Rose Schlosser
DICKINSON -- Rose Schlosser, 82, Dickinson, died Oct. 6, 2000, in a Dickinson care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial at 1 p.m. Wednesday in St. Vincent's Cemetery, Mott. She is survived by one daughter, Jan Lewis, Littleton, Colo.; two sons, Bernie, Dickinson, and Rodney, Honolulu, Hawaii; two brothers, Marcel Melchior, Dickinson, and Frank Melchior, Richardton; two sisters, Della Forster, Richardton, and Florentine Boehm, Dickinson; and six grandchildren. Steve Schmidt
Steve Schmidt, 74, Bismarck, died Oct. 7, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at noon Tuesday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a rosary and vigil service will be said at 7 tonight. There will be no visitation at the church. Steve was born May 16, 1926, at Napoleon, the son of Michael and Genevieve (Goldade) Schmidt. He was raised and educated in the Napoleon area. On Oct. 11, 1949, Steve married Catherine Neigum in Braddock. They farmed in Braddock for three years, and in 1952, they moved to Bismarck. Steve worked for Western Steel and Plumbing for over 30 years, retiring in May of 1986. Steve enjoyed telling jokes, playing pinochle, gardening and bowling. He is survived by his wife, Catherine; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Robert and Debi Schmidt, and Ronald Schmidt, all of Bismarck; four daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Bruce Ellwein, Sandy and Alan Doffee, Sheila and Jeff Diede, and Stephanie and Aaron Vedquam, all of Bismarck; six grandchildren, April and her husband Jason Schmitt, Amy Doffee, Nathan and Kolby Ellwien, Amanda Diede and Logan Vedquam, all of Bismarck; two great-grandchildren, Brandee and Brooke Schmitt; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Tony and Ann, and Pete and Marie, all of Seattle, Andy and Joan, Braddock, John and Phyllis, and Eugene and Rita, all of Bismarck; one sister, Theresia Neigum, Bismarck; one brother-in-law, Russell Kiefer, Braddock; and many nieces and nephews. Steve was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother; two sons, Sebastian and Randy Schmidt; one granddaughter, Danyle Ellwein; one sister, Lorraine Kiefer; and one brother-in-law, Pete Neigum.

HEBRON -- Frank Schmidt, 87, Hebron, died Oct. 8, 2000, in the Glen Ullin nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Wednesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Hebron. Further arrangements are pending at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron.

Jane Gray Stewart
Jane Gray Stewart died Oct. 5, 2000, at her home of natural causes. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, 214 E. Thayer Ave., Bismarck, with the Rev. Jacob Kincaid officiating. Jane Gray Stewart is a name synonymous with the arts and theater throughout North Dakota. She was born in Granville, on Dec. 1, 1919, to William and Leone (Richards) Gray, and graduated from Granville High School. There she won oratorical contests, participated in plays and pursued a major in theater at Minot State Teachers College. After graduating she continued her studies at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., and in New York City at the NBC Radio Institute and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. While still in graduate school, she taught speech and directed live radio dramas at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. In the early 1950s she taught speech and drama at Minot State Teachers College. In 1955 she married Maurice Smith and they moved to Bismarck. He passed away in 1962. She resumed her teaching career in speech and theater at Bismarck Junior College in 1956, and retired in 1985. During her tenure at the college, Jane's energy and creativity produced plays and musicals renowned throughout North Dakota. Among her many awards were the Bismarck Junior College Distinguished Service Citation and the Minot State University Golden Award for her many contributions. A joyful marriage to Jack Stewart in 1970 ended with his untimely death in 1974. After retirement from BSC, she and Shirley Staiger formed Backstage, Inc., and produced and costumed many shows. Jane also directed her talents to community service and was well-known for involvement in the Miss North Dakota Pageants, Mental Health productions, Folkfest pageants and Sleepy Hollow. Her encouragement and direction inspired legions of young aspiring actors. Jane's continued support and mentoring of young people throughout their lives resulted in successful careers in and out of theater. Jane is survived by her nieces and their husbands from McHenry, Ill., Chris and Jeff Kacer, Lindsey and Rick Scheinert, and Kelly and Brian Riordan, and their son, Thomas; her sister-in-law, Sally McPike, Fort Myers, Fla.; her cousins, Priscilla and Jerry Wilson, Bismarck, Janice and Jack Block, Polson, Mont., Juanita Borick, Houston, Elaine Booth, Towner, and Melba and Harold Neuman, Fergus Falls, Minn.; her stepson and family, Mike and Connie Stewart, Brooke and Sheryl, Bismarck; her beloved, J.D.; many devoted friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Robert Gray; her husbands, Maurice Smith and Jack Stewart; and her stepdaughter, Barbara Stewart. Memorials can be made to the Bismarck State College Foundation, Minot State University, Sleepy Hollow Summer Theater or a charity of the donor's choice. (Boelter Funeral Home)

