Leo J. Beauclair
Leo J. Beauclair, 65, Bismarck, passed away peacefully at home of natural causes on May 29, 2000. Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit with Fr. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial will be held at North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, rural Mandan. Visitation will be held form 6-7 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, with a rosary service at 7 p.m. Leo was born in New Rockford, on June 9, 1934 to Louis and Mary (Boyle) Beauclair. He attended St. James Academy in New Rockford and received his Ph.B. in 1956 and his JD in 1958 from the University of North Dakota Law School. He was admitted to practice in State and Federal District Court for North Dakota; U.S. Court of Appeals, Eighth Circuit Court and U.S. Supreme Court. Leo practiced law for 42 years. He practiced in Valley City for 13 years. He was the States Attorney and Judge of Increased Jurisdiction in Barnes County. While practicing in Valley City, Leo served in the 141 Engineer Battalion, North Dakota National Guard from 1953 to 1966, rising to the rank of Captain. Leo served as the General Counsel for the Bank of North Dakota and performed legal services on real estate and construction financing for numerous banks in North Dakota and served as title examiner for Farmers Home Administration on real estate and Bond Counsel on FmHA Community Development and Water projects. Leo was currently the managing partner in the law firm Beauclair and Cook, formerly Birdzell and Beauclair. His Bond Counsel experience included issues sold on a national, regional and local marketing involving U.S. office of Education, EPA, FmHA, and other Federal and State programs. In addition he did work for the state of North Dakota, various boards of City Commissions, City Councils and County Commissioners, Water Management District and Park Boards. Leo was former director of the National Association of Bond Lawyers and served on the North Dakota State Investment Board, North Dakota Independent College Foundation, St. Vincent's Nursing Home and Marillac Manor, Inc. He was former Chairman of the Board of Cardinal Muench Seminary. Leo had been serving on the boards of Fort Portal (Uganda) Project, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Trustees at the University of Mary, Heartview Foundation and Parish Counsel member of Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. He was honored to have formerly served as legal counsel for the Benedictine Sisters at the Richardton Monastery and the Sisters for the Presentation at Maryvale, Valley City. Leo married Mary Alice Lorenz at St. Catherine's Church in Valley City on Aug. 5, 1961. Leo was an avid runner and competed in 15 marathons across the United States and Canada. His other hobbies included racquetball, tennis, photography, travel and bird watching. Leo is survived by his wife, Mary Alice, Bismarck; his four children, Steve and Gisela, San Juan, Puerto Rico; Lee and Rosemary, Grand Forks, Michelle, Seattle, Wash., and Nicole, Fargo; and one new grandchild, Sophia Marie Beauclair, Grand Forks; three sisters, Lorraine Klockner, Dilworth, Minn., Meriat and Henry McCann, San Antonio, Texas, Jeannine and Robert Engberg, Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas; and one brother, Robert Beauclair, Poplar, Mont. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to either the God's Child Project in Guatemala or the Sr. Annetta Fort Portal Mission in Uganda. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Leonard A. Bender
Leonard A. Bender, 58, Mandan, died June 2, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Feeney officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Monday at Weigel Funeral Home, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m.. Leonard was born on May 6, 1942 in Mandan, the son of Adam and Ottilia (Berger) Bender. He was raised and educated in St. Anthony and Mandan. Leonard had been employed with Berg's Towing service and also had worked with Leingang Steel Siding. He was a member of the Mandan Eagles Club. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Lenice and Phil Jessen, Bismarck; one grandchild, Nicholas; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Jack and Eva, Minot, and Andy, Billings, Mont.; one sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine "Gerry" and Harry Kline, Mandan; and one sister-in-law, Ann Bender, Mandan. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Albert. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Pius Gisinger, 78, 1308 First St. NE, Mandan, died June 3, 20000 in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

