Donald P. Sherman
Funeral services for Donald P. Sherman, 63, Valley City, were held on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 in St. Catherine Catholic Church, Valley City. Reverend Gerard Braun celebrant. Mr. Sherman died Thursday, July 8, 2004 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Donald Paul Sherman, son of Leonard and Evelyn (Ayers) Sherman. Don grew up in Valley City and attended school there. Don graduated from St. Catherine’s High School in Valley City in 1958. Don attended Valley City State University and graduated from there in 1964.
On Februray 10, 1964, he married Glenda Lea Harrison in Valley City. The couple lived in Carson, N.D. for two years and later moved back to Valley City where Don went into business with his family in Sherman Clothiers in Valley City. In 1986 Don went to work in the insurance industry working for different insurance companies throughout the area. Due to his failing health Don retired in 2000. Don was a member of the Valley City Elks, Eagles and KP’s.
He is survived by his wife, Glenda Lea Sherman, Valley City; one son, Paul (Lynette) Sherman, LaMoure; two daughters, Susan (John) Saul, New Rockford, N.D. and Cindy (Paul) Ripplinger, Lisbon; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Dr. John (Jean) Sherman, Colorado Springs, Colo. and Pete (Diane) Sherman, Valley City; two sisters, Ann Albright, Dundee, Michigan and Beth (Dennis) Polito, Merced, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Debbie (Jim) Lochow, Valley City; two brother-in-laws Victor (Caroline) Harrison, Orlando, Fla., James (Marilyn) Harrison, Orlando, Fla.; his mother and father-in-law, Lou and Doug Olgesby, Enderlin, numberous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn and Leonard Sherman, father-in-law Victor Harrison and two grandsons.
Interment at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Valley City.
Peterson-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home, Valley City, was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth I. Smith
A memorial service for Ruth I. Smith, 98, Moorhead, Minn., were held on Friday, July 2, 2004 at the Fairmont, Eventide Retirement Center in Moorhead. Mrs. Smith died Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at the MeritCare Palliative Care Center in Fargo.
Ruth Inona Cox, daughter of William and Nancy Cox was born on September 7, 1905 in Nolanville, Texas. She attended schools in Nolanville and Belton, Texas. As a young adult Ruth lived and worked in Houston until moving to Temple, Texas.
On October 25, 1941, she married Alfred E. “Hy” Smith. She worked as a nurse’s aid. Ruth was actively involved in the First Baptist Church and volunteer organizations in Temple. In June of 2000, Ruth moved to Moorhead, Minn. She resided at the Fairmont Assisted Living Center, Moorhead.
She is survived by her daughter, Portia (Jim) Danielson, Moorhead, Minn.; two grandchildren, one of which is Jana (Troy) Solhjem, McLeod, N.D.; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband.
Interment at Bellwood Memorial Cemetery, Temple, Texas.

Myrtle Stevens
Funeral services for Myrtle Stevens, 93, Kathryn, N.D., were held on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kathryn. Reverend Bradley Edin officiated. Mrs. Stevens died Friday, July 9, 2004 at the Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City.
Myrtle Stevens, daughter of Martin and Anna (Hagen) Thompson was born on December 25, 1910 in Ottertail County, Minn. at Lake Lida. She was baptized on February 19, 1911. At the age of 3, she and her family homesteaded near Beechy, Saskatchewan. She attended school there. Myrtle met Alfred Stevens from Kathryn, N.D., who was working for a farmer near her parent’s farm.
On March 22, 1933, she married Alfred Stevens in Valley City. They lived in Valley City for six years. In 1939, they moved to Nelson Township, Barnes County where they farmed until retiring in 1969 when they moved into Kathryn. Alfred died November 29, 1973. Myrtle continued to make her home in Kathryn until she entered the Sheyenne Care Center in May 2003. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She was a former member of the Sheyenne Valley Lutheran Church, where she was confirmed on March 18, 1951.
She is survived by three sons, Earl (Shirley), Kathryn, James (Virginia), and Merrill (Gladys) all of rural Valley City; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Eileen George, British Columbia and two nephews and one niece. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sons, Milo and Michael, her daughter Joyce, a brother Harris and a sister Marcia Vik.
Interment at Sheyenne Valley Cemetery, rural Kathryn.
Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City, was in charge of arrangements.

Doris E. L. Utke
Funeral services for Doris E. L. Utke, 90, Enderlin, were held on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 in Leonard Lutheran Church, Leonard. Reverend Bob Worner officiated. Mrs. Utke died Friday, July 9, 2004 in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Doris Edith Lillian Lindemann, daughter of Robert and Alvina (Fraedrich) Lindemann was born on April 2, 1914 in rural Enderlin. She attended rural Enderlin School and Enderlin High School.
On October 18, 1936, she married Erwin E. Utke in rural Enderlin. They farmed near Lucca and Enderlin for several years. She was active in SVACA.
She is survived by three sons, Daniel (Yvonne) Enderlin, David (Carolyn), Enderlin, Michael (Donna) Enderlin; four daughters, Alanna (Jim) Woell, Enderlin, Maria Utke, Fayetteville, Ark., Robin (Al) Roder, Denison, Iowa, Suzann (Erik Heinila) Utke, Portland, Ore.; 18 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one brother, Willis (Peggy) San Jose, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers, Verner, Karl, Maynard, Reuben and Kenneth and four sisters, Leona, Esther, Agnes and Alice.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Kenneth Peterson, Jeff Lindemann, Craig Lindemann, Gary Lindemann, Mark Lucio, and Tom Utke.
Music was provided by organist Eileen Geske and soloist Bobby Geske.
Interment at Pontiac Cemetery, rural Enderlin.
Armstrong Funeral Home, was in charge of arrangements.

