dan Walden, Elko, Nev., and Dean Walden, Easton, Pa.; three sisters, Florence Linke, Tacoma, Wash., Jolene Dowhower, Racine, Wis., and Lorraine Lawrence, Bremerton, Wash.; her children, Roger Chalmers, Ninemile, Mont., Linda Richardson, Deming, Wash., Susan Mitchell, Stanton, Cherie Sieberlick, Fairbanks, Alaska, Dan Chalmers, Missoula, Mont., Rick Collins, Palmer, Alaska, Max McEvoy, Puyallup, Wash., Bruce McEvoy, Shelby, Mont., and Colleen Lammers, Sumner, Wash.. Ethel Eckroth, 75, Mandan, died Oct. 6, 2000, in a Fort Yates hospital. Arrangements are pending at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Anton M. Fettig
NAPOLEON -- Anton M. "Tony" Fettig, 81, Napoleon, died Oct. 6, 2000, in his home at Napoleon. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon, with the Rev. James Lauerman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Jim Olig will serve as organist, with special music provided by the children and grandchildren; and the church choir. Pallbearers for the service are Terry J. Bitz, Ken L. Bitz, Cory M. Bitz, Chris A. Bitz, Jonathan J. Fettig, Tyler J. Fettig and Michael Fettig. Honorary pallbearers are Tom Aberle, John Becker, Ray Beccker, Joe A. Fettig, John Fettig, Ervin Geiszler, Matt Gross, Leo Gross, Eugene Horner, Tony Horner, Joe Reisenauer, Leo Roehrich, Jack Roth, Bill Schmitt, Mike Vetter Jr., and all ambulance, fireman and friends. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today and 9-10:15 a.m. Monday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon. A rosary will be said at 2 p.m. today, and a rosary will begin at 7:30 tonight, followed by a prayer service at 8, all at the funeral home. Tony was born June 14, 1919, on the family farm in Emmons County, near Hague, the son of Mathias and Theresia (Schmidt) Fettig. At the age of two, Tony and his family moved to a ranch near Burnstad, where he attended rural school and grew to manhood. On June 18, 1946, Tony married Verna Roth in St. Philip Neri Catholic Church at Napoleon. They made their home on his parent's farm and purchased the farm in 1956. They continued farming and ranching until they moved to their home in Napoleon in November 1980. He was active in the community, serving on both school and township boards, Farmers Union Elevator Board and St. Clare's Church Board in Burnstad where he was a member. In 1963 he helped organize the Rural Napoleon Fire Protection District and served as president from 1963 to 1971, and again from 1976 to 1981. In 1975 he helped organize the Napoleon Ambulance Service and served as its president from 1975 until 1981. He served on the Napoleon Farmers Union Oil Station Board several yeras and St. Philip Neri Catholic Church Board several years, where he was a member. He served on the board of the Napoleon Care Center, as sexton and treasurer of the Red Lake Community Cemetery at Burnstad. He was a member of Knights of Columbus at Napoleon and the Golden Age Club. He is survived by his wife, Verna Fettig; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marjorie and Vincent M. Bitz, Bismarck, and Marilou and Gerald Mitzel, Mason, Ohio; three sons and two daughters-in-law, James and Shirley Fettig, Bismarck, Charles Fettig, and Steven and Sherry Fettig, all of Burnstad; one brother and sister-in-law, Mathias and Agnes Fettig, Bismarck; and three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Anna and Walter Bruns, St. Paul, Minn., Mary and Ronald Jacovetta, Arvada, Colo., and Magdalen Haas, Napoleon; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sophie Fossen
HARVEY -- Sophie Fossen, 69, Harvey, died Oct. 5, 2000, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Bethany Lutheran Church, Harvey, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, Maddock. She is survived by her husband, Marvin; one son, Merle, Falls Church, Va.; two daughters, Amy Anderson, Heimdal, and Julie Vollmer, Vienna, Va.; eight grandchildren; and two brothers, Howard and Axel Nielsen, both of Sheyenne. Gladys Viola Haadem
TAPPEN -- Gladys Viola Englerth Haadem, 87, Tappen, died Oct. 5, 2000, at her daughter's home in McGregor, Minn. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tappen, with burial in Tappen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown. Gladys V. Englerth was born on August 20, 1913, in Stirum, the daughter of Sebastian and Olphelia (Wilke) Englerth. Her family moved to Robinson when she was 5. She attended school at Robinson graduating from Robinson High School. She attended Jamestown College and Valley City State where she received her teaching degree. She taught in rural schools around Tappen, Tuttle, and Robinson. Gladys married Roy Haadem of Tappen, on June 8, 1939, at Bowdon. She loved spending time with her family, gardening, and sewing. She was member of St. John's Ladies Aid, Tappen Homemakers Club, a 4-H leader, a substitute teacher, and served as Clerk of Tanner School District. Gladys is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Tilman and Judy Haadem, Tappen, and ElRoy and Carol Haadem, Bismarck; two daughters, Mona Kay Haadem, of McGregor, Minn., and Gay Ann Haadem, Bismarck; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Corrina and Jeff Pfaff, Bismarck, Lisa Haadem, Cleveland, Uriah Burchinal, Bismarck, Joshua Burchinal, Bismarck, Throy and Kristi Haadem, Rolla, Jerad Haadem, Bismarck, and Kristen Haadem, Casper, Wyo.; three great-grandsons, Justin and Kip Haadem, Cleveland, and Matthew Pfaff, Bismarck, and one great-granddaughter, MiKayla Pfaff, Bismarck. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy; a daughter, Rowene; her brother, Leo Englerth; her sister, Pearl Wick; and two grandsons, Trent Haadem and Ezra Burchinal.

