Ella Bucholz
Ella Bucholz, 76, Bismarck, died Feb. 16, 2001, in a local hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. James Sorenson officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Sunne Lutheran Cemetery, Wilton. Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Ella Freida Mertz was born Jan. 3, 1925, in the Goodrich area, the daughter of Leonard "Lee" and Rose Mertz. She attended rural schools in the Arena, Wing and Tuttle areas. She moved to Wilton with her family when she was in her teens. She worked at various places in Wilton and also at the State Capitol lunchroom and the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck. She married Melvin Bucholz Dec. 9, 1944, in Bismarck. Ella loved doing her jigsaw and crossword puzzles, writing in her diary, gardening and canning. Music was very important to her. Ella loved to play guitar, piano and harmonica, and she loved singing. She also took great care of all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her five great-grandchildren were truly her pride and joy. Ella lived for her family. She will be greatly loved and missed and will be with her family again some day. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Melvin; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharron and Ron Crowley, Hazen, and Sally and Edmond Reinhart, Bismarck; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Eldon, Strasburg, Robert and Linda, Bismarck, and Kelvin and Janeen, Rapid City, S.D.; ten grandchildren, Melissa, Michelle, Nicole, Kristen, Michael, Melanie, Andrea, John, Kelsey and Ashley; five great-grandchildren, Courtni, Jaci, Medora, Emmy and Corbin; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Ruth Deckert, Arena, and Evelyn and Joe Hruby, Wilton; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Leroy and Margaret Mertz, Bismarck, and Jim and Lois Mertz, Wilton. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Viola Martin and Jeanette Elichuck; and two brothers-in-law, Peter Elichuck and Bernard Deckert.

Ingel Deavy
HETTINGER -- Ingel Deavy, 98, Hettinger, died Feb. 15, 2001, in a Hettinger care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Tuesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hettinger. Burial will be in Hettinger Cemetery. She is survived by one son, Lawrence Schmidt, Hettinger; four daughters, Rose Heidt, Spokane, Wash., Helena Boxeth, Bowman, and Vita Kok and Isabelle Howe, both of Hettinger; 20 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Allene Flegel
Allene Flegel, 81, Sun City West, Ariz., died Feb. 9, 2001, in a Sun City West hospital. Services were held Feb. 14, 2001, at Sunland Memorial Mortuary, Sun City, Ariz. She is survived by her husband, Northern; one daughter, Judith Johanneson, Naples, Fla.; one son, Gregory, Surprise, Ariz.; three granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.

Louise Gorder
Louise Gorder, 87, Bismarck, died Feb. 17, 2001, in a Bismarck nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Bismarck Funeral Home.

Gerald C. Hagen
MINOT -- Gerald C. "Jerry" Hagen, 71, Minot, died Feb. 15, 2001, in a Minot medical center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. Burial will be in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot. Visitation will be held from noon to 5 p.m. today at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Jerry was born July 21, 1929, in Sisseton, S.D., the son of Carl and Lena (Thompson) Hagen. He was raised and educated on a farm near Twin Valley, Minn., and attended Eureka Township Grade School and Twin Valley High School. After his schooling he farmed with his father for a time. He was drafted by the U.S. Army to serve in the Korean conflict in 1951, where he served as a mechanic and truck driver. He was honorably discharged in 1953 and returned to North Dakota. On May 3, 1953, he married Ruth Grasby at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. They farmed southeast of Minot in New Prairie Township and he worked for Mitchell Hardware for a year. He continued his education in welding, mechanics and farm management through the GI Bill. He started working as a mechanic for Bridgeman Creameries as well as maintaining his farming interests. He retired from farming in the early 1970s. In 1990 he retired from Bridgeman Creameries after 30 years of service. His wife Ruth died April 19, 1999. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles for 45 years, the American Legion and the Teamsters Union. He loved to do carpentry work and remodeling. He was an avid gardener. He built a sprint car that was used as a pace car at the Nodak Speedway for one year. In 1999 he continued to build go-carts for his grandchildren. He is survived by five daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria and Carroll Hauge, Grand Forks, Kathleen and Bruce Sherwood, Canon City, Colo., Jeanette and John Festvog, Rolla, and Marie and Barry Bourquin and Nadine and Bryan Holmly, all of Minot; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. They include: Curtis Hauge; Carmen and Jeff Bowden and their children Amanda, Rusty, Brady and Samantha; Ryan and Jamie Sherwood and children Mitchell and Mackenzie; Jennifer Sherwood; Heidi Fiala and her children John Michael and Greta Ruth; Eris Festvog; Nathan, Colton and sutton Bourquin; and Ian and Evan Holmly. He is also survived by two brothers and one sister-in-law, Lowell, Hitterdal, Minn., and Allen and Edith, Glenwood City, Wisc.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; his parents; and one infant son.

