Clifford Martin, 86, Bismarck, formerly of Washburn, died Feb. 25, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn.

Gayle McPherson
WILLISTON -- Gayle McPherson, 60, Bismarck, formerly of Williston, died Feb. 20, 2000, in Apache Junction, Ariz. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Williston. Burial will be at a later date in Valley City.
She is survived by her husband, Jim; two sons, Scott, Williston, and Mark, Fargo; two daughters, Loree Olson, Williston, and Kris McPherson, Kalispell, Mont.; three grandchildren; and two brothers, Wayne Schoefter, Denver, and Richard Schoefter, Jamestown. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Alvina Messmer
DICKINSON -- Alvina Messmer, 70, Dickinson, died Feb. 25, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Tuesday, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending with Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.

Evelyn Olsen
Evelyn Marie "Evy" Olsen was born Jan. 1, 1917 at Red Wing, Minn., to Arthur William and Edith Margaret (Archer) Olson. The family moved to Finley and later Hope, N.D., where Evy graduated from high school in 1935. During her high school years, she operated a hamburger stand where everything sold for a nickel. Following graduation, she began nurse's training at the Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, Minn. She graduated in 1938 with one of the last classes to have the signatures of the Mayo Brothers on her diploma. She then began working as a surgical nurse in the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat operating room at the Worrall Hospital in Rochester. In 1942 she went to New York for a post graduate degree in her special area and returned to Rochester. She was called by the Red Cross to enlist in the Navy during World War II. Evy served in the Oakland, Pearl Harbor, Philadelphia and Long Beach Navy hospitals in the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat surgical wings for 10 years as a lieutenant.
In 1952 she moved to Hettinger, N.D., and purchased a building, establishing the Knotty Pine Drive Inn with her partner Julie Merte. They operated the business until 1975. She worked at Hillcrest Care Center in Hettinger, traveled in the winter months and worked seasonally at Tucson Medical Center.
Evy was active in the Hettinger community and was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, the American Legion and Auxiliary, the Methodist Church, the Hettinger Chamber of Commerce and the Yellowstone Trail Association over the years. She would help by traveling to many communities along U.S. Highway 12 collecting dues and promoting the usage of that route to the west. She particularly enjoyed athletic activities, bowling, golfing and learning to swim at age 61.
Evy passed away Feb. 24, 2000, in the Hettinger medical center.
Sharing her life have been her brothers, Arthur H. Olsen, Billings, Mont., Maynard A. Olson and Elmer J. "Bibs" Olson, both of Helena, Mont.; and Robert C. Olson, Bowman; one sister, Adele Bennett, Bowman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are being planned for early May, 2000, with the Evanson-Jensen Walby Chapel, Hettinger.
Memorials have been established to the Hettinger Country Club or West River Regional Medical Center.

Blackie Singer
Arlo J. "Blackie" Singer, 62, Bismarck, died Feb. 25, 2000, at his home of natural causes. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Clarence Swanson
LEMMON, S.D. -- Clarence Swanson, 92, Lemmon, died Feb. 23, 2000, in the Hettinger medical center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday, at Prairie Hills Church of God, Lemmon. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Lemmon.
He is survived by his wife, Irma; one son, Arlan, Billings, Mont.; two daughters, Marlene Fred, Minot, and Sheryll Anderson, Billings; one brother, Vernon, Duncanville, Texas; one sister, Ruth Hodgekinson, Rockville, Md.; and 11 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Jolene Hovda
WILLISTON -- Jolene Hovda, 49, Williston, died Feb. 25, 2000, in the Minot hospital. Arrangements are pending at Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Stella Kendall
Stella M. Kendall, 88, Bismarck, died Feb. 24, 2000, in her home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bismarck Funeral Home. Further arrangements are pending.

Victoria Kovash
DICKINSON -- Victoria Kovash, 83, Dickinson, died Feb. 25, 2000, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery, Dickinson.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry; two daughters, Gladys Volesky, Belfield, and Jeannie Geiss, Solen; one son, David, Bismarck; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

Ida Link
HAZEN -- Ida Link, 86, Hazen, died Feb. 26, 2000, in the Beulah nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen. Further arrangements are pending at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.

