Liberatus Heinert
Liberatus "Lib" Heinert, 74, Mandan, died Feb. 21, 2001, in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan. A parish vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Weigel Funeral Home. Lib was born Aug. 6, 1926, in Solen, the son of Raphael and Celestine (Erhardt) Heinert. Lib was raised and educated in Solen. On Nov. 16, 1948, he married Mary Leingang in St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Mandan, where he was a lifetime resident. He was employed with Froeschle as well as Metric Construction and was proud of the fact that he was involved in the construction of Minot Ryan High School and Bismarck Post Office. Lib was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Parish. He was also a member of the Eagles. He enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle, listening to polka, country and old-time music. His family always came first in his life, and he looked forward to spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Mary; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Gary and Geretta, Bismarck, and Duane and Jackie, and Kevin, all of Mandan; one daughter and son-in-law, Yvonne and Gerry Froelich, Mandan; and five grandchildren, Traci Heinert, Troy Heinert, Kelli Hagerott, Brian Heinert and Greg Froelich. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Matt, Mike, Roy and Adam; and one sister, Monica.

Catherine Holzer
Catherine Holzer, 85, Bismarck, died Feb. 21, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Church Cemetery, Fort Yates. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue from 3:30 to 9 p.m. at the church, where a Catholic Daughters rosary will be held at 4 p.m. and a parish vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 to 10:30 a.m Saturday at the church. Catherine (Helt) Holzer was born June 19, 1915, in Sidley, Saskatchewan, Canada, the daughter of John J. and Johanna (Bachmeier) Helt. Catherine moved with her parents to Mt. Angel, Ore., in 1916. In 1917, the family homesteaded to North Dakota, where they made their home in Fort Yates. Catherine attended St. Bernard's High School at Fort Yates and attended Mt. Marty High School, Yankton, S.D. Catherine married Joseph Holzer Oct. 20, 1936, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Fort Yates. A couple of months later, Catherine and Joseph moved to Bismarck, where Catherine worked for Oscar Will's Seed Store and the Prince Hotel. In 1942, Catherine and Joseph returned to Fort Yates. Catherine was active in the Cub Scouts as a Den Mother for many years. She worked at Diamond Z Grocery Store for 12 years and the U.S. Post Office for 16 years. When she retired from the Post Office, she worked as a housekeeper at the Catholic Rectory for 14 years. She retired at the age of 72. Catherine's love was her family. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, and cooking and baking for her family and friends, especially taking baked goods to the elderly and shut-ins. Catherine had the ability of making food delicious. Catherine was a member of the Bernardine Society, Homemakers Club, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion, Cub Scouts and Catholic Daughters. She is survived by one son, Tom Holzer, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Dennis Gad, Bismarck; three grandchildren, Justin Holzer, and Brad and Denise Bentley; one brother, Tony Helt; and two sisters-in-law, Mary and Betty Holzer. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1995; her parents; two brothers, Bernard and John; and five sisters, Elizabeth, Ann, Barbara, Scholastica and Marie.

Violet Holzworth
Violet Holzworth, 65, Bismarck, died Feb. 18, 2001, at her home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom Dunham officiating. Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services. Violet was born Aug. 29, 1935, in Napoleon, the daughter of Reinhold and Mary (Hottman) Gensburg. She married Alvin Holzworth Oct. 6, 1951. She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert and Cindy and Daniel and Keshia, all of Bismarck, and Kenneth, Sanford, Fla.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, David Gensburg, Napoleon, and George and Betty Gensburg and Herb and Jenny Gensburg, all of Bismarck; two sisters, Erna Leno, Bismarck, and Francis Joslin, Jamestown; six grandchildren, Allen, Amie, Duran, Dee, Keedan and Dezary; four sisters-in-law, Alvina Hamel and Lydia Gensburg, both of Napoleon, and Arlene Conitz and Betty Holzworth, both of Bismarck; and two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Eugene and Delores Holzworth and Floyd and Judy Holzworth, all of Bismarck. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin; one brother, Otto; and one daughter-in-law, Donna. A special thanks to Jessica, "Auntie Vi's Helper."

Frances Krenzler
ASHLEY -- Frances Krenzler, 93, Ashley, died Feb. 20, 2001, in an Ashley care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Ashley Medical Center Nursing Home. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Ashley. She is survived by one niece, Naomi Pratt, Sioux Falls, S.D. (Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley)

Clara Madison
BEACH -- Clara Madison, 87, Beach, died Feb. 20, 2001, in Glendive, Mont. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Saturday at St. John's the Baptist Church, Beach. She is survived by her husband, Homer; two daughters, Darolyn Nelson, Glendive, Mont., and Marla Bach, Carmichael, Calif.; three grandchildren; one brother, Albert Wicka, Beach; and one sister, Vera Covell, Sandcreek, Mich. LEEDS -- Leslie Olson, 54, Leeds, died Feb. 21, 2001, in a Fargo hospital. Arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds.

