GARRISON -- Martha Steinwand, 78, Garrison, died April 21, 2000 in the Garrison hospital. Arrangements are pending with Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

Leonard C. Thomas
BEULAH -- Leonard C. Thomas, 63, Beulah, passed away unexpectedly at his home of natural causes on April 20, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday, at the Chapel of Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah, with Father Charles Zins as officiant for the service. Burial will be held at a later date. A rosary will be said at 9:30 a.m. MDT Monday, at the Chapel of Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah. Leonard was born on Feb. 25, 1937 in Mandan, the son of Jacob and Mary (Koch) Thomas. He grew up and attended school in the Solen area. After his education, he stayed on the farm until enlisting in the Army. Following his discharge from the Army, Leonard returned to Bismarck and began working as a carpenter. He then moved to Beulah, where he has lived for the last 36 years. Leonard was well-known for his art and woodcarvings. Mr. Thomas carved the State Seal of North Dakota and presented the art of Governor Schafer. The Seal remains in the Governor's office still today. He was a skilled carpenter, architect, and craftsman. Everything Leonard built was to perfection, and no two constructions were the same, each of them was unique. He is survived by two daughters, Melissa Thomas, and Tracy Thomas, both of Bismarck; three sons, Jeffrey Thomas and his fiancee, Lisa Prince, Little Rock, Ark., Jayme Thomas and his wife Heidi, Kelso, Wash., and Jeremy Thomas and his special friend, Tristin, Bismarck; two grandchildren, Damian and Delaney Thomas, Kelso, Wash.; three sisters, Hildegard Moos, Beulah, Irene Miller and her husband, Jim, Bismarck, Frances Silbernagel and her husband, Joe, Glen Ullin; two brothers, Bernard Thomas, Bismarck, and Paul Thomas, and his wife, Leona, Cannon Ball; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his good friends, Joyce and Del Els, and the Russell Thompson family. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; one niece and one grand niece; and one nephew. Lorraine Sylvia Wagendorf
WILLISTON -- Lorraine Sylvia Wagendorf, 61, Williston, died April 19, 2000 in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Williston, with burial in Riverview Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Daniel; her son, Troy, Minot; her daughter, Melissa Pitman, Williston; one brother, Lielan Grote, Battleview, and one sister, Arlene Grubb, McGregor. Steve Zarr
DODGE -- Steve Zarr, 84, rural Dodge, died April 19, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Monday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Richardton, with Fr. Brian Wangler, OSB officiating. Burial will take place at St. Martin's Cemetery, south of Dodge. A vigil service will begin on Sunday at 6 p.m. MDT at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah. Visitation will continue for one hour before the time of the service at the church. Steve was born Nov. 24, 1915 south of Dodge, a son of Joseph and Barbara (Lauinger) Zarr. He was raised and educated south of Dodge and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Dunseith for a time. On Nov. 6, 1939, he married Gertrude Duttenhefer at St. Martin's Catholic Church, south of Dodge. They farmed south of Dodge their entire married lives. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gertrude; two daughters and sons-in-law, Delores and Bob Sergott, Beulah, Evangeline and Norman Schlender, Golden Valley; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry, Dodge, Dale and Loraine, Minot, and Duane and Peggy, Bismarck; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two brothers, August Zarr, Anaconda, Mont., and John Zarr, Dodge; one sister, Catherine Klein, Bismarck. Steve was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Christine; and two brothers and two sisters. (Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah)

DEVILS LAKE -- Casper Anderson, 99, Devils Lake and formerly of Leeds, died April 22, 2000 in a Devils Lake care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Leeds Lutheran Church. Further arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds.

GARRISON -- Kevin Bauer, 19, Garrison, died April 22, 2000 of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Arrangements are pending with Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

Arthur Benson
Arthur Benson, 86, Maddock, died April 20, 2000 in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at North Viking Lutheran Church, Maddock, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Stella; three sons, Curtis, Fargo, Rick, Maddock, and Ryan, Fairfax, Iowa; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Mendie Benson, Maddock; and three sisters, Effie Swanson, Maddock, Ruth Nesset, Prescott, Ariz., and Dagnie Knowlton, Mankato, Minn. JoAnn Haugen
JoAnn Gray Haugen, 66, New Braunfels, Texas, and formerly of Wilton, died April 21, 2000 at her home. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, New Braunfels. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Fort Sam Houston Military Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; four children, David, League City, Texas, Kristen Kerwin, Plano, Texas, Karen Carlson, Humble, Texas, and John, Nassau Bay, Texas; 12 grandchildren and one sister, Lois Gray Haugen, Wilton.

