Emily G. Berke
Emily G. (Davis) Berke, 93, Garnett, Kan., and formerly of Bismarck, died May 21, 2000 in a Garnett living center. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 4, 2000, at the First Baptist Church, Garnett and later in Iowa. She is survived by her daughter, Evelyn Shaffer, Garnett; one sister, Marguerite Laufer, Prairie Du Chien, Wis.; and two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Linda Bibelheimer
Linda Bibelheimer, 91, died Dec. 13, 2000, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Century Baptist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Gordon Stork officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Drake City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. She was born April 9, 1909 in Olganufka, Russia, to Frederick and Maria (Schnitzer) Tiede. At an early age, her family moved to Marienwerder, at that time a part of Prussia south of Danzig, a port on the Baltic Sea which is now part of Poland. In 1926, her family migrated to Rochester, N.Y. She attended the Philadelphia Bible Institute in Philadelphia, Pa., for two years. She married Alfred W. Bibelheimer on April 15, 1934 in Southey, Saskatchewan, Canada. Three children were born to this union: Henry of Drake, Dorothy (McGrath) of Velencia, Calif., and John of Drake. Linda Bibelheimer was known for her very personable and sensitive nature, and served in various capacities in support of the ministry of her husband. She is survived by her husband, Alfred; her three children; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be given to the Baptist Home in Bismarck. Anna S. Curry
Anna S. Curry, 96, South Kingstown, R.I., died Dec. 10, 2000, in a Wakefield, R.I., hospital. The funeral service and burial will be private. She is survived by one son, Harold Curry, South Kingstown; one daughter, Carol Kitko, Bismarck; and four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. (Avery-Storti Funeral Home, Wakefield)

Philip Eckroth, 78, Mandan, died Dec. 14, 2000, in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Rick E. Fercho
Rick E. Fercho, 47, Bismarck, died Dec. 13, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lester Wolfgram officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Rick was born Jan. 10, 1953 in Bismarck, the son of Richard and Angeline (Bohe) Fercho. He attended Bismarck schools while growing up in Bismarck. He worked at Cary's Kitchen as a cook and later at Kroll's as a cook until his death. Rick enjoyed riding motorcycles, working on cars while listening to oldies music and he liked meeting with his buddies to talk and have coffee. He is survived by his wife, Sandy; and his foster son, Paul (Heather) Heinle, Minot. He was preceded in death by his mother, Angeline; and two sisters.

Edmund Hieb
DENHOFF -- Edmund Hieb, 82, Denhoff, died Dec. 13, 2000, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, McClusky. Burial will be in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, McClusky. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky, and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Edmund was born April 1, 1918 in Lamont Township near McClusky, the son of Jacob and Paulina (Dietrich) Hieb. He grew up and attended school in Denhoff. As a young man he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and later was the custodian at the Denhoff Public School. Edmund entered the Army on Jan. 14, 1941 and served in the United States and Europe during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 22, 1945. He returned to Denhoff and served as postmaster at the Denhoff Post Office, retiring in 1977. He married Verna Erdmann Carley on Jan. 14, 1967 in McClusky. They resided in Denhoff. Verna died May 7, 1999. More recently he had lived at the Sheridan Memorial Home, McClusky, St. Aloisius Nursing Home, Harvey, and the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church of McClusky, a life member of the VFW of Bismarck, a life member of the Battle of the Bulge, the Goodrich American Legion, and The Wells Eagles Aerie No. 3080 of Harvey. He is survived by one stepdaughter, Margaret Kuntz and her husband, Jim, Bismarck; three stepsons, Franklin Carley and his wife, Barb, Fargo, Don Carley and his wife, Lois, Lincoln, and Robin Carley, Denhoff; five step-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Bauer, Bismarck, and Virginia Wanzek, Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Verna; seven brothers, Rudolph, Jacob, Herbert, William, Raymond, Emil and Adolph; and three sisters, Martha, Katherine and Edna.

