Brian P. Schaff
Brian P. Schaff, 33, Mandan, died Nov. 3, 2000 in a Mandan nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be in the Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation begins Sunday from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a parish vigil at 7:30 p.m. Brian P. Schaff was born Sept. 23, 1967 in the Mandan Hospital, the third son of Paul and Ann (Koller) Schaff. Brian lived on a farm near Solen until he was 14. Then he attended Solen and Cannon Ball Elementary and Middle School. During those years, he was active as a mass server in the Catholic Church, always ready to volunteer to servce, thus he had the opportunity to serve at his grandparents' Golden Anniversary and other special occasions. He was active in the Bismarck Horse Club and attended the International Music Camp in the spring of 1981. He enjoyed riding horses and playing with his dog. In 1981, he moved to Mandan with his family and attended Mandan High School and was active in the FFA. During this time, he enjoyed spending time with his friends and riding motorcycle. Brian had been employed at Mandan Supply. Brian is survived by his parents, Paul and Ann Schaff, Mandan; two brothers and one sister-in-law, James and his friend, Tracy, and Jerry and Brenda, all of Mandan; and one sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Clair Gullickson, Solen; three nieces, Amanda Schaff, Amber Mathern and Callie Gullickson; three nephews, Clayton Schaff, Cole Gullickson and Brent Schaff; and numerous aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gertrude and John Koller and Magdalena and Paul Schaff, and several aunts and uncles. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Theodore Wetzel
ROBINSON -- Theodore Wetzel, 85, Robinson, died Nov. 2, 2000 in the Steele nursing home after a short battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Tuttle United Methodist Church with the Rev. Walter Schott officiating. Burial will be in the Tuttle Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and noon-9 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Steele. Theodore was born April 22, 1915 the son of Johann and Rosina (Heitz) Wetzel on the Wetzel homestead, Tuttle. Theodore attended Tuttle School graduating in 1934. He married Vera L. Ochsner on July 12, 1943 at Steele. Together they made their home north of Steele. In 1948, they purchased the Charlie Roselip farm southwest of Robinson, where they still reside. His life long love was farming, horses and his grandchildren. Theodore has served on the Tuttle Elevator Board, FmHA County Committee, Robinson School Board, Social Service Board, Kidder County Commissioner, State Township Officers Association and ASCS Fieldman for 54 years. He was a member of the Robinson Lions Club, president of the Robinson Senior Citizens and secretary of Robinson Township for 51 years. He attended the Tuttle United Methodist Church. Theodore is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Vera; one son, Darrell (Myrna) Wetzel, Bismarck, one daughter, LaRee (Kevin) Misek, Hillsboro; six grandchildren, Lynette (Jeff) Simonson, Darren (Cheri) Wetzel, Byran Wetzel, Kristi, Heather and Melissa Misek; two great-granddaughters, Samantha and Jessica Wetzel; four sisters, Emma Wetzel, Ida Rott, Rosine Wong and Leona Schields. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Oscar and Edwin; and two sisters, Amelia and Erna. Our family would like to thank each of you for the kindness you have extended to us, your thoughtfulness will not be forgotten. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Hattie L. Berglund
HEIMDAL -- Hattie L. Berglund, 85, Devils Lake, and formerly of rural Heimdal, died Nov. 1, 2000 in a Devils Lake care center. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, at Klara Lutheran Church, rural Heimdal. She is survived by three sons, Harold, Cavalier, Ardell, Underwood, and Glenn, Devils Lake; two daughters, Marlys Baumann, Beach, and Donna Rogers, San Antonio, Texas; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother, Marvin Fossen, New Rockford; and a sister, Cora Stensrud, Devils Lake. Thorman M. Johnson
Thorman M. Johnson, 77, Leeds, died Nov. 3, 2000 in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds. Burial will be in Leeds Lutheran Cemetery. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. (Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds)

LINTON -- Anna Mary Richter, 90, Mandan, and formerly of Linton, died Nov. 4, 2000 in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton. Further arrangements are pending with Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

LINTON -- Viola "Peggy" Umber, 100, Linton, died Nov. 4, 2000 in the Linton hospital. Arrangements are pending with Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

Lois M. Beckley
BORDULAC -- Lois M. Beckley, 68, Bordulac, died Nov. 3, 2000 at her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Carrington, with burial in Carrington Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Percy; three sons, Daryle and Dan, both of Bordulac, and Dean, Kensal; two daughters, Charlotte Bachmeier, Carrington, and Carmen Wick, Woodworth; 11 grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; one brother, Roy Siebert, Jamestown, and two sisters, Shirley Hambrick, Carrington, and Patricia Ellingson, Glenfield. Karen Eugene, 50, Bismarck, died Nov. 4, 2000 at her home. Arrangements are pending with Bismarck Funeral Home.

