Daniel Leno, 76, Bismarck, died Jan. 20, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. James Sorenson officiating. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service. Further arrangements are pending.

Marian Frances Massey
CARSON -- Marian Frances Massey, 79, Carson, died Jan. 19, 2001, in a Fargo nursing home. A celebration of Marian's life will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Carson, with burial in Carson Cemetery. Marian was born at the family home near Carson on April 13, 1921, to Wilhelm and Ragna (Emerson) Hanson, the youngest of 10 children. She attended Thain elementary and high school. Marian married Lloyd Massey in July 1938. They farmed near Lark until retiring to Carson in the mid 1960s. Marian never lost her love for the farm and spent time there each day (weather permitting) until moving to the nursing home in July 1999. Family and friends benefitted each fall from her garden, especially the potatoes. Each fall she made many batches of lefsa to share and insisted the only good lefsa was made from her potatoes. She will be remembered by her numerous quilts and wagon wheel rugs she left behind. Marian was active in her church and served as enabler of the cluster group of Southwestern North Dakota Presbytery and several terms as an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Carson. She was also active in the Presbyterian Women and other church activities. Marian served many years as the chairperson of the Carson Cemetery Board. She was a member of the Women's Community Bible Study and served as a 4-H leader and volunteer. Marian is survived by her daughter, Doris Hertsgaard, Fargo; her son and daughter-in-law, William and Gail Massey, Dickinson; five grandchildren and their spouses, Beth and Pat Ingram, Iowa City, Iowa, Merry and Jim Northenscold, Mankato, MInn., Becky and Brian Lakeman, Blaine, Minn., Susan and Jason Sickler, Houston, Texas, and Mitch Massey, Dickinson; three sisters-in-law, Helen Hanson, Carson, Helen Ozbun and Eleanor Buchholz, Dickinson; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The family prefers memorials to Carson Cemetery Board, First Presbyterian Church of Carson, or Bethany Homes, Fargo. (Hertz Brothers Funeral Home, New Leipzig)

Robert J. Nordstrom
Robert J. Nordstrom, 78, Bismarck, died Jan. 17, 2001, in a local hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Lisa Ahlness officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Baldwin Cemetery, Baldwin. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Robert John Nordstrom was born Feb. 9, 1922, at Bismarck, to John and Nellie (Peterson) Nordstrom. He was raised and educated in Bismarck, graduating from Bismarck High School in 1940. He then moved to Portland, Ore., where he worked in a defense plant until he entered the U.S. Army on Jan. 27, 1943. He spent three years in the Army; two years in China, Burma, India Theater. He was discharged on Jan. 27, 1946, and returned to Bismarck, where he worked construction. On March 4, 1947, he married Florence Wessel in Bismarck. He worked for the North Dakota State Park Service for 19 years. He was a member of the Capitol City Coin Club and the Three Crowns Society. He is survived by his wife, Florence; his children and their spouses, Ronald and Susan, Spring Hill, Fla., Dr. Donald and Penny, Sioux Falls, S.D., Dr. Robert and Joan, Bismarck, David, Bismarck, James and Bernice, Overland Park, Kan., and Dr. Kathleen and James Breidenbach, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Lisa, Nicholas, Marin, Leah, Thomas, Amie, Amanda and Richard Nordstrom; two step-grandchildren, Andy and his wife, Erin McDannold and Raina McDannold; his mother-in-law, Ida Wessel; four sisters, Viola Kline, Winchester, Va., Emy Beardsley, Olympia, Wash., Anna Mae Haas, Elgin, and Mary Weixel, West Fargo; and two brothers, Norman Nordstrom, Deerwood, Minn., and Gilbert Nordstrom, Bismarck. He was preceded in death by one brother, Henry Nordstrom, and one sister, Rose Marie Alton.

