Henry Hottmann
Henry Hottmann, 94, Rapid City, S.D., died April 17, 2000, in a Rapid City nursing home. Henry Hottmann was born to Jonathan and Fredericka (Gutjahr) Hottmann on Dec. 31, 1905, at the family farm home southwest of Tolstoy, S.D. His childhood home was near the original homestead sod shanty. The thick walls were made of rocks and mud, plastered inside and out with clay and straw. He was reared in a home where every child, especially a boy, was an economic asset for it meant one less hired hand. His early years of schools were often limited to three or four months per year. Despite this humble beginning, Henry had three distinguished careers in his lifetime --teacher, minister and personal finance counselor. He was graduated from Gettysburg High School. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Huron University, his master of arts degree from the University of Southern California, and a doctorate from the University of Colorado. he was the recipient of an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Dakota Wesleyan University. In 1930, he married Luella Jane Liddle of Park River, S.D. She was deceased in 1983. Together they raised two sons, Paul and Mark. He taught in Tolstoy, Gettysburg and Huron Public Schools, Huron University and the University of Colorado. He then entered the ministry and served churches at Elkton, Aurora, Madison, and Deadwood, S.D., and Bismarck. He also served two terms as district superintendent for the Northern and Southern Districts of the United Methodist Church. As a personal financial counselor, he was the director of the Black Hills Credit Counseling Service for nine years after retiring from the ministry. During his ministry, Dr. Hottmann participated in a churchman's travel seminar to the Bible Lands and Europe. He also attended the tenth, eleventh and thirteenth World Methodist conferences in Oslo, London and Dublin, respectively. After retirement from the ministry in 1974, he supplied various churches and remained active in the Conference Commission on Archives and History. He presented several papers to the CCAH including "History of the Black Hills Mission" in 1977 and "The Hutterites in South Dakota" in 1990. The latter has been published in book form. He was an active member of the Lion's Club for over half a century. In 1984, Henry married Ruth Gehring Wilinson of Howard, S.D. Dr. Hottmann was preceded in death by his first wife, Luella; his son, Paul; his parents; his four sisters, Christina Trefz, Rosina Buechler, Marie Hosterman and Freda Brekke; and his four brothers, David, Jonathon, John C. and Christian. He is survived by his second wife, Ruth; his son, Mark, Homer, Alaska; two granddaughters; one grandson; two great-grandsons; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. The spirit of the Risen Christ called Henry to new heights and horizons. He accepted the challenge. Leo Tolstoy, the Russian philosopher, once wrote, "And suddenly I heard the words of Christ and understood them, and life and death ceased to seem to me evil, and instead of despair, I experienced happiness and the joy of life undisturbed by death." What great news! Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. today at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, Rapid City. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev.
