Katharina Alma Thurn
WISHEK -- Katharina Alma Thurn, 99, Wishek, died Feb. 10, 2001, in the Wishek nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Wishek, with burial in St. Andrew's Lutheran Cemetery, rural Zeeland. She is survived by four grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six sisters, Magdalena Buechler, Bowdle, S.D., Esther Kurle, Aberdeen, S.D., Clara McGregor, Aberdeen, Lea Blind, Bermerton, Wash., Christine Rowlen, Kingsville, Mo., and Irene Rutschke, Almeda, Calif. Magdalena Burckhard
Magdalena "Maggie" Burckhard, 92, Bismarck, died Feb. 10, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at noon Wednesday at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a Catholic Daughters rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a vigil service at 7:30. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. Magdalena Wolf was born Oct. 5, 1908, at St. Michael's Community, Emmons County, the daughter of Adam and Magdalena (Wickenheiser) Wolf. She grew up on a farm near Strasburg and attended St. Benedict School in Strasburg. Maggie married Carl Burckhard on Nov. 18, 1930. They lived on a farm for a brief period before moving to Linton where she worked at the Willow's Hotel for $5 per week. Maggie and Carl lived for a time in Beach, and then moved to Bismarck in 1941. She worked at F.W. Woolworth Co. and A.W. Lucas Co. as a clerk. She was well known for her sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidery and other crafts. She was sought after as a partner for bridge, pinochle and whist. Maggie was a walking encyclopedia for the history of the German Russian people in south central North Dakota. She remembered dates, events, and relationships in the lives of many people. Maggie was a member of Catholic Daughters of America for over 50 years. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Aid Society in Strasburg, St. Mary's Church Altar Society in Bismarck, and St. Anne's Guild in Bismarck. She is survived by five brothers and sisters-in-law, Iggie and Agnes, Salem, Ore., John and Lillian, Sun City, Calif., Mike and Theresa, Strasburg, Joe and Betty, Spokane, Wash., and Al and Karen, Bismarck; one sister, Christine Wolf, Bismarck; and three sisters-in-law, Agatha Wolf and Frances Burckhard, both of Bismarck, and Christine Feist, Linton. There are too many nephews and nieces to name, but she loved all of them and kept track of their families as the generations multiplied. She also leaves behind many cousins and friends made while living at Marillac Manor. Maggie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; two brothers, Tony and Peter; and two sisters, Barbara Bantz and Phyllis McNeil. Memorials can be sent to St. Alexius Hospice Program or the McNeil-Wolf Scholarship Fund at St. Mary's Central High School in Bismarck.

John Davis
MINOT -- John Davis, 93, Minot, died Feb. 10, 2001, in a Minot healthcare center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Immanuel Baptist Church, Minot. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot. He is survived by his wife, Florence; one daughter, Darlene Quick, Fremont, Calif.; one grandson, Troy Quick, Fremont; one great-grandson, Travis Quick, Fremont; one stepdaughter, Beverly Krause Ehlinger, Priest Lake, Idaho; six half-brothers, Gus, Matt, Steve, Lonnie and Mike Tachenko, all of Grassy Butte; and two half-sisters, Ann Holbrook, Calif., and Leone Quast, Beach. Kester Decker
Kester "Casey" Decker, 58, Belfield, died Feb. 11, 2001, in a Dickinson health center after a lengthy illness. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Belfield, with the Rev. Thomas Richter officiating. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Belfield. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. MST today at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Kester Allen Decker was born May 29, 1942, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Dickinson to Adam and Patricia (Hibl) Decker. As a young boy he attended Belfield Public Grade School and graduated from Belfield High School in 1960. Casey received his B.S. degree from Dickinson State University in 1964. Kester taught high school in New England for three years and spent 28 years teaching for the Department of Defense Dependent School. He spent seven years in Japan, 12 years in Germany, nine years in Bermuda and taught as a substitute teacher in Belfield. He traveled to 30 different countries. Kester married Sharon Roller May 1, 1987, in Stella Maris Catholic Church, St. George, Bermuda. Kester's hobbies were playing cards, socializing with friends, driving through the countryside, reading, gardening, sports, hunting, fishing, coaching, collecting clocks, listening to polkas and waltzes and antique cars and tractors. He loved teaching children, telling stories and making wine, sausage and beef jerky. He is survived by his wife, Sharon, Belfield; his mother, Patricia Decker, Belfield; one brother, Ken, Sheridan, Wyo.; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Kay and Jerry Iverson, Spicer, Minn., Pat Decker and Ken Hunkins, Hilsboro, Ore., Rosanna and Roger Smith, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Sheila and Steve Akason, Fargo; his mother-in-law, Balbina Roller, Belfield; five brothers-in-law, Duane (Charlotte) Roller, Edward (Brenda) Roller, and Lee Roy (Jolynn) Roller, all of Belfield, Alan Roller, Williston, and Ralph (Mary) Roller, Pick City; five sisters-in-law, Mary Lou (Leo) Schneider, Georgian (Ray) Heck, and Ida (Kevin) Hushka, all of Belfield, Bernice (Mayland) Arrington, New England, and Elaine Roller, Broadus, Mont.; 33 nieces and nephews; and 10 great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Adam; one nephew, Paine Schmitz; his paternal grandparents, Christian and Anna Marie Decker; his maternal grandparents, Anton and Annie Hibl; and five aunts. Virginia Gludt
Virginia Gludt, 82, Bismarck, died Feb. 10, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be held in the spring in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service. Virginia was born Oct. 18, 1918, at Park Falls, Wisc., the daughter of Adolphus and Elizabeth (Robarge) Perry. She was raised in Park Falls, where she was educated and graduated from high school in 1936. Virginia lived in Detroit and Philadelphia and was married to Stephen Burns. From this union they had a son, Michael. Stephen died shortly after and Virginia moved to Harvey to live with her sister Dorothy. Virginia married Maurice Gludt Oct. 16, 1948, in Harvey. They had two daughters. They continued living in Harvey where she worked at J.C. Penney and St. Aloisius Hospital. In 1988 they moved to Bismarck. Virginia entered the Baptist Home in 1999. She is survived by her husband, Maurice; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Pat Burns, Salem, Ore.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Elizabeth (Betsy) and Gary Tipton, Belgrade, Mont., and Catherine (Cathi) Jackson, Bismarck; her grandsons, Brian and Dawn Tipton, Daniel and Jennifer Tipton, and Christopher Tipton; and one great-grandson, Kaleb Tipton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; four brothers; and four sisters.

