CARRINGTON -- Magnus Munson, 96, Carrington, formerly of Glenfield, died Oct. 10, 2000, in the Carrington nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington. Burial will be in James River Cemetery, rural Grace City. He is survived by many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews. (Evans Funeral Home, Carrington)

Christine L. Notah
Christine L. Notah, 71, Parker, Ariz., died Oct. 4, 2000, at Lake Havasu City, Ariz. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Veterans Memorial Building, Cannon Ball, with the Rev. Casmir Paluck officiating. Burial will be in Old Scout Cemetery. A vigil service begins at 7 p.m. Sunday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the Veterans Memorial Building. Christine was born icon July 24, 1929 in Cannon Ball, to Thomas and Lucy (Ireland) Comes Last. She was raised and educated in Cannon Ball. Christine worked as a nurse's aid at St. Alexius Hospital before moving to Parker, Ariz. She sold cosmetics and was an accomplished seamstress and quilt maker. She also was a jingle dress dancer and back-up singer for various musical groups. She married icon Casper Thunder Hawk in the early 1950s and Elliot Johns in 1965 who died in 1982. She married icon John Notah who survives in Parker. Also surviving is one daughter, Kathy Macardo, Parker; five grandchildren including Kimmy Jo Red Dog; special nieces, Paula Lee, St. Michaels, Ariz., Agnes Beston, Lucille Red Dog, Lorene Red Dog; nephew, Paul Bruno Red Dog; and several cousins including Victoria Joshua, Cannon Ball. Christine was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Lucy (Ireland) Comes Last; husband, Elliot; one son, Thomas Johns; one brother, Emil Comes Last; one sister, Mildred Uses Arrow; and an adopted brother, Robert Two Bears.

Joseph Sickler
DICKINSON -- Joseph Sickler Sr., 84, Dickinson, died Oct. 11, 2000, in a Dickinson care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dickinson. He is survived by two sons, Joe Jr., Bismarck, and Melvin, Rougemont, Quebec, Canada; one daughter, JoAnn Heiser, Dickinson; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Sister Georgella OSB and Sister Arletta OSB, both of Bismarck. Sharon Sorsdahl
Sharon Sorsdahl, 57, died Oct. 10, 2000. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending.

Beulah Van Vleck
Beulah Van Vleck, 97, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck, died Oct. 12, 2000, at the care center. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with the Rev. Walt Schott officiating. There will be no visitation. Beulah Van Vleck was born icon March 28, 1903 in Low Moor, Iowa, the daughter of George and Bertha (McCone) Van Epps. She was raised in Clinton, Iowa. She attended the Bush Conservatory of Music in Chicago and received a Julliard Scholarship for two years. She married icon Alfred W. Van Vleck. Beulah taught and owned a nursery school in Royal Oak, Mich., called Jack and Jill Nursery School for pre-school and kindergarten children for 33 years. Alfred died in 1958. Beulah continued living in Royal Oak until 1972 when she retired and moved back to Bismarck to live near her daughter, Belinda McCone. She is survived by her daughter, Belinda McCone, Bismarck; three grandsons, Bill and wife, Kerry McCone, Jamestown, Jim McCone, Mandan, and Pat McCone, Hensler; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Brooke McCone. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; and two brothers, James and Veddar Van Epps. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials.

William J. Weigel
William J. Weigel, 78, 1409 Third Ave. N.W., Mandan, died Oct. 10, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in St. Philomena Cemetery, Selfridge. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will be said at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary at 8. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. William J. Weigel, the son of Matthew Jr. and Veronica (Miller) Weigel, was born icon Oct. 28, 1921 in St. Anthony. He attended Selfridge High School, graduating in 1939. Bill continued his education with Lincoln Aeronautical School in Lincoln, Neb., graduating in 1941. On Nov. 16, 1943, he married icon Margaret Wuitschick in Selfridge. Bill took courses with Chicago Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Home School, completing the course in 1958. In 1959 he started his own refrigeration business. He built his own deep freezer, which was used many years. He served on the Selfridge School Board for 12 years and was a 4-H leader for 12 years. Bill helped build the Froelich Dam, and was instrumental in starting the Selfridge Cheese Plant, where he also served as secretary-treasurer. Bill was an active member in his church. He enjoyed square dancing and was an active fan of the Selfridge boys and girls basketball teams. Bill loved to go to the Golden Age Center for exercising, cards and playing bingo. He was a 10-year member. This resulted in Bill and Margaret being crowned king and queen for 1995-96. He would greet people at the center, clinics and hospital with a big smile and wave of the hand which was his way of communicating with people. He had a sense of strong conviction and respect for all people and would in a moment's notice be willing to help whenever needed. He would instill confidence in his children by allowing them to take apart machinery and put it back together, though with extra parts left over, seeing this as a learning experience and not a mistake. His wish for his children was to receive a good education as the foundation for their future. Bill is survived by his wife, Margaret; six sons and four daughters-in-law, David and Bernadette, Mandan, Sidney and Corla, Lincoln, Glenn and Bonnie, Bismarck, Mark and Deborah, Bismarck, Bruce, Littleton, Colo., and Brian, Mandan; four daughters and sons-in-law, Geneva and Harlen Pleinis, Mandan, Lucille and Craig Roy, Grantsdale, Mont., Brenda and Louis Loeb, Gresham, Ore., and Yvonn and Fernando Quijano, Dickinson; 22 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Adeline Marcheseni, Tacoma, Wash., and Marie Lloyd, Mesa, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Joyce; one grandson, Craig Weigel; one brother, Charles; and three sisters, Margaret Hanna, Elizabeth Engel and Rebecca Volk.

