Raymond Wetzel
Raymond Wetzel, 69, Aberdeen, S.D., died April 25, 2001, at his home. Services were held April 30. He is survived by three daughters, Johanna Peters, Pasco, S.D., Cindy Floyd, League City, Texas, and Sue Wetzel, Salt Lake City, Utah; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Edwin, Yakima, Wash., Leo, Las Vegas, Nev., and Samuel, Sheridan, Ore.; and five sisters, Sophia Preszler, Bismarck, Elizabeth Peterson, Hoquiam, S.D., Katherine Pearson, Montesano, S.D.; Ruth Hunter, Sitka, Ala., and Martha Schneider, Yakima, Wash.

Herman Ciavarella
Herman "Sonny" Ciavarella, 83, Mandan, died May 11, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Stephen Eastin officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a service of remembrance will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. There will be no visitation at the church. Herman was born Jan. 29, 1918, in Mandan, the son of Louis and Rose (Schwindling) Ciavarella. A graduate of Mandan High School, he received an accounting degree from Bismarck Business College. He married Adelaide Schauss in Wibaux, Mont., Dec. 3, 1941. In 1957, he began working in the dairy industry as office manager for Foremost Dairy in Mandan. When Foremost was purchased by Cass-Clay in 1969, he was promoted to the position he held for almost 30 years, that of Western Division Manager. An outgoing and unpredictable fun-lover, Herman found his greatest joy in bringing happines to other people. Whether through his humourous antics or sharing his love of music by playing his cordivox, solo or in the band, "Seranadors," Herman almost always left people feeling better for his having been there. He loved to garden, flowers as well as vegetables. He gave away much of the harvest from his four-acre garden north of the city. Herman was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Mandan, where he held various offices and was a lifetime elder. He was also a life member of the American Federation of Musicians and served on the North Dakota Dairy Association board. A member of the Lions and Eagles Clubs, he was able to volunteer more frequently in the years following his retirement. He played his music for the residents of nursing homes and also played Santa or clown for various civic events. He is survived by his wife, Adelaide; his sons and daughters-in-law, Norman and Beverly, Mandan, and Leslie and Kay, Bismarck; his daughters and sons-in-law, Mava and Donald Perry, Rochester, Minn., Faye and Gary Hanson, Mandan, and Corliss and Myron Gorden, Dickinson; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Tony and Agnes, Bismarck, Leonard and Rosemary and Kenneth, all of Mandan; and four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Katherine Bernhardt, Cecilia and Herman Doseh and Dorothy and Ralph Weber, all of Bismarck, and Donna and Jim Mayor, Mandan. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Ciavarella; his parents; and his brother, Michael.

Alice Hollan
FREDONIA -- Alice Hollan, 83, Fredonia, died May 12, 2001, in the Ashley hospital. Arrangements are pending with Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Kulm.

Eugene Horner
NAPOLEON -- Eugene Horner, 75, Napoleon, died May 11, 2001, in the Wishek care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Phillip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon. Further arrangements are pending with Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon.

