DES LACS -- Dr. Herman R. Rutten, 93, Denver, died Dec. 5, 2000, in Denver. Services willl be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Moore Howard Funeral Home, Denver. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; five sons, John and Tom, both of Devils Lake, Dick, Minot, Don, Woodbury, Minn., and Bob, Bismarck; two daughters, Susan Anderson, Arcata, Calif., and Patricia Helfenstein, Bismarck; three step-children, Fred Lindquist, Pueblo, Colo., Karen Pierson, Niwot, Colo., and Nadine Ligeros, Denver; two sisters, Genevieve Rutten and Mary Miller, both of Devils Lake; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and eight step-grandchildren.

Bernice M. Umber, 95, died Dec. 6, 2000, in a Bismarck care center. Arrangements are pending at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Carolyn J. Mahin
TAPPEN -- Carolyn J. Mahin, 68, Tappen, died Dec. 14, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Faith Evangelical Church, Crystal Springs, with the Rev. David Harriman officiating. Burial will be in Fisher Cemetery, Tappen. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Steele. Carolyn was born Sept. 24, 1932 in Grand Forks, the daughter of Clifton and Annie (Walters) Mathews. She was raised and educated in Grand Forks, graduating from Grand Forks Central. Following graduation she attended Bismarck School of Nursing where she earned her nursing degree. She married Donn Mahin on June 10, 1954 in Grand Forks. Following their marriage they lived on a farm near Tappen. She was employed at Bismarck Hospital and later worked at the State Hospital in Jamestown and Golden Manor in Steele. She was a charter member of Faith Evangelical Church in Crystal Springs, a member of the homemakers club, and on the State Board for Child Evangelism Fellowship. She is survived by her husband, Donn, Tappen; one daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Joel Hasse, Munich; three sons and one daughter-in-law, John Mahin, Brush, Colo., Paul Mahin, Munich, and Aaron and Melissa Mahin, Tappen; seven grandchildren, Melissa and Paul, Kimberly, Nicole and Jason, Dustin, Zeb, Jennifer and Caleb; one great-granddaughter, Alexis; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Clifford and May Mathews, and Walter and Norman Mathews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Helen Metzger
NEW SALEM -- Helen Metzger, 92, New Salem, died Dec. 12, 2000, in New Salem. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST today at First Baptist Church, Hebron, with burial in First United Methodist Cemetery, Hebron. Visitation will be held at the church one hour before services. Helen was born Oct. 4, 1908 at Glen Ullin, to Karl and Rosina (Diede) Miller. She was raised and educated near Glen Ullin. She moved to Hebron and worked for the Columbia Hotel. She married Christ Metzger, Feb. 20, 1926, at Hebron. Following marriage she stayed home and raised the family. She enjoyed sewing, canning and especially baking. In 1953 they moved to Mandan where she worked for the State Industrial School as a cook and later worked at Heartview. They retired and moved to Hebron in 1970, where she enjoyed getting together with friends to play games. Helen also loved the visits from the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In August she entered the Elm Crest Manor at New Salem, where she had resided since. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hebron. She is survived by five daughters and four sons-in-law, Mae and Wilbert Buchli, Hebron, Jane and Adelor Pilon, East Grand Forks, Minn., Rachel Ridgewell, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Elaine and Clarence Titterington, Marysville, Wash., and Marion and Richard Nagel, Bismarck; 15 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers; five sisters; and one son-in-law. (Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron)

Laurence Porsborg
CENTER -- Laurence Porsborg, 77, Center, died Dec. 13, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. CST Saturday, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Center, with the Rev. Jon Erickson officiating. Friends may call at the church after 10:30 a.m. Saturday until the time of service. Laurence was born Sept. 29, 1923 in Oliver County, the son of Nels and Dora (Hagerott) Porsborg. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended rural school south of Center. He took over farming after his father started working for Farmers Union. He married LaVerne Klatt on June 19, 1946 in New Salem. They farmed the Gerald Klatt farm for three years, then moved to his father's farm in 1949. They bought the farm in 1962 and Laurence was still active in the daily operation of the farm until the time of his death. Laurence and LaVerne were members of Christ's Lutheran Church of Churchtown but later transferred to St. Paul Church of Center, where he was still active. Laurence was and had been active in many community organizations, including rural Center school board, Farmers Union and Cenex of New Salem, the Oliver County and the State Historical Societies, the Oliver County Ambulance Board, and the Lions Club until it was no longer active. Whenever someone needed help, Laurence was always there. He is survived by his children, Dorothy Willems and her husband, Gerald, Miles City, Mont., and Dorothy's son, Justin Kessler and stepchildren, Paul, Stephanie, Mary Beth, Mike, Josh and Rebecca Willems and step-grandchildren, Daniel and Christian; Jeanette Bonnet and her husband, Bernell, McClusky, and their children, Bradley and his wife, Tammy, and their children, Kyle, Brian and Hope, and Beverley Faul and her husband, Kendon, and their children, Kody and Shelby; Darlene Sorge and her husband, Edward, Wheatland, Wyo., and their children, Christie and her son Zachary, Tina Taylor and her husband, Jim, and their son, Austin, and stepdaughter, Brittney; Bob and his wife, Karen, Center, and their children, Chad and his wife, MaryJo, and their son, Chance, and Heather Bullinger and her husband, Scott; David and his wife, Karen, Center, and their children, Andrew and Adam; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ken and Darlene ,and Myron and Rosie, all of Mandan; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Mike Tracy, Bismarck, and Marilyn and Gary Litt, Moorhead. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, LaVerne, who died Jan. 2, 1993. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Paul Lutheran Church or the Oliver County Ambulance Service. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Philip Eckroth
Philip Eckroth, 78, Mandan, died Dec. 14, 2000 in a Mandan nursing home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday, with a Parish Vigil at 7 p.m. Sunday evening and a KC Rosary and 4th Degree at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, and a St. Anthony Verein Rosary at 8 p.m. Sunday evening, all at Weigel Funeral Home. Visitation will continue until service time at the funeral home. Philip was born on Jan. 17, 1922 in Mandan, the son of John P. and Flora (Fried) Eckroth. He was raised and educated in Mandan. On Oct. 2, 1945, he married Eva Freidt in New Salem. They both farmed southwest of Mandan until 1961. They moved to Bottineau where he was a park ranger, then moved to Moscow, Idaho, where he was a maintenance supervisor for the University of Idaho and retired in 1987. Then they moved back to Mandan. Philip's kindness and generosity touched the lives of the many people who knew him. Amongst his interests, he loved hunting, fishing, traveling and spending quality time with his family. He had a strong faith and was active in his church. Philip was an active member of the Eagles and Moose Club, St. Anthony Verein, and the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Eva; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Wally and Iris, Lewiston, Idaho, Thomas J. and Betty, Peoria, Ariz., and Juris Wagner, Potlatch, Idaho; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three brothers, Joe, Helena, Mont., John, Coleharbor, and Gary, Boston, Mass.; eight sisters, Monica Paul, Mandan, Frances Paul, Linton, Katherine Schanks, Lindon, Kan., and Mary Eva Phillips, Joseph, Ore., Beatrice Charvat and Margaret Paul, both of Bismarck, Hildegard Henry, Portland, Ore., and Judy Thiel, Harvey. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Larry. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

DEVILS LAKE -- Dorothy G. Franson, 64, Devils Lake, died Dec. 14, 2000 at her home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Burial will be in Valley Grove Lutheran Cemetery, Kloten, N.D. She is survived by her husband, Rodney; one daughter, Lonna Streifel, Harvey; one granddaughter; her brother, Bernard Novak, Grafton; and two sisters, Regina Freije, Warroad, Minn., and Judy Fuller, Mandan. DICKINSON -- Harold "Hoxie" Freed, 90, Dickinson, died Dec. 15, 2000 in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday, at St. Luke's Home, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending with Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Grace E. Kukowski
BEACH -- Grace E. Kukowski, 90, Kennebee, S.D., and formerly of Beach, died Dec. 14, 2000 in a Chamberlain, S.D. hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Monday, at United Community Church, Beach, with burial in Beach Cemetery. She is survived by her daughter, Anna Mae Streitz, Kennebee; her sister, Florence Otten, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. (Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Beach)

