Duane was born July 11, 1931, at New Salem, the son of Joseph and Hilder (Jacobson) Johnson. He received his grade school education at Curlew and Sims schools, and graduated from Almont High School in 1948. Duane married Joan Knudson on June 10, 1953, in Bismarck. They farmed and ranched with his brother, Joel, on the same land as their father and grandfather before them. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting and most particularly, fishing. A wonderful husband, father and grandfather, he delighted in the presence of his family, especially in later years.