Elizabeth Knopik
DICKINSON -- Elizabeth Knopik, 85, Dickinson, formerly of Belfield, died May 11, 2001, in a Dickinson care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MDT Wednesday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Belfield. Further arrangements are pending with Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Esther Lawson
Esther A. Lawson, 76, Beverly, Ky., died May 11, 2001, in a Kentucky hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Beverly United Methodist Church, Beverly, Ky. Burial will be in Green Hills Memorial Gardens, Middlesboro, Ky. She is survived by her husband, Sam; two sisters, Ruth Elmer and Wilma Elmer Cook; and one brother, Harold Elmer. Elsie Reister
Elsie P. Reister, 89, Great Falls, Mont., formerly of Medina, died May 10, 2001, in a Great Falls care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zion United Church of Christ, Medina. Burial will be in the city cemetery. She is survived by one daughter Ardis Hughes, Great Falls, Mont.; one son, LeRoy Reister, Silver Star, Mont.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and one stepsister, Sophie Grenz, Washburn. Harold Sailer
Harold L. Sailer, 76, Mandan, died May 9, 2001, in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Charles Axness officiating. Burial will be held at 3 p.m. CDT in St. Paul's Cemetery, Dodge. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, where a service of remembrance will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. Harold was born June 27, 1924, in rural Dodge, the son of Jacob and Lydia (Stuhlmiller) Sailer. He was raised and attended school in Dodge. On Dec. 19, 1948, Harold married Ida Tschaekofske in Dodge. They farmed at Dodge for two years, then moved to Pick City, where he worked on the Garrison Dam construction. They moved to Bismarck, in 1954 and to Mandan in 1971. He worked at Jolly George Bar, Sweet Shoppe and then FMR Electric. He retired in 1995. Harold enjoyed his friends at Liberty Heights, fishing, accordion music, polkas and waltzes. He is survived by four daughters and their spouses, Marlene and Earl Larson, Bismarck, Marion and David Vikan, Richardton, Marvel Bertsch, Calahan, Colo., and Marsha May and Greg Duvall, St. Louis, Mo.; four grandchildren, Jeremy Bertsch, Jonathan and Philip Vikan and Courtney Duvall; and one sister, Eleanor and Art Miller, Sheridan, Wyo. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida; his parents; two brothers; and two sisters.

Thelma Skorick
MINOT -- Thelma Skorick, 85, Minot, formerly of Butte, died May 11, 2001, in a Minot hospital. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Butte Cemetery, Butte. She is survived by her husband, John Jr.; one daughter, Marlys Perkins, Ruso; two sons, Michael and Richard, both of Butte; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Dennis Smith
JAMESTOWN -- Dennis O. Smith, 65, Jamestown, died May 12, 2001, in the Jamestown hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Basilica of St. James, Jamestown. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown. He is survived by one brother, David, Hudson, Wis.; and two sisters, Sister Susan Smith, El Paso, Texas, and Bridget Kohl, St. Paul, Minn. Deofil Wagner
Deofil "Dif" Wagner, 93, Bismarck, died May 11, 2001, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Joel Sherer officiating. Burial will be in Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Max. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. Deofil was born on a farm south of Max on Nov. 3, 1907, the son of John and Christine (Finkbeiner) Wagner. He attended school for eight years in rural Max. On Jan. 12, 1933, he married Clara Jungling at Peace Lutheran Parsonage in Max. They had been married for 68 years. He is survived by his wife, Clara; three sons and daughters-in-law, Curtis and Muriel, Bismarck, Dennes and Beverly, Millington, Tenn., and Garry and Linda, Mandan; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Katie Jungling, Bismarck, Emma Schnaible, Minot, and Mary Wagner, Tacoma, Wash. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jake, Rudolph and Ed; and one daughter-in-law, Wilma.

Alma Walter
HEBRON -- Alma Walter, Hebron, died May 11, 2001, at her daughter's home in Council Bluff. Arrangements are pending with Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron.

