Robert L. Howe, 68, Grand Rapids, Minn., died Jan. 25, 2001, in a Duluth, Minn. care center. Loring Dahl Knecht
Loring Dahl Knecht, 79, Northfield, Minn., formerly of Bismarck, died Jan. 16, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; one son, Leif, Northfield; one daughter, Genevieve Williams, Marietta, Ga.; two grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and five step-children.

ZAP -- Lawrence Navratil, 60, Zap, died Jan. 25, 2001, in the Hazen hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Tuesday at Emanual Lutheran Church, Zap. Further arrangements are pending at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

He is survived by one brother, Russell, Beaverton, Ore.; three sisters, Doris Orefic, Beaverton, Marion Armstrong, Albuquerque, N.M., and Shirley Vicarie, Tacoma, Wash.

JAMESTOWN -- Richard Rott, 85, Jamestown, died Jan. 25, 2001, in a Jamestown care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown, with burial in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown. He is survived by one son, Michael, Minneapolis; three daughters, Elaine Knuth, Jamestown, Lucy Rova, Mandan, and Diane Balster, Fargo; two sisters, Frieda Teske and Emma Hill, both of Jamestown; one brother, Edwin, Crystal Springs; two stepsisters, Maggie Daugs and Amelia Schauer, both of California; a half-brother, Gerhardt Dockter, California; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

HETTINGER -- Shirley V. Royseth, 84, Hettinger, died Jan. 26, 2001, in her home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Monday at Hettinger Lutheran Church, with burial in Hettinger Cemetery. She is survived by one daughter, Irene Spracklin, Denver City, Texas; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Loretta Stenberg, Hettinger; and three brothers, Warren Moe, St. Onge, S.D., George Moe, St. Paul, Minn., and Norman Moe, Regent. Mary M. Schreiner
HUFF -- Mary M. Schreiner, 81, Huff, died Jan. 25, 2001, in her home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Huff, with the Rev. Al Leary officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. Monday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday, followed by a parish rosary at 8. Mary was born April 22, 1919, in Huff, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Howarth) Leidenix. She was raised and educated in the Huff area. Mary moved to Washington in 1942, and worked for Northwest Chair Manufacturing Co. in Tacoma, Wash., for seven years. She married Ben Schreiner on Jan. 10, 1948. They returned to Huff in 1954, and she has resided there since. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Wanda, Huff; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Gary Miller, Mandan; four grandchildren, Terry and his wife, Teri Schreiner, Traci Schreiner, Jeremy Miller and Ryan Miller; two brothers, Frank, Huff, and John, McLaughlin, S.D. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ben, who died in 1980, and two sisters, Irene Gill and Elsie Hilfer.

Oliver Sund
CLEVELAND -- Oliver Sund, 89, Cleveland, died Jan. 25, 2001, in the Jamestown care center. Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, Cleveland, with burial in Cleveland Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Ardena; three stepsons, Lester Larson, Cleveland, Terry Larson, Grand Junction, Colo., Bill Larson, Milnor; three stepdaughters, Marjorie Vandeberghe, Cleveland, Janice Haagenson, Loveland, Colo., and Deborah Johnsen, Thompson; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Laura Green, Enderlin. Michael Tschosik
STRASBURG -- Michael Tschosik, 70, Mandan, died Jan. 25, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by one brother, Pius, Oregon; and two sisters, Rose Kallberg and Helen Tschosik, both California. (Myers Funeral Home, Linton)

Hazel L. Weiss
Hazel L. Weiss, 93, Bismarck, died Jan. 26, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at noon Monday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Revs. Charles Heidt and John Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. Sunday at Boelter Funeral Home, where a vigil will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. Hazel was born April 7, 1907, at Hazelton, the daughter of John and Katherine (Chalfin) Baker. She was raised and educated in Hazelton, graduating from Hazelton High School. She attended Mankato College in Minnesota, where she met her husband-to-be, Earl Weiss. They were married Oct. 13, 1928, in Hazelton. They moved to the Baker farm near Hazelton, where they lived for five years. They moved to Bismarck where Hazel resided until her death. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Neil Fricke, and Kathryn and Lyle Bickel, all of Bismarck, and Patricia and Jack Drumheller, Bozeman, Mont.; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Earl, Bismarck, Robert and Millie, Deer River, Minn., Frederick and Sandy, Fort Collins, Colo., Paul, Churchton, Md., and Kerry and Michele, Huntingtown, Md.; 23 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Grace Thomason, Greene, Iowa, and Christine Balkenende, Marble Rock, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, in 1998; three sisters; and one brother. Memorials are preferred to St. Mary's Church or the Baptist Home.

