Edward Becknell Sr.
Edward J. Becknell Sr., 84, Bismarck, died June 9, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Edward "Ed" Becknell was born Nov. 12, 1916, in Medina. He married Caroline Keller on Feb. 5, 1938, in Bismarck. He worked at various jobs. He worked on the track gang for the railroad, at the Mandan Oil Refinery, Skeels Electric, MDU as a pipe fitter, Watcher's Ranch and as a janitor at a mechanic garage. He also worked for William Clairmont's Construction for 10 years. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marcel (Carol) Thiel, Havre, Mont., and Mrs. Alice Mae Hohbein and Miss Edvina Becknell, both of Bismarck; two sons, Edward (Eddie) Becknell Jr., Bismarck, and Jim Becknell, Las Vegas, Nev.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline; and several brothers and sisters.

Hazel Bergsgaard
WEST FARGO -- Hazel G. Bergsgaard, 81, West Fargo, formerly of Maddock, died June 8, 2001, at her home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at North Viking Lutheran Church, Maddock. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She is survived by one daughter, Rachel Rudel, West Fargo; two sons, Lannis, Crookston, Minn., and Donald, Cavalier; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Mabel Miller, Devils Lake. William Flegel
LINTON -- William E. Flegel, 84, Linton, died June 9, 2001, in the Strasburg care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, Linton. Further arrangements are pending with Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

William Guthmiller
PINGREE -- William Guthmiller, 74, Pingree, died June 10, 2001, at his home. Arrangements are pending with Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.

Russel Huenink
MOTT -- Russel H. Huenink, 82, Mott, died June 8, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. MDT Tuesday at Hettinger Lutheran Church, Hettinger. He is survived by his wife, Lillie; two sons, Todd, Mott, and Robin, Plains, Mont.; three daughters, Laurie Hoffer, Williston, Ila Perhus, Marshall, and Toni Hinsz, Bismarck; 12 grandchildren; and three sisters, Elna Hallen and Della Hallen, both of Laurel, Mont., and Carole Rudesill, Baldwin, Wis. Wallace Jacobs
BOWMAN -- Wallace Jacobs, 76, Bowman, died June 10, 2001, in the Bowman hospital. Arrangements are pending with Krebsbach Funeral Service, Bowman.

Elmer Jurgens
BELFIELD -- Elmer Jurgens, 88, Belfield, died June 8, 2001, in a Dickinson care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Belfield. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Martha; four children, Jim Jurgens, Marysville, Wash., David Jurgens, Belfield, Karen Boshart, Charleston, Ill., and Ken Jurgens, Dickinson; 13 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two great-grandsons; one step-great-grandson; one brother, George, Angel's Camp, Calif.; and one sister, Rose O'Brien, Belfield. Evelyn Peterson
NEW SALEM -- Evelyn Peterson, 93, New Salem, died June 10, 2001, in the New Salem care center. Arrangements are pending with Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Lena Selensky
HARVEY -- Lena Selensky, 82, Harvey, died June 8, 2001, in a Harvey medical center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Selz. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She is survived by one daughter, Lucille Burgard, Minot; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; five brothers, Bill Keller, Selz, Casper and Victor Keller, both of Bismarck, Ray Keller, Great Falls, Mont., and Joe Keller, Minot; and two sisters, Mary Grossman, Harvey, and Barbara Schneider, Selz. Orville Strand
Orville Strand, 80, Bismarck, died June 10, 2001, at his home. Arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Velmar Battes
WILLISTON -- Velmar L. Battes, 78, Williston, died June 9, 2001, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Everson Funeral Home, Williston. Further arrangements are pending.

William Flegel
LINTON -- William Edward Flegel, 84, Linton, died June 9, 2001, in the Strasburg care center. MANDAREE -- Thomas B. Fox, 72, Mandaree, died June 9, 2001, in the Watford City hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mandaree High School. Further arrangements are pending at Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City.