James Collins
James Collins, 90, 1111 N. 1st Street, Bismarck, died Dec. 4, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, rural Mandan, with full military rites provided by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 707 and American Legion Post 40. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be said at 7 p.m., followed at 7:30 p.m., with a parish vigil. James Collins was born Oct. 31, 1910 in Glendale, Wis. He was the son of James and Ann (Murphy) Collins. Jim was raised and educated at Marshfield, Wis. and graduated from Marshfield High School in 1928. He then worked for J.C. Penny in Marshfield and Rice Lake, Wis. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 where he was in the Quarter Master Corp serving in the South Pacific until 1944. On April 1, 1944, he married Marion Sparby in Minneapolis. After his marriage, he continued to work for J.C. Penny as a manager in Wisconsin and Minnesota. He moved to Mandan in 1962, where he owned and operated Collins Department Store until 1986. He was a member of Mandan Rotary, Elks, American Legion and Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. After moving to Bismarck in 1999, he continued to enjoy daily coffee with his friends at Mandan Drug. Jim is survived by his wife, Marion, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, James (Sparb) and Michelle, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane and Richard Taylor, Erskin, Minn.; five grandchildren, Amanda and Brandon Collins, David, Allison and Kevin Taylor. Thomas George Himmelspach
Thomas George Himmelspach, 64, Center, died Dec. 2, 2000, due to an automobile accident west of Mandan. Services will be held at 10 a.m. CST Wednesday at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Center, with the Revs. Roger Synek and Austin Vetter officiating. Burial will be in the Yucca Cemetery, by the family farmstead, rural Center. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services at the church. Thomas George Himmelspach was born on Nov. 19, 1936, to Joseph and Monica (Immel) Himmelspach at the family. He was raised and educated in Oliver County. On June 12, 1956, he married Evangeline (Vangie) Freidig in Center. The couple resided on the family farm near Center for the past 44 years. He farmed the family farmstead up until the time of his death. He worked for Kist Livestock and Farmers Union both in Mandan, and worked as a labor carpenter and millwright before he worked for the Boilermaker Local 647 for the past 25 years. He retired at the age of 62. Tom was a member of the Bismarck Eagles Club. He was also a member of Knife River Pheasants Forever, where he was president for the past five years. Tom loved his music and he played in several bands throughout the years. He was a volunteer for many organizations throughout his lifetime. Tom and Vangie have enjoyed their summers at their lake home in Pick City for the past 20 years. They have many wonderful memories with special friends and family. Tom enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren and buddies. Since Tom retired they spent the last two winters in Yuma, Ariz. He loved making sausage, having Rocky Mountain oysters and fish fries. Tom and Vangie belong to St. Martin's Catholic Church in Center. He is survived by his wife, Vangie of 44 years, Center; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Sue, Clearwater, Minn.; seven daughters and sons-in-law, Deb and Dave Berger, Center, Claudia and Kevin Bender, and Jolene and Earl Erdman, all of Bismarck, Lorie and Ken Herbek, Monticello, Minn., Jackie and Dave Lemer, Vale, Ore., Judy and Gary Neuberger, Beulah, and Sherri and Dirk Weng, Watertown, S.D.; his mother, Monica Himmelspach, Mandan; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Kathy, Cheyenne, Wyo., Clem and Leona, Woodinville, Wash., and Jim and Betty, Raymond, Minn.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Darlene and Ray Kautzman, Mandan, and Deloris and Ted Nordaby, Bothell, Wash.; 24 grandchildren, Kristy, Cody, Craig, Chad, Melony, Amber, Ashley, Alicen, Arika, Joey, Jordan, Michael, Eric, Adam, Travis, Alisha, David, Brandi, Shawn, Shane, Shawn, Samantha, Alexis and Kayla. Raymond L. Kautzman