Nicholas Zinsli
BEACH -- Nicholas A. Zinsli, 67, Beach, died May 11, 2001, in Beach. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Beach. Burial will be in the city cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; one daughter, Sandra Zinsli, Beach; two brothers, Richard, Kent, Wash., and Louis, Alexandria, Minn.; and four sisters, Mary Cook, Sentinel Butte, Josephine Rising, South Haven, Minn., Rose Schreiber, Glendive, Mont., and Irene Bakken, Wibaux, Mont. Margaret Allioli
Margaret B. Allioli, 80, Mandan, died May 12, 2001, at her home in the presence of her family and her hospice nurse, Judy. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at American Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Norm Beighley officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue Tuesday at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until time of services. There will be no visitation at the church. Margaret was born Sept. 17, 1920, in Mandan, the third born daughter of James Patrick and Mildred C. (Coyne) Buckley. She was educated in Mandan, graduating from Mandan High School in 1939. As a teenager she played all school sports that were available for girls at the time. She excelled in music, playing second trumpet in the band and singing in the Glee Club. She also played on a city women's softball team that earned a place in the national tournament in Chicago. Due to hard times, a sponsor could not be found for them. After graduation, Margaret was employed with the National Youth Administration and the Selective Service and also helped to build ships on the West Coast during World War II. It was at this time that she met her future husband. She married Frank H. Allioli at Yakima, Wash., in 1943. They then moved to Napa, Calif. God blessed Margaret with a beautiful voice and two daughters who also use their voices. Some of her happiest moments were of car trips or family gatherings that often resulted in the singing of hymns in three-part harmony. After her divorce, Margaret returned to Mandan where she worked in the Morton County Treasurer's office for 18 and a half years, starting as a bookkeeper and as Deputy Treasurer under Jake Geiss. Margaret was a very active member of First Church of God in Napa and later of First United Methodist Church in Mandan. She was the superintendent of Sunday school, sang in the choir and held various leadership positions in both churches. She enjoyed bowling and made many lifelong friends while participating in that sport. She was also an avid bridge player. She served as Worthy Advisor for the Rainbow and was appointed to the Grand Cross of Color. In 1975, Margaret and Frank were remarried and she moved back to Napa until 2000, when she returned to Mandan. She will be missed by all and remembered for her sense of humor, practical jokes and dressing up on St. Patrick's Day. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Clara Marie and Cliff Stack, Mandan, and Bonnie Jean and Rick Schulz, Glendale, Ariz.; her grandchildren, Michael Joseph Parcher, Jacksonville, Fla., and Kathleen Marie Priebe, South Bend, Ind.; two great-grandchildren; her sisters, Mary Thomas, Happy Camp, Calif., and June Streibel and her husband S. Bryce, Fessenden; and her special friends, Ida Halweg, Bismarck, Olga Vogelpohl and Esther Padilla, both of Mandan, and Marge Hendricks, Napa, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank H. Allioli; her parents; and her sister, Audrey L. Peterson. The family requests memorials to the American Lutheran Church Building Fund or Medcenter One Hospice.

William Anderson
VELVA -- William H. Anderson, 72, 1612 34th St. N., Velva, died May 11, 2001, in a Minot medical center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva. Burial will be in the city cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva. William was born July 7, 1928, in Velva, the son of Daniel and Edna (Roulier) Anderson. He was raised and educated in Velva, and graduated from Velva High School in 1948. After his graduation, he worked in the Velva area in farming and road construction. He entered the United States Army, and served from 1951 through 1953. After his honorable discharge from the service, he returned to Velva. He went to work for Central Power in Velva. He worked at the William Neal Power Station, east of Velva. William married Lou Hochsprung Sept. 2, 1954, in Ruso. They lived and raised their family south of Velva. While working at Central Power, William also maintained his farming interests. He retired from Basin Electric in 1975, after 22 years of service. He continued farming for the remainder of his life. William was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church and the American Legion Joseph I Weller Post No. 39, both of Velva. He was an active member of the National Rifle Association and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union. He was a former member of the Bjornson Township Board. He is survived by his wife, Lou; two sons, Armann and Joyce, Velva, and Arvid and Stara, Pick City; one daughter, Anita Schmidt and Willie, Velva; 16 grandchildren, Kristofer, Justin, Austin, Amanda and David Schmidt, Jocelyn, Perry, Lyle, Micheala and Grant Anderson, Steven, Nicholas, Colena and Erik DeGeorge and Jonathan and Alysa Anderson; one great-grandchild, Parker Schmidt; one brother, Stanton Anderson, Velva; two aunts, Teve Breiland, Bottineau, and Doris McCulloch, Apache Junction, Ariz.; two cousins, Durelle Hanson, Lakeland, Fla., and Aletha Putney, Sweethome, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Margie Pretzer.

Loretta Burkart, 64, Bismarck, died May 10, 2001, at her home. No funeral services will be held. A gathering of friends and family will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the home of Kelly Burkart. She is survived by one daughter, Debbie Bauer, Mediapolis, Iowa; one son, Gust Burkart, New London, Iowa; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Rose Kohler, Bismarck; and four brothers, George Schnellbach, Mandan, Walter Schnellbach, Bismarck, Albert Schnellbach, Fargo, and John Schnellbach, Grafton.