William Guthmiller
PINGREE -- William Guthmiller, 74, Pingree, died June 10, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with burial in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown. He is survived by his wife, Thelma; one son, Leland, Kimball, Neb.; three daughters, Rhonda Ferguson, Jamestown, Lorelie Momerak, Grafton, and Monica Diede, Pingree; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Adam and Ludwig, both of Pettibone; and three sisters, Caroline Schagunn, New Rockford, Martha Koenig, Sultan, Wash., and Bertha Schick, Jamestown. Wallace Jacobs
BOWMAN -- Wallace Jacobs, 76, Bowman, died June 10, 2001, in the Bowman hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at St. Charles Catholic Church, Bowman, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Dybe; two daughters, Rita Lambourn, Rhame, and Brenda Lindemann, Minneapolis; four sons, Morris, St. Paul, Neb., Loren, Minnetonka, Minn., and Clinton and Lester, both of Bowman; and 10 grandchildren. Karen Materi
Karen Ann Materi, 64, 420 E. Main St., died June 11, 2001, in the Underwood nursing home. She suffered from chronic lung disease for many years and has bequeathed her body to medical science. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Karen Rene was born Sept. 23, 1936, in Halloch, Minn., to Felix and Rita (Fitzpatrick) Rene. She lived in Pembina until 1944, when she moved with her parents to Bismarck. She attended school in Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1954. She worked for the state treasurer and secretary of state from 1954-1958, and for Deister, Ward and Witcher until her marriage to Al Materi, Aug. 12, 1961. She is survived by her husband, Al; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Peggy, Breckenridge, Minn.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Rene and Eric Marburger, Buffalo, N.Y., and Tisa Materi, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Carena, Cuyler and Casey Materi, Anna and William Marburger, and Trey Materi; and many special friends. Karen was preceded in death by her parents. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials.

Evelyn Peterson
Evelyn "Toots" Bateman Peterson, 92, Billings, Mont., died June 10, 2001, in the New Salem care center. A memorial service will be held in Billings at a later date, and a family service will be held in Sims in early August. There will be a gathering of friends and family for viewing and visitation from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Evelyn was born July 3, 1908, in rural Almont, to James and Dena (Ramsland) Bateman. Her school years were spent largely in Minnesota with many summers spent in North Dakota at her grandparents' farm in Almont. In 1922, her family moved to Almont where her parents ran the hotel and a gas station. She finished high school in 1926, graduating salutatorian. She then went to Dickinson Normal School, acquiring a teaching certificate and taught rural schools for four years. Evelyn married Ralph Peterson of Almont on March 23, 1929, and they lived in New Salem for six years during which time daughter Janet was born. They moved to Billings, where Ralph was in business and she worked in a gift shop until opening her own ceramic studio. Evelyn was a beloved friend to many, being of a caring and thoughtful nature. She loved to sing, travel and read. She took her church involvement at American Lutheran to heart and was an active teacher, circle member, and supporter of the bell choir that she donated in memory of her husband, Ralph. Her plans were to move to North Dakota to be closer to her family and her roots, but ill health interceded and she entered Elm Crest Manor, New Salem. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Chuck Esser, Mandan; two grandchildren, Julie Sandoval-Ogles and her husband, Gary, Vancouver, Wash., and Major Zachary and his wife, Janet West, Grafenwohr, Germany; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Sig and Margie Peterson, Almont; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph, who died in 1978; five brothers and sisters and their spouses. She was the oldest of her siblings.

Shawnee Pitman
WILLISTON -- Shawnee Glynn Pitman, the newborn daughter of Derrick and Jennifer (Rademacher) Pitman, Williston, died June 9, 2001, in the Williston hospital. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Garden of the Angels in Riverview Cemetery, Williston. She is survived by her parents; her brother, Drake; her sister, Shalie; her grandparents, Robert and Carol Rademacher, Williston, and Mary Pitman and Dennis Pitman, both of Williston; and her great-grandparents, Clarence Rademacher, Underwood, Foy and Wanda Pitman, Williston, and Mary O'Neill, Williston. Lauren Stein
Lauren Stein, 3, daughter of Gregg and Cathie Stein, Collegeville, Pa., formerly of Bismarck, died unexpectedly June 10, 2001, in Collegeville. Arrangements are pending at Bismarck Funeral Home.