Beatrice Laib
Beatrice Laib, 79, Bismarck, died Feb. 13, 2001, in Tampa, Fla. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bismarck Funeral Home. Further arrangements are pending.

Ralph Nelson
HARVEY -- Ralph Nelson, 86, Harvey, died Feb. 17, 2001, in the Harvey hospital. Arrangements are pending with Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Helen Saff
Helen Saff, 77, Portland, Ore., died Jan. 16, 2001, at her home after a struggle with cancer. Services were held Jan. 21 at St. Teresa's Catholic Church, Portland. She is survived by her husband, Benny; three daughters, Diane Allais and Nancy Bergon, both of Portland, and Karen Osbourne, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Beatrice Saff; one stepson, Bernard Saff; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four brothers, Victor Schmidt, Bismarck, Nick Schmidt, Breien, Ed Schmidt, Flasher, and James Schmidt, West Fargo; and three sisters, Francis Mack, Dickinson, Monica Schmidt, Solen, and Delores Galas, Minneapolis.

James A. Samson
MINOT -- James A. Samson, 61, Minot, died Feb. 16, 2001, in a Minot medical center due to illness. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Minot. Burial will be in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot. He is survived by one son, Kelly, Minot; two daughters, Michele Michlitsch, Mandan, and DeeAnn Mertz, Sawyer; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Sharon Tofteland, Minot. Ida Schumacher
LINTON -- Ida Schumacher, 85, Linton, formerly of Ashley, died Feb. 17, 2001, in the Linton hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley. Further arrangements are pending with Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley.

Agnes R. Wanek
REEDER -- Agnes R. Wanek, 83, Reeder, died Feb. 16, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Reeder. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Reeder. She is survived by four sons, Clinton and Alan, both of Bismarck, Donald, Reeder, and Mark, Rapid City, S.D.; one daughter, Betty Hanson, Pierre, S.D.; six grandchildren; and one sister, Leona Rath, Bowman. NEW ROCKFORD -- Harris Wishart, 95, New Rockford, died Feb. 17, 2001, in a New Rockford care center. Arrangements are pending with Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.

