Stanley Moore
North Dakota Farmers Union's fifth president, Stanley M. Moore, suffered a stroke and died Sunday, May 14, in Denver, Colo., at the age of 79.
"Stanley Moore was a legendary leader of NDFU and a long-time employee," said NDFU President Robert Carlson. "Perhaps Stanley's most enduring legacy is a strong state farm organization and the financial wisdom he brought to the Farmers Union business entities and cooperatives. We are saddened by his death and our thoughts are with his family and his extended Farmers Union family."
Moore was NDFU president from May of 1975 to December of 1986. He began his career with Farmers Union in 1946 as an early organizer and insurance representative. Moore's grandfather, Charles C. Talbott, was NDFU's principal organizer and first president.
In 1947, he became a field representative for NDFU. Ten years later, he was named director of cooperative relations and in 1961 became the administrative assistant to then president E.W. Smith. Moore later became secretary-treasurer of the organization, and was appointed president of NDFU in 1975, following the resignation of Smith.
During his tenure as president, Moore spearheaded the building of a new state headquarters building in Jamestown, broadened the financial base of the organization, and led the successful reacquisition bid of National Farmers Union Insurances from Baldwin United in 1985.
Moore devoted more than two decades of his life to National Farmers Union Insurances, having served on its board of directors since 1976.
He was elected NFU vice president in 1980, and re-elected in 1982 and 1984. From 1970 to 1975, he represented NFU on the National Wheat Institute which was responsible for wheat marketing promotion and research, and served as its vice president.
He was appointed to serve no the Agriculture Policy Advisory Committee for Trade Negotiations in 1977 and 1978. In 1983, he was appointed to the Agriculture Options Advisory Committee to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. He also was a special representative on international food policy for NFU to the United Nations' World Food Conference in Rome in 1974. He held positions on a number of boards.
Moore was born at Ellendale, N.D., the son of Stanley Edward and Myrle (Talbott) Moore. He grew up in Dickey County, North Dakota, on his grandparents' farm. His mother died shortly after his birth and in later years, he went to live with his maternal grandparents, Charles and Mary Talbott.
Moore was educated in rural schools in Dickey County through the seventh grade and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1939. He attended North Dakota State University and Jamestown College before entering the U.S. Air Force in 1942. He was stationed in Tinian Island and Iwo Jima as a member of a B-29 bombing crew and flew 33 missions over Japan before his honorable discharge in November 1945.
He married Delores Sense Nov. 23, 1946. She died in March 1999.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan Miller, Denver, Colo.; a son, Gaylan (Elizabeth), Boise, Idaho; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a son-in-law, Gary Miller; and a sister, Ianza Hagen.
A memorial reception in celebration of Moore's life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Farmers Union state office in Jamestown.