Clifford Martin
WASHBURN -- Clifford C. Martin, 86, Bismarck, formerly of Washburn, died Feb. 25, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Edwin's Catholic Church, Washburn, with the Rev. Roger A. Synek officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites by Victor B. Wallin Post 12 American Legion, Washburn.
Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and will continue after 6:30 p.m. Monday at the church. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday at the church.
Clifford Charles Martin was born Aug. 16, 1913, at Elgin, Iowa, to Lewis L. and Bertha (Peters) Martin. He moved with his family to Max when he was 3 years old. He grew up at Glenfield, where he graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from December 1940 until May 1945. He served with the 164th Infantry which received the Presidential Unit Citation with Star for campaigns in Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons, Southern Philippines and East Indies.
In 1946, he moved to Washburn, where he was the Standard Oil agent for 27 years. He married Doris Dean on June 26, 1948, at Reynolds. Cliff also was a representative for Nationwide Advertisting for many years. They moved to Bismarck in November 1996.
He was an active member of his community, where he was a 55 years member and past commander of the Washburn American Legion Post, a member of the Washburn Lions Club, St. Thomas Council of the Washburn Knights of Columbus, past member of the Washburn Park Board and the Washburn Fire Department. He was a life member of the 164th Infantry Association of the United States.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; two daughters and one son-in-law, Mary Martin, Grand Forks, and Carol and Mike Wegleitner, Bismarck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Wanda, Little Rock, Ark., and Robert and Gail, Jamestown; six grandchildren, Ryan Martin, Justin Martin, Carrie Martin, Jill Martin, Levi Wegleitner and Brett Wegleitner; and two sisters, Opal Dietrich and Merle Weisz, both of Madison, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Gerald; one sister, Hazel Leininger; and an infant twin brother and sister.

Ronald Meldahl
Ronald Meldahl, 61, Mandan, died Feb. 26, 2000, in his home. Arrangements are pending at Oliver-Nathan Funeral Home, Valley City.

Alvina Messmer
DICKINSON -- Alvina Messmer, 70, Dickinson, died Feb. 25, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Tuesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Jack; one daughter, Wanda Anderson, Dickinson; two sons, Bruce, Dickinson, and Brian, Minot; seven sisters, Ann Hollinger, Seattle, Sue Meissner, Dickinson, Margaret Martin, Mott, Viola Sickler, Gladstone, Christine Messmer, Lemmon, S.D., Janet Sickler, Dickinson, and Charlene Frank, Glendive, Mont.; two brothers, Vic Rohr and Richard Rohr, both of Dickinson; and four grandchildren. (Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson)

Sophie Paluck
BELFIELD -- Sophie Paluck, 92, Dickinson, formerly of Belfield, died Feb. 25, 2000, in a Dickinson care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Tuesday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Belfield, with burial in the church cemetery.
She is survived by one sister, Josephine Malicki, Dickinson. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Blackie Singer
Arlo J. "Blackie" Singer, 62, died Feb. 25, 2000, in his home of natural causes. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. James Sorenson officiating.
Visitation will be from 6-9 tonight, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Arlo Jacob Singer was born July 10, 1937, the son of Jacob and Anna (Schott) Singer. Blackie graduated from Mercer High School in 1955, and from Hanson's body Shop in Fargo in 1965. He married Marlyn Wiedrich on Feb. 13, 1965. Their only child, Denice, was born on July 19, 1967. His best buddy and only grandchild, Matt, was born on Aug. 18, 1992. They were each others idol, or in their words, each others "Ga." He has worked for the city of Bismarck since 1970. Blackie is survived by his wife, Marlyn; one daughter and son-in-law, Denice and Bryan Haag, Bismarck; one grandson, Matthew Jacob Haag, Bismarck; one brother, Myron Gene Singer, Valley City; and one sister, Evelyn Montgomery, Fargo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Mervyn.