Norman O'Neil
KILLDEER -- Norman O'Neil, 77, Killdeer, died Jan. 19, 2001, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Killdeer, with burial in Oakdale Cemetery, Killdeer. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; two sons, Casey, Beulah, and Charlie, Gladstone; two daughters, Tracey Dolezal, Killdeer, and Kelley Dukart, Manning; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Maureen Graden, Flasher; one brother, Owen, Killdeer. Mavis I. Olson
Mavis I. Olson, 72, Bismarck, died Jan. 16, 2001, in her home of natural causes. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bismarck, with the Rev. Jeff Tengesdal officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service. Mavis was born Jan. 6, 1929, on the family homestead in Oliver Township, to Nels and Ragna (Stordalen) Wrolstad. She was united in marriage to William E. Milner in 1952, in Williston. Five children were born, Richard, Robert, William, Diane and Rod. Mr. Milner passed away in 1963. On Aug. 20, 1966, she married Robert W. Olson at Sentinel Butte. They ranched there and inthe Dickinson area until 1975, when they moved to Bismarck. Mr. Olson passed away in 1983. Mavis was an extraordinary cook with recipes that could not be duplicated because it was a little of this and a little of that. She operated Mavis' Lunch at Greene Drug Store in Dickinson and cooked at the State Line Club west of Williston. She was an avid Vikings and Wizards fan and loved golfing, fishing, bowling and horseshoes. She especially enjoyed her "buddies" at Brush Lake. She was the first woman inducted into the State Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame in1998. She headed the second largest junior horseshoe league in the United States. She was also a member of American Legion, VFW and Women of the Moose. She is survived by her five children, Robert and his wife Jane, and their children Kylee, Courtney and Taylor, Dickinson, Robert's former wife, Sandy, South Dakota and their son, Chris, Dickinson, Richard and his wife, Fran and children, Derek and Zack, Lincoln, William, Phoenix, Ariz., and Diane and Rod, both of Bismarck; two sisters, Dora Farver and Stella Anderson, both of Williston; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Wrolstad, Phoenix, and Clemmie Wrolstad, East Boga, Ala.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; and many close and personal friends. She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; and seven brothers, Melvin, Olaf, Roy, Elmer, Chester, Obert and Orville.

Henry J. Sadowsky
DICKINSON -- Henry J. Sadowsky, 78, Dickinson, died Jan. 20, 2001, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.

Caroline Schaff
Caroline Schaff, 81, Bismarck, died Jan. 19, 2001, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Church of the Ascension, Bismarck, with the Rev. Marvin Klemmer officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will begin at 7:30 tonight, followed by a parish rosary at 8. Caroline was born Jan. 2, 1920, in St. Anthony, the youngest of 13 children, to George T. and Aqualina (Leingang) Wetsch. She was raised and educated in the St. Anthony area. On Nov. 24, 1941, she married Frank G. Schaff in St. Anthony. After their marriage, they moved to Solen, where they both farmed. Amongst her interests, Caroline enjoyed quilting, craftwork, gardening and baking. Her love for her family will always be remembered. She is survived by three sons, Edward, Bismarck, Al, Fargo, and Lawrence, Grand Forks; one daughter, Doris Schaff, Bismarck; one brother, Clemens Wetsch, Minot; and one sister, Margaret Gangl, St. Anthony. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, who died in March 1991; one son, Eugene, who died in January 1991; three brothers; and seven sisters. The family prefers memorials be given to the Bismarck Baptist Nursing Home.