CENTER -- Raymond L. Kautzman, 61, Center, died Dec. 3, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Center, with the Revs. Jon Erickson and G. G. Neuberger officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church from 2-8 p.m. today and will continue one hour before services. Raymond L. was born on Dec. 25, 1938 in Mandan, the son of Otto and Ella (Baisch) Kautzman. He was raised in Oliver County and educated in Oliver and Mercer Counties. He was once married to Wanda Boger. He worked for his dad, planting and cleaning trees for the Corp of Engineers. In the early 60's, he moved to South Dakota and worked for Peter Keweit and Sons. In 1963, he moved back to Center and managed Emil's Bar. He was a serviceman for Pfliger Hardware in Center from 1966 to 1969. In the late 60's and early 70's, Ray was active in the rodeo circuit bulldogging. Ray married Jean Pfliger on Aug. 1, 1969 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. He was a self-taught accordian and piano player and played with his mother-in-law, Louise Pfliger, in the Westernaire Band for 35 years. He also played accordian in the Erhardt Country Band. He owned and operated Westernaire Bar in Center until 1977. During this time, he also farmed and ranched, which he did until the time of his death. He also did restoration of vehicles and farm equipment. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Jean; his daughter, Linda Isaak, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Jerry and Sarina, Antioch, Calif., Terry and Jodene, Stanton, Tim, Tacoma, Wash., and Marty, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Rita and Otto Voegele, Hazen, and Monica DeBoer, Elko, Nev.; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Tomadean, Mesa, Ariz.; his uncle and two aunts, Louis and Marlene Hagerott, and Helen Bosch, all of Center; several nieces and nephews; and Jean's one brother, Thomas Pfliger, and his wife, Jane, Lewiston, Idaho; five sisters, Judith Poffenberger, Bismarck, Arlyce Schulte, Harvey, Claudia Albers and her husband, Lyle, (who was Ray's special friend), Hannover, Sheryl Pfliger, Bismarck, and Charlene Sampson, Center. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Tracy; his brothers, Harry and Danny; his sister, Adeline Herman; his brothers-in-law, Howard "Yogi" Schulte, Dennis Poffenberger, and Jim Daugherty. Olaf Knutson
WILLISTON -- Olaf Knutson, 90, Williston, died Dec. 5, 2000 in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Williston. Further arrangements are pending with Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Willie Lachenmeier
NAPOLEON -- Willie Lachenmeier, 84, Napoleon, died Dec. 4, 2000 at his home after a lingering illness. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, at Salem United Methodist Church, Napoleon, with the Revs. Ronn Wilke and Bill Busch officiating. Burila will be in Napoleon City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-noon Thursday, both at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Willie was born on Jan. 11, 1916, four miles northeast of Napoleon, the son of August and Christina (Becker) Lachenmeier. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural Logan County schools. Willie married Helen Bender on Jan. 24, 1941 at Napoleon. They farmed 12 miles northeast of Napoleon until September of 1952, when they moved to Napoleon due to ill health. Willie worked in the grain elevator for nine years, and in the fall and winter months hauled coal. He worked for three years at the Napoleon Super Valu and three years for Wolf's Farm Equipment at Kintyre. Willie also did a lot of painting and carpentry which he loved, and tilled gardens which was his pride. He also enjoyed doing the janitorial work in the Salem United Methodist Church, working at the recycling center, and working in his home doing cleaning, cooking and baking. Willie enjoyed visiting with people wherever he went, and took great pride in his grandchildren by baking them goodies whenever they came to visit. Willie was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church, was a board member of the Napoleon Care Center, and served on various committees for the church. Survivors include his wife, Helen; two daughters, Adeline (Marvin) Wolf, and Lorraine (Charles) Rau, both of Napoleon; five grandchildren, Lorin (LeAnn) Wolf, Bismarck, Galen (Becky) Wolf, Atlanta, Georgia, Jason Wolf, Fargo, Anita (David) Horner, Fargo, and Travis Rau, Bismarck; four great-grandchildren, Christopher and Brooklyn Wolf, and Nicholas and Nathan Horner; three brothers, John (Edna), Art (Denelda), and August (Lorraine); two sisters, Edna Bender and Ella (AJ) Guthmiller; three half-brothers, Herbert, Charles and Gerald; and five half-sisters, Leona, Marjorie, Ruby, Caroline and Kathleen. He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Christina; and stepmother, Alma; two brothers, Albert and Gideon; four sisters, Christina, Amelia, Lillian and Helen; three half-brothers, Arnold, Gary and Walter; and one half-sister, Lucille.

