Rosemary Brekke
Rosemary Brekke, (79) one of the area’s few remaining female WW II Veterans, died at her home in St. Peter; she had been under hospice care since early July. Services will be held Saturday; November 22, 2003, 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Peter. Visitation will be Friday at St. Peter Funeral Home-Klein Chapel from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and continues one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Burial will be at Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, Milnor, N.D.
Rosemary was born December 16, 1923, in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England. She was one of six daughters of Clara Madalene Squires of Edgware, Middlesex, five of whom served in the Royal Air Force’s WAAF detachment. Rosemary was a wireless operator, part of the time in Whitehall at Winston Churchill’s war ministry where she intercepted German bomber codes. Her father, William Henry Peters of Birkenhead, was gassed while serving in France During WW I, and died when Rosemary was only five years old. Her mother then moved the family to London where she had relatives. Rosemary, often in poor health as a child, spent many years as a ward of the British welfare system. In recent years she wrote a memoir about her youth, For Care and Protection. On November 29, 1945, she was married to Cpl. Gerald Brekke of the U.S. 8th Air Force, on detached service with the U.S. Army newspaper, The Star and Stripes, at St. Laurence Whitchurch, Little Stanmore, London. It was at this church where Handel composed much of his music.
Rosemary attended Gustavus Adolphus College and in 1973 earned her B.A. degree in physical education. She was employed by the St. Peter School District for 15 years as a teacher’s aid, where her precise English speech was used to good advantage to help students who had problems with pronunciation. She loved music, and for more than 30 years sang soprano with her beloved Trinity Church Choir, leaving it only after poor health made it impossible for her to continue. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a patron of several local charities.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Gerald Brekke, emeritus professor, Gustavus Adolphus College, children-Wayne (Sandy) Brekke, Mankato; Susan (David) Benson, Aitkin; Sandra Brekke Georgacarakos, St. Peter; William (Jeanny) Brekke, Melissa (Gary) Speiss, Vancouver, Wash.; and John Brekke, Hermosa Beach, Calif. She requested that her five grandsons, Jesse Benson, Minneapolis, Nikolas and Alexander Georgacarakos, St. Peter, and Gerald and Anders Brekke, Mankato, served as pallbearers. She had seven granddaughters; Maren Leghari of Rahim Yar Khan, Pakiston; Celeste Benson, Madison, Wis.; Kjersti Brekke, Mendota Heights, Stephanie Klinder, Pemberton; Shelley Speiss, Rochester, N.Y.; and Christine and Angela Brekke of London, England; brother-in-law; Roger Brekke and wife, Sharon, Lisbon, N.D.; Norma Brekken, Karen, Dan, and Anna Krause, Milnor, N.D.; Grant, Peder and John Gulleson and families, Rutland, N.D. In England, she is survived by three sisters and their families; Mrs. Madge Cross of Wellingsbrough, North Hants; Mrs. Catherine Batten of Hemel Hempstead, Herts; and Mrs. Ivy Wilson of New Earswick, York.
Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Marjorie Perry and Margaret Peters; and sister-in-law, Sonja Brekke Gulleson.
Rosemary’s greatest passions were her garden and her poetry. The St. Peter Herald once carried a story about the beautiful English garden she created at her home, a fitting tribute to her skill with flowers. She was deeply loved by her family and friends who respected her uniquely British sense of humor and her ingrained sense of fair play, which she taught to all her children. An amateur poet with several published poems, one of her most recent entitled, “The Sun”, concludes with what may be an apt epitaph:
When the day is over,
And the shadows begin to creep
The sun draws back the curtain
And lays us down to sleep.
Deeply religious, she read regularly from the family Bible, a gift from her mother-in-law. One of her favorite selections was the 46th Psalm, which reads, in part:
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble...
The Lord of hosts is with us,
The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah”
Memorials are preferred the the St. Peter Area Friends of Hospice.