Judy Ann Wodarz
Judy Ann Wodarz, 53, Bismarck, died Feb. 16, 2001, at her home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Church of St. Mary, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in Christ the King Cemetery, Browerville, Minn. Visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Central High School, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Judy was born May 24, 1947, in Long Prairie, Minn., the daughter of John W. and Mathilda J. (Caspersen) Wodarz. She was raised on the family farm east of Browerville, and graduated from Browerville High School. She graduated from Moorhead State University in August 1969. Following college graduation, she taught at Balta from 1970 to 1971 and Sentinel Butte from 1971-1972. While at Sentinel Butte, she supervised and helped create hand-carved string puppets to enact the Christmas story by grades 4 and 5. Judy came to Bismarck in 1972 and taught math, art and physical education at St. Mary's Grade School. In 1973 she took on the major project of painting a wide variety of science on the third floor hallway of the grade school. From 1976 to 2000 she taught all areas of history and social studies at St. Mary's Central High School. she also taught a social studies class offered for college credit through the University of Mary. Judy felt the importance of treating all people who enter one's life with respect and dignity. It is important to know that we are all servants of God and therefore are expected to be here to serve one another. She was a member of Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, and Christ the King Parish, Browerville. In 1992 she was named the Bismarck Diocese Catholic High School Educator of the Year and in 2000 she received the Outstanding Educator Award from Jostens. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, yard work, reading, bowling and softball. She also enjoyed attending high school sports events. She was a member of the Bismarck-Mandan Bowling League from 1973 to 1995. She is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Arnold and Evelyn, Cohasset, Minn.; one sister and brother-in-law, Teresa and Wayne Miller, Little Falls, Minn.; her nieces and nephews, Wayne and Julie Wodarz, Plateville, Wisc., Steve and Becca Wodarz, River Falls, Wisc., Kevin and Colette Wodarz, Buffalo, Wisc., Gary and Melissa Wodarz, Germany, Karen Wodarz, Lake Pepin, Minn., Karen and Vicki Miller, Trosky, Minn., Rick and Regina Miller, Vacaville, Calif., David and Anita Miller, Euliss, Texas, and Tim and Wendy Miller, Chelmsford, Mass.; and previous and present colleagues and students at SMCHS. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bernard and Father Donald; and one sister-in-law, Alice Wodarz. The family prefers memorials to St. Mary's Miss Wodarz Scholarship Fund or Medcenter One Hospice. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Clara Zahn
Clara Zahn, 75, Bismarck, died Feb. 16, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in the spring. Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at Perry Funeral Home, where a rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church. Clara was born Oct. 9, 1925, at Hague, to Peter and Elizabeth (Holzer) Buechler. She was raised and educated in Hague. She married Steven Zahn Feb. 6, 1950, in Hague. After marriage they moved to Bismarck where Clara worked at St. Alexius Hospital. After starting their family, she stayed at home and raised her children. She did in-home daycare for several years. She was a wonderful mother, full of life and laughter. She enjoyed being with her children, helping her husband in the garden, shopping, cooking and baking. She also enjoyed visiting, especially with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by eight daughters and seven sons-in-law, Cynthia and Curtis Sprenger, Colette and Paul Sukut, Cheryl and Randy Remmick, and Connie Zahn, all of Bismarck, Clarice and John Davis, Aurora, Colo., Charlene and Ronald Busch, Lakewood, Colo., Charmaine and Steven Roethler, Maple Grove, Minn., and Carla and Richard Gartner, Fargo; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary and Aloysius Zacher, and Elizabeth Scherr, all of Strasburg, and Ann and Tomas Santos, Cocoa, Fla.; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Ferdinand and Cecilia Buecher, Linton, Martin and Agnes Buechler, Bismarck, John and Alice Buechler, Minot, and Al and Janice Buechler, Monroe, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Calvin Sprenger, Amy Senger, Rebecca Roethler, Elizabeth Sukut, Rachel Remmick, and Stuart, Valerie, Stephanie and Joseph Gartner; and two great-granddaughters, Shelbie and Calista Sprenger. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steven, on Jan. 1, 2001; one infant daughter, Linda; her parents; and one brother, Carl. The family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer's Association.

STREETER -- Reinhold Buck, 81, Streeter, died Feb. 17, 2001, in Wishek. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Haut Funeral Chapel, Jamestown. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown. He is survived by his wife, Edna; two sons, Wilbert, West Fargo, and Rodney, St. Paul, Minn.; three daughters, Marvelene Kitzman, Fargo, Koreen Tongen, Plymouth, Wisc., and Brender Stieder, The Woodlands, Texas; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marie Wentz, Gackle.

Beatrice R. Laib
Beatrice R. Laib, 79, Bismarck, died Feb. 13, 2001, in Tampa, Fla. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue two hours prior to services on Wednesday. Beatrice was born Nov. 11, 1921, in Bismarck, the daughter of Thomas Sr. and Lesta (Hannah) Pinks. She married Theodore Laib June 7, 1940, in Bismarck. Theodore died in 1998. Beatrice loved traveling and gardening. She is surived by five daughters and two sons-in-law, Luella Miller and Archie Turner, San Bernedino, Calif., Penny Slocum, Tampa, Fla., Sally Hammons, Nashville, Tenn., and Laura and Ken Wall, and Brenda Kuhn, all of Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, Duwaine and Dale, Mississippi; three brothers, Thomas Pinks Jr., Bismarck, Jack Pinks, Tacoma, Wash., and Robert Pinks, Chico, Calif.; and one sister, Bernice Miller, Tacoma, Wash. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore; one great-grandson; one son-in-law, Ray Slocum; her parents; two brothers, Wallace and Joseph Pinks; and one sister, Nellie Long.