James Howard Puhr
James Howard Puhr, 70, Mandan, died Feb. 21, 2001, in a Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan. Jim was born with epilepsy, a handicap that he was quoted as saying, "you don't overcome, you learn to live with it." He attended school in Valley City through the ninth grade, before coming to Mandan, where he attended Mandan High School. However, he did not graduate. He made his home with his father until his death on Dec. 15, 1966, maintaining his own residences from that time on. Jim could often be seen riding his bicycle around Mandan. Jim was employed as a janitor for Bill's Super Valu from the 1950s through the 1980s. He was also employed in doing yard work for many residents of Mandan, always having a ready smile for everybody. He considered the Joersz family and their many employees as his own family. He was a member of the Bismarck-Mandan Handicapped Association and was named Mandan's handicapped, having been sponsored by the American Legion of Mandan and Mandan Mayors Committee on the Handicapped. Jim was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and faithfully attended church services every day. He loved funny books and kept up on news around the world. He liked to listen to tapes and records. Jim had been a resident of Mandan Care Center for the past nine years. He is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Loretta and Robert Larson; one niece, Elizabeth Larson; three nephews, Bob, Jerry and Tom Larson, all of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and several aunts and uncles.

Robert Sand
NAPOLEON -- Robert Sand, 95, Napoleon, died Feb. 20, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Full Gospel Assembly Church, Napoleon. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery, Napoleon. He is survived by his wife, Dagny; three sons, Warren, Jamestown, Dale, Napoleon, and Randel, Tuttle; two daughters, Audrey Oberlander, Camano Island, Wash., and Ardith Sand, Rapid City, S.D.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Earl, Barnesville, Minn., Roy, Fargo, and Glen, Laurel, Mont. Florence Varty
GARRISON -- Florence Varty, 89, Garrison, formerly of Douglas, died Feb. 19, 2001, in a Garrison care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, Douglas. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery, Minot. She is survived by five daughters, Dorothy Keller, Gaffney, S.C., Carol Klain, Kalispell, Mont., Ruthie Tollefson, Maddock, bonnie Martens, Walla Walla, Wash., and Betty Schlicting, Garrison; three sons, Art and David, both of Minot, and Robert, Burlington; 39 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Fisher, Flaxville, Mont., and Dee Dee Hoskins, Sacramento, Calif. Ruth S. Bruegger
FARGO -- Ruth S. Bruegger, 94, Manor Care Health Center, 1315 S. University Drive, Fargo, formerly of 1341 11th St. N., Fargo, died Feb. 20, 2001, in a Fargo care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Peace Lutheran Church, Fargo, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo. Honorary casketbearers will be Jack F. Carter, Leah Harth, James D. Hohncke, George Lubbers Jr., Idella Fried and former and future 4-H youth of the State of North Dakota, and co-workers of the NDSU Extension Service. Visitation will be held at the church one hour before services. Louise Ruth Shepard was born Aug. 7, 1906, in Burnstad, the daughter of Harley A. and Johanna M. (Meyer) Shepard. She grew up and attended school in Burnstad, where she graduated from high school in 1925. Ruth taught in a rural school in Burnstad, and also taught primary grades and high school English at Burnstad High School. She attended and later graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1932 with her bachelor of science degree in education. While at UND Ruth was a member of the Honorary Home Economics Fraternity, the Home Economics Club, Chemistry Club and a YWCA Big Sister. After college, she began her career with the North Dakota Cooperative Extension Service at North Dakota State University in Fargo where she was the 4-H Home Economics Leader. In 1950, Ruth served as a consultant in extension home economics programs in Wurttemberg-Baden, Germany. She married Orville H. Bruegger on April 7, 1951, in Fargo. The couple made their home in Fargo. Ruth continued to work as the 4-H Home Economics Leader at NDSU. She retired in 1968 as associate state 4-H home economics leader. Her husband, Orville, preceded her in death on May 20, 1979. Ruth's professional organizations included North Dakota Home Economics Association, president from 1969-1971; American Home Economics Association; Phi Upsilon Omicron; Epsilon Sigma Phi; National Association of Retired FEderal Employees, Chapter 119, president 1982. Other organizations that Ruth belonged to were the F-M Fine Arts Club, Home Economics Section; N.D.S.U. Women's Club, Humane Society of Fargo-Moorhead. In 1980 she received the North Dakota Pioneer 4-H Leader Award. In 1985 she was recognized for 50 years of membership in the American Home Economics Association at its Pacesetters Dinner celebration. Ruth received the Meritorious Service Award in 1989 from the Upsilon Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Phi Fraternity. In 1993 she was inducted into the North Dakota 4-H Hall of Fame. She is survived by one niece, Kathleen Patricia (Shepard) Larson, Duluth, Ga. Also surviving are three grand-nieces and four grand-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Orville; one sister, Myrtle Alta Valentine; and two brothers, Thornton Harley Arthur Shepard and Frederick Theodore Carl Shepard; one nephew, Fred S. Shepard; and one niece, Shirley Shepard Barcome. The family requests memorials for Ruth S. Bruegger be sent to: North Dakota 4-H Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 5436, Fargo, N.D. 58105-5436. Alice Mae Emineth, 73, Bismarck, died Feb. 21, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bismarck Funeral Home. Further arrangements are pending.

