Lawrence "Pappy" Stokes
HETTINGER -- Lawrence "Pappy" Stokes, 93, Hettinger, died Feb. 10, 2000, in a Hettinger care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Monday at Hettinger Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Stephen M. Sherer officiating. Burial will be in Hettinger Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. MST today at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger, and for one hour prior the service on Monday at the church. A family service will be held at 7 MST tonight at the funeral home. Special music will be provided by Charlotte Morey, pianist, and Norman and Bonnie Smith, vocalists. Serving as casketbearers will be Todd, Paul and Michael Bortke, Michael Krueger, Al McIntyre and Mike Marion. All friends are considered honorary pallbearers. Lawrence Martin "Pappy" Stokes was born Aug. 1, 1906, at Harris, Minn., to Edward and Mercy Evelyn (Stuttle) Stokes. In 1912 he moved with his parents to Oakes and in 1917 to Hettinger, where they operated a grocery store. Lawrence attended grade school and high school in Hettinger, graduating from Hettinger High School in 1924. He began working at a local drugstore, where he earned enough money to attend college. Lawrence attended Polk College in La Porte, Ind., a music and piano tuning school, graduating on Aug. 3, 1926. In 1927, Lawrence moved from Hettinger to Philadelphia, where he played in numerous big bands along the East Coast until 1930. He worked part time at a drugstore there and tuned pianos on the side. In 1930, Lawrence returned to Hettinger, where he started his own piano tuning business. He played in numerous big bands, nightclubs, jazz festivals and dances throughout North Dakota, South Dakota and surrounding states. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Bortke on April 27, 1971, at Reeder. They continued to live in Hettinger. Lawrence enjoyed refinishing and tuning old pianos and musical instruments. He entered Hillcrest Care Center on Jan. 24, 2000. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Dorothy; two stepsons, Al Bortke and his wife, Linda, Bismarck, and Len Bortke and his wife, Mary, Crystal, Minn.; one stepdaughter, Gen and her husband, Norm Krueger, Mandan; five step-grandchildren, Todd Bortke and his wife, Ann; Paul Bortke and his wife, Michelle, all of Bismarck, Mike Krueger and his wife, Susan, Champlin, Minn., Susie and her husband, Darrell Beaman, Spokane, Wash., and Mike Bortke and his wife, Elizabeth, Minneapolis; five step-great-grandchildren, Alex Michael Bortke, Amy Joe Bortke, Kristen Kay Bortke and Hayley Ann Bortke, all of Bismarck, and Keaton Michael Beaman, Spokane; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Nellie, Mary Eleanor, Effie and Edith; one brother, Joel; and one step-grandson, Jeffrey Krueger. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger)

OBERON -- Richard Woolley, 96, Oberon, died Feb. 10, 2000, in the New Rockford nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Calvary Lutheran Church, Oberon. Sophie F. Bergenheier, 91, Lemmon, S.D., died Jan. 31, 2000 in the Lemmon nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Lemmon, with burial in Greenhill Cemetery. She is survived by four sons, Harry, Wichita Falls, Texas, Vernon Birgenheier, Lancaster, Calif., Donald, Finley, and Joseph, Mecker, Colo.; four daughters, Pauline Svihovec, Lemmon, Eleanor Tomac, Keldron, S.D., Lorraine Burdick, Ridgecrest, Calif.; one stepsister, Theresa Lakey, Courtzsite, Ariz.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Ione Ferebee
DICKINSON -- Ione Ferebee, 84, Dickinson, formerly of Halliday, died Jan. 20, 2000 in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Thursday, at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson. Burial will be in Halliday Cemetery. She is survived by three sons, Dale, Beach, Ora, Bismarck, and Neil, Halliday; three grandchildren; two sisters, her twin Ina Ferebee, Dickinson, and Margery Zick, Mott; and two brothers, Wesley Guenther, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Darrel Guenther, Minot. Clifford Giese