Fred Reinhold Haux
Fred Reinhold Haux, 85, Bismarck, and formerly of Hurdsfield, died April 21, 2000 in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at First Lutheran Church, Hurdsfield, with the Rev. George Schuessler officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Hurdsfield. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday, at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey. Fred was born to Ludwig and Katharina (Koenig) Haux on Nov. 26, 1914 at the family farm north of Goodrich. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural schools. Fred married Florence Thompson on Oct. 4, 1935 in Goodrich. They farmed in the Chaseley-Hurdsfield area until their retirement. For several years, he was a businessman in Hurdsfield. Fred and Florence moved to Bismarck in 1996. He was a member of the Hurdsfield Lutheran Church and for a time served as treasurer. He was also a Lions and Eagles member. He is survived by his wife, Florence; one son, Ronald, West Fargo; and his daughters and sons-in-law, Audrey and John McIntyre, Bismarck, and Cheryl and Donald Knecht, Donnybrook; seven grandsons and one granddaughter; five great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters; and four step-great-grandchildren; his sisters, Martha Deckert, Lydia Unruh and Clara Foss; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Barbara Baumgartner, Louisa Gruszie, Elsie Poole, and Ida Schmidt; and four brothers, John, Henry, Jake and Carl. The family wishes for memorials to be given to the Hurdsfield Lutheran Church. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Leslie R. Hersrud, 86, Lemmon, S.D., died April 20, 2000 in a Spearfish, S.D. hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday, at Calvary Lutheran Church, Lemmon. Further arrangements are pending with Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Lemmon.

Myrtle O. Knutson
PARSHALL -- Myrtle O. Knutson, 81, Parshall, formerly of Blaisdell, died April 21, 2000 in the Parshall nursing home. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, at Rockview Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Parshall, with burial in Rosehill Cemetery, Minot. She is survived by one son, Myrtle Jorgenson, Williston; one brother, Adolph Jorgenson, New Town; and five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. (Johnson Funeral Home, Parshall)

Vern Charles Mardikian
DRISCOLL -- Vern Charles Mardikian, 45, Driscoll, died April 20, 2000. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Driscoll Town Hall, with the Rev. Jo Olson officiating. Burial will be in Driscoll Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today, at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel. Vern was born April 7, 1955, the son of Wenes and Justine (Card) Mardikian. He graduated from Driscoll High School in 1973, and from Bismarck Junior College in 1975. He married Maureen Tjaden on May 3, 1975. Vern farmed and ranched with his dad. He and his wife, Maureen owned Chaser's Bar in Driscoll. Vern also drove school bus, he was presently on the Crownhill Township Board, the Kidder County Weed Board, and also on the Driscoll School Board. He is survived by his wife, Maureen; three daughters, Jennifer Mardikian and her boyfriend, John Clemens, Kari Mardikian and her boyfriend, Bryan Hanson, all of Bismarck, and Stephanie Mardikian, Driscoll, and her boyfriend, Brett Patrick, Wilton; his parents, Wenes and Justine Mardikian, Driscoll; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard and Gail Mardikian, Gillette, Wyo., and Dale and Jeri Mardikian, Minot; 21 nieces and nephews, Matthew, Sam, Josh, Becky, Daniel, Heather, Christopher, Alex, Sarah, Mack, Bridget, Tanya, Sarah, Christian, Alicia, Megan, Allyson, Michael, Shawn, Amee and Bethany; two great-nephews, Brandon and Lane; and one grand-niece, Aaleah. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lester and Cora Card and Alex and Marian Mardikian; one sister, Kathy Mardikian; two nephews, Jesse Tjaden and Wyatt Mardikian; and two uncles, Clifford Mardikian and Lenny Card. DICKINSON -- Katherine "Katie" Martin, 90, Dickinson, died April 21, 2000 in the Dickinson hospital. Services wil be held at 3 p.m. MDT Tuesday, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dickinson. She is survived by one sister, Anna Dobitz, Sacramento, Calif.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter, Lois Davenport, Circle Pines, Minn.; one son, David, Tioga; five grandchildren and five sisters, Helen Nuss, Lydia Bauer and Elvina Fiedler, all of Mercer, Mary Fiedler, Turtle Lake, and Erdina Fiedler, Sun City, Ariz. MADDOCK -- Luella Sabbe, 85, Maddock, died April 20, 2000 in a Devils Lake hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock, with burial in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Maddock. She is survived by one son, Conley, Maddock; and two sisters, Wilma Lucken, McIntosh, Minn., and Mabel Togstad, Maddock.

Ralph Thompson, 75, 520 W. Avenue F, died April 21, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Casper A. Anderson
DEVILS LAKE -- Casper A. Anderson, 99, Devils Lake and formerly of Leeds, died April 22, 2000, in a Devils Lake care center. He is survived by two sons, Warren and Lyle, both of Devils Lake; two daughters, Janet Ann Carvell, Washburn, and Janice Kay Persinger, Norton, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Kitterman, Devils Lake. Kevin Paul Bauer
GARRISON -- Kevin Paul Bauer, 19, Garrison, died April 22, 2000, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison, with the Rev. Dick Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery at 2 p.m. Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. today at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison, and for one hour prior to the service at the church. A private viewing will be held for family, friends and classmates at 7 tonight at the funeral home. Kevin was born Jan. 7, 1981, to Bob and Joan (Hargrove) Bauer in Indio, Calif. In September 1981 he and his family moved to Hettinger, where Kevin attended grade school. In 1991 he and his family moved to Garrison, where he graduated from high school in 1999. He was currently employed at GLS Teleservice in Garrison. Kevin was planning to attend law enforcement school in Devils Lake this fall. Kevin is survived by his parents, Bob and Joan, Garrison; one brother, Steve Bauer, Kansas City, Mo.; his paternal grandparents, Phyllis and Reuben Bauer, Turtle Lake; his maternal grandmother, Ethel Hargrove, Indio, Calif.; one nephew; and several aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Uzell Hargrove; and one aunt, Brenda Bauer. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)
