Eva C. Stebner, 84, Bismarck, died Feb. 3, 2000 in a local nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck.

Doris Vinnard
MADDOCK -- Doris Vinnard, 70, Maddock, died Feb. 4, 2000 in a New Rockford nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Viking Lutheran Church, rural Maddock. Further arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock.

Fred G. Weiss
WEST FARGO -- Fred G. Weiss, 82, West Fargo, died Feb. 2, 2000 in a Fargo hospital. Services were held on Feb. 4, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in West Fargo. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at N.D. Veterans' Cemetery, rural Mandan. Fred Weiss was born on May 2, 1917 near Mandan. He grew up on a family farm there. Fred attended school at Highland Acres Elementary at rural Mandan and Mandan High School in Mandan. He farmed for a short time before entering the U.S. Army on Aug. 9, 1941. He was discharged on Oct. 5, 1945. He worked at the Mandan Foundry. Fred married Mildred O. Holly on July 14, 1961 at Center. They lived in Fargo. Fred worked for Steiger Tractor Company in Fargo from 1969 to 1980. Mildred died in 1978. He moved to West Fargo. Fred retired in 1980. He has resided at the West Fargo High Rise since the mid 1980's. He was a lifetime member of the West Fargo V.F.W. He is survived by a special friend, Alice Lee, West Fargo; one nephew, Richard (Theresa) Tokach, Mandan; a stepdaughter, Marlys Gidmark, Fargo; and several step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; and a sister, Viola and Matt Tokach. (West Funeral Homes, West Fargo)

DICKINSON -- John Gengler, 84, Dickinson, died Feb. 5, 2000 in a Dickinson care center. Arrangements are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

DICKINSON -- Violet C. Gilbert, 92, Dickinson, died Feb. 2, 2000 in a Dickinson care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday, at Mischel-Olson Chapel, with burial at 2:30 p.m. MST at Hettinger Cemetery. She is survived by two daughters, Mildred Dokken, Hastings, Minn., and Janet Gilbert Bjorum, Yuma, Ariz.; two sons, Stanley C., and James, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; three sisters, Grace White, Hettinger, Marian Mercado and Alva Mae Bakke, both of Bismarck; and three brothers, Erick Bjorum, Reno, Nev., Carl Bjorum, Brians Road, Md., and Ben Bjorum, Yuma. DICKINSON -- Grace Haller, 92, Dickinson, died Feb. 4, 2000 in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held 11:30 a.m. MST Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dickinson. She is survived by one sister, Rosella Belland, New England; and two brothers, Lawrence Thomas, New England, and Carl Thomas, Eugene, Ore. HETTINGER -- Walter Huisman, 85, Hettinger, died Feb. 3, 2000 in the Mott care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Monday, at United Church of Christ, Mott. Burial will be in St. Vincent Cemetery, Mott. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his sons, Kenny, Wilton, and Rod, Great Falls, Mont.; one daughter, Jan Huisman, Wibaux, Mont.; five grandchildren and one sister, Eileen Mauss, Burlingame, Calif. NEW SALEM -- Ethel Just, 76, New Salem, died Feb. 5, 2000 in the New Salem nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

MOTT -- Edwin Kirschmann, 70, Mott, died Feb. 3, 2000 in a Rapid City hospital. Arrangements are pending with Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott.

Mary Knoll
Mary Martin Knoll, 89, died Feb. 2, 2000, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in the spring in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home, where a rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. tonight. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service at the church on Monday. Mary was born on June 21, 1910 in St. Anthony, the daughter of Stephan and Monica (Kupper) Martin. She was raised and educated near St. Anthony. Mary married Michael Knoll on Jan. 28, 1930, at St. Mary's Church in Bismarck. Following their marriage, they farmed near Menoken until 1963 when they retired and moved to Bismarck. While living in Menoken, Mary was a member of St. Hildegard's Altar Society. She was a member of St. Mary's Altar Society and the VFW Auxiliary. She loved to crochet and cook. Mary is survived by one daughter and two sons-in-law, Advina and Paul Kenyon, Las Vegas, and Marvin Krein, Bismarck; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Edward, Lake Stevens, Wash., Nick and Charlene, Bismarck, and Ken and Judith, Barstow, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Schafer, Bismarck, and Madge Kutzer, Burlington, Wash.; and one brother and sister-in-law, Jacob and Minnie Martin, Mandan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael, in 1965; one daughter, Min Krein; one son, Leonard; one granddaughter; her parents; two sisters, Lacodia and Eva; and seven brothers, John, Dominick, Nick, Al, Pius, Adam and Michael. WISHEK -- Ivan Lehr, 75, Wishek, died Feb. 5, 2000 in the Napoleon care center. Arrangements are pending with Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek.