STEELE -- Clifford Giese, 76, Steele, died Jan. 30, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Robinson, with the Rev. Allen Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery, Robinson. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, noon-7 p.m. Wednesday, at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Steele, and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Cliff was born on Sept. 24, 1923 at Elgin the son of Daniel and Etta (Mayer) Giese. He attended school at Elgin, graduating from Elgin High School. Following high school, he attended trade school at Fargo. He was a welder at a shipyard at Duluth, Minn. before being drafted into the service of his country on May 14, 1943. He was assigned to the U.S. Army Division 460th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion serving in the Eastern Europe war zone during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 4, 1945. Cliff married Jessie I. Neustel on Nov. 6, 1947 in the Lutheran Church at Woodworth. They began farming in Section 6, Robinson Township, which they later purchased. He also worked for Saltness Electric as an electrician. They liked to visit and were always ready and willing to play a game of cards. Jessie passed away on Oct. 23, 1991. On March 11, 1994, Cliff married Evelyn Shirley Price. They moved and made their home at Steele. He was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church at Robinson, serving on the church council. He also served as a board member for Farmer's Union, Pettibone. For several years he worked for ASCS doing land and grain bin measuring. Later he worked for Kidder County doing assessing. He was an active past member of Robinson Lions, Tuttle VFW, New Rockford American Legion and Bismarck Eagles. Cliff is survived by his wife, Evelyn; one son and daughter-in-law, Lance and Ida Giese, Ross; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharyl and Larry Roth, Minot; Janice and Edward Swies, Palos Heights, Ill., and Jamie and David Brousseau, Hazen; five grandsons, two stepsons and step-daughters-in-law, Dennis and Renee Price, Tuttle, and Dale and Jane Price, Jamestown; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Judy and Bob Cook, Los Angeles, Calif.; 13 step-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Vernice and Bob Kramer, Kalispell, Mont.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Chester and Lorraine Giese, Steele, Eugene and Hilda Giese, Buffalo, and Raymond and Janet Giese, Redding, Calif. Dorothy M. Havnvik
BELFIELD -- Dorothy M. Havnvik, 97, formerly of Belfield, died Jan. 28, 2000 in a Lander, Wyo., care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at Belfield Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Belfield Lutheran Cemetery. She is survived by her son, Philip, Lander; four granddaughters and eight great-grandchildren. (Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson)

Marguerite Heck
Sister Marguerite Heck, 73, Yankton, S.D., died Jan. 21, 2000 in the Sacred Heart Monastery infirmary after an extended illness. A wake service was held on Jan. 23 and services were held on Jan. 24 at Bishop Marty Chapel, Sacred Heart Monastery. Burial was in the monastery cemetery. Catherine Heck was born at Mandan on March 21, 1926 to Anton and Margaret (Steiner) Heck. She was the third of seven children. When she was seven years old her mother died. Her father later married Katherine Schaff who helped raise the large family. Catherine attended rural school and after graduation in 1939 remained at home to assist the family. In 1944, she entered the Sacred Heart Monastery at Yankton, S.D., where she made her monastic profession on June 24, 1946. Her first mission experience was girls prefect at St. Joseph's Indian School in Chamberlain, S.D. After that she also ministered as prefect in boarding schools in Stephan, Zell and Tabor. For several years, Sister Marguerite worked at the monastery in the guest department, the alter bread department, and as portress. She also did housekeeping at Mount Marty, and Sacred Heart Monastery in Hales Corner, Wis. In 1969, she earned her GED certificate. Her longest assignment was a housekeep at Bishop's residence in Sioux Falls, where she served Bishops Brady, Hoch and Dudley at different times for 24 years. Sister Marguerite enjoyed traveling and her trips to Rome and the Holy Land were highlights in her life. In 1990 she retired to the monastery where she assisted with infirmary work. As coordinator of the St. Benedict small group, she showed special care and concern for the elderly sisters. Along with her monastic community, Sister Marguerite is survived by four brothers, Peter and Valentine Heck, Mandan, Louie Heck, Garden Grove, Calif., Ralph Heck, Richland, Wash.; and one sister, Isabel Davis, Richland, Wash. She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother and one brother.