Bernice Heisler
MINOT -- Bernice Heisler, 78, Minot, formerly of Harvey, died Feb. 11, 2001, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Harvey. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She is survived by three sons, Donald, Ottertail, Minn., Marvin, Verges, Minn., and Ronald, Minot; one daughter, Lorraine Deck, Minot; four sisters, Sophia Goebel, Williston, Regina Will, Hazelton, and Perry Masset and Lucy Noel, both of Linton; two brothers, Victor Bachmeier, Pinehurst, Idaho, and Ben Bachmeier, Smelterville, Idaho; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Eva Ann Hertz
Eva Ann Hertz, 99, Mandan, died Feb. 9, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughters rosary will be said at 4 p.m. A parish vigil, followed by a rosary, will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon at Weigel Funeral Home, and will continue at the church from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Eva (Meuchel) Hertz was born May 7, 1901, in Glen Ullin, the daughter of George and Paulina (Froelich) Meuchel. Eva was raised and educated in rural St. Joseph, south of Glen Ullin. She married Philip Hertz Aug. 2, 1920, in Glen Ullin. They moved to Mandan in 1924 where they owned and operated Phil's Place. Phil died in 1971 and Eva remained in Mandan until 1999, when she became a resident at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. Eva was a member of St. Joseph Church, Elks and Catholic Daughters. Eva had a wonderful laugh and smile, which she shared with all. She loved to play pinochle. Her other talents included dancing, especially the polka, gardening, flowers, sewing and cooking for family and friends. She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Evelyn Hankins, Casper, Wyo., and Gloria and William Sullivan, Wheaton, Ill.; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, D'Arlyn and Dan Bauer and their children Nathaniel and Obediah, Annette McDowell and her daughter Jennifer, Philip and LeOnda Hankins and their children Rachel and Nichole, Jason Hankins, Jeanine and Ed Ness and their children Dax and Garrett, David and Julie Hankins and their children Andrew and Matthew, Bryan Sullivan, Valerie Ann and Hans Lim, and Kennan Sullivan; and two sisters, Lena Metz and Pauline Gray.

Roy Jorstad
NEW ENGLAND -- Roy Jorstad, 89, New England, died Feb. 12, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Friday at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, New England. Further arrangements are pending with Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

