Terry Jay Wissink
BEACH -- Terry Jay Wissink, 46, Beach, died Feb. 8, 2000 in Dickinson. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Friday, at First Lutheran Church, Beach, with burial in Beach Lutheran Cemetery. He is survived by his mother, Elena Jones, Pocatello, Idaho; one son, Azure Wissink and a daughter, Selena Wissink, both of Toledo, Ohio; one son, Terry Wissink, Castle Rock, Colo.; three brothers, Ron and Craig, both of Beach, and Jerris, Dickinson; and three sisters, Sharon Kerns, Battle Mountain, Nev., Beverly Conny, Fort Lupton, Colo., and Sandra Slatterwaithe, Pocatello, Idaho. Carl E. Witkowski
Carl E. Witkowski, 86, Bismarck, died Feb. 8, 2000 in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. John Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation begins Friday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan from 9 a.m.-9 p.m., where a parish rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday evening. Carl E. Witkowski, the son of Leon and Josephine (Nubraski) was born on Nov. 15, 1913 in Chicago, Ill. He moved to Solen with his parents at the age of five. He was raised and educated in Solen. Carl moved to Mandan during the 1930's where he was employed at the Ford and Chevy Garages. For 25 years (1947-1972), he was part owner and operator of C&F Service, Mandan. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Iverson on May 15, 1943 in Mandan. Carl also worked as a janitor in the Mandan school system. Carl was a charter member and past president of the Mandan Eagles. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Karen, Elgin, and Les and Suzanne, Bismarck; one daughter, Carlotta (Pudge) Bender, Mandan; four grandchildren, Troy and Todd Bender, and Chris and Kyle Witkowski; one brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Alice Witkowski, Mandan; and one sister, Marie Friesz, Mandan. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy, who died on May 29, 1978; one granddaughter, Toni Bender; and one brother, John Witkowski. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

JoAnn Yocum
JoAnn Yocum, 69, of Bemidji, MN, died Jan. 26, 2000 in a Bemidji health center. A memorial service will be held at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. JoAnn was born July 22, 1930 in Pocahantus, Iowa the daughter of Boyd and Agnes (Dady) Yocum. Her educational and professional accomplishments are exemplary. She secured a Bachelors Degree from UND in 1961 and a Masters Degree from the University of Washington in 1966. She was a Board Certified Diplomate, a Licensed Certified Social Worker, a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers, and was a member of the Society of Teachers of Family Therapy. She received familytherapytraining at the Menniger Foundation in Topeka, Kan. and was awarded a Bush Fellow to study family therapy at the Philidelphia Child Guidance Institute. She devoted her life to children and family services and was considered one of the pioneers in North Dakota in the area of family therapy services. JoAnn worked for State and County Social Services in child welfare and family based services until 1981, when she accepted a position to serve as a trainer and consultant with the UND School of Medicine, teaching medical students the family systems' concepts. In 1987, she began a private practice in the Bismarck community and maintained that practice until she retired in 1997. She is survived by her sisters: Jean Johnson, Bemidji, Marie King, Menosha, Wis., and Pat Webster of Sauk Rapids, Minn., and brothers: Fred Yocum, Prescott Valley, Ariz. and Don Yocum, Grand Rapids, Minn. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers John, James and Dean Yocum. Memorials may be sent to Youthworks c/o the family of JoAnn Yocum at 221 W. Rosser, Bismarck, ND. Plans are being with the family to use memorial money to further training in family therapy.