Edward Wolsky
KENSAL -- Edward Wolsky, 82, Kensal, died Oct. 12, 2000, in the Carrington nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Kensal. Further arrangements are pending with Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

Rudolph Zoller
LINTON -- Rudolph Zoller, 85, Linton, died Oct. 11, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Linton. Burial will be in Temvik Cemetery. Rudolph was born icon March 29, 1915, on a farm northwest of Linton, the son of Phillip and Margaretha (Kirschenmann) Zoller. He married icon Alvina Weber, July 6, 1937. They made their home on the Zoller family farm until they moved to Linton in 1953. He retired from farming in 1974. Rudolph was most known for his good nature and wonderful sense of humor. He loved to joke, have fun and make people laugh. Each morning he joined his coffee buddies, and many afternoons were spent shooting pool or playing cards at the Senior Center. He was an active member of the Linton Senior Citizens. His love of farming extended to his gardening and yard work in his retirement. He enjoyed camping, fishing, bowling, throwing darts and especially tinkering and making "stuff." He'd study something and say "I can make that" and he did. He made the good old days come alive as he related adventures. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alvina; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Ardyth and Jerald Van Heukelom, Wyoming, Mich., Ramona and Larry Humann and Cynthia and Steve Kurtz, all of Linton, and Sheryl Zaun and Wanda Glasser, both of Bismarck; and one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Val Zoller, Fargo; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Esther Perry, Bismarck; and twin brothers and one sister-in-law, Richard Zoller and Reinhold and Ann Zoller, all of Vancouver, Wash. Some of his most favorite times were enjoying German meals with his family. He was preceded in death by two infant sons; a son-in-law, Peter Glasser; six brothers, Adolph, Jake, Edwin, Ludwig, John and Emil; and three sisters, Alice Stoller, Lydia Bender and Christina Zoller. Casketbearers will be his grandsons, Kevin and Keith Van Heukelom, Ron Goettle, Rory and Keith Humann, Dustin Kurtz, Mark Roskamp, Jordan Glasser and Toby Lancaster. (Myers Funeral Home, Linton)

Edward Boehm
Marian Erickson
WILLISTON -- Marian Erickson, 88, Williston, died Mar. 2, 2001, in a Williston care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

She is survived by three sons, Myron, Bobby and Allen, all of Williston; two daughters, Marilyn Johnson, Williston, and Joyce Miles, Wyoming, Mich.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Katherine Kelsch
Katherine Dahl Kelsch, 84, Bismarck and Rancho Mirage, Calif., died Feb. 28, 2001, in Palm Desert, Calif. Services will be held at 10 a.m. PST today at St. Louis Church, Cathedral City, Calif. Another memorial service will be held in Bismarck at a later date.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, John, Rancho Mirage, Calif. and Bismarck; two sons and one daughter-in-law, John A. and Elizabeth, Grand Rapids, Minn., and James, LaQuinta, Calif.; two grandchildren, Jonas Thomas Kelsch and Celeste Katherine Kelsch, both of Grand Rapids, Minn.; one brother, Raymond Dahl, Crookston, Minn.; and her nieces and nephews.

Harley McDowell
Harley F. McDowell, 82, Bismarck, died Mar. 4, 2001, in a local hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Art Scanson and Rick Fossum officiating. Cremation has taken place. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where friends may sign the memorial book.

Harley was born icon Sept. 3, 1918, in New Rockford, the son of Fred and Cora (Zimmerman) McDowell. He was raised and educated in New Rockford. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. Harley married icon Margaret Hendrickson June 9, 1945, in Fargo. They moved to Bismarck in 1948, where they have since resided.

Harley was a dynamic young man and opened McDowell's Big Boy in 1953 and several years later also brought Kentucky Fried Chicken to Bismarck, Minot, Dickinson and Fargo.

In 1977 he was awarded Water Conservationist of the Year. He donated land from his farm for McDowell Dam, a wonderful recreation area for swimming, fishing and picnics. Harley and Margaret were benefactors for Medical Center Rehabilitation Hospital and Clinic at UND.

Harley was a member of McCabe United Methodist Church and Scottsdale United Methodist Church. He was active with the University of Mary, Bismarck Dakota Zoo Foundation and was an active supporter of the YMCA gym. The Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation was also a special recipient of Harley's and Margaret's concern, where Harley was a board member. Harley had a real affinity for the communities of Bismarck and Mandan and the state of North Dakota as well. He really enjoyed meeting and being with people.

He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Metta, New Rockford; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; his parents; one brother, Alfred; and one sister, Dorothy Georgeson.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the YMCA or Bismarck Dakota Zoo.