John C. Kaelberer
NEW SALEM -- John C. Kaelberer, 91, New Salem, died Feb. 11, 2001, in the New Salem nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Loren Strum officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. MST today at Elm Crest Manor, New Salem, and from 3 to 6 p.m. at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem, where a family service will be held at 7 p.m. John was born Nov. 7, 1909, at the family farm south of New Salem to Gustav and Pauline (Rock) Kaelberer. John married Esther Henke on Oct. 25, 1936. John was active in the community, serving on the Columbia and New Salem school boards, was a director of Morton-Oliver Insurance Company, held several offices at Zion Lutheran Church and was a member of both the church and community choir. John was meticulous in his work. He loved the challenge of fixing things and inventing better ways to do things. He still has two patents registered. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Most pictures of John involve a stringer full of fish and a big smile. He is survived by his wife, Esther; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Marianne, Reedpoint, Mont., and Kelly and Robin, New Salem; two daughters and sons-in-law, Harriet and Herb Henke, Hannover, and Barb and Doug Kautzman, Bismarck; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Edna Kaelberer. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Charlie, Theodore, Erhardt and Reinhard; three sisters-in-law, Erna, Selma and Helen; two sisters, Pauline Benishek and Tillie Wirtzfeld; and two brothers-in-law, Charles Benishek and Bill Wirtzfeld.

Ryan Robert Richard Kellam
Ryan Robert Richard Kellam, 23, Moorhead, Minn., died Feb. 10, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Todd Hylden officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Steele. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and until time of service Friday at Perry Funeral Home. Ryan was born Oct. 17, 1977, in Bismarck, the son of Robert Mont and Sherry Dianne (Fricke) Kellam. He attended Moorhead schools, graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, Fargo, in 1996. He worked for K&L Construction, Moorhead. He is survived by his parents, Robert and Sherry Kellam, Fargo; one brother, Patrick, Jamestown; one sister and brother-in-law, Michelle Kellam and Jeremy Klinger, Fargo; one daughter, Caitlyn Marie and her mother, Leslie Grove, Fargo; his grandmothers, Flora Mae Kellam and Florence Fricke, both of Bismarck; and extended immediate family, John and Sandy Fricke, Sharon and Keith Lipp, Paul and Wanda Kellam, and Rick and Tammy Kellam, all of Bismarck, Peg and Dennis Hoge, Las Vegas, Nev., Steven and Marlene Fricke, Center, Laurie and Randy Rudolph, Portsmouth, N.H., Peg and Jerry Dubord, Eden Prairie, Minn., Patti and John Thompson, Robinson; and many cousins in various locations. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Robert Kellam and Richard Fricke.

Ernest Lang
Ernest "Duke" Lang, 76, Bismarck, formerly of McKenzie, died Feb. 11, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, Sterling, with the Rev. Jim Cissell officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Duke was born Sept. 1, 1924, in Bismarck, the son of Emil and Zella (Mueller) Lang. He was raised and educated in Sterling. In January 1945 he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Pacific theatre during World War II. He was discharged in 1946 and returned to Sterling. On Jun 7, 1948, he married Rosemary Kenny in Bismarck. Following their marriage they moved to a farm north of McKenzie, where they farmed and operated a small truck line. Rosemary died on November 22, 1979. Duke moved to Bismarck in 1987. He was a member of the VFW Post 1326 in Bismarck. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Neal Fisher, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Sharon Lang, McKenzie; three sisters, Mildred Lang, Pekin, Ill., Geraldine Lee, Jamestown, and Rosella Selland, Sterling; six grandchildren, Daniel, Sarah and Jennifer Lang, and Josh, Adrienne and Audra Fisher; and his best friend and companion, Ruby Moos. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Emil and Donald; and his wife, Rosemary.

Benny Left Hand
Benny Left Hand, 57, Kenel, S.D., died Feb. 10, 2001, in a fire at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Catholic Church of Assumption, Kenel. Further arrangements are pending with Kesling-Larson Funeral Home, Mobridge.

Marian Miller
Marian Miller, 72, Mandan, died Feb. 10, 2001, in a Bismarck care facility. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan. A parish vigil and rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Marian (Keller) Miller was born May 27, 1928, in Beulah, the daughter of Christ and Frances (Volk) Keller. She attended school in Beulah. Marian married Engelbert Miller Sept. 3, 1956, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck. Marian worked at the Mandan Villa as a housekeeper and was a cook at the Wooden Nickel Cafe and the Lewis and Clark Cafe in Mandan. Marian had a great sense of humor and was a great mother who always had time to listen. She enjoyed fishing, playing cards and loved going for walks. She also found great joy in her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Bert, Mandan; four sons and one daughter-in-law, Mark and Jodene, Bismarck, Harlon, Coperas Cove, Texas, and Kevin and Allen, Mandan; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marla and Dale Zimmerman, Washburn, and Gina and Tim Merkel, Bismarck; five grandchildren, Ron, Justin, Shaina, Levon and Matthew; one brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Marilyn Keller, Trenton, Mich.; and three sisters, Evangeline Fitzgerald and Eva Kottre, both of Bismarck, and Barbara Selby, Tampa, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents; and five sisters, Elizabeth Keller, Rose Miller, Irene Gross, Claudia Keller and Magdalena Heier.