Solweig Nelson
Our dear Solweig, 81 years young, known as "Sally" passed away on Nov. 21, 1999 in Auburn, Wash. after a short battle with liver cancer. Born in Bismarck, to Anton and Sophie Nelson, who had sailed from Norway to the Midwest 90 years ago and married there in 1911. Solweig was the third of five children, all who had preceded her in death; Alpha Dumire, Norman S. Nelson, Edwin A. Nelson, and Ruth J. Olson. Loving son James E. Nelson, who has carried on the family name, survives Sally. Grandpa Anton Nelson was actually a "Nilson", son of Nils and Anne Tosterud from the old homestead at Feiring, Norway. Alison Pauley Nelson is Sally's surviving granddaughter, who currently lives in San Diego, Calif. Sally also has an adopted granddaughter who lives in Shelton, Wash., her favorite "gigglepuss" Vanessa Stewart Nelson. Four nieces, Linda Mullen, Claremont, Calif., Ginger Croaker, Fargo, Boni Olson, Bismarck, Sharon Tschider, Bismarck survive her. Two nephews, Tony Dumire, Aspen, Colo., and Donald A . Olson, Bismarck. Solweig "Sally" was born and raised in Bismarck, graduating from Bismarck High School in 1936. In 1945, as WWII ended and after working for the Air Transport Command, she left for Seattle, Wash., and lived there the rest of her life. She worked for several businesses, American President Lines, Preferred Insurance and Palmer G. Lewis, retiring after 22 years in 1983. She had moved to Auburn, Wash., when PGL relocated and was happily nested in the same apartment at Brittany Lane; Apt. J4, was the home where buttered toast was always readily served with hot coffee and a loving smile! Our Sally is also remembered by many of her friends from Phinney Ridge, Treasures and Trash, and Bingo. Those close friends and health care providers who were supportive and caring for her through those difficult last four months, will be appreciated by the family forever! James and Allison want to extend a special and loving thank you to Emma Kildall of Lake City, Wash. for opening her heart and home during those last difficult days. A private burial will be in Bismarck at Fairview Cemetery in the spring of 2000.

HAZEN -- Frieda Reiner, 85, Hazen, died Feb. 4, 2000 in the Devils Lake hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Tuesday, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Hazen. Further arrangements are pending with Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.

ASHLEY -- Edwina Retzer, 86, Ashley, died Feb. 3, 2000 in an Aberdeen, S.D. hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley, with burial in the church cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Jerald, Ashley, and Ken, Fargo; one daughter, Linda Fiechtl, Fairbanks, Alaska; and one sister, Viola Dockter, Ashley and seven grandchildren. Peter Schumacher
Peter Schumacher, 76, Bismarck, died peacefully at his home on Feb. 4, 2000. Services will be held at noon Wednesday, at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with a rosary service said at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Peter was born on Aug. 23, 1923 the son of Joseph J. and Katherine (Wolf) Schumacher. He was born and raised in Napoleon, and worked on his farm in Rugby where he met and married Loretta Wentz on Jan. 8, 1946. Together they had 10 loving children. He is survived by his wife, Loretta; his children, Joseph Schumacher, Bismarck, Veronica Selby, Roger Schumacher, Sheila McNeil and Eva Quiroz, all of California, Gloria Terry, Utah, Twyla Evans, Wyoming, and Debra Rickey, Arkansas; 23 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and five brothers and sisters, Sebastian Schumacher, Napoleon, Magdalena Mattson, Bismarck, Eva Wolf, Bismarck, Clara Hilla, Michigan, and Joseph Schumacher, California. He was preceded in death by two sons, Peter Jr. and Robert; his parents; two brothers and three sisters. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Eva Stebner
Eva Stebner, 84, passed on to eternity peacefully on the night of Feb. 3, 2000 in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas E. Kramer, Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck, in the spring. Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday, at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, where a rosary service will be said at 7 p.m. Monday evening. Eva was born on Sept. 9, 1915 to Michael and Eva (Braun) Weigel in Zeeland. The eldest of eight children, she was the first to graduate from Bismarck High School with the class of '33. She later lived in San Francisco, where she and Chris were married in July of 1942. They moved to Bismarck in 1947 and established Bismarck Refrigeration Sales & Service, Inc. Eva and Chris were loving parents and were active in civic and social activities. Eva was a member and office holder of numerous organizations, including North Dakota Republican Women, St. Alexius Hospital Auxiliary, Catholic Daughters of America, Elkettes Lodge No. 1199, Bismarck Country Club and Apple Creek Country Club. Both were avid supporters of St. Mary's Central High School athletics. Eva was a "regular" at the 6:45 a.m. daily Mass at the Cathedral Church, oftentimes waiting for Monsignor Garvin. She will be remembered fondly by all of her family members, including her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Vicki Stebner, Portland, Ore.; her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Dr. Charles Zemo, Boiling Springs, Penn.; along with her surviving sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Augie Rittenbach, Bismarck, Anne W. Fleming, Dallas, Texas, Helen Litt, Rodondo Beach, Calif., Marcella Weigel, Mandan, Eileen and Bob Bartsch, Trumbull, Conn., Rosemary Weigel, Lincoln, Jack and Fern Stebner, Salem, Ore., and Marianne and Richard Baron, Mandan; along with numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in passing by her parents; her husband; and brothers, John, Mike, and Pius T. Weigel and sister-in-law, Flora Weinhandl. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)