ASHLEY -- James Huber, 64, Ashley, died June 1, 2000 in the Ashley hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Salem Reformed Church, Ashley, with burial in Ashley City Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Darlene; one son, Joseph, Arlington, Texas; one daughter, Michelle Gruggett, Escondido, Calif.; two brothers, Helmuth Huber, Fargo, and Eugene Huber, Moorhead, Minn.; and two granddaughters. Otto Kessler
BEULAH -- Otto Kessler, 88, Beulah, died June 2, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Monday, at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah, with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Beulah. He is survived by his wife, Alice; one son, Norman, Fessenden; one daughter, Ardella Miller, Hazen; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; six stepdaughters, Robert Stompro, Watford City, Vicki Oakum, Sumter, S.C., Beryl Dschaak, Craig, Colo., Beth Loken, Craig, Colo., Denise Mutzenberger, Hazen, and Tami Running, Regina, Sask., Canada; one stepson, Randy Running, Craig, Colo.; 14 step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. Frieda G. Larson
Frieda G. Larson, 84, Mandan, died June 2, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Paul D. Fiske officiating. Burial will be in Heart River Cemetery, southwest of Mandan. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday, and until the time of services Tuesday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. There will be no visitation at the church. Frieda was born on March 17, 1916 near Hebron, the daughter of Henry and Katie Elizabeth (Ruppert) Treiber. Raised and educated in the area, she graduated from Hebron High School and attended Capitol Commercial College, after which she was employed for several years at the J.C. Penney store in Mandan. She married Olaf Larson on Feb. 11, 1940 in Mandan. They farmed and ranched together in the Heart River area southwest of Mandan until Olaf died on Sept. 29, 1990. Frieda lived at Liberty Heights in Mandan until becoming a resident of Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck last year. She enjoyed crocheting, baking and a good game of whist. A 4-H leader, she was also the historian for many years for the Heart River Lutheran Church Women. A kind and gentle lady, Frieda enjoyed her active, outdoor life on the farm, but found her greatest pleasure in the company of her dear family and many friends. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Clark McMinn, Hamlet, Neb., and Carol and Loren Ford, Greeley, Colo.; two grandsons, Scott and Steve Ford; one sister and brother-in-law, Bernice and Gene Doll, Mandan; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray and Bernie Rolshoven, Mandan, and Bill and Shirley Rolshoven, Missoula, Mont. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Olaf; and two brothers, Walter Treiber and LeRoy Rolshoven. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Robert A. Mattern
WILLISTON -- Robert A. Mattern, 75, Williston, died June 3, 2000 in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church, Williston. Further arrangements are pending with Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston.

Robert L. McSpadden
Robert "Bob" L. McSpadden, 45, Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Bismarck, died May 25, 2000 at home after a courageous battle against cancer. Services were held on May 30 at Pine Ridge United Methodist Church, Kansas City, Mo., with burial in Mount Moriah Terrace Park Cemetery. Bob was born on June 26, 1954 in Michigan. He graduated from Ypsilanti High School in 1972. His career was in law enforcement and currently was employed by the U.S. Immigration Service as a detention supervisor for the Federal Government. Bob loved sports and continued his love through coaching Pop Warner football and Little League baseball. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid golfer. His greatest joy was his marriage to Lynn Uhlman on Aug. 6, 1983 and the blessing of having two wonderful children, Jesse and Chelsey. Other survivors include his mother, Betty McSpadden, his sister, Pam (Mike) Alton; several nieces and nephews and numerous in-laws. Preceding him in death was his father, Robert M. McSpadden. Milo Poole
WATFORD CITY -- Milo Poole, 72, formerly the Watford City area, died June 1, 2000 in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church, WIlliston, with burial in Good Hope Cemetery, near Charlson. He is survived by his sons, Terry and Roger, both of Gillette, Wyo., and Randy, Williston, their half-brother, Todd Gauthier; his daughters, Kathleen Vondall, Debra Azure and Bonnie Jo Gilbert, all of Williston; his brother, Donald Poole, Sr., Williston; his stepsister, Margaret Adolphi, Wenatchee, Wash.; 26 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Emma Sayler
Emma Sayler, 96, Eureka, S.D., and formerly of Ashley and Venturia, died June 2, 2000 in a Eureka care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Venturia Baptist Church. Further arrangements are pending with Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley.