Otto Pfaff
DENHOFF -- Otto Pfaff, 86, Denhoff, died Dec. 7, 2000 in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at United Community Baptist Church, Anamoose. Further arrangements are pending with Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Carol W. Phelps
Carol W. Phelps, 90, 1030 Bozeman Dr., Bismarck, died Dec. 8, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in Marietta, Ohio, at a later day. Carol was born May 18, 1910 at Marietta, Ohio, to Arthur E. and Mathilda (Nachtigal) Wilking. She was raised and educated in Marietta. She married Kenneth H. Phelps on July 29, 1932. Together they owned and operated a replica gun manufacturing business in Marietta from 1962 to 1975. Kenneth died May 18, 1975. In 1986, she moved to Bismarck to be closer to her family. Carol belonged to the Tuesday Quilting Society at Trinity Lutheran Church, was an RSVP Volunteer, and past president of the Bismarck AARP. Her hobbies included sewing and cooking, with making pies as her favorite. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Richard A. and DeEtta Phelps, Bismarck; one brother, Herbert C. Wilking, Winterhaven, Fla.; two grandchildren, Richard II and Lora, Bismarck, and Karen Phelps, Eagan, Minn.; and four great-grandchildren. Carol was preceded in death by her husband and parents. DICKINSON -- Charles "Charlie" Svihl, 79, Dickinson, died Dec. 6, 2000 in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Pauline; three daughters, Linda Spaeth, Dickinson, Debbie Stroh, Dickinson, and Sandy Pierce, Brainerd, Minn.; four brothers, Albert, Ben and Gordan, all of Dickinson, and Roland, New Hradec; three sisters, Mildred Binstock, Dickinson, Betty Hutzenbiler, Colorado Springs, Colo., Blanche Page, Fargo; and nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Monica Ternes, 93, Bismarck, died Dec. 8, 2000 in a Bismarck care center. Arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Clifford William Bailey
Clifford William Bailey, 90, Bismarck, died Dec. 5, 2000, in Bismarck. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. David Swonger officiating. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military graveside rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars, Gilbert N. Nelson Post 1326, Bismarck. There will be no visitation. He was born at home Nov. 13, 1910, in rural Oliver County, the son of Walter and Elizabeth (Sherk) Bailey. He was raised and educated in Oliver County. He farmed with his father. In 1934, he started working for Universal Motors (Ford) Co. In 1942, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater. Following his discharge on Dec. 20, 1945, he returned to Universal Motors as a mechanic. Clifford married Katherine Wohkittel on Jan. 8, 1946, in Terry, Mont., and resided in Bismarck from that point on. In 1960, he opened Bailey Auto Repair on south Washington Street, retiring in 1974. Clifford was known for the vegetables he raised and sold at Farmer's Market, for his teasing sense of humor, and for his ability to repair anything, except for the crack of dawn and a broken heart. He was a charter member of the House of Prayer Lutheran Church, a member of VFW Post 1326, American Legion Post 1, and the United Commercial Travelers. Clifford is survived by his wife, Katherine; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Wally Jacobson, Tucson, Ariz., Patti Bailey Stuhr and Jerry Stuhr, Barnesville, Minn., and Rena Kay and Pete Teyssedre, Seattle; one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Vicki, Bismarck; eight grandchildren, Paul and Muriel Schauer, and their children, Emma and Eric, Wilton, Todd and Sheila Schauer, and their children, Todd and Tyler, Farmington, N.M., Steve and Mary Selzler, and their children, Zach, Lexi and Sarah, Bismarck, Dan Selzler, Fargo, Lisa and Eugene Hettel, and their children, Elizabeth and Luke, Monroe, Wash., Bill Bingham, Seattle, Kevin Bailey and Russell Bailey, Bismarck; one brother, Fred, Bismarck; and one sister-in-law, Jean Bailey, Mandan. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; one sister; and one grandchild. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to House of Prayer Lutheran Church or Camp of the Cross. ZAP -- Virgil Boehler, 68, Butte, Mont., formerly of Zap, died Dec. 5, 2000, in a traffic accident near Livingston, Mont. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Saturday at Gloria Dei Church, Butte. He is survived by his mother, Ida, Bismarck; one brother, Gaylen, Bettenfort, Iowa; his sons, Scott, Livingston, Kevin, Sidney, Mont., Cole, Butte, and Mark, St.. Paul, Minn.; his daughters, Mary Miller, Glendive, Mont., Kimberly Koenig, Ronan, Mont., and Lisa Skalsky, Polson, Mont.; and many grandchildren. (Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home, Butte)