Elwood A. Anderson
Private services for Elwood A. Anderson, 89, Homeland, Calif., were held. Mr. Anderson died Friday, July 16, 2004 at Hemet Valley Medical Center, Hemet, Calif.
Elwood Arthur Anderson, son of Arthur D. and Susie E. (Wheatley) Anderson was born on April 4, 1915 in Jamestown, N.D.
Mr. Anderson operated Elwood’s Finnish Bath one mile south of Lisbon from 1957 to 1978. He worked as a massage therapist for 45 years.
He is survived by one son, Gene W. Anderson, Homeland, Calif.; two daughters, Claudette Richmon, Redmond, Ore. and Karen Duke, Klamath Falls, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Interment at Eternal Hills Memorial Gardens, Klamath Falls, Ore.
Hemet Valley Mortuary, Hemet, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth E. Gabert
Memorial services for Ruth Elaine (Holt) Gabert, 81, Fountain of the Sun, Mesa, Ariz., were held in Mesa, Ariz., and a graveside service was held in Moses Lake at Pioneer Memorial Gardens on Saturday, June 12, 2004. Mrs. Gabert died Saturday, May 15, 1004 after a long battle with cancer.
Ruth E. Gabert, daughter of Hans and Louisa Holt was born on June 29, 1922 on the family farm in Aliceton Township, Ransom County. She attended school in Aliceton Township and Milnor. She graduated from Mayville Teacher’s College in Mayville, N.D. in 1943.
On May 17, 1943, she married Marvin L. Strode. They farmed in North Dakota before moving to Moses Lake. Wash. in 1950. She was active in church activities and choir at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She taught school in Moses Lake for 25 years at Peninsula Elementary and at Chief Moses and Frontier Junior High Schools. She was widowed in 1969. She married Ray C. Fellows in 1971 and they moved to Arizona in 1976. She was widowed again in 1982. She married Arthur Gabert in 1984 in Mesa. They lived in Fountain of the Sun.
She is survived by her husband, Arthur Gabert, Mesa; one son Gerald M. Strode, Woodinville, Wash.; two daughters, Virginia L. Fields, Kennewick, Wash. and Kathleen L. Goodwin, Walla Walla, Wash.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Arnold Holt, Mesa. She was preceded in death by husbands Marvin Strode and Ray Fellows and her son, Dan Strode in 1974.

Chad L. Pribbenow
Funeral services for Chad L. Pribbenow, 22, Lisbon, were held on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at First United Methodist Church, Enderlin. Reverend Duane Ferrie officiated. Mr. Pribbenow died Saturday, July 17, 2004 in rural Hankinson.
Chad Lee Pribbenow, son of Duane and Florence Pribbenow, was born on October 22, 1981 in Breckenridge, Minn. He attended Enderlin Public School. Chad worked at Fargo Assembly in Lisbon. He participated in the MS Bike Tour for five years.
He is survived by his parents, Duane and Florence Pribbenow, Enderlin; three sisters, DuAnne Stockert, Detroit Lakes, Minn., Buffy (Adrian) Kemnitz, Rosholt, S.D., and Roxanne (Mark) Cox, Berlin, N.D.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Owen Trangsrud, Collin Trangsrud, Keith Pribbenow, Warren Pribbenow, Al Hall and Naomi Hall.
Music was provided by organist Verna Armstrong and soloist Paul Billing.
Interment at Enderlin Cemetery, Enderlin.
Armstrong Funeral Home, Enderlin, was in charge of arrangements.

Gordon W. Graham
Mr. Gordon W. Graham, 81 died Saturday, June 26, 2004 at his residence in Coleridge, Neb.
Gordon Warren Graham, son of Clarence James and Rosina (Warren) Graham, was born on February 5, 1923. In 1927 his family moved to Fortuna, N.D. He attended Lincoln Valley High School until entering the U.S. Army Aircorps during WWII. He served his country until he was discharged, February 5, 1947. After the service, Gordon attended Hansen Mechanical Trade School, Fargo.
On September 29, 1951, he married Gloria Jean Vafed of McLeod, N.D., in Sioux City, Iowa. They lived in the Hartington and Coleridge areas where he farmed until 1957. He also worked for several local businessmen. In the early 1970s he was hired as Deputy Sheriff in Cedar County, where he worked for eight years. Gordon then worked as Cedar County Sheriff for 12 years before retiring. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartington, Coleridge American Legion Post #114 and the Nebraska Sheriff’s Association.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria, Coleridge; daughter, Rozanne (Dan Blegen) Graham, Minneapolis; one son, Gary (Cindy) Graham, Hartington; four grandchildren; two sisters, Clarice (Irvin) Holm, Hartington and Evis Olson, Walla Walla, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, David Olson.