Darrel D. Landsiedel
MCCLUSKY -- Darrel D. Landsiedel, 60, McClusky, died Dec. 4, 2000 in the Turtle Lake hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at United Methodist Church, Turtle Lake, with burial in Turtle Lake Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Landsiedel, McClusky; one son, Darren, Baldwin; two daughters, Sherri Girard, Dillon, Mont., and Janine Camacho, Denver, Colo.; his mother, Gertie Landsiedel, Turtle Lake; and six grandchildren; six brothers and two sisters. Melvin Leingang
Melvin Leingang, 45, 1702 Third Street N.E., Mandan, died Dec. 4, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan and continues there on Thursday until the time of service. A parish vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the church. Melvin S. Leingang, 45, surrendered his pain of cancer on Dec. 4, 2000 at Medcenter One. Through his strong faith he has received eternal life with our Lord and savior. Melvin graduated in 1972 from Mandan High School. Early in his life he had worked part-time as a sportswriter for the Mandan Morning Pioneer. On April 30, 1976, he married Billie Jane Makelke in Mandan. Mel went on to work for Baukol-Noonan as a heavy equipment operator for a few years. Mel worked for Tierney Chevrolet now Puklich Chevrolet for 13 years, while working at Puklich Chevrolet, he attended night school at BSC and in 1984, he received his associates of arts degree. Mel continued his education through the University of Mary and received his Bachelors of Accounting in 1989. Also, in 1989, Mel passed the complete Certified Public Accounting test the first try. In 1993, Mel received his Masters Degree in Business from UND. Mel started working in 1989 for Q & R Clinic, now Medcenter One Health Systems through the present. He held various positions and loved the challenge each one presented. His final position as Director of Business Operations brought him such joy because of being in contact with so many fellow employees. Mel's other commitments throughout his years were, teaching evening sessions for adult learning at the University of Mary, Gods Child Project and Toastmasters, volunteering at St. Joseph School and worked on the pre-marriage program for eight years. Mel was proud to be a member of Certified Public Accountants of North Dakota, N.M.A., National Management Association, A.L.C.P.A., American Institute of Certified Public Accounting and I.M.A., Institute of Management accounting. Mel also played softball for 25 years and loved to play games and cards, especially pinochle with family and friends. He even started fishing and seemed to enjoy the solitude by the water. Of all his accomplishments he had, his pride and joy was his family. He was so proud of his son and daughter, and cherished his time with them. Mel enjoyed people and always had such a positive, upbeat attitude. He was always ready to lend a helping hand. We all will miss him dearly, but we do understand that he trusted in the Lord and is now resting with Him pain suffering free. Mel is survived by the love of his life, Billie Jane, one son, Dustin, one daughter, Lindsay, all of Mandan; his mother, Lorraine Leingang Carman, Bismarck; father-in-law, Ed Makelke, Mandan; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Vern and Dorothy, St. Anthony, and Robert and Lu, Mandan; one sister-in-law, Roberta (Bob) Ressler, Mandan; one brother-in-law, Tom (Kara) Makelke, Minneapolis; one sister-in-law, Vicki (Ron) Engstrom, Mandan; his nephews and nieces, Kevin and Diane, Keith and Julie, Kary and LaShalle, Curt and Billiell, Casey and Erik Leingang, Jon Engstrom, Rhonda and (Bob) Rockey, Stacey and (Rob) Geiger, Robin and Megan Leingang, and Crystal Engstrom; great-nephews and nieces, Brandon, Jordan, Jacob, Kylee, Alexius, Levi, Darien and Brodey; special friends, Curt Dellilah Johnson, Deb Bosch and Candace Gartner. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Jr.; two sons, Joseph and Matthew; his mother-in-law, Shirley Makelke, and one brother, Gerald; and one nephew, Chad Leingang. Melvin A. Peterson
WILLISTON -- Melvin A. Peterson, 85, Williston, formerly of Bainville, Mont., died Dec. 4, 2000 in the Williston hospital. Arrangements are pending with Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Eugene Roth