Eva M. Herauf
Eva M. (Morrell) Herauf, 89, Yakima, Wash., and formerly of St. Anthony, died Jan. 16, 2000 in a Yakima care center. Services were held on Jan. 21 at Holy Family Church, Yakima. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Yakima. She is surviveld by one son, Kenneth, Yakima; a daughter, Sandra Chavez, Fort Collins, Colo.; one sister, Maxie Helbling, Mandan; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Glen D. Hinnergardt
Glen D. Hinnergardt, 72, Bismarck, went to be with Jesus on Jan. 29, 2000. Glen was born on Aug. 26, 1927 in Bazine, Kan., the son of Henry and Edith (Neidens) Hinnergardt. He attended school in Bazine and graduated from his school in Great Bend, Kan. Glen served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and Korean Conflict. He married Dorothy Ward on Nov. 11, 1946. They moved to Billings, Mont., in 1957 and were blessed with the adoption of three children. Glen was a salesman for Russell Stover candy and then for Selover Buick in Billings, where he retired. He and Dorothy moved to Bismarck in 1996 to be closer to their son and family. He loved Bismarck, the people and North Dakota. Glen leaves his wife Dorothy of 53 years, two daughters and one son-in-law, Kerry Powell, St. Marys, Ohio, and Kelly and husband Mike Decker, Braggs, Okla.; one son and daughter-in-law, Kirk and wife Tammy Hinnergardt, Bismarck; eight grandchildren, Madeline, Amelia, Jordon and Sophie Hinnergardt, Bismarck, Amanda Odvina, Oregon, Sonny LeCrone, Oregon, Desiree and Anthony LeCrone, St. Marys, Ohio; and his lovely greyhound, Kia. Robert "Bob" L. Kraft
Robert "Bob" L. Kraft, 77, Bismarck, died Jan. 30, 2000 in a local hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Art Scanson and Rick Fossum officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m., followed by a private family service. Bob was born March 9, 1922 the son of Emmitt E. and Reuby (Spaulding) Kraft in Turtle Lake. At age 4, he moved with his family to Coleharbor. He moved to Washburn, when he was a junior in high school, graduating from Washburn High School in 1941. Bob spent three months in the CCC at Wall, S.D. He also attended NYA Machinist School in Bismarck and was employed in the Navy Yards in Bremerton, Wash. He was drafted into the Army in December of 1942 in the Airborne Engineers. Bob was discharged in October of 1945. He received the EAME theater ribbon with four bronze stars-- Glider Badge. Bob married Lorine Kaufmann in June of 1946 in Zap. He attended BIsmarck Junior College graduating from UND in 1950, with a B.S. in education, with a major in Industrial Arts. Bob began his teaching career in Glen Ullin then obtaining a position in the Bismarck Public School system as a high school Industrial Arts instructor in 1952. He received his Masters Degree from Northern State University at Greeley, Colo. in 1957. He transferred to Simle Junior High School in 1962, where he was a department chairman, teaching Industrial Arts, and Drivers Education. He When his son became active in Boy Scouts, he joined the troop as the chairman. The next six years he was the Scoutmaster. He is still registered in scouting, in scout and scoutmaster leadership training. He received the Baden Powell Award from the Troop, the Award of Merit from the district and the Silver Beaver Award from the council. He is a vigil member of the Order of the Arrow and has three beads in the Woodbadge. Bob was a life member of the National Education Association, a retired member of the North Dakota Education Association, a life member of the American Industrial Arts Association and was a life member and past president of the North Dakota Industrial Arts Association. Bob was also a life member of VFW, a member of the American Legion, Elks, AARP, Open Water Diver, 12th Year Mason, Scottish Rite, Shrine, Dusters, and was a past president of Missouri Slope Shrine Club. Bob was a member of McCabe United Methodist Church since 1952. He was an active usher and served on many of the church committees. His most recent award was the Grand Cross of Color from the International Order of Rainbow for Girls in 1966. Bob is survived by his wife, Lori; one son, Randy Kraft and special friend, Shelly Gunsch, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Bobbi and Bill Tenborg, Cheyenne, Wyo.; his grandchildren, Jon Hegland, Cheyenne, and Sommer Hegland, Mankato, Minn.; three sisters, Viola Merbach, New Leipzig, Emma Peightal and Maxine Buehler, both of Bismarck; and two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Clinton and Bernice Kraft, Overland Park, Kan., Loren and Ruth Kraft, Mesa, Ariz., and Ruth Kraft, Bremerton, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmitt E. and Reuby Kraft; one brother, Emmitt Kraft Jr.; and one sister, Margaret Edmundson. The family prefers memorials to the Masonic H.E.L.P. Lawrence Mitchlitsch, 82, Bradley, Ill., and formerly of North Dakota, died Jan. 31, 2000 in a Bradley hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at St. Joseph Church, Bradley. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery, Bourbonnais, Ill. Elizabeth E. Olheiser
