KULM -- Mildred Anderson, 93, Kulm, died July 3, 2000 in the Wishek nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Kulm Baptist Church, with burial in Swede Township Cemetery, rural Kulm. She is survived by one daughter, Marlys Arnold, Las Vegas, Nev.; a son, Andy Anderson, Kulm; two grandsons and five great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Caroline Lindgren, Rose Lindgren and Esther Lindgren, all of Kulm. Wilbur Bauer
Wilbur "Bill" Bauer, 82, Bismarck, died peacefully at his home in Bismarck on July 2, 2000. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bismarck Funeral Home with the Rev. Clyde Leimberer officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home and will continue at the funeral home on Thursday until the time of the service. Wilbur was born Jan. 8, 1918 on the homestead farm in Malcom Township, McLean County. He was the son of Johannes and Caroline (Gantner) Bauer. He grew up there and graduated from Coleharbor High School in 1938. Wilbur married Lillie Johnson of Tuttle on Aug. 15, 1940. They lived on his parents' farm before moving to Bismarck where Wilbur worked at Montgomery Wards in the tire sales department. In 1956, he joined the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company as a representative selling farm and truck tires until his retirement in 1980. Wilbur developed many lasting friendships through his work travels. Retirement brought more traveling around the country, visiting friends and relatives, attending glassware conventions and stopping at unknown places, looking for the next carnival glass treasure. Wilbur also enjoyed collecting and building trains. He loved his home and caring for his yard and gardens. Wilbur was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He belonged to the Bismarck-Mandan Elks Lodge No. 1199 for 51 years. He also belonged to the Eagles Club in Bismarck. He enjoyed the activities and friends he met there. He and Lillie liked to go out for dinner and dancing. Wilbur is survived by his two daughters, Carmen Woodmansee, Bismarck, and Jackie Bauer, Seattle, Wash.; one grandson, Scott Woodmansee and his wife, Kelly, Bismarck; one sister, Hulda Schaible, Bismarck; his sister-in-law, Hilda Bauer, Garrison; many nieces and nephews, including Karen and Tom Weigel, Bismarck, and his wife Lillie's extended family. He is preceded in death by his wife, Lillie; his parents, five sisters and four brothers. The family prefers memorials to the Baptist Home. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Ronald M. Benton
Ronald M. Benton, 57, Ethete, Wyo., and formerly of Minot, died July 1, 2000 at his home. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, both at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. He is survived by his daughters, Rhonda Schweitzer and Jennifer Arndt; five grandchildren; his mother, Jennie Lang; his brothers, Warren Benton, Perry Benton, Gary and Brad Benton; his sisters, Eline Kunkle, Vivian Bradwisch, Lenor Zietz and Iris Gallegan. Helen Dupuy
Helen Dupuy, 87, Mandan, died July 3, 2000 in a Mandan care center. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Bismarck Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cimarron, Kan. Helen dearly loved her family and enjoyed visiting with them at home, she did an excellent job of raising her sons as a widow. She enjoyed the Mandan Care Center personnel who gave her wonderful care and attention. She is survived by two sons, Nathan and wife Pat Osbourn, Bismarck, Dennis Osbourn and friend JoAnn Keeler, Franktown, Colo.; three grandchildren, Lisa Kittleson, St. Louis Park, Minn., Sandy Spesshardt, Everett, Wash.; and one great-granddaughter, Katie Kittleson, St. Louis Park. She is preceded in death by her husband, Russell Osbourn and Jack Dupuy; her parents, three sisters and two brothers. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Leo Paul Ernest Fernow
Leo Paul Ernest Fernow, 91, Pelican Rapids, Minn., and formerly of Enderlin died June 30, 2000 in Sherman Oaks, Calif. hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Enderlin, with burial in Enderlin. He is survived by two sons, Wally Fernow, Bismarck, and Rodney Fernow, Enderlin; three daughters, Elaine Rohde, Sherman Oaks, Calif., Carole Gulland, Mountainair, N.M., and Bonnie Carlson, Alexandria, Minn.; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Laurena Babey, Las Cruces, N.M., Cecelia Oliphant, Canton, S.D., and Gertrude Grieve, ST. Elaine Gadney, 92, Alexandria, Minn., died July 4, 2000 in the New Rockford nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock.