ELGIN -- Eugene Roth, 67, Elgin, died Dec. 3, 2000 in the Elgin hospital. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. MST Friday, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elgin, with the Rev. Tom Hallowell officiating. Burial will full military rites will be at 2:30 p.m. CST Friday, at North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, south of Mandan. A family service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin. Serving as casketbearers will be Leon Nesja, Kevin Roth, Mike Schatz, Daryl Veitz, James and Gary Butler, Mark Pederson and Craig Laub. Greg Banyai, all of Gene's family and friends are considered honorary bearers. A memorial has been established to the Gene Roth family. Eugene "Gene" Elmer Roth was born July 27, 1933 at Worms to Edwin and Emma (Ganthner) Roth. He attended German School District No. 3, a rural school near the family farm 23 miles north of New Leipzig. He served in the United States Army from the 3rd of August, 1954 to the 15th of May 1956, which included a tour in Korea. Gene returned to North Dakota and began working for the North Dakota Highway Department. He was united in marriage to Deloris Schulz on Aug. 18, 1957 at Elgin. They lived in Minneapolis where Gene attended Cosmotology College. They then moved to Bismarck where he owned and operated several hairstyling enterprises and businesses. To this union, two daughters Nadine and Faye were born. Gene and his family moved to Elgin in 1981 where he opened Gene's Hair Center. He was united in marriage to Helena Kapsch Banyai on Dec. 28, 1991 at Elgin. Another daughter Kayla was adopted to this union. Gene continued to operate his hairstyling business to the time of his death. Gene was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, and served as a deacon, and the George W. Snook American Legion Post No. 246. Gene was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, camping and helping other people. He was involved with and supported many area activities. He had a terrific sense of humor and will be greatly missed by his family and community. Keeping him in their fondest memories are his wife, Helena; three daughters and one son-in-law, Nadine Roth, Fargo, Faye and Mark Pederson, Onida, S.D., and Kayla Roth, Elgin; one granddaughter, Carmen Pederson; four brothers and five sisters-in-law, Gerald and Coleen Roth, Norman and Audrey Roth, all of Mandan, Larry and Bonnie Roth, Bismarck, Delmar Roth, Elgin, and Helen Roth, Warrensburg, Mo.; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Esther Maas, Renton, Wash., Violet and Lawrence Ketterling, Livingston, Texas, LaRue and Randy Ersch, Fredericksburg, Texas; three stepchildren, Amanda and her husband Phillip Gernand, Federal Way, Wash., Angela Banyai and special friend Tim Pruitt, Greg Banyai, all of Elgin; three step-grandchildren, Alex and Vincent Gernand, Alexius Banyai; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Ervin, Marvin and Bernard Roth.

Clifford William Bailey
Clifford William Bailey, 90, Bismarck, died Dec. 5, 2000, in Bismarck. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. David Swonger officiating. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military graveside rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars, Gilbert N. Nelson Post 1326, Bismarck. There will be no visitation. He was born at home Nov. 13, 1910, in rural Oliver County, the son of Walter and Elizabeth (Sherk) Bailey. He was raised and educated in Oliver County. He farmed with his father. In 1934, he started working for Universal Motors (Ford) Company. In 1942, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater. Following his discharge on Dec. 20, 1945, he returned to Universal Motors as a mechanic. Clifford married Katherine Wohkittel on Jan. 8, 1946, in Terry, Mont., and resided in Bismarck from that point on. In 1960 he opened Bailey Auto Repair on south Washington St., retiring in 1974. Clifford was known for the vegetables he raised and sold at Farmer's Market, for his teasing sense of humor, and for his ability to repair anything, except for the crack of dawn and a broken heart. He was a charter member of the House of Prayer Lutheran Church, a member of VFW Post 1326, American Legion Post 1, and the United Commercial Travelers. Clifford is survived by his wife, Katherine; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Wally Jacobson, Tucson, Ariz., Patti Bailey Stuhr and Jerry Stuhr, Barnsville, Minn., and Rena Kay and Pete Teyssedre, Seattle; one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Vicki, Bismarck; eight grandchildren, Paul and Muriel Schauer, and their children, Emma and Eric, Wilton, Todd and Sheila Schauer, and their children, Todd and Tyler, Farmington, N.M., Steve and Mary Selzler, and their children, Zach, Lexi and Sarah, Bismarck, Dan Selzler, Fargo, Lisa and Eugene Hettel, and their children, Elizabeth and Luke, Monroe, Wash., Bill Bingham, Seattle, Kevin Bailey and Russell Bailey, Bismarck; one brother, Fred, Bismarck; and one sister-in-law, Jean Bailey, Mandan. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; one sister; and one grandchild. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to House of Prayer Lutheran Church or Camp of the Cross.