Don Sletto
DICKINSON -- Don Sletto, 56, Dickinson, died Jan. 19, 2001, in a Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Tuesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Thomas O. Smith
Thomas "Tom" O. Smith, 56, Bismarck, died peacefully at home on Jan. 18, 2001, after a very short battle with cancer. Tom was surrouned by his family until the end. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 1-6 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service. There will be a prayer service at 7 tonight at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. Tom was born Feb. 14, 1944, the son of Geneva and Irvin A. Smith II in Bismarck. He attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1962. He continued his education at Concordia College, Bismarck State College, Redlands University in California, and graduated from North Dakota State University in 1966, with a double major in mathematics and English. Tom graduated with a law degree from University of North Dakota in 1969. Hemet Sharon Reak from Minneapolis, on a blind date in the summer of 1966, and proposed to her three months later. They were married within a year on Aug. 5, 1967. Their relationship was a lifelong friendship filled with love. From 1969 to 1977, Tom's work was divided between the North Dakota State Land Department, the North Dakota Insurance Department, and private practice. He served as in-house counsel to Pioneer Mutual Life Insurance Company in Fargo, from 1977-1978. He joined the Zuger and Bucklin Law Firm, presently known as Zuger Kirmis and Smith, in 1978 as an associate. In 1980, he became partner. He was active in the management of the firm throughout his career there. Tom specialized in civil litigation representing insured's in tort claims, representing insurance companies on coverage issues, including bad faith; and representation of insurance industry on administrative proceedings and legislation. He was the state retained counsel for the North Dakota Domestic Insurance Companies and North Dakota Grain Dealers Association. In addition, he was the government affairs representative for the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroads, et al. Tom was a lobbyist for over 20 years. He wasn known for his honest, straightforward manner and for always being prepared. Politics were of great interest to him, and he enjoyed discussing many a strategy with his friends over a morning cup of coffee. In addition, he authored several articles on state land and insurance laws, lectured on numerous insurance issues, and taught business law at both Mary College and Capitol Commercial College. He loved the law, and felt privileged to practice it. The legal community regarded Tom as a fair and knowledgeable attorney and he was greatly respected by his friends and colleagues. Tom was an active member of the State Bar Association of North Dakota, American Bar Association, Big Muddy Bar Association, Defense Research Institute, North Dakota Defense Lawyers Association, Bismarck-Mandan Elks Lodge 1199, and the Riverwood Men's Golf Association. Tom enjoyed his work, but his true passion was golf. Weather permitting, he could be found on the links of local golf courses, most often Riverwood. Through the game of golf, he truly found both joy and frustration. Tom is survived by his wife of 33 years, Sharon; his three daughters and two sons-in-law, Stephanie and Michael Frank, Maple Grove, Minn., Christine and Jed Benson, New Brighton, Minn., and Melissa Smith, Bismarck. Also surviving Tom are his two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph and Louella Smith, and Irvin A. and Marsha Smith III, all of Bismarck; as well as Sharon's brother, Laurence Reak, Houston, Texas; sister, Jan Reak, St. Louis Park, Minn.; sister and brother-in-law, Jeanne and Dan Super, New Hope, Minn.; and brother and sister-in-law, Patrick and Teri Reak, Plymouth, Minn.; plus many beloved nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. His parents, Irvin II and Geneva Smith, and Sharon's parents, Laurence and Dorothy Reak, preceded him in death. The family prefers memorials to the Hospice at Medcenter One or the American Cancer Society.

Frank Weisgerber
Frank Weisgerber, 80, Bismarck, died Jan. 19, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, rural Mandan. Frank was born Nov. 5, 1920, in Bismarck, the son of Joseph and Amelia (Boesflug) Weisgerber. He was raised and educated in Bismarck, graduating from St. Mary's High School in 1938. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the Southeast Pacific Theatre as a platoon sergeant with the 251st Army Hospital. Following his honorable discharge in 1945, he returned to Bismarck. Frank married Ardell Davison on Feb. 12, 1949, in Bismarck. He enlisted in the North Dakota Army National Guard and was called to active service during the Korean Conflict. During this period, he served as assistant adjutant in the 164th Infantry Regiment. He returned to North Dakota Army National Guard in 1952. Frank continued his career with the National Guard and was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer in 1965. He retired from military service on Nov. 4, 1980, and for his outstanding record of achievement in the field of personnel administration, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. Frank is survived by his wife, Ardell; two daughters, Mary Weisgerber, Mandan, and Linda Weisgerber, Bismarck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Gail Weisgerber, and Mark and Julie Weisgerber, all of Portland, Ore.; four grandchildren, Michael, Kimberly, Rebecca and Jennifer; two sisters, Monica McCrorie, Boise, Idaho, and Catherine Kucera, Bismarck; and two brothers, John Weisgerber, Bismarck, and Robert Weisgerber, Seattle. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Matthew Weisgerber.

Myrtle Weros, 91, Harvey, died Jan. 20, 2001, in the Harvey nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Anna Anderson

BEULAH -- Emerald N. Danks, 3, daughter of Claude and Bonnie Danks, Beulah, died Jan. 19, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Four Bears Community Center, rural New Town. Burial will be in Shell Creek Cemetery, rural New Town. She is survived by her parents; two brothers, Michael DuBray and Maurice Danks; and her grandparents, Inez Plenty Chief, and Maurice and Cynthia Danks, all of New Town, and Jerry and Carmen Chase, Eagle Butte, S.D.