JAMESTOWN -- Charles "Chuck" Gefroh, 57, Jamestown, died July 1, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie; one daughter, Kelly Spell, Houston, Texas; five brothers, Leo, Bismarck, Eugene, Hague, Al, Chandler, Ariz., Dan, Bismarck, and Leroy, Watertown, S.D.; three sisters, Rose Hulm, Linton, Janice Heidrich, Strasburg, and Alice Burgad, Bismarck. MINOT -- Calvin Hildebrand, 63, Minot, died July 3, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Minot, with burial in Rosehill Memorial Park. MINOT -- Bonnie J. Huston, 56, Minot, died July 2, 2000 in a Minneapolis hospital. She is survived by her husband, Gordon; one son, Kevin, Crosby; her daughters, Kimberly Hogoboom, Minot, and Pamela Huston, Abbotsford, Wis.; four grandchildren; her brothers, Jim Blotter, Turtle Lake, David Blotter, Athens, Ala., and Steve Blotter, Mandan. Hattie Oster
GLADSTONE -- Hattie Oster, 81, Gladstone, died July 2, 2000, at her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Richardton. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Richardton. She is survived by her husband, Paul; five daughters, Patricia Mackey and Rosemary Weiler, both of Gladstone, Diana Entze, Dilworth, Minn., Geraldine Taylor and Joyce Volesky, both of Bismarck; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Laudie Kovash, Denver, Colo.; and one sister, Georgia Fritz, Worthington, Minn. Raymond J. Patton
Raymond J. Patton, 78, Bismarck, died July 2, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Church of Corpus Christi, with the Rev. Arnold Spain officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday both at Eastgate Funeral Service, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. A rosary and vigil service will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday evening. Ray was born on Nov. 3, 1921, the son of Patrick and Alice (Murphy) Patton. He grew up on a farm near Regan, graduating from Regan High School. Immediately following graduation, and at the age of 16, he joined the 164th Infantry, the first National Guard unit mobilized in World War II. After service in the Pacific and notably at Guadacanal, he returned to North Dakota and married Mavis Janette Strand in 1945. They were married 35 years and raised five children. After losing Janie to cancer, Ray married Evelyn Nelson Kolden in July of 1982. In 1946, he joined Midwest Motor Express, where he worked for some 43 years, working first as a rate clerk, later as a terminal manager, general operations manager, and finally as vice president for operations, director of safety, and a member of the Board of Directors. He was an active leader in a number of civic and industry associations, serving as president of the North Dakota Motor Carriers Association, from whom he received the Pioneer Carrier award in 1992, and remained an active member of the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce for some years. A family man who truly enjoyed times spent with his brothers, sisters, children and grandchildren, Ray also enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and other outdoor activities. He loved to travel, and was selected to represent the 164th Infantry in the 1992 dedication of a memorial on Guadacanal. Ray was known for the humor, quick wit, and funny stories which enlivened his public speaking and his personal conversations. Ray is survived by his wife, Evelyn, Bismarck; five children and sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, Mike and Bobbie Patton, Bismarck, Harlan and Chantal Patton, Travelers Rest, S.C., Mary Jane and Harvey Kadrmas, Bismarck, Colleen and Dave Pearce, Bismarck, and Kathy and Dale Fleck, Bismarck; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Creighton Kettleson, Bismarck, Rose Ellen and Tom McCourt, Benton Harbor, Mich., and Pat and Dick Orman, Red Lodge, Mont.; one brother, Larry Bouche, Apache Junction, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and by innumerable colleagues, neighbors and friends. Clarence E. Stevenson
MINOT -- Clarence E. "Stub" Stevenson, 81, Minot, died July 3, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, Minot, with burial in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot. He is survived by his wife, S. Louise Stevenson; three daughters, Andrea Messmore, Minot, Barbara Hett, Minot, and Lynda Sandvold, Plymouth, Minn.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and one brother, William Stevenson, Fontana, Calif. Helen Syvrud