Clara Helm
BEULAH -- Clara Helm, 78, Beulah, died Dec. 6, 2000, in the Hazen hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Saturday at Concordia Lutheran Church, Beulah, with burial in Beulah Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Jack; one daughter, Patsy Frafford, Halliday; two sons, Noel and Clifford, both of Beulah; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Beatha Bertsch, Zap; and one brother, Arthur Ellwein, Canada. Joseph Pechtl
DICKINSON -- Joseph Pechtl, 83, Dickinson, died Dec. 6, 2000, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MST Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by two children, Ken Pechtl and Linda Pechtl, both of Dickinson; one sister, Ann Jacobson, Clearbrook, Minn.; one brother, Frank, Waite Park, Minn.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Melvin A. Peterson
WILLISTON -- Melvin A. Peterson, 85, Williston, formerly of Bainville, Mont., died Dec. 4, 2000, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Everson Memorial Chapel, Williston, with burial in Bainville Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; two sons, Walter, Williston, and Richard, Culbertson, Mont.; daughters, Alice Peterson, and Linda, Williston; one brother, Robert, Williston; several grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Marie Schaeffer
MCCLUSKY -- Marie "Mary" Schaeffer, 93, McClusky, died Dec. 6, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, McClusky, with burial in McClusky cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky. Marie "Mary" Barbara Nigrin was born Dec. 8, 1906, at Cleveland, Ohio. She was the daughter of Gottleib and Anna (Benisek) Nigrin. The family moved to Omaha, Neb., and then to McClusky. She married Emmanuel Schaeffer on July 13, 1928, in McClusky. They lived and farmed south of McClusky. They moved into McClusky in 1938, and owned and operated Schaeffer's Bar for many years, retiring in 1973. Emanuel died July 30, 1975. Mary continued to live in McClusky. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, flowers and visiting with family and friends. She was a member of United Methodist Church and its women's groups. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and Senior Citizens in McClusky. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Eloise and Lynn A. Vietz, and Violet and Lawrence Reiswig, all of Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, Floyd and Lucille Schaeffer, Hazen; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, John Nigrin; two sisters, Anna Lasher and Louise Roth; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Frank John Stockert
Frank John Stockert, 95, Mandan, died Dec. 6, 2000, in a Mandan nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery, at 2 p.m. Saturday. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will begin at 7 tonight. Visitation will continue until service time at the funeral home. Frank was born on Aug. 8, 1905, to Raphael M. and Margaret (Bast) Stockert, in Speier, Russia. The Stockert family emigrated to the United States in 1910, originally moving to the New England area, and several years later, homesteaded in Morton County, north of Solen. Frank married Marie Froehlich on Sept. 30, 1934, at St. John's Church in Odense. During the Great Depression, he worked wherever he could to support his family. He played saxophone in his two-man band, "Frankie and Johnnie," and worked in the beet fields in eastern Montana until he was hired as an elevator manager in Cartwright. He moved to Solen in 1939 when he became manager of the Solen Equity Exchange and continued to live and work there until his retirement in 1983. Since that time, he has lived at Liberty Heights in Mandan, and more recently, at the Medcenter One Care Center. Frank was a staunch supporter of the Solen community and served as Sioux County Commissioner for many years. He continued civic service with his participation at the Liberty Heights. He took particular pride in raising and lowering the flag at Liberty Heights as a symbol of his citizenship and patriotism. He was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus and the Mandan Elks Fraternity. He enjoyed working close to nature through hunting, wildlife restoration projects and, in particular, his many relaxing hours in the garden. He was well-known on the Mandan Golf Course and took pride in his ability to play golf until age 93. Frank is remembered for his integrity, loyalty, honesty and direct manner. He is survived by one son, the Rev. Harold Stockert, Granville, N.Y.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Eileen and Ray Schmidt, Sharon, Kan., Marilyn and Dan Keller, Bismarck, and Virginia Pinard, Penacook, N.H.; his grandchildren and their families, Doug and Betty Schmidt (Michael, Craig and Matthew), Sharon, Kan., Dan and Dee Schmidt (Kristi and Kyle), Hayes, Kan., Dave and Karen Schmidt, (Katie and Delaney), Fort Worth, Texas, Deanna and Kevin Karst (Kendra and Kyle), Casper, Wyo., and Jay Pinard and Zac Pinard, New Hampshire; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years; an infant son; his parents; one sister, Katherine Borgers; and five brothers, John, Joseph, Alphonse, Carl and Tony.

Alma Thoemke
BEACH -- Alma Thoemke, 86, Beach, died Dec. 7, 2000, in Billings, Mont. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Beach, with burial in Lutheran Cemetery, Beach. She is survived by one son, Ronald, Beach; and two daughters, Arlene Thompson, Rapid City, S.D., and Rita Moore, Bozeman, Mont. (Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Beach)

Bernice M. Umber
Bernice M. "Bea" Umber, 95, Bismarck, died Dec. 6, 2000, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Walter Schott officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Shields. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. today and will continue one hour before services, all at the funeral home. Bea was born June 12, 1905, in Conneaut, Ohio, the daughter of Fred W. and Maude G. (Dilley) Neal. She came to North Dakota with her parents in 1907. Bea graduated from Flasher High School in 1925, and began her 50-year teaching career. She continued her education and received her bachelor of science degree at the age of 67 from Mary College. She retired from the Fort Yates School District in 1984, and was called back to teach at Selfridge for several years. She married George H. Umber in 1933. George died Oct. 3, 1973. In 1990, she moved to Liberty Heights in Mandan, and in 1995, to the Karrington in Bismarck. Bea entered Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in August 2000. Bea devoted her life to her family and the service of others. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Shields, National Education Association and North Dakota Education Association. Bea is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Vonny, Bismarck; two daughters and one son-in-law, Letha and Delmar Lewis, Langdon, and Wanda Canada, Bismarck; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and her special friends, Gerry Nowlin, Carrie Weinhandl and Mary Louise Defender-Wilson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Umber; her son, Francis Liebersbach; an aunt, Eva Mae Dilley; and one sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Noralf Nesset. The family prefers memorials to Sunnyside Cemetery or BECEP.

DICKINSON -- Joseph Pechtl, 83, Dickinson, died Dec. 6, 2000, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MST Saturday at ST. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.
