Violet “Vi” Fritz
Funeral services for Violet “Vi” K. Fritz, 94, Fargo (formerly Enderlin), were held on Friday, November 29, 2002 at St. John Lutheran Church, Fargo. Mrs. Fritz died on Sunday, November 24, 2002 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Violet Kathryn Utke, daughter of Emil and Kathrina (Schmidt) Utke, was born July 11, 1908 in Alice. She had six brothers and sisters. Vy attended school in Alice until she was in the second grade when her family moved to north Fargo where she completed grade school at the little red school house. She graduated from Concordia Academy High School in 1926. She attended beauty school to be a hairdresser following high school. She worked at Rush’s Permanent Wave Shop and Black’s Beauty Shop.
On June 30, 1937, she married Ray Fritz. They lived in Enderlin and operated Fritz Truck Lines. They were agents for Lyons Moving Co. for the furniture moving part of their business. Ray and Vy were active members of the North Dakota Motor Carriers. They had a lake cottage on Dead Lake in Minnesota in 1947. In 1966, the built a new cottage on West Silent Lake. Ray died on March 10, 1985. In 1990, Vy moved to Riverview Place in Fargo and has resided there since. She is a member of St. John Lutheran Church. She transferred from Trinity Lutheran Church in Enderlin where she was an active member in WELCA.
She is survived by her sons, Roger (Bonnie) Fritz, Fargo, Lyle (Rosalie) Fritz, Fargo, and Glen (Karen) Fritz, Frankfort, S.D.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray Fritz; four brothers and two sisters.
Interment at Riverside Mausoleum, Fargo.

Phyllis J. Abell
Funeral services for Phyllis Jean Abell, 71, Fergus Falls, Minn., were held on Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at First Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls. Reverend Amy Larson and Reverend Jim Tonneson officiated. Mrs. Abell died on Friday, November 22, 2002 at Lake Region Hospital, Fergus Falls.
Phyllis Jean Ruud, daughter of Olaf and Hazel (Aust) Ruud, was born July 15, 1931 in Nome, N.D. After graduating from Nome High School, she taught full time at several area schools, including the Green School, Sheldon and Lucca. While she was teaching, she attended night and summer college classes. She earned her Bachelors of Education degree from Valley City State Teachers College. While teaching in Breckenridge, Minn., she went on to receive her Masters of Education from Moorhead State College.
On July 30, 1971, she married Arlin Abell in Breckenridge, Minn. She became an instant mother to three daughters that Arlin brought to the marriage. The couple lived in Breckenridge where Phyllis spent 32 years teaching. She retired from teaching in 1991. In 1992, the couple retired to Pickeral Lake. After the death of Arlin in 2001, Phyllis moved to Fergus Falls. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls. She belonged to the Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by three daughters, Michelle Abell, Eagle Point, Ore., Lisa (Paul) Christensen, Sidney, Mont., and Catherine (Eddie) Castillo, Weslaco, Tex.; six grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Ruud, Nome; one sister-in-law, Rose Ruud, Fargo; one brother-in-law, William Groskreutz, Superior, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arlin Abell; one brother, Arnold Ruud; and two sisters, Carol and Lorraine Ruud.
Interment at Riverside Cemetery, Campbell, Minn.

Virginia H. Olerud
Funeral services for Virginia H. Olerud, 73, McLeod, were held on Saturday, February 1 at Bethany Lutheran Church, McLeod. Reverend Wayne Quibell officiated. Mrs. Olerud died January 28, 2003 at Lisbon Health Services, under Hospice care.
Virginia Sagvold, daughter of Arthur and Clara (Hauge) Sagvold was born on November 25, 1929 in Enderlin. She attended school in McLeod and Lisbon.
On December 11, 1949, she married Ilef Olerud in Lisbon. They ranched near McLeod. Virginia was a Special Education Driver, also a member of Bethany WELCA, a charter member of Hauge Memorial VFW Auxiliary, and served as 9th District Commander. She had been clerk of McLeod School for many years, taught Sunday School, was a member of Sheyenne Arts and Crafts and N.D. Cattle Women.
She is survived by her husband Ilef Olerud, McLeod; two sons, Neil (Laurie) Olerud, McLeod and Scott (Cathy) Olerud, McLeod; three daughters Peggy (Darrell) McMahon, St. Joseph, Mo., Ginger (Bob) Louden, Lisbon, and Teri (Ron) Pister, St. Joseph, Mo; 15 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, Daryl (Marlys) Sagvold, McLeod and James Sagvold, Sheldon; three sisters, Doreen Trietline, Hankinson, Annabelle (Harry) Hakanson, McLeod, and Marie (James) Sullivan, Redding, Calif. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marvella and LaMae Anderson.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Jade McMahon, Bill Louden, Benjamin Pister, Elliott Olerud, Matt Bunker, Jerry Olerud, Wesley Sagvold, Bruce Hakanson, and Todd Sagvold.
Music was provided by organist DeLoris Haugen, pianist, Bill Louden and soloists Pastor and Mrs. Wayne Quibell.