Helen Lynch Syvrud, 85, Mandan, died July 1, 2000 in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Heart River Lutheran Church, on the campus of the Youth Correctional Center in Mandan, with the Rev. John Flaa officiating. Helen Muriel Herman was born on June 6, 1915 in Forman, the daughter of Henry and Nettie (Johnson) Herman. She attended school in Forman and graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. in 1936. She received her Masters Degree from the University of Minnesota. Helen taught music and language arts in Herreid and Aberdeen, S.D. prior to her marriage to George Lynch of Crosby. The day after their marriage, they moved to Seattle, Wash., where George was shipped to New Guinea for active duty during World War II. She taught music and writing for 30 years in Seattle. George died in 1984. Helen married Magne Syvrud in 1991 and they made their home on the farm west of Mandan. Helen loved her dogs, playing bridge and whist, entertaining dinner guests and fishing in Puget Sound, Canada and Alaska. She enjoyed quilting and embroidery. A quilt, which she and her mother designed in a rose pattern, won the top prize at state fairs in North Dakota, South Dakota and Washington. She also liked writing and telling stories, some of which she had published. Helen is survived and will be greatly missed by her husband, Magne Syvrud, Mandan; her son, George Lynch, Seattle; three stepdaughters and their husbands, JoAnn and John Flaa, Richwood, Minn., Sandy and Steve Mahoney, Forest Lake, Minn., and Linda and Chuck Suchy, Mandan; three stepsons, Monte Syvrud, Dillingham, Alaska, Donald Syvrud and his wife, Carol, Belgrade, Mont., and Daniel Syvrud, Mandan; 11 step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Lynch Sr.; an infant son; and a sister, Lucille. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Charlotte Tone
WILLISTON -- Charlotte Tone, 81, Williston, died July 4, 2000 in the Williston hospital. Arrangements are pending with Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Ruth Alden
NEW TOWN -- Ruth Alden, 85, New Town, died July 4, 2000, in a Stanley nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Baptist Church, New Town. Further arrangements are pending at Johnson Funeral Home, New Town.

Joseph Axtmann
RUGBY -- The Rev. Joseph Axtmann, 83, Rugby, died July 4, 2000, in the Rugby hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Little Flower Catholic Church, Rugby, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by one brother, Nick, Rugby; and three sisters, Magdalena Mack, Balta, Rose Volk, Petersburg, Alaska, and Gunda Busch, Bismarck. (Anderson Funeral Home, Rugby)

Catherine A. Brecht
HEBRON -- Catherine A. Brecht, 97, Salt Lake City, died Oct. 26, 1999. Graveside memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at St. John Cemetery, Hebron. Catherine was born Nov. 15, 1901, near Hebron. She was raised in the Hebron area, the third daughter of Franz and Marie Heinz Roehl Brecht. As a young girl she went to California to live with her half-sister and family, Emily Roehl. She passed the civil service exam and worked for Fitzsimmons Hospital. She was in Europe for the war years under the direction of the Central Intelligence Agency and surveyed damage done by bombing missions. She stayed in Europe and was an interpreter at the Nuremburg trials. Catherine returned to the States and made Salt Lake City her home. She was the oldest living relative at the 1989 Brecht reunion. She served in the U.S. Army Air Corp Staff Sergeant and was discharged March 11, 1947. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Christine C. Cook
Christine C. Cook, 78, Citronelle, Ala., died July 4, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Methodist Church, Union, Miss. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Christine is survived by three daughters, Susan Boyce, Bismarck, Nancy Van Ophem, Michigan, and Darlin Keck, Marion, Iowa. (Eastgate Funeral Service)

Magdalena Deitz, 91, Bismarck, died July 3, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.