Alma Moos
GACKLE -- Alma Moos, 85, Gackle, died Mar. 5, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at First United Church of Christ, Gackle, with the Rev. Dave Winterfeldt officiating. Burial will be in the city cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Haut Funeral Home, Gackle, where a prayer service will be held at 5:30 p.m.

Alma Kinzler was born icon June 7, 1915, at the family farm southwest of Gackle, the daughter of John and Lydia (Kleingartner) Kinzler. She attended the local rural school where she received her elementary education and grew to womanhood in the vicinity.

Alma married icon Albert Moos Aug. 25, 1940, at his parents' farm southwest of Gackle. They made their home on a farm south of Gackle where they resided until 1971, when they moved into Gackle. Following the death of her husband Jan. 6, 1996, she continued to reside in Gackle. She entered Gackle Care Center in April 1996 and then entered Baptist Home in Bismarck Dec. 4, 2000.

Alma was a member of First United Church of Christ, Gackle, and Senior Citizens Group.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Edmund Henke, Gackle, and Margaret and Ed Stern, Bismarck; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Rueben Kinzler, Clinton, Iowa, and Ray Kinzler, Grand Forks; one sister, Violet Schardin, Jud; and one foster brother, Norman Kleingartner, Gackle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; her parents; two sisters; and three brothers.

Ida Olson
NEW SALEM -- Ida L. Olson, 101, New Salem, died Mar. 5, 2001, in a New Salem care center. Arrangements are pending with Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Viola Summers
DEVILS LAKE -- Viola Summers, 79, Devils Lake, died Mar. 3, 2001, in a Grand Forks hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethel Evangelical Free Church, Devils Lake, with the Rev. Bruce Dick officiating. Pallbearers will be Viola's grandchildren. Burial will be held in the spring in Viking Cemetery, Maddock.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and for one hour prior to services at the church.

Viola Avis Tweten was born icon May 29, 1921, seven miles north of Hamberg, Wells County, the daughter of Alfred and Gena Hagen Tweten. She attended school in Hamberg until her family moved to Devils Lake, where she finished her education. She worked at Montgomery Ward for several years. On June 22, 1941, Viola was united in marriage to Harley A. Summers at Devils Lake. They established their home in Maddock. Four children were born icon to this union, two sons, Carter and Larry, and two daughters, Karen and Debra.

In 1965, Viola was instrumental in helping her husband and two sons form Summers Manufacturing Company, a manufacturing company for farm machinery. For many years, Viola was responsible for all aspects of the accounting and secretarial work for the company.

Viola's interests included bowling, golfing, homemakers, flower arranging, traveling and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she adored.

Viola and Harley traveled each year to Bella Vista, Ark., to their winter home.

Viola will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, pleasant disposition and faith.

She was a member of Bethel Evangelical Free Church, Devils Lake.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Carter and Renee, and Larry and Linda, all of Maddock; two daughters and one son-in-law, Karen Aardahl, Devils Lake, and Debra and Leslie Anderson, Maddock; her grandchildren, Angela (Chris) Seelye, Rebecca Summers, Melanie (Edward) Jones, Nicole and Christopher Summers, Craig (Julie) Aardahl, Lisa (Kurt) Chaffee, Jessica Aardahl, and Andrea, Gretchen and Thomas Anderson; her great-grandchildren, Cody Seelye, Jenna Huffman, Karlee Chaffee, Caleb Aardahl, Kendra Jones, Naomi Chaffee and Erika Jones; one brother and sister-in-law, Chester and Darlene Tweten, Nevada, Mo.; and one sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Roger Hagen, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harley; and her parents.

Harold Barth

Harold V. Barth, 88, Mesa, Ariz., died March 4, 2001, at his home. Services were held today at Victory Lutheran Church, Mesa. Burial was in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Mesa.

Harold, the son of Jacob and Caroline (Wolf) Barth, was born icon April 13, 1912, in Mott. He was raised in Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1931. Harold went to work for Sweetheart Bakeries in 1933 and continued until his retirement in 1971. He married icon Audrey L. Conrad April 21, 1935, in Clarissa, Minn. They lived in Minot, Billings, Mont., and Bismarck. They raised five children and later retired to Mesa in 1976. They enjoyed their lake home near Pelican Rapids, Minn.

Harold was very active in church life at First Lutheran Church, Bismarck, and was active as a charter member of Victory Lutheran Church, Mesa. He was active in the Bismarck community as a fundraiser for the Boy Scouts and was on the boards at Dakota National Bank, Bismarck Hospital, Chamber of Commerce and their church.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey; two sons and daughters-in-law, Philip and Joni, Danville, Colo., and Bruce and Joanna, Scottsdale, Ariz.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Loralee and Larry Johnsgard, , San Diego, Calif., Sherry and David Rudrud, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Robin and Brian Erickson, East Grand Forks, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Viola Milano, Billings, Mont.; and one brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Mae, Great Falls, Mont.

The family prefers memorials to Victory Lutheran Church, 5946 E. University Drive, Mesa, Ariz. 85205, or to the Red Cross.