Hilmer Quast
GOLDEN VALLEY -- Hilmer Quast, 81, Golden Valley, died Jan. 24, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Saturday at Golgotha Lutheran Church, Golden Valley, where he was a lifetime member. The Rev. Richard Melchert will be officiating. Burial will be Monday in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. today at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah, and will continue from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at Golgotha Llutheran Church. Hilmer was born Nov. 8, 1919, the oldest child of Fred and Mary (Radke) Quast, 5 miles south of Golden Valley. He attended country school and worked for many neighbors. He entered the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936, and was stationed in Priesthood, Idaho. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942, and was honorably discharged in 1945 as a staff sergeant. He married Elsie Hinsz on Dec. 2, 1945. From 1948-1950, he was in partnership with Albert Hoffman and owned the Main Bar in Zap. He and Elsie owned and operated the Valley Bar in Golden Valley, retiring in 1988. He served on the Golgotha Church council, secretary of Community Club, treasurer of Fireman's Club, 12 years on the school board, and many years on the Mercer County Zoning Board. Hilmer liked to visit with people, watch baseball and play pinochle. Hilmer is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elsie; one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Bonnie, Mandan; three grandchildren, Miranda, Michael and Jared, who were the joy of his life and who will miss their funny Grandpa; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Clarence and Lorraine, Beulah, and Hubert and Corrinne, Golden Valley; one brother-in-law, Oscar Boehler, Hazen; and one sister-in-law, Vivian Quast, Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George and Eldor; and two sisters, Evelyn Wagner and Dorothy Boehler.

Jacob Rieger
DEVILS LAKE -- Jacob Rieger, 85, Devils Lake, died Jan. 24, 2001, in the Devils Lake hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by two sons, Dan, Grand Forks, and Duane, Devils Lake; two daughters, Darla Obenchain, Devils Lake, and DeVonna Woodstrom, Manvel; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Leo, Grafton, and Paul, Petaluma, Calif. Marie Schwarting
NEW SALEM -- Marie Schwarting, 85, New Salem, died Jan. 23, 2001, in the New Salem care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST today at Peace Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be in Peace Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church. Marie was born Oct. 28, 1915, in Borgetarro, Italy, the daughter of GioVanni and Teresa (Cocci) DeVincenzi. When she was 14 years old, her family moved to London, England, where she worked as a waitress. She met LeRoy Schwarting in London's Hyde Park and they were married on Aug. 18, 1945. She and LeRoy took over the family farm northwest of New Salem. They retired and moved into town in 1979. She was a lifetime member of American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of Peace Church. Marie is survived by her husband and best friend, LeRoy; her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Floyd Freiberg, Fond Du Lac, Wis.; her son, Dwight, New Salem; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, Ray Schwarting and his wife, Carol, New Salem; her sister-in-law, Nora Klusmann, New Salem; and many nieces and nephews, including her niece, Linda Ash and her husband, Martin, of London. Marie was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Clark; one sister, Louise; two brothers, Dominico and Cesara; and her brother-in-law, Ervin Klusmann.

Annabelle Stockie
RICHARDTON -- Annabelle Stockie, 77, Richardton, died Jan. 23, 2001, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Friday at Sacred Heart Monastery, Richardton, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Richardton. She is survived by three sons, Larry, Cornelius, Ore., David, Butte, Mont., and Donald, Absarokee, Mont.; two daughters, Candace Hecker, Miles City, Mont., and Susan Enderle, Richardton; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Adeline Erdle, Richardton, and Shirley Foreman, Greencastle, Pa.; and one brother, James Magelky, Bismarck. BOWMAN -- Leroy Van Eckhout, 58, Bowman, died Jan. 25, 2001, in the Hettinger care center after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Saturday at Bowman Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, June; one daughter, Laura Van Eckhout, Bowman; his parents, Cornelius and Doris Van Eeckhout, Drake; one brother, Robert Van Eeckhout, Dickinson; and two sisters, Janice Green, Manito, Ill., and Ruth Goovert, Drake. Regina V. Yellow Earrings
FORT YATES -- Regina V. Tuske Yellow Earrings, 65, Fort Yates, died Jan. 23, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Fort Yates, with the Rev. John Floberg officiating. Burial will be in Reed Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-3:30 p.m. Monday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. A visitation and wake begins at 5 p.m. Monday at the church, followed by a prayer service at 7. Regina was born Aug. 7, 1935, at Fort Yates, to Charles and Rebecca (Medicine Stone) Tuske. She was raised and educated in Fort Yates. She attended college in Grand Forks and Nashville, Tenn. She worked as a BIA secretary, dorm matron, FYPD radio operator, Standing Rock Ambulance Service EMT, and was a former Tribal Council Woman. Regina was married to Oliver M. Black Hoop I from 1956-1978, and had seven daughters. In 1982 she married John D. Yellow Earrings. Regina enjoyed cooking, playing bingo, and visiting with her many friends. She is survived by her husband, John; seven daughters, Olivia Kuntz, Mandan, Clarinda Foss, Bismarck, Robert and George Gipp, Cannon Ball, Patricia Black Hoop, Lola and Tom Hinsley, Sandra Black Hoop, and Laurie Black Hoop, all of Fort Yates; two adopted sons, Benjamin Lone Bear, New Town, and Lee Fox Jr., Parshall; 28 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gloria Tuske, Fort Yates, and Luella and Gordon DeCory, Rosebud, S.D.; and one adopted brother, Leonard Gohl. Regina was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Larry and Maynard Tuske; and two sisters, Catherine Big Eagle and Laura Tuske.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; two sons, Darrin, Severn, Md., and Bradlee, Horace; three sisters, Eldora Miller, New Llano, La., Cathy Mindt, Goodrich, and Carol Zumbaum, Kintyre; and one brother, Richard, Goodrich.