DICKINSON -- Cecelia Tuhy, 78, Dickinson, died Oct. 7, 2000, in her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Laudie; three daughters, Elaine Tuhy, St. Paul, Minn., Valeria Locket, Dickinson, and Laurene Buckmiller, St. Paul; four sons, Eugene, Allan and Dale, all of Dickinson, and Curtis, Rapid City, S.D.; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Mansvetus Steffan, James Steffan and Stanley Steffan, all of Dickinson; and three sisters, Mary Novotny, Dickinson, Hattie Haller, Eugene, Ore., and Dagmar Murphy, Dickinson. Mary Boehm
Mary Boehm, 86, New Hope, Minn., and formerly of McClusky, died Sept. 27, 2000 in a New Hope nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Holy Family Catholic Church, McClusky, with burial in the church cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Gerald, Minneapolis, and Bruce, Mayville; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; three brothers, William, Spokane, Wash., Fred, Mercer, and John, St. Paul, Minn.; and one sister, Ann, Lodi, Calif. Margaret Fitterer
Margaret Fitterer, 77, Bismarck, died Sept. 29, 2000 at her home after a battle of cancer. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Church of St. Anne, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Monday, and 9-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, both at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. There will be no visitation at the church. There will be a rosary and vigil service at 7 p.m. Monday evening at Eastgate Funeral Service. Margaret Schaff was born on April 24, 1923 in Rygate, Mont., the daughter of Adam and Veronica (Emter) Schaff. In 1925, she moved with her family to the St. Joseph's area, south of Glen Ullin. She attended school in Grant County. Margaret married Ralph Fitterer on Nov. 9, 1943. They lived on and farmed the Fitterer homestead. In 1981, they then moved to Bismarck. Margaret loved her family, cooking, gardening, dancing and playing cards. She was a member of St. Joseph's Christian Mothers and St. Anne's Circle. She is survived by her husband, Ralph; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Dale Fitterer, Fargo, and Sid and Michelle Fitterer, Bismarck; three daughters and one son-in-law, Kathy Kennedy, Bandera, Texas, Marilynn Tong, Devils Lake, and Debbie and Mark Gietzen, Bismarck; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Florentine and Kenneth Malsbury, Ann Hellman, Betty and Chris Hopfauf, Rose Francisco, Eve and Mike Francisco; five brothers and four sisters-in-law, Leo Schaff, Matt and Pauline Schaff, Mike and Helen Schaff, Domonic and Cyndy Schaff, and Lawrence and Sally Schaff. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Andrew and Anthony Schaff; one son, Leslie Fitterer; and one daughter-in-law, Camille Fitterer. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Orren William Fricke
Orren William Fricke, 63, Grandview, Wash. died Sept. 21, 2000 from a sudden cardiac arrest while under treatment for cancer. He was born in Baldwin, and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1953. He married Marmie Pauline Deegan on Sept. 5, 1959. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1961, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. He was a member of the Church of God Fellowship. Orren Fricke served his country, community, and church. He served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1957, stationed predominantly at Newfoundland. He served as Grandview City Councilman from 1988 to 1991 and as Port of Grandview Commissioner from 1992 to 1995. He served the church as a teacher and member of the board of directors. Orren Fricke practiced engineering for many years, initially working at Wright Water Engineers in Denver, Colorado. Early in his career, he became the public works director for the City of Coon Rapids, Minn. In 1978, he founded White Shield Associates in Grandview, Washington, providing civil engineering, surveying, and environmental services to clients in the Yakima Valley and throughout the Northwest. His interests were in municipal engineering, hydrology, and agricultural industry development, and serving his clients well. He enjoyed wine-making, traveling, friends, and his family. His greatest joy was sharing love with his family and seeing his numerous grandchildren born and grow. Survivors include his wife Marmie; his sons, Peter Fricke, Corvallis, Ore., Herbert Fricke, Lake Oswego, Ore., and Stuart Fricke, Grandview, Wash.; his daughters, Julie Finnigan, Sacramento, Calif., Jeanette Williams, Mabton, Wash., Laurel Cole, Santa Clara, Calif., and Leah Schubert, Seattle, Wash.; his brothers Neil and Pat of Bismarck, and Boyd, Reno, Nev.; his sisters Lola, Denver, Colo., Maxine, Jamestown, and 19 grandchildren. His sister Ann preceded him in death.