Gladys M. Rintoul
Funeral services for Gladys M. Rintoul, 89, Valley City, were held on Friday, January 31, 2003 at Faith Lutheran Church, Valley City. Reverend Thomas Peterson officiated. Mrs. Rintoul died Monday, January 27, 2003 at the Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City.
Gladys M. Simpson, daughter of John and Alice (Wangrud) Simpson was born on February 2, 1913 in Litchville.
On October 1, 1938, she married Glenn Maxwell Rintoul in Valley City. They lived in Valley City and then farmed near Litchville. They operated a store in Kathryn and she cooked at the Kathryn School. After returning to Valley City she worked at the JC Penney Company and retired after many years of service at the Valley City store. She was a long time member of Faith Lutheran Church, Valley City. Mr. Rintoul died June 5, 1973.
She is survived by on son, Wayne Rintoul, Gilroy, Calif; two daughters, Mary (Melvin) Kuehn, Willard, Wis. and JoAnn Leidall, Ocala, Fla.; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and two sisters, Avis Salzsieder, Lisbon and Amy Pinson, San Lorenzo, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and two sisters.
Interment at Memory Gardens near Valley City in the spring.

Arlene E. Rufsvold
Funeral services for Arlene E. Rufsvold, 73, LaMoure, were held on Thursday, January 30, 2003, at Zoar Lutheran Church, LaMoure. Reverend John Estrem officiated. Mrs. Rufsvold died on Sunday, January 26, 2003 at her home in LaMoure.
Arlene E. Rasmusson, daughter of Edward N. and Astrid K. (Hanson) Rasmusson, was born May 22, 1929 in rural Fort Ransom. She attended rural Fort Ransom School, Verona High School and Valley City State University.
On July 24, 1949, she married Arnold Rufsvold in Fort Ransom. She taught school in Englevale. They lived in Englevale and Fargo before returning to Elliott in 1951. She taught in Englevale, rural Elliott, Elliott and Lisbon. In 1967, they moved to LaMoure where she taught until retiring in 1993. She taught Sunday School in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Elliott.
She is survived by her husband, Arnold Rufsvold, LaMoure; three sons, Jim Rufsvold, LaMoure, Greg (Jonelle) Rufsvold, Baraboo, Wis., and David (Lori) Rufsvold, Halstad, Minn.; one daughter, Linda (John) Grindeland, Austin, Minn; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Jerome (Hazel) Rasmusson, LaMoure, Ronald (Shirley) Rasmusson, Waterford, Wis., and Edward (Connie) Rasmusson, Jr., Muskego, Wis.; three sisters, Maxine (Calvin) Shockman, LaMoure, Beverly (Marvin) Mart, LaMoure, and Joyce (William) Coit, Englevale. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Arnold Rufsvold, Jr.; and three brothers, Donald, Curtis and Alden Rasmusson.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Jeremy Rufsvold, Kyle Rufsvold, Jordan Rufsvold, Michael Rufsvold, Jill Rufsvold, Shanna Rufsvold, Leslie Miller and Deb Grindeland. Honorary pallbearers were Payton Rufsvold, Paige Rufsvold, Elle Rufsvold and Calvin Miller.
Music was provided by organist Loretta Rasmusson and soloist Gwen Thielges.
Interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon.

Dorothy A. Voigt
Funeral services for Dorothy A. Voigt, 70, Rhame, N.D., were held on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 at First Lutheran Church, Rhame. Reverend Jerry Erickson officiated. Mrs. Voigt died on Saturday, January 25, 2003 at Med Center One, Bismarck.
Dorothy A. Alexander, daughter of L.E. “Doc” and Ethel (Lang) Alexander, was born June 20, 1932 in Slope County, Amidon, N.D. She was raised north of Bowman and attended Slope Center School and Graduated from Bowman High School in 1950. She attended college at Dickinson State College for a rural teachers’ course.
On August 24, 1951, she married Clair Voigt. They made their home south of Rhame on the Emanuel and Pearl Voigt farm. She taught school south of Rhame and at Karinen, S.D. In 1960, Dorothy moved with her husband, children and younger sister to wahpeton. She continued to teach and earned her degree in special education from Moorhead State University.
She is survived by her husband, Clair Voigt, Rhame, N.D.; one son, Brent (Wanda) Voigt, Rhame; one daughter, Nadine (Virgil) Olson, Fort Ransom; two grandchildren; one sister, Gail (Pat) Melcher, Laurel, Mont.; one brother, Robert Alexander, Fargo; and one sister-in-law, Shirley Alexander, Tempe, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Phil Alexander; and three sisters, Fern Spethman, June Wahl and Doris Egeland.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Neal Wahl, Craig Egeland, Pat Lorge, Allan Wallman, Marvin Braaten and Clayton Wallman. Honorary pallbearers were friends and neighbors.
Special music was provided by The Wagoneers.
Interment at Bethany Cemetery, south of Rhame.

Barbara Berg
Funeral services for Barbara Berg, 60, Hillsboro, were held on Thursday, January 30, 2003 at Hillsboro United Parish UCC-UMC in Hillsboro. Mrs. Berg died on Sunday, January 26, 2003 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Barbara Power, daughter of Robert and Evelyn (Gotfredsen) Power, was born April 10, 1942 in Hunter, N.D. She grew up in Hunter and graduated from Hunter High School. After her schooling, Barb worked in Fargo for a family providing day care.
On March 19, 1966, she married Raymond Berg in Hawley, Minn. They made their home in Hillsboro where they raised their family. She was a very active member of the HIllsboro United Parish working with the women’s groups and the ladies’ circles.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond Berg, Hillsboro; three daughters, Sharlene Rohrich, West Fargo, Sherry (Jesse) Ford, West Fargo, and Stacy (Scott) Bauer, Bismarck; one son, Steven Berg, Fargo; five grandchildren; three brothers, Bernie (Sandy) Power, Williston, Robert Power, Tucson, Ariz., and Rob (Diana) Power, Portland, N.D.; two sisters, Marge (Ray) Fuss, Gwinner, and Ruth Power, Barnesville, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Roger Power.
Interment at Riverside Cemetery, Hillsboro.