Doris Vinnard
MADDOCK -- Doris Vinnard, 70, Maddock, died Feb. 4, 2000 in a New Rockford nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Viking Lutheran Church, rural Maddock, with burial in the church cemetery. She is survived by two daughters, Donna Johnson, Oberon and Colleen Abrahamson, New Rockford; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and one sister, Gladys Hausman, Vista, Calif. Lydia Zeller
MINOT -- Lydia Zeller, 90, Minot, and formerly of Elgin, died Feb. 4, 2000 in a Minot care center, where she has lived since August 1993. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Hope Conservative Congregational Church, Elgin, with the Rev. Art Wetzel officiating, with burial in Hope Congregational Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. MST today, and 9 a.m.-noon MST Monday, at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin, and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Surviving family members include two daughters and one son-in-law, Marilyn and Kevin Ternes, Minot, and Irene Ensminger, Torrance, Calif.; one daughter-in-law, Susie Zeller, Billings, Mont.; 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; one brother, Roland Nicklaus, Kennewick, Wash., and one sister, Pauline Kessler, Portland, Ore. Martha Eszlinger
WISHEK -- Martha Eszlinger, 87, Wishek, and formerly of Ashley, died Feb. 5, 2000 in the Wishek nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Ashley. Further arrangements are pending with Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley.

Allen L. Fisk
Allen L. Fisk, 82, 1122 W. Avenue B, died Feb. 6, 2000 in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, at McCabe United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rick Fossum officiating. Burial will be in Hunter Cemetery at a later date. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Allen was born on Oct. 29, 1917 at Hunter, to Clyde and Agnes (Powlison) Fisk. He graduated from Hunter High School and from North Dakota State University in 1940. He married Helen Greenshields at the First Baptist Church, Fargo, on June 30, 1942. Allen worked for Armour and Company, Bismarck, and then went to work for the US Department of Agriculture Farm Security Administration until Sept. 8, 1942, when he entered the US Army Air Force, serving in China, Burma and India as a radar controller. He then worked for USDA in Williston, Mayville, Maryland, Lincoln, Nebraska, and in 1973, he was transferred to Bismarck as USDA State Conservationist for Soil Conservation Services. He retired on Jan. 1, 1980 after 38 years of federal service. He was very active in the McCabe United Methodist Church. He also held memberships and offices in the Soil Conservation Society of America, Westerners International, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Rotary, VFW, American Legion, ND Academy of Science, Nature Conservancy Board, ALFA, Zeta, and Agricultural Fraternity. He was an avid woodworker and built several lecterns that are in use today at the McCabe United Methodist Church. He was instrumental in developing the Rotary Arboretum, which has all the native trees grown in North Dakota planted there, as well as developing the walking trail through it. He is survived by his wife, Helen; one son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Lori, Crete, Neb.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Susan, Edina, Minn., and Sally and Keith Domke, Jamestown; one sister, Rebecca Swanson, Anchorage, Alaska; one brother, Douglas Fisk, Carmichael, Calif.; and six grandchildren, Kari, Allen and Daniel Fisk, Walker Canarsky, and Nichole and Dawson Domke. Allen was preceded in death by his parents; one brother and three sisters. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)