Gertrude Kahl
Gertrude Kahl, 91, Bismarck, died Oct. 6, 2000, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Monday in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Flasher. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will begin at 7 tonight, followed by a parish rosary at 8. Visitation will continue after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. There will be no visitation at the church. Gertrude was born March 14, 1909, in Strasburg, the daughter of Fabian and Rose (Harsche) Hartman. She was raised and educated in the Shields area. Gertrude married Lawrence Kahl on Nov. 28, 1928, at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church in Raleigh. Gertrude was a dedicated farm wife who worked alongside her husband. She had a very pleasant and calming personality. She loved to visit with family and friends and serve them cake and coffee on their visits. Her children and many grandchildren were her joy and she loved to spend time with them. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Lawrence and Lorraine Kahl, and Buddy and Lorraine Kahl, both of Mandan; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Bernice Manolovitz, Mandan, Leona and Paul Gustin, and Marlys and Clint Barth, all of Bismarck, Delores and Robert LaDuke, Glendive, Mont., and Beverly and Harvey Vilhauer, Baker, Mont.; 52 grandchildren; 96 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her spouse, Lawrence; one son, Fred; one daughter, Florence Metzger; one son-in-law, Pete Manolovitz; three brothers, John, Ben and Whitey Hartman; one sister, Josephine Wuitschick; and three great-grandchildren.

Peter Paul Kelsch
NAPOLEON -- Peter Paul Kelsch, 76, Strasburg, died Oct. 6, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Agnes; six sons, Patrick, Rantoul, Ill., Thomas, Harwood, Peter Jr., Mandan, William, Strasburg, Richard, Bismarck, and Michael, Kindred; nine daughters, Darleen Devaney, St. Paul, Minn., Linda Miklos, Crystal, Minn., Donna DeGreef, Wilmont, S.D., Betty DeGreef, Mandan, Sharon Belter, Ramsey, Minn., Judy Hettwer, Grand Forks, Theresa Fercho, Bismarck, Candace Kelsch, Bismarck, and Janell Kelsch, Shoreview, Minn.; 28 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, George Kelsch, Fargo. Ruth Kunkel
NEW SALEM -- Ruth Kunkel, 83, Bismarck, formerly of New Salem, Antler and Bottineau, died Oct. 6, 2000, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Monday at Peace Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Jeffrey Franko officiating. Burial will be in Peace Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-noon Monday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Ruth Ann Marie was born on April 8, 1917, on the family farm south of New Salem, the daughter of Anna (Jahnke) and Otto Meier. She was raised on the farm and graduated from New Salem High School in 1935. She married Willard Kunkel on March 24, 1940, on the family farm. They lived in Hannaford for two years where Willard taught school. They had two children, James, who was born on March 20, 1942, and Kathleen, who was born on Dec. 11, 1943. Ruth and their children lived in New Salem while Willard was in the service during World War II. The family moved to Bottineau in 1945 where they made their home and raised their family. They lived in Antler from 1965 through 1968 where Willard was a U.S. Customs Officer. Willard passed away Oct. 3, 1968. Ruth then returned to Bottineau and worked at Mary Mac's Dress Shop and Linde's Jewelry until her retirement in 1978. She returned to New Salem to be near her family. Ruth was an active member of Peace Church and Peace Church Women's Guild, a member of the New Salem Art Association, and Sunnyside Homemakers Club. She was an artist of oil paintings and watercolor. Her pasttimes included reading, painting and doing daily crossword puzzles. Because of failing health and eyesight, Ruth entered Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center on Jan. 6, 1995. Ruth is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Dwite Gorder, Bismarck; her daughter-in-law, Priscilla, Manhattan, Kan.; her grandchildren, Peter Kunkel and his wife, Lisa, Irving, Texas, and their children, James and Patrick, Mary Ruth Kaufman and her husband, Rex, Arlington, Texas, Kevin Gorder, Bismarck, Brad Gorder, Fargo, and Kristin Gorder, Fargo; and her sister-in-law, Babe Meier, Kansas City; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard; her son, James; her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.