Vivi H. Konkler
HETTINGER -- Vivi H. Konkler, 89, Mandan, formerly of Hettinger, died Feb. 19, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MST Saturday at Assembly of God Church, Hettinger, with the Rev. Ron Partridge officiating. Burial will be in Hettinger Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue one hour before services at the church. Grateful to have shared her life are her son, Donald, and his wife, Joann, Palmer, Alaska; two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Gary Hansen, Nelson, Minn., and Faye and Dale Schaible, Mandan; two sisters, Mae Kvanvig and Amy Banning, both of Hettinger; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Linfred; her parents; one sister, Ada Shoop; and six brothers, Erhardt, Arthur, Orvar, Viking, Ragnar and Einar.

Doris Michelson
Doris Michelson, 84, Bismarck, died Feb. 22, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Bismarck Baptist Church, and at 3 p.m. Monday at Martin Baptist Church, Martin. Further arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service.

Marjorie Rose Parker
GARRISON -- Marjorie Rose Parker, 72, Peoria, Ariz., formerly of Garrison, died Feb. 19, 2001, in Peoria. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison, with burial in Garrison Cemetery. She is survived by one daughter, Linda Anderson; two grandchildren; one sister, LaRue Mislin, Santa Maria, Calif.; and one brother, Lynn, Garrison. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

Harold Rosenberg
DICKINSON -- Harold Rosenberg, 88, Dickinson, died Feb. 20, 2001, in a Dickinson care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Saturday at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson. He is survived by one son, Ralph, Davenport, Iowa; and one sister, Luella Riedl, Dickinson.

Hilda L. Schultz
JAMESTOWN -- Hilda L. Schultz, 80, Jamestown, died Feb. 20, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown. She is survived by her husband, Charles; two daughters, Margaret Elhard, Phoenix, and Charla Hunting, Phoenix; three granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Arnold Burkhardt, Tacoma, Wash.; and three sisters, Martha McCumber, Toppenish, Wash., Elsie Schwacke, Los Angeles, and Margaret Wentland, Jamestown.

Bernard R. Sterna
Bernard R. "Bernie" Sterna, 84, Mandan, died Feb. 21, 2001, in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Charles Axness officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, rural Mandan. Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. There will be no reviewal at the church. Bernie was born Dec. 29, 1916, at New Leipzig, to Joseph and Alma (Perterla) Sterna. He was raised and attended rural school in the Solen area and farmed in the Huff area. He married Clementine Feth on Sept. 4, 1940, at Mandan. They retired from farming in 1978 and made their home in Mandan. Bernie loved hunting with his dogs for coon and coyotes. He loved horses and did most of his farming with them. Bernie is survived by his wife, Clementine; his seven sons and three daughters-in-law, Joe and Lorraine, Jack and Susan, all of Deadwood, S.D., Jim and Debbie, Newell, S.D., Jessie and Jay, both of Mandan, Jerry and his friend, Jolene Berger, Mandan, and John, Phoenix, Ariz.; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Carlene and Gabe Tschida, Lake Wales, Fla., Donna and Ron Dabbieri, Springfield, Va., Susan and David Fick, Mandan, and Debbie Sterna, Bismarck; 21 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren; four brothers and two sisters-in-law, Fred and Darlene, John and Joan, Melvin and Art, all of Mandan; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Della and Gus Belohlavek, Mandan, and Fern and Tom Smith, Westminster, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Arnold, Donald and Harvey; two sisters, Ardis and Donna; and two grandsons, Kevin Sterna and Paul Hudson.