Emmitt Steig
WILLISTON -- Emmitt Steig, 74, Williston, died June 2, 2000 in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Everson Funeral Home, Williston, with burial in Drake Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Eunice; his sons, Wade, Minneapolis, and Rodney, Williston; and two sisters, Louise Schmidt, Olympia, Wash., and Bernice Kalrud, Jamestown. Leona M. Vetter
MOTT -- Leona M. Vetter, 59, lifelong Mott resident died June 1, 2000 in a Mott care center after a lengthy bout with cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday, at Zoar Congregational Church, Mott, with the Revs. Corey Warner and Gary Wood officiating, and burial will be held at 3 p.m. CDT Monday at North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, rural Mandan. A memorial has been established. Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. MDT today at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Leona Monica Mosbrucker was born Sept. 3, 1940 in the St. Placidus community, north of Mott to Vince and Anna (Fixx) Mosbrucker. She was raised and educated in Mott and graduated from Mott Lincoln High School in 1958. On June 2, 1959 she and Ruben Schaible were married at Rapid City, S.D. They made their home in Mott, raised their family of two sons and three daughters. She worked at the Holiday House and later at the Commercial Bank of Mott. Ruben passed away on Sept. 5, 1982. Leona continued her career at the bank as teller and on Aug. 18, 1999 she received a Hall of Fame Award from the Independent Community Banks of ND for 25 years of service. On July 28, 1984, Leona and Clarence "Otto" Vetter were married and they enjoyed traveling and playing golf in surrounding states. Leona also loved being with people, waiting on her customers, doing craft work, and playing cards. She was a member of Zoar Congregational Church, the Mott Country Club, Homemakers and Bridge Club. Her brave battle with cancer since 1996 was an inspiration to her family and friends. Cherishing her memory are her husband and best friend, Clarence "Otto" Vetter, Mott; her sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Mary Schaible and Roland Schaible, all of Bismarck; her daughters and son-in-law, Valerie and Ardalan Hardi, Wheatridge, Colo., Rebecca and Jess Wentler, Fergus Falls, Minn., and Lee Ann and Rob Messer, Mott; nine grandchildren, Shawn, Shannon and Shelian Hardi, Zachery, Cole, Noah and Hanna Schaible, Audrie and Olivia Messer; her brothers, Leo (Verna) Mosbrucker, Elgin, Roger (Linda Mosbrucker), South Heart; her sisters, Sally (Lester) Waddell, Royalton, Minn., Delores (Francis) Miller, Sioux Falls, S.D., ; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Delbert and Rita Vetter, Florence Riedlinger, Art and Eleanor, Ben and Rosalie, Helen and Reinhold, Elsie and Emma Schaible, Hilda Huber and Lorraine Hellavang, as well as numerous aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. DICKINSON -- Frank F. Baar, 86, Dickinson, died June 2, 2000 in a Glendive, Mont. nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dickinson. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn; three daughters, Beverley Geier, Dickinson, Dorita Kuhn, Lefor, and Fennella Bergeson, Sioux Falls, S.D.; two sons, Curtis, Osceola, Mo., and Gery, Sioux Falls; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one sister, Rose Albertson, Dickinson; and four brothers, Emil, Helena, Mont., Joe, Gladstone, and Ed and Dick, both of Dickinson. Ella Baszler
HAZEN -- Ella (Baerwald) Baszler, 94, Hazen, died June 2, 2000 in the Underwood nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Tuesday, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hazen, with the Rev. David Suezle officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation hours will be held today from 5-8 p.m. MDT at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen. Ella was born Aug. 26, 1905 in Wolhynia, Russia, a daughter of Samuel and Amanda (Krueger) Baerwald. As a young girl, she emigrated to Canada, then to Egeland, and finally to the Manhaven area. On Oct. 18, 1925, she married John Baszler at Manhaven. They farmed and ranched together on the family farm and then moved to Hazen. John passed away on June 17, 1954. Ella was employed at the Hazen Memorial Hospital for 13 years. She was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hazen. In 1990, Ella moved to the Pioneer Park Retirement Home in Hazen and became a resident of the Prairie View Nursing Home at Underwood in 1993. She is survived by two sons, Vernon and Alice Baszler, Bismarck, and James and Julie Baszler, DeSmet, S.D.; two daughters, Elaine Richter, Hazen, and Betty and Bob Daly, Mesa, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ella was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; twin sons, Myron and Wayne; two sons-in-law, Willmar Richter and Wayne Ebel; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Fred Weigum, Lillian and Fred Galloway, Evelyn and Ernest Sailer; and her brothers, Ewald, Emil and Albert; and one grandson. Memorials may be directed by the Prairie View Nursing Home in Underwood. (Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)
