Melvin Starr
TWIN BUTTES -- Melvin Starr, 66, Twin Buttes, died April 1, 2001, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. CDT Thursday at Twin Buttes Memorial Hall. Burial will be in Beaver Creek Cemetery, rural Twin Buttes.

He is survived by one son, Hank, Twin Buttes; two daughters, Bev Starr Lone Bear and Melissa Starr, both of Twin Buttes; 13 grandchildren; three brothers; and two sisters. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

Margaret Tuel
Margaret M. Tuel, 84, Bismarck, formerly of Jamestown, died April 2, 2001, at her home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. David Swonger officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, Bismarck.

Margaret M. Utecht was born icon Aug. 5, 1916, in Verona, the daughter of Eli and Henrietta (Pedersen) Utecht. She grew up and attended school in Verona, graduating from Verona High School in 1933. She moved to Chicago, Ill., and later to the Cass Lake-Bemidji, Minn., area.

Margaret married icon Melvin Dean Tuel March 17, 1940, in Moorhead, Minn. During World War II they moved to Oakland, Calif., and later to Washington. In 1944 they moved to Galchutt, later moving to the Fargo-Moorhead area. In 1955 they moved to Jamestown, moving to LaMoure in 1958. They returned to Jamestown in 1960, later moving to Billings, Mont., from 1962 to 1965, when they returned to Jamestown. In 1996 Margaret moved to Bismarck where her home had been since. Melvin passed away Jan. 4, 1997.

Margaret was an associate member of House of Prayer Lutheran Church in Bismarck and was a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Jamestown.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and Robert Nelson, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Lori Tuel, Woodbury, Minn.; and three grandchildren, Lanny Nelson, Alexander Tuel and Katharine Tuel.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one daughter, Nancy; three brothers, Raymond, Bob and Everett; and two sisters, Irene and Louise.

Rayland Bender
Rayland P. Bender, 58, Rapid City, S.D., died April 4, 2001, in a Rapid City hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Rooks and Kirk Funeral Home, Rapid City, with the Rev. Jon Mapa officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lawn Memorial Park, Rapid City.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and will continue for one hour prior to services.

He is survived by three sons, Trenton Bender, Minneapolis, Minn., and Dean and Rayland Bender, both of Rapid City; two daughters, Nanette Argon, Fowler, Colo., and Hope Witte, Hot Springs, S.D.; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Leroy and Elmer Bender, both of Washburn; and one sister, Carol Adams, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by one brother, James Bender.

Frankie Crow Flies High
NEW TOWN -- Frankie D. Crow Flies High, 53, New Town, died April 6, 2001, at her home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Fellowship Baptist Church, New Town. Further arrangements are pending with Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City.

Dr. Neil Cummings
VALLEY CITY -- Dr. Neil D. Cummings, 70, Valley City, went to be with the Lord April 4, 2001, in a Valley City hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Epworth United Methodist Church, Valley City, with the Rev. Steven Johnson officating. Burial will be held at a later date in Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church.

Neil Cummings was born icon Feb. 28, 1931, in Carrington, the son of Clarence and Sarah "Lucile" (Barber) Cummings. He received his first four years of elementary school education at LaMoure Public School, after which the family moved to Jamestown. He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1949, where he was class president and captain of the football team. He then attended Jamestown College, where he was a proud "Jimmie" and was co-captain of the football and track teams. Honors included "Outstanding Student of the Year" and "Distinguished Graduate Award." He received his Doctor of Optometry from Pacific University College of Optometry, Forest Grove, Ore., in 1960.

On Feb. 10, 1968, Neil was united in marriage with Stephanie Kay Lill in West Covina, Calif. They made their home in Valley City, where he established and ran a successful optometric practice for 38 years, retiring in 1998. He also opened a satellite clinic in Cooperstown. Neil currently worked as an optometric consultant for North Dakota Human Services. He loved his profession and his fellow colleagues. Neil took great pride that his daughter, Alicia, assisted him in his profession for a number of years.

Neil was a member of the N.D. Optometric Association, in which he served as president and also served as its legislative chair. He served on the N.D. State Board of Optometry for 10 years and also served as president. He served as adjunct professor for Pacific University College of Optometry, and he was able to assist 20 students in gaining acceptance into optometric school. He served on several professional associations and was N.D. Optometrist of the Year. He served 10 years on the Jamestown College Board of Trustees and was named trustee emeritus. Neil received the Valley City Jaycees Distinguished Service Award and was past Valley City Kiwanis president. He was an active member in Epworth United Methodist Church where he had served as administrative board president, on the pastor-parish relations committee, and was a Sunday school teacher. Neil was a member of Valley City Troubadours.

Neil's family appreciated his zest for life, love of learning and many talents. He enjoyed fishing, taking walks with his dog Brandy, hunting, reading and playing with his two granddaughters. He had the ability to converse about any topic with anyone at any time and thoroughly enjoyed meeting people. He had a deep abiding love for his Lord and Savior. The depth of his family's love will keep his memory alive until they embrace again in heaven.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Stephanie; one son, Scott (Sheila), Valley City; one daughter, Alicia, Fargo; two granddaughters, Gabrielle and Meredith; one brother, K.B. (Floyce), Valley City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Donn Wesley.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Epworth United Methodist Church, Epworth Christian Education or Barnes County Public Library.

Anthony Ehrmantrout
ELGIN -- Anthony Ehrmantrout, 74, Elgin, died April 5, 2001, at his home. Arrangements are pending with Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin.