Hertha C. Gegelman
HALLIDAY -- Hertha C. Gegelman, 85, Halliday, died Sept. 29, 2000 in the Hazen hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Halliday, with burial in Halliday Cemetery. She is survived by three daughters, Gladys Skaare, Williston, Doris Hartsoch, Clarkburg, W.V., and Ruth Sailer, Beulah; two sons, Marvin and Fred, both of Halliday; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Hilda Boepple, Richardton, and Esther Wegner, Bismarck. Jerome B. Ketchum
BOWMAN -- Jerome B. Ketchum, 89, Bowman, died Sept. 30, 2000 in the Bowman hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Tuesday, at Krebsbach Funeral Home Chapel, Bowman, with burial in Bowman Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; one brother, Neil, Buffalo, S.D. Edna Steinwand, 82, Bismarck, died Sept. 30, 2000. Arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Ruth Vogel
Ruth Vogel, 79, died Sept. 28, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, at Church of St. Anne, with the Revs. Arnold Spain and John Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today, at Eastgate Funeral Service, with a rosary and vigil service held at 6 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. There will be no visitation at the church. Ruth Wanner was born March 4, 1921 on a farm south of Mercer to Christ and Christina (Bonnet) Wanner. She received her elementary education in the rural school. At the age of 16, Ruth moved to Bismarck, where she did housekeeping and worked at a hotel. Ruth moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where she and Anton were married on Oct. 22, 1941. They moved to Fallbrook, Calif., and later to San Diego, Calif. where Anton enlisted in the Navy. It was W.W.II times, and when he reported stateside, Ruth would join him wherever he was stationed along the west coast. While in Long Beach, she worked at Bethlehem Steel Shipyards. In San Diego, Ruth was employed with Consolidated Aircraft Co., and in Bremerton, Wash., at the Puget Sound Shipyard. After her husband's medical discharge in 1945, the couple moved back to Bismarck. Ruth enrolled at Bismarck Junior College, where she took courses in typing, business and bookkeeping. Ruth and Tony weren't only lifetime partners in marriage, but worked side by side as business partners for over 50 years. They owned and operated Vogel Plumbing and Heating, Vogel Landscaping, Vogel Construction and Vogel Real Estate, eventually operating under the name of Vogel Enterprises. Ruth was well known in the real estate and building circles. They built and owned the Bismarck Bowling Center, the Vogel Office Building, numerous apartment buildings (including two in Tempe, Ariz.) and were the first to build a high-security mini-storage complex in Bismarck. They owned real estate in Garrison, Glen Ullin, Washburn, Bismarck, Mandan, and in New Jersey, Arizona City, Mesa, and Tempe, Ariz. Ruth was responsible for the bookkeeping for all of their businesses and investments. She and Anton sold the business in 1995, after being in the rental business for 49 years. In 1977, they moved to Mesa, Ariz. for the winter months, where they built a house in Arthur Godfrey's Leisure World, a master planned community exclusive for senior citizens. Summer months found them back at their Bismarck condo. Ruth and Anton enjoyed going on cruises and traveling. They visited many foreign countries, most of the state and Mexico. She and her husband enjoyed their big family, and were very proud of their nine children and grandchildren and their accomplishments. Ruth was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Arizona. She worked on the St. Mary's Carnival Committee for 19 years. Ruth is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Anton L. Vogel, Montana, and Dr. Marcus and Donna Vogel, Bismarck; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Sharon and Dwight Wheeler, Bismarck, Murrietta and Robert Ginter, St. Louis, Mo., Karla Ann Fuehrer, Longmont, Colo., Debra and John Hernandez, Mesa, and Deana and Howard Vogel Goodman, Denver, Colo.; 18 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Theodore and Doris Wanner, Bismarck, and Herbert and Melvie Wanner, Minot; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Lillian and Reuben Bentz, Bismarck, Helen and Herbert Grosz, McClusky, and Marian Geigle, Anamoose; 11 nieces and nephews and many good friends. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Anton on March 14, 2000; her parents; her granddaughter, Kimberly Vogel; her brother, John Wanner; and her son-in-law, Clark Fuehrer. Ruth will be greatly missed by her family and friends. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)