DICKINSON -- Elizabeth E. Olheiser, 86, Dickinson, died Jan. 28, 2000 in Boise, Idaho. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Dickinson. She is survived by her husband, David F.; two sons, David Olheiser, Boise, Idaho, and Harold, Dickinson; one brother, Anton Vogel, Bismarck, and six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Ida Orso
Ida Orso, 100, MedCenter One Care Center, Mandan, died Jan. 30, 2000 in the care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with the Revs. Alvin Reimnitz and Thomas R. Marcis, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service. Ida Bagnutzke was born March 24, 1899 at Lennep Rhinlad, Germany. She came to the United States in 1923. On Oct. 7, 1923 she and Steve Orso were married. They farmed in the vicinity of Blue Grass and Otter Creek. They moved to Bismarck in 1945 and Ida worked at Capitol Laundry for 15 years. Steve died on Sept. 12, 1975. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul, Mandan, Steve and Olga, Divine, Texas, and Betty Orso, Casper, Wyo.; three daughters and one son-in-law, Edith Miller, Portland, Ore., Gertrude Bagner, Casper, Wyo., and Agnes and Oscar Lennick, Bismarck; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve; one son, Jim; two sons-in-law, Richard Miller and August Bagner; and one daughter-in-law, Velma Orso. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Bernice V. Peterson
UNDERWOOD -- Bernice V. Peterson, 87, Underwood, formerly of Turtle Lake, died Jan. 31, 2000 in the Underwood care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Turtle Lake, with the Rev. Randy Emgarten officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday, at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Bernice Peterson was born Feb. 14, 1912 at rural Turtle Lake to Edward and Bertha (Stenson) Severts. She attended rural school and graduated from Turtle Lake High School in 1931. She attended Minot State Teacher's School and taught at various rural schools. She taught school for nine years. She married Clarence Peterson on July 31, 1941 at her parents' home near Turtle Lake. The couple resided five miles north of Turtle Lake where they owned and operated the Peterson Machine Shop for 47 years. In July, 1984, the couple retired and moved into Turtle Lake. Clarence passed away in 1989. In 1995, Bernice became a resident of the Sheridan Memorial Home in McClusky. In April 1996, she became a resident of the Prairieview Care Center in Underwood. She was an active member of the Turtle Lake Community Hospital Auxiliary. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed baking. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and June Peterson, Gooding, Idaho; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and Denny Orvedahl, Morris, Minn., and Avis and Steve Seeger, Turtle Lake; seven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two infant daughters; one daughter, one son-in-law; three brothers and three sisters. (Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake)

Andrew Sandwick, 81, Lemmon, S.D., died Jan. 28, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Rosebud Lutheran Church, near Shadehill, S.D. Burial will be in Scholaas Cemetery, rural Shadehill. He is survived by his wife, Sally; one son, Mark, Kearny, Ariz.; two grandsons and four great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucille McIntyre, Astoria, Ore.; five stepchildren, six step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandsons. Agnes M. Schmidt
Agnes M. Schmidt, 102, formerly of 311 3rd Avenue NE, Mandan, died Jan. 28, 2000 in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Jacob Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation begins today from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Catholic Daughters rosary said at 4 p.m. today and a parish rosary at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Agnes (Smith) Schmidt, was the last in a family of 12, of which there were 8 boys and 4 girls. Agnes was born on Sept. 6, 1987 to John C. and Ella (Bisenius) Smith in LaMont, Ill. She loved going to dances where she met George E. Schmidt. They were married on Feb. 7, 1923 in Mandan and moved to Schmidt, N.D., where George managed the Riverside Gravel Pit. To this union five children were born, Kenneth, Eugene "Bud," and Bernice, Darlene and LaVerne. In 1934 they moved to Mandan and lived at 311 3rd Ave. NE.George died on Feb. 7, 1974 on their 51st wedding anniversary. Agnes continued to live in their home until 1986, when she moved to the Lewis and Clark Apartments, living there until October 1997. She lived at Margaret Hoerner's until December 18th when she was hospitalized with the flu, entered the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center on January 6th and died on January 28th due to flu complications. She was a great cook, baker, seamstress, gardener and enjoyed it all. She loved children, especially babies. Survivors include: Bernice (Irving) Reed, Santa Monica, Calif.; Darlene (Lawrence) Graner, Mandan, and LaVerne (E.J.) Richard, Tyler, Texas; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Elsie Smith, Mandan, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; two sons, Eugene in 1951, and Kenneth in 1984; one daughter-in-law, Mervyn Schmidt, and one son-in-law, Lyle Taylor; one great-grandson, Jason Silva in 1981; and eight brothers and three sisters.