Nelda Fried
Nelda P. Fried, 90, Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Jamestown, died April 6, 2001, in Sioux Falls. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Jamestown. Burial will be held May 14 in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.

She is survived by five children, Sonya Lebus, Fargo, Barbara Cumber, Sioux Falls, Richard Peterson, Boulder, Mont., Jeanne Pearson, Jamestown, and Judy Hatlie, Manhatten Beach, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Pauline Lorenzen, Merritt Island, Fla. Violet Fried
JAMESTOWN -- Violet L. Fried, 91, Jamestown, died April 4, 2001, in the Jamestown hospital. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Assembly of God Church, Jamestown. Burial will be held at a later date in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown.

She is survived by her husband, Samuel; five children, Florabelle Ellsbury, Henderson, Nev., Wallace Fried, Great Falls, Mont., James Fried, Bullhead City, Ariz., Samuel Fried, Charleston, S.C., and June Werre, Jamestown; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Edward Hager, Conyer, Ga. Margaret Garvin
Margaret Garvin, 91, formerly of Bismarck, died April 2, 2001, in Columbus, Ga. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas E. Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a rosary will be held at 7 p.m.

Margaret was born icon Feb. 2, 1910, in Bismarck, the daughter of Mathias and Phillomine Boespflug. She was raised in Bismarck and attended St. Mary's Grade School and and graduated from St. Mary's Central High School. She was employed by Provident Life Insurance Company.

Margaret married icon Edward Vincent Garvin in Minot. They made their home in Bismarck.

She is survived by two sons, Edward, Columbus, Ga., and John, Rapid City, S.D.; one daughter, Mary Wilson, Rialto, Calif.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Patricia Smith, Mountain View, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977; and her parents.

Alvin Heiden
LISBON -- Alvin Heiden, 71, Lisbon, formerly of Carrington, died April 5, 2001, in a Lisbon medical center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

He is survived by nine children, Steven, Granville, Ill., Neil, Spicer, Minn., Jeanette Wilson, Fort Morgan, Colo., Joel, Grand Forks, Mitch, Bismarck, Charles, Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Garth, Allison and Matthew, all of Fargo; 20 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Violet Gunst and Joyce Laush, both of Jamestown.

Lillian Helgeson
KENMARE -- Lillian Helgeson, 95, Kenmare, formerly of Maddock, died April 4, 2001, in the Kenmare hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Minnewaukan. Burial will be held at a later date in the church cemetery.

She is survived by one niece, Rachel Togstad-Axness, Des Lacs. (Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock)

Mildred Iverson
Mildred S. Iverson, 84, Bismarck, died April 5, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital after a long period of deteriorating health. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Everson Funeral Home, Williston. Following visitation, burial will be held in Epping Cemetery, Epping.

Mildred was born icon Feb. 7, 1917, on a farm outside of Epping, to Knute and Amelia (Vinje) Iverson. Mildred graduated as valedictorian from Epping High School before attending Interstate Business College in Fargo.

Mildred worked for a year with the Williston Herald and served for eight years as a secretary in the office of the County Superintendent of Schools, Williams County, before moving to a two-year assignment with the State Department of Public Instruction in Bismarck. Thereafter she worked for a number of years as a receptionist and secretary for the Gold Seal Company and Wylie Music Company.

Mildred retired after 23 years of additional service with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Veterinary Services in Bismarck.

Mildred was a prominent member of AA, was personally acquainted with the founders and spoke frequently at its international conferences.

She is survived by one brother, Emmett, Glen Eden Beach, Ore.; one niece; and several nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Lloyd, Kenneth and Lawrence. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Robert Keller
HARVEY -- Robert A. Keller, 69, Harvey, died April 5, 2001, in a Harvey medical center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Harvey. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Bob was born icon May 18, 1931, in Wellsburg. He was the son of Sebastian and Catherine (Wack) Keller. As a young child he grew up and attended school in Wellsburg. Bob graduated from Harvey High School in 1949. He then attended NDSSS in Wahpeton from 1949 to 1950.

Bob served in the Army from January 1951 to December 1952. Following his discharge from the Army, Bob returned to Harvey and worked at Keller Implement from 1952 to 1963, and then became part-owner. In September 1966 a new corporation was formed, B.J. Ford, Inc. In 1990 the Chrysler line was added and the business is currently operating as BJ Auto Sales. Bob married icon Irene (Mickey) Korte April 13, 1955, in Minot.

Bob was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters, all of Harvey, Wells Eagles Aerie No. 3080, American Legion of Harvey where he was post commander and Harvey Country Club where he served as past president. Bob served on the Harvey City Council for two terms and on the St. Aloisius Hospital Board of Directors for two terms.

Bob enjoyed hunting, especially goose hunting, and golfing.

He is survived by his wife, Irene (Mickey) Keller; two daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Bill Marion, Bismarck, and Jean and Bob Roxine, Minot; four sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Marianne and Bob Jr. and Julie, all of Harvey, Dave and Sheila, Chanhassen, Minn., and Mark and Kathy, Eagan, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; and six brothers and seven sisters-in-law, Steve and Wilda, Ed and Rose, John and Ramona, Don and Judy and Leo and Verna, all of Harvey, Jerry and Judy, Dickinson, and Jan Keller, Sun Prairie, Wisc.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary; one grandson, Jacob; his parents; one brother, Jim; and one sister, Mary.

The family prefers memorials to St. Aloisius Hospice, Harvey.
