Melvin E. Skager
Melvin E. Skager, 83, Mandan, died Dec. 15, 2000, in his home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Revs. Charles Axness and Richard Hagestuen officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 707 and American Legion Post 40. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a prayer service will begin at 7:30 tonight. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour before services. Melvin Emanuel was born Dec. 5, 1917, in Oliver County, the son of Carl and Mary Alma (Linn) Skager. He was raised and educated in Oliver County. In November 1940, Melvin became the first draftee from Oliver County to serve a year in the military service of his country. He was waiting his discharge papers at Fort Riley, Kan., when on Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor. He married Marion Elsa Woehler on March 14, 1942, in Junction City, Kan. His company was then sent to England until November 1942, when they were sent to Oran in Algeria, Africa, where they served under Gen. Dwight Eisenhower and Gen. Mark Clark. In September 1943 they were sent to participate in the invasion of Italy at Salerno. When the war was over, he had achieved the rank of technical sergeant and was awarded the European Theater of Operations service ribbons with five battle stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged in June 1945. After three years as a civilian, he joined the North Dakota National Guard. During the Korean Conflict, he transferred to the North Dakota Air National Guard, and in May of 1951 his squadron was called to active duty with the U.S. Air Force. In June 1952 he was honorably discharged and returned to the North Dakota National Guard until 1954. In 1960 he joined the Air Force Reserve and on his birthday, Dec. 5, 1977, he was honorably discharged with the rank of master sergeant after 28 years of active and reserve service to his country. He was employed with Amoco Refinery in Mandan for 23 years, retiring Feb. 1, 1978. Mel was an avid sportsman, and enjoyed baseball and horseshoes. Oldtimers will remember his baseball prowess as a member of the Mandan Trainers, amateur baseball team. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, and camping with his grandchildren was always a joy. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Elks and the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Marion; his children, Judi Harm and her husband, Larry, Mandan, John and his wife, Shirley, Federal Way, Wash., SuEllen Skager and her special friend, D.J. Miller, Sioux Falls, S.D.; eight grandchildren, Terry Harm, Kim Vega, Craig Harm, Jodi Harm, Cori Harm, Shawn Skager, Farah Skager and Tom Skager; and 10 great-grandchildren; six sisters and four brothers-in-law, Agnes and Gilbert Sanden, Detroit Lakes, Minn., Elaine and William Lehmkuhl, Roundup, Mont., Irene and Orlyn Slinde, Albert Lea, Minn., Betty Knaub, Froeberg, Mont., Zelda and Leonard Graton, Yuma, Colo., Clarice Baker, Sand Coulee, Mont.; and one brother and two sisters-in-law, Maynard and Arlene, Billings, Mont., and Evangeline Skager, Babbitt, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Milton and Marvin; and one sister, Dora. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to First Lutheran Church, Mandan, or the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.

WILLISTON -- Helen S. Westenmayer, 84, Williston, died Dec. 11, 2000, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Williston, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Williston. She is survived by three daughters, Louise Bowman, Cannon Falls, Minn., Barbara Hansen, Grinnell, Iowa, and Joanette Wagner, Charleston, W.V.; one sister, Elizabeth Young, Williston; eight grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren. Alysha M. Vetter
Alysha M. Vetter, 3 months, died Dec. 13, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Church of the Ascension, with the Rev. Marvin Klemmer officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, where a rosary and prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Alysha was born Sept. 11, 2000, in Bismarck to Scott Vetter and Chrissy Schell. She loved to watch hunting, fishing and football with her dad. Alysha also enjoyed going to the store shopping with her mother and spending quality time with her grandparents and everyone who knew and loved her. Alysha is survived by her parents, Scott Vetter and Chrissy Schell, Bismarck; her grandparents, Barb and Calvin Schell, Bismarck, Darlene and Jerry Vetter, Bismarck; her great-grandparents, John A. Vetter, Linton, Ben and Maggie Striefel, Strasburg, Regina Schell, Mercer, Elmer and Erma Broneske, Denver; her aunts, Sandy and husband Duane Nieuwsma, Herreid, S.D., Melissa and John Sinclair, Bismarck, Rebecca Schell, Bismarck; her uncles, Shannon Vetter and wife Cathy, Bismarck, Craig Volk and wife, Amy, Bismarck; also five very close cousins. She is survived by three sons, James, Minot, Richard, Grand Forks, and Dr. Robert, Bismarck; two daughters, Jean Mammel, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Eloise Perry, Manhatten, Nev.; one brother, Ingvald Mortenson, Kelliher, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. George Oxentenko
George Oxentenko, 90, Bismarck, went to be with the Lord whom he loved on April 30, 2000, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, where he had been a resident for one month. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Evangel Temple Assembly of God, Bismarck, with the Revs. Trent Redmann and Lloyd Jorgenson officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue one hour prior to services, at the church. George was born June 22, 1909, the son of Fred and Irene Oxentenko. He attended school in Kief, N.D., and graduated from North Central Bible University in Minneapolis. He married Adeline Melom on April 15, 1941 in McClusky. They lived in Minneapolis for a time where George founded George Oxentenko Painting in 1937. George and Adeline moved to Bismarck in 1943, where he founded Oxentenko, Inc., which is now owned by second and third generations. He was known for his work philosophy of quality workmanship and service with the guarantee that every job he did, he did well. His word was his bond. Sixty years later the company has expanded to include projects throughout the Midwest. He loved having a big garden and enjoyed caring for his flowers. George had many birdhouses in his backyard where he enjoyed watching and feeding the many birds that visited. He had an appreciation for good music and enjoyed playing the violin. George loved his family very much and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He loved having coffee and cookies with his kids, and his great-grandchildren made him laugh and smile often. George left a wonderful Christian heritage to his family. We will miss him greatly and look forward to seeing him again in Heaven. He will be lovingly missed by his wife, Adeline; his children, Cordell and Phyllis Oxentenko, and Coreen and Don Redmann, all of Bismarck; his grandchildren, Andy and Sheree Wesely, Reno, Nev., Tom and Shellae Backman, Bismarck, Shawn and Amy Oxentenko, Rochester, Minn., Dan and Tammy Sipes, Bismarck, and Trent and Melinda Redmann, Rosemount, Minn.; his great-grandchildren, Drew, Nicholas and Natasha Wesely, Tatiana Backman, and Caitlin, Caja and Joshua Sipes; his brother and sister-in-law, Victor and Sharon Oxentenko; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and one brother.