Gloria R. Steele
Gloria R. Steele, 62, Bismarck, died Oct. 6, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Burnie Kunz officiating. Burial will be in Center Community Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church one hour before services. Gloria R. was born June 15, 1938, in Mandan, the daughter of Vernon and Opal (Middlesteader) Steele. She was raised in Center and attended school there. She attended RD Hairstyling School in Bismarck and was once married to Bill Werre. She worked in Underwood and owned her own beauty shop in Wilton. She was employed at Seven Seas in Mandan. Gloria loved sprint car racing, was a fan of Donny Schotts, played bingo and loved watching horse racing. She was a former member of Women of the Moose. Gloria is survived by her daughter, Billy Jo Werre; and one brother, LeRoy Steele, both of Bismarck. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Jane Gray Stewart
Jane Gray Stewart died Oct. 5, 2000, at her home of natural causes. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, 214 E. Thayer Ave., Bismarck, with the Rev. Jacob Kincaid officiating. Jane Gray Stewart is a name synonymous with the arts and theater throughout North Dakota. She was born in Granville, on Dec. 1, 1919, to William and Leone (Richards) Gray, and graduated from Granville High School. There she won oratorical contests, participated in plays and pursued a major in theater at Minot State Teachers College. After graduating she continued her studies at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., and in New York City at the NBC Radio Institute and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. While still in graduate school, she taught speech and directed live radio dramas at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. In the early 1950s she taught speech and drama at Minot State Teachers College. In 1955 she married Maurice Smith and they moved to Bismarck. He passed away in 1962. She resumed her teaching career in speech and theater at Bismarck Junior College in 1956, and retired in 1985. During her tenure at the college, Jane's energy and creativity produced plays and musicals renowned throughout North Dakota. Among her many awards were the Bismarck Junior College Distinguished Service Citation and the Minot State University Golden Award for her many contributions. A joyful marriage to Jack Stewart in 1970 ended with his untimely death in 1974. After retirement from BSC, she and Shirley Staiger formed Backstage, Inc., and produced and costumed many shows. Jane also directed her talents to community service and was well-known for involvement in the Miss North Dakota Pageants, Mental Health productions, Folkfest Pageants and Sleepy Hollow. Her encouragement and direction inspired legions of young aspiring actors. Jane's continued support and mentoring of young people throughout their lives resulted in successful careers in and out of theater. Jane is survived by her nieces and their husbands from McHenry, Ill., Chris and Jeff Kacer, Lindsey and Rick Scheinert, and Kelly and Brian Riordan; her sister-in-law, Sally McPike, Fort Myers, Fla.; her cousins, Priscilla and Jerry Wilson, Janice and Jack Block, Polson, Mont., Juanita Borick, Houston, Texas, Elaine Booth, Towner, and Melba and Harold Neuman, Fergus Falls, Minn.; her stepson and family, Mike and Connie Stewart, Brooke and Sheryl; her beloved, J.D.; many devoted friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Robert Gray; her husbands, Maurice Smith and Jack Stewart; and her stepdaughter, Barbara Stewart. Memorials can be made to the Bismarck State College Foundation, Minot State University, Sleepy Hollow Summer Theater or a charity of the donor's choice. (Boelter Funeral Home)

MAKOTI -- Anthony W. Giesen, 79, Makoti, died Sept. 23, 2000, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, Makoti, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Magdaline; one son, Wayne, Makoti; four daughters, Patricia Eisenzimmer and Rosanne Gray, both of New Town, Lois Kaseman, Broken Arrow, Okla., and Donna Wheeling, Watford City; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Loretta Ostvolden, Makoti, Bernice Larson, Minot, Verena Liebel, Watford City, and Lale Longenbaugh, Ft.