MINOT -- Milton J. "Mickey" Ofsthun, 66, Minot, died Dec. 12, 2000 in a Minot hospital. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Babcock, Creswell, Ore., Kim Warwick, Reardan, Wash., and Julia O'Reilly, Spokane, Wash.; her sons, David, Fall Creek, Ore., Michael, Davenport, Wash., Mark, Wichita, Kan., and Darren, Imperial Beach, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, two sisters, Marjorie Bunce, Bismarck, and Irene Bertsch, Minot; and two brothers, Harold, Minot, and Clarence, Golden Valley, Minn. DICKINSON -- Alvin Sabrosky, 75, Dickinson, died Dec. 14, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MST Tuesday, at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson. He is survived by his wife, Teddy; two sons, Kirt, Killdeer, and Delry, Dickinson; two daughters, Sharon Woods, St. George, Utah, and Sarita Stolt, Billings, Mont.; two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Collins, Alsip, Ill., and Ellen Kulish, Dickinson. Jacob Allen Stover
WILLISTON -- Jacob Allen Stover, infant son of Jim and Renae Stover, Williston, died Dec. 14, 2000 in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Williston, with burial in Garden of the Angels in Riverview Cemetery, Williston. He is survived by his parents, Jim and Renae; two sisters, McKayla and Christine Stover, both at home; his grandparents, Willie and Irene Koch, Williston, Mervin and Kay Stover, Williston, and Harlan and Wendy Johnson, Minot; and his great-grandparents, Andrew and Christine Koch, Belfield, Doris Olson, Williston, and Alice Johnson, Tolna. Henrietta Tellinghusen
Henrietta "Hattie" Tellinghusen, 87, Bismarck, died Dec. 14, 2000 in a local hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Tim Jenks officiating. Spring burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Sunday, and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, and one hour prior to the service at the church. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service. Hattie was born Aug. 30, 1913 at Stanton, the daughter of Tobias and Margaret (Benker) Bohrer. She attended Bethany College in Minnesota and business colleges in Minot and Bismarck. At the age of 35, Hattie moved to Bismarck and worked for the Burleigh County Agent, prior to this position, she had worked for the County Agent's office in Stanton. Hattie married Rueben Tellinghusen on March 15, 1941 at Bismarck. From 1943-1946, Hattie worked numerous camp civilian positions in Texas and Alabama, while Reuben was in military service. In 1946, Hattie and Reuben returned to Bismarck. Hattie was then employed by Hedahls. Hattie was instrumental in forming the Bismarck Hospital Guild in the 1950's and served as its president in 1957 and 1959. Hattie's loves were family, friends, neighbors and her church. She was always around in times of need and enjoyed organizing family activities. Everyone will miss the LOVE she showed everyone through her cards, notes and letters. Her surviving family is husband, Reuben; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Vernon and Erma Bohrer, Napoleon, and Wilbur "Bill" and Lupi Bohrer, Dickinson; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Bohrer, Bismarck; two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law, Kenneth and Sue Tellinghusen, Pennsylvania, and Bob Streed, Fargo; and nieces and nephews and their spouses and children, JoAnne Senechal, Minnesota, Valene Anderson, North Dakota, Sandy Opatril, Minnesota, Jackie Perkins, Minnesota, Marilyn Kipp, North Dakota, Douglas Bohrer, California, Linda Retzlaff, North Dakota, Terry Bohrer, Colorado, Sheila Friestad, North Dakota, Laura Henry, California, Tobias Bohrer, North Dakota, Margaret Bohrer, North Dakota, Heidi Bohrer, Arizona, Jessie Bohrer, North Dakota, Jill Bohrer, Arizona, Byron Bohrer, North Dakota, David Bohrer, Arizona, Mary Louise Puetz, North Dakota, Richard Bohrer, North Dakota, Albert Narducci, Pennsylvania, and Mary Ann Tellinghusen and Donna Tellinghusen, both of Pennsylvania. Alysha M. Vetter, three months, died Dec. 13, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Church of the Ascension, with the Rev. Marvin Klemmer officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, and noon-8 p.m. Sunday, with a rosary and prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Alysha was born Sept. 11, 2000 in Bismarck to Scott Vetter and Christina Schell. She loved to watch hunting, fishing and football with her dad. Alysha also enjoyed going to the store shopping with her mother and spending quality time with her grandparents and everyone who knew and loved her. Alysha is survived by her parents, Scott Vetter and Chrissy Schell, Bismarck; her grandparents, Barb and Calvin Schell, Bismarck, Darlene and Jerry Vetter, Bismarck; her great-grandparents, John A. Vetter, Linton, Ben and Maggie Striefel, Strasburg, Regina Schell, Mercer, Elmer and Erna Broneske, Denver, Colo.; her aunts, Sandy and husband Duane Nieuwsma, Herreid, S.D., Melissa and John Sinclair, Bismarck, Rebecca Schell, Bismarck; her uncles, Shannon Vetter and wife Cathy, Bismarck, Craig Volk and wife, Amy, Bismarck; also five very close cousins. She is preceded in death by her great-grandmother Rose Vetter; and two great-grandfathers, Pius A. Volk and Albert Schell. (Bismarck Funeral Home)