Mary L. Gartner
Mary L. Gartner, 88, Mandan, died Nov. 3, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Rice. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Catholic Daughters Rosary said at 4 p.m., a Moose Ritual said at 7 p.m. and a parish vigil at 7:30 p.m., all on Tuesday at the funeral home. Visitation continues on Wednesday from 9-11:30 a.m. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Mary (Bendish) Gartner was born Feb. 17, 1912 in Austria. At the age of four months, she came to the United States with her parents, Steve and Mary (Taufer) Bendish. The family settled in the Fort Rice area and Mary was raised and educated in the Fort Rice and Fort Yates areas. As a young lady, she spent some time in St. Paul, Minn., working as a waitress. On Feb. 18, 1940, she married Anton Gartner in Fort Rice. After their marriage, they farmed in the Fort Rice area and later owned and operated the Ft. Rice Bar. She was very active as a sales representative for Stanley Home Products where she won numerous awards. She was instrumental in starting the Sacred Heart Center in Mandan. Mary published a book, "History of Ft. Rice" and copies are still available. She was an active member at her church. She was also known in the area for sharing her cooking and baking talents for many weddings and anniversaries. Mary is survived by threes sons and one daughter-in-law, Tony (Doris), Milpitas, Calif., George, Ft. Rice, and Joe, Superior, Wis.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Joe Lockner, Ft. Rice; and two sisters, Cathryn Howiatow and Josephine O'Neill, both of Ft. Rice. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Rosemary; four brothers, Frank, Steve, Julius, John and two sisters, Rose, who died in Austria and Louise. Special thanks to Lennie and Rosemary Ciavarella, Irene Senn and two daughters-in-law, Kathy Heisler and Charlotte Gartner for their friendship and support. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Lloyd Neal Grosgebauer
Lloyd Neal Grosgebauer, 68, D'Iberville, Miss., and formerly of Mandan, died Nov. 4, 2000 in Biloxi, Miss. He is survived by one daughter, Dawn Bartolic, Riverton, Wyo.; one son, Robert, Lander, Wyo.; one sister, Donna Miller, Mandan; and one brother, Garland, Bismarck; and six grandchildren. Helen C. Peterson
WASHBURN -- Helen C. Peterson, 75, rural Washburn, died Nov. 3, 2000 near her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at First Lutheran Church, Washburn, with burial in Riverview Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Roger; one daughter, Cheryl Gillespie, Bismarck; one son, Neal, rural Washburn; three grandchildren; three sisters, Luella Petersen and Jennie Holtan, both of Washburn, and Evelyn Nelson, Denver, Colo.; and one brother, Randolph Granlie, Washburn. George Joseph Saltsman
George Joseph Saltsman, 76, Minot, died Nov. 3, 2000 in his home, following a lengthy illness with cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at All Saints Episcopal Church, Minot, burial in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot. Visitation will be from noon-8 p.m. Tuesday, at Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot. George Joseph Saltsman was born Dec. 22, 1923 in Maxbass, the son of George and Alice B. (Hirengen) Saltsman. The family moved to Williston, where graduated from high school in 1942. He then enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943, and was in six major and eight minor engagements in the South Pacific during World War II. He received his honorable discharge, and came to Minot, where he returned to his job with the Great Northern Railroad, after starting with them in 1942 as a fireman prior to the War. He had been an engineer since the early 1950's and continued in that capacity until 1984 (the last eight years as engineer with Amtrak) when retired. He was united in marriage to Mary Prisizney on Oct. 2, 1948 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. They made their home in Minot these past many years, except for a short time in Rugby from 1960-1964. George was active with the Democratic NPL in State and Local Government and served as a lobbyist, for the Engineer's Union in the 1950's and early 60's. George was also a real estate broker and had trained people they hired. He founded 4th Avenue Realty and worked for Owners Direct and Saltsman Realty throughout the years. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Minot. He was also a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge No. 822, Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 753, American Legion No. 26, and Elks Lodge No. 1089. He was also a longtime member of The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He was a leader in the establishment of the Railroad Museum of Minot, where he served the groups as their first president. He had received various awards and honors for his dedication and excellence and service to his community. He is survived by his wife, Mary, Minot; three sons, George Saltsman, Minot, William "Bill" Saltsman, Bismarck, and Craig Saltsman, Sturgis, S.D.; four grandchildren and one sister, Mary Cunningham, Chula Vista, Calif. Memorials are preferred to Railroad Museum or All Saints Episcopal Church, both of Minot.

Ruth Steinhouse
PETTIBONE -- Ruth Steinhouse, 83, Fairfax, Minn., and formerly of Pettibone, died Nov. 4, 2000 in a Fairfax nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at American Lutheran Church, Pettibone, with burial in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, Pettibone. She is survived by three daughters, Dorothy Patrick, Bismarck, Judy Steinhouse, Fargo, and Louise Kiecker, Fairfax; five grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, two great-grandsons and six step-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Allen Thompson, Winona, Minn. Betty J. Toman
Betty J. Toman, 68, Bismarck, died Nov. 5, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at McCabe United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be held at North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, Mandan. The family will be receiving friends from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Bismarck Funeral Home. Betty was born Aug. 27, 1932 in Strawberry Lake, Minn., the daughter of Michael and Elva (Johnson) Winter. She married Howard Toman on July 8, 1949 in White Earth, Minn. Betty loved spending summers at their cabin on Strawberry Lake where she grew up. She loved cooking, gardening and dabbling in antiques. Betty was an active member of McCabe United Methodist Church and was a past president of the Mrs. Jaycees Club. Betty was loved by many people and will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Howard; her daughters, Sherri Toman, Bismarck, Marilee Toman and fiancee Mark Harris, Bismarck; one son, Larry, Bismarck; grandson, Josh Wilson and wife Jackie, Fargo; her sisters, Shirley McCarty, Seattle, Wash., MarJo Birdsall, Florida, Ellie Dovre, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; and her brothers, Duane Winter, Hot Springs, S.D., Darrell Winter and Rodney Winter, both of Detroit Lakes. She is also survived by other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; one son, Steve; one brother, Don; her mother-in-law, Olga Toman and father-in-law, Charlie Toman.
